[Q] Nexus 7 oddity after 4.4.3 update - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi All
I was given this website address by the ASUS support team when I called them to try and rectify an issue that I have with my 2012 Nexus 7.
Please note I am a complete newbie and have a very basis knowledge of the Nexus 7 workings other than normal use...
My Nexus was working absolutely fine until I decided to take the 4.4.3 upgrade which was done via a hotel wifi when I was on holiday aborad recently..The update appeared to go through fine, but after a reboot the screen colours now appear faded as though the screen is being viewed with sunglasses on but more annoying is that approx 3/4 of the way down the screen there appears to be split and anythn that borders this split is hidden under it...ie the keyboard for instance...( the middle row of keys asdfgh etc) are hidden under the top row of keys. making it almost impossible to type/enter anything...the same thing applies to the sign on pad..again the middle row of numbers is hidden under the top row..
Nexus support were as good as useless and advised to "root" the device, but couldn't even tell me what rooting is....
Any help would be much appreciated.

[Q] Nook color screen unresponsive at bottom.

Hello all,
I've recently purchased my first android device and wow is it cool. I've installed several different ROM's on it (CM7 253, Cm7.1, CM9, Cm7.2). What I've noticed is that the bottom has some issues that may hardware issues.
When I'm in a draw program I cannot draw fluidly near the bottom near the N button. Also when I use the pointer control utility in settings (forgot the name) it is nice an fluid for all of the screen EXCEPT on the side where the N button is. It will seems to get sporadic and will make contact, and not and I'll get dots and dashes instead of a nice fluid line. The soft buttons work fine but require more of a firm push when position in portrait mode.
I'm thinking hardware? This is on a refurbished nook BTW.
I can't get to the device as it's under the tree (for my wife).
Can someone test this and tell me if yours can create a fluid line drawing near the edge where the N button is?
Thanks,
Zack
I bought 9 NCs as christmas presents this year, I had to return 3 of the due to hardware problems (Thankfully I tested all of them the day I got them).
One of the ones I returned had poor touch sensitivity on the bottom of the screen which got progressively worse over a few minutes of use. I had to retype several letters when I was putting in the wifi password then it went into standby and I couldn't unlock the lock screen because it wasn't detecting my swipe. It would just jiggle a little. By the time I took it to B&N it wouldn't even jiggle. You'll have to send it back to a place in Reno but going into B&N will save you some time on the phone.
The other 2 had busted wifi (no signal even in B&N) and a sticky power button (every couple of times you tapped it it would stick and turn the device off). There's also a few with blue tinted screens but I didn't want to return those and play refurb roulette again.
Oh, and I just did some drawing in canvas (the notion ink app) and other than having difficulty drawing a straight line my nook works just fine along all the edges.
Wife got the tablet today and loves it. I was just mucking around with it and found the nook screen recalibrator and that seemed to completely solve my problem! Whatever isin that magic potion is great.
yeah, there can sometimes me issues with the digitizer that are almost universally fixed by screen recalibration.

Disabling touch, and Activating Pen Only mode at OS level

Hi everyone.
I've copied my post from Lenovo forum to show you that Pen Only mode at OS level is very necessary for people who write with their pen on Thinkpad .
and now, Since the root is achieved, I want to know that is there any chance for a developer to do such tweak ?
Post from Lenovo's Forum :

Hello Everyone, this is a proof that why we need a Pen Only mode for the whole system . yes, since our tablet has digitizer, there should be an option to work with the tablet with just our pen . An option to disable the touch layer entirely so we can write like a human being ! ( apart from hitting the bars and activate menus )
just download the video that shows everything :
http://www.mediafire.com/?snoh86t9drdiw8w
As you can see, writing is a hard thing to do without any cloth under my hand or gloves on .As I demonstrated, each time this problem occurs, It will be gone entirely by puting something under my palm . and it wont happen 99 percents when I write completely on a cloth.
To Development Team : Please fix this problem, Pen is the only advantage of your product .
pressing and holding one of the physical keys would be a nice choice for activate/deactivate it . so people who has not pen, could deal with it .
I've gathered some other post related to this matter :

