[Q] Turning off the Proximity sensor - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is there anyway to turn off the Proximity sensor? My Nexus 4 is having an issue when ever I get a call the screen just turns black and not back on. I was wondering if there is any sort of edit in the prop files that can be edited or what not.

OK nevermind I tried smart screen and was able to manually control my screen from shutting off. If a mod wants to delete this thread go ahead.

Before closing the thread (or deleting it), could you share the exact app name with us (and its developer) in order to get the right one ?
there are a lot of apps with this exact same name. Thanks

Here is a link to said app. The app is called Smart Screen by Novum Inceptum Development

If you are facing problems with proximity sensor after screen assembly replacement just read this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=50523785 and you will get a working sensor again.

(Tip) Disable proximity sensor

When my wife got the Aria a couple of months ago, she loved it, and I figured I had finally brought her successfully into the age of smartphones. Now, she HATES it. The reason: The awful proximity sensor, that keeps turning the screen on while she's on the phone, resulting in her cheek hanging up the phone, or making calls while she's on a call.
I actually said to her "Just don't hold the phone that way", before laughing about making an iPhone 4 reference.
There has to be an app to disable the sensor, or configure it differently. I want her to love her phone and get back to playing Angry Birds.
Does your wife hold the phone in an unconventional way? I've never had any problems with the proximity sensor activating when the phone is placed to my cheek.
I hold my phone in my left hand with the speaker pressed close to my ear (the proximity sensor is in the top right corner of the phone) with the microphone end pulled ever so slightly from my cheek. If I want to check your phone, pull your phone from your ear horizontally from pull it down to view the screen.
As for settings, I would try this one:
Go to Settings > Call Settings > Always use Proximity and UNCHECK this option. I feel like this gives better results in regards to the sensor.
*Please note this setting is found under Cyanogenmod 7, and I'm not clear if this is found under the standard HTC Sense ROM.
Note:
Make your wife try hitting the LOCK button as soon she dials her number and hits talk. This should lock your screen and disable the proximity. (Again, im running Cyanogenmod 7 so i dont know if this is true for HTC Sense)

She holds it in the normal way, but since the sensor is on the top right, far from the speaker, and she has a tiny ear, she'd have to hold it in an unusual way to make it work.

I wish. Definitely not in the stock ROM.

Do you mean the power button? In that case, it definitely doesn't work in the stock ROM. I'm glad to know there's a setting in Cyanogenmod, so worst case I'll flash that. I didn't want to get her involved with flashing, since it isn't wife-friendly, but the poor proximity sensor placement, combined with the just stupid move of the Android devs assuming no one would need such a simple feature, isn't wife-friendly either, so I might as well.
I don't understand how on a phone this small, you don't immediately assume that you will have users smaller than average, and assume smaller ears. The sensor on my Rhodium is WAY closer to the center line, and it's more suited to bigger people.
I experience the same damn thing as well - it's annoying!!
I mostly have an issue with hitting the "Hold" button. What I did to fix this was to make the phone "left-handed" which moved the "Hold" button to the right-side and it seems I'm less likely to cheek-press it anymore.
This doesn't solve the issue with hitting the End Call button though. The funny thing is, is that it's hard to replicate too! I can literally hold the phone like 1cm away from my head and the screen won't come on - but once in a blue moon I will slightly adjust the phone on my ear while walking/driving and BAM - CALL ENDED! FRACKING ANNOYING!!!!
I have the opposite problem. I can't gang up without a fight to wake the phone up.

Would love it... but... it wasn't uploaded supporting the Aria's screen size, so it doesn't show in the Android Market for her. Any way to force it to install and run, or to recompile it for this screen?

I have replaced my screen and I have the problem where it will not wake unless I remove the battery :/. Tried this and it unfortunately does not disable the sensor, it only supposedly gives you "control" over it.

same problem but on HTC Legend after replace screen, with upsounddown display go to black screen anyway =( maybe anybody knows other way?
I solved this trouble on HTC Legend by adding
Code:
chmod 0000 /dev/cm3602
to init.d. Try this on your phone guys. thanks tamerlan311 for help

system/etc/init.d contains files that contain scripts.
Do I add
Code:
chmod 0000 /dev/cm3602
in a new file?
Also, before I do this, can anyone confirm that this script won't brick my phone but will do as mentioned - turn off the proximity sensor?
Thanks.

Yes, i use this solution for a long time, and no problem. Maybe it disable something else but i not to notice.
UksusoFF: Sorry to bother you like this, but can you explain me step by step how do I need to create that file and what code do I need to put in there?
I tried doing it with Root Explorer but it says that the folder is "Read-Only" so I cant create any file in there..
Thanks so much!

you need root and s-off for do this, and maybe custom recovery. read forum to know how to edit system partition on your phone. i can't write step-by-step manual becouse i don't speak in english =(
Sombody in the know this would be a sought after task.
I, like fmac, would appreciate if someone could give a step by step of how this procedure is done. I'm an Android user but HTC's are a little more touchy then what I'm used to. Rooting is not an issue for me, but whomever writes this up, may want to supply a link on that step for the folks just coming here for the first time. ARIAs have been out for a while and this problems fix is probably going to be heavily sought after.

Calibrate G Sensor

Hello,
can anyone tell me, how I can calibrate the g sensor with HD2/MAGLDR/CWM? I'm using Typhoon CM7 as OS. I've read something about fastboot, but I can't figure out how to enter it in my case. Would be happy, if someone can help me on that. For example I can't properly play Asphalt 5/6 - I always have to bend my phone right to drive straight ahead and that happens to be kinda annoying.
the calibration goes atomatically when you flash it so maybe that there is an app for it out then on the market but i'm not sure
Mh, then it did calibrate wrong. I need an app or something to calibrate it manually. I've already flashed my phone like 10 times and the calibration never was right.

I might very well be way off, but without reading anything about it, my instincts were to place the phone onto a level surface (confirmed using a level), then clicked on the calibrate button.
Might I have misinterpretted its function?
Thanks for your answer, but my problem is that I can't find any option or button to calibrate the G-Sensor. With the original Windows OS there was an option, but I can't find any in Android. Either I'm blind or you need to enter some special boot mode to calibrate. Doesn't anyone know? I don't think no one has calibrated the G-Sensor in Android yet?
You cannot calibrate in non sense roms. However there is an old thread which talks about editing AK8973Prms.txt file in /data/misc. I use this technique and it seems to work. I am not at home but search on the filename should bring it up.
Edit: here is the link.

I have downloaded an app from market called 'Bubble'. It has a calibrate option.

I've found that most apps which have a calibrate function work only within the app not globally across the system. By doing the above all apps which use the g-sensor I.e. games seem to work better.

[Q] Screen Rotation

Not quite sure where to post this, so I'll try here. Mods, please move to the correct forum if it is in the wrong one.
Back when the OG Droid came out, the screen could rotate all 4 ways (up, landscape left, landscape right, upside down). Never had a need for it, but it was cool. I noticed that as Android evolved, being able to hold your device upside down disappeared. Again, never had a need for it, so IO didn't care.
Now, I need it. In my car, I put the phone in the cupholder of my armrest/center console. Because the charging and headphone jack is on the bottom, I have to operate everything upside down. Is this an Android or manufacturer *feature* that was removed? Can it be put back? Can a mod be made to make it work?
I don't want a dock for my phone, I've had them before, and don't like them. I also like to have full control of my phone, not just what the manufacturer wants me to control.
Thanks.
There seem to be a few apps in the Play store that may help, here is one that looks promising:
Edit: can't post links. Do a search for Screen Rotation Control

I never thought to look for an app. Thanks