I write all of my university courses in TPT and Ive been examining this issue every day. though this problem does not depend on the palm entirely , inking failure lowers to a really small percentage when you do not put your palm on the screen . for example I want to write PEN in a random coordinate of screen in a random part of random sentence . I stroke my pen down and move my hand to write the PEN down . it writes "P" and "N" very good but instead of "E", I can see nothing or in the best condition it writes only a dot --> "P. N" or "P N" Even though that IS a problem, It wouldnt if I could correct it. unfortunatley that certain area will be deactivate for a random amount of time . you can not write ANYTHING in that area during that time. not a single line . it will work nicely if you write a line from outside of that unspecific area into that area ! this shows theres no problem of inking in that position . and the funny thing is someother day this area had no problem and maybe tomorrow will be ok too even next page will be ok . imagin how hard it would be that random area, in a complex formula ! you will lose important amount of time to deal with tha mess. now palm thing comes in the story from this sequence; remember that unknown duration of time that you could not ink anything in that area ? well, if you put a cloth under your palm, it works so much better . Lenovo, too many people are losing trace of notes, too many disappointments just for this . how hard is it for your team to roll an update to add an option for turning the touch input off ? holding harware rotation key would be awesome choice

I have the same problem with my Thinkpad Tablet. It doesn't matter which app I use. I don't use any screen protector. As I have been enjoying the comfort of a stylus on a windows tablet before and was looking forward to move away from Microsoft with this tablet, I'm really disappointed to find, that the stylus I not usefull at all beeing that unresponsive. So please fix this issue as fast as possible or I will have to switch back to windows again!

I was taking notes during a seminar last week and noticed that on the bundled Notes App, there were certain areas of the screen (middle left) where the pen just wouldnt respond at times. I would try a few times and then it would finally take the input, wondering if anyone else is having similar issues. I downloaded the WritePad application and it seems to be better there, also downladed Quill and saw that it was having similar issues so I'm wondering if its app related or hardware related. I'd love for the pen to start inking immediately as I start drawing, not start well after the stroke has begun.
Also note I have installed the Military Shield on the ThinkPad so not sure if this might have something to do with it also.

I've seen the same thing (for me - a right hander - it normally shows up on the middle right side of the screen). To me it seems like the palm rejection in the note app is the problem.
I was able to get around this by placing a small cloth (the one I use for wiping the screen) under the heel of my hand while writing... since it is a capacitive screen, the cloth hides the palm and seems to make the pen behave better.
yahoowizard wrote:
I'm not sure if I have the same problem, but is it when you keep writing and suddenly, there are moments when nothing happens when you tap the pen, sometimes at a specific region? Over the past week or so, I've used the Writepad application for about 4 hours a day or so and what happens is, a while after writing, a region starts being a bit unresponsive. Either I keep tapping random buttons on the side or I try to make a stroke outside that region, then try to immediately write in the region I'm actually trying to write in. Locking the tablet, then unlocking it fixes the problem, but it's still annoying as it starts back up again in 10 minutes or some random time later.

I agree. I am an artist and the dual screen sensor does get in the way of my art. I can manage, but would highly appreciate if it were able to switch on and off the compacitive touch function on demand.

"Ghost Touches"

Hey All-
I searched for this with the assumption that with all the N7 screen issues there would be others experiencing this but I was not able to find much of any help.
----
My N7 is registering touches without me making contact with the screen. It is always in the same location. When the keyboard is up, it is where the letter 'D' is located. If I pass my finger directly overhead, or often times, even near to, the 'D' button, the tablet registers it as a touch. I can make the tablet register a touch with my finger as far as 1/4'' away from the screen surface. As you may imagine, this makes typing near impossible. As I pass over the letter 'D' to access other letters, it registers 'D' everytime.
I have tried other keyboards and the problem persists. It isn't necessarily over the same letter (due to differing keyboard layouts) but it is always in the same location on the screen.
I popped the back cover off and tightened/loosened screws to no avail. Turning the screen off and then back on does not help as it seems to do with some of the other screen issues that others are experiencing. The one thing I have found to strangely help is pushing on the screen in the affected location with extremely firm pressure; in essence squishing the s*** out of it. When I do this, the screen will behave better (it will still ghost touch in the area but my finger must be very close to the screen) for a period of time before reverting to misbehavior.
--
Has anyone else experienced something of this sort? I am currently running stock/rooted/unlocked; It seems to be a hardware issue so I don't think another ROM will help though I will try the CM10 nightlies when they boot properly. I'm ready to just bring it back for a new one but I know the Wal-Mart I bought it at is out of stock.
Any help would be very much appreciated, thank you.
Im having the same issue mine is in random places, usually top left corner but when im texting it starts typing random letters, I've been looking
for a solution or someone with the same issue you are the first and only that i have found. I am also having the dead spot issues, they tend to alternate.

Nexus 7 phantom taps
I'm having similar problems with my Nexus 7 bought in November. Worked fine for a while, now I'm getting phantom taps making typing a real pain and page scrolling can be frustrating when it suddenly scrolls to the top of the page! Anyone know if this is a warranty fix?
I had this happen one time. It freaked me out.

OP and others - have you look at the video here - post #1254 - look familiar to you at all - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1770919&page=126
A # of us had been freaked out, wondering if our secured WPA2 network has been breached and remotely controlled ...
If your device is brand new, return it & get it exchanged, or get it fixed under warranty - it's hardware related. The 16GB WiFi only model that I got from local Staples store had that problem that got worst - the replacement & upgraded 32GB unit has been flawless thus far - running stock but rooted 4.1.2 rom. I was within the 14 days/holiday time frame for exchange/return w/o stocking fees, luckily & did not have to wait for it to be repaired under warranty.
Upgrading to 4.2 firmware and/or custom Rom & kernel do not help, YMMV - of course ...
BTW, local Staples tech support counter manager said up to 20% of the N7 are getting returned/exchanged for various issues. Wow !!
After 4.2.2 my nexus7 makes phanton clicks too
Similar with this video www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tkh3W_ITwEw
I turn off screen and turn on and stop... The times in times i get it
Have solution?
I had to take my screen protector off after the update it was pressing places on the screen didn't happen until 4.2.2 update

[Q] Middle horizontal line of the screen no touch

Hi guys,
Last days my Nexus 4 start to have a problem:
the imaginary middle horizontal line of my touch doesn't work fine.....it's just a line!
It makes difficult to scroll o to posh down the notification bar, to tap or click and so on!
I'm not sure it's physically damaged!
I've installed CM 10.2 20131026.
I saw someone else have this kind of problem, but everyone is a noob! (About like me)
Just for info, I've tried to use the developer setting to "view the taps".... it confirmed the problem!
Thanks in advance guys!
Matteo
Nexus 4 on the roll!!!!
restore to stock and check if its still there, generally you use the phone for a few days to check if its alright before you flash
No solutions guys, now I've two horizontal not working lines!!!!! Digitizer broken maybe.....
Nexus 4 on the roll!!!!
Seems to be the same problem that I got. I also opened a thread here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2660476
And I did a bit of research and it seems to be a known hardware issue. I will return it with warranty I guess.
Edit: Take a look at my screens I did in the thread. Or try it on your own with any screen tester app.
I just had this happen to me. I just get the nexus 4 from t-mobile last week. And know the touch screen is no working in the middle of the screen. I got a replacement coming. But I was play with its some time work normal if I had it plug in for 30min or more..
I just like to know how common is this issue. I hope it not that common. because I just paid 30 for the phone the first time and now I paid 20 for the replacement. They gave me the option to get a different phone. I hope its just a uncommon thing. they did made over 500,000 phone.
its just a bad digitizer.
(its specific to some areas due to lg´s zero gap techonology)

[Q] temporary white spots on my N7 2012 display [PICS INCLUDED]. PLS HELP !!!

I recently bought a 2012 model Nexus 7 from an online store. Now I see some sort of issues with the display.
The display looks perfectly fine during normal operation. But during some instances like when I switch from one profile to another, I can see some white dots on screen mostly on the upper edges and sometimes in the middle of the screen. The dots disappear as soon as the transition is over and then its back to normal and no sort of issues then. This also happens sometimes when I rotate the device to landscape mode.
I could see this issue during only these 2 operations. Otherwise the display behaves just fine even when I am navigating through the app drawer.
Is this a normal thing?
Screenshots
Screenshots of the display showing the defects are attached herewith. Pls do check them.
It's present in nexus 7 (2012) since 4.4 update.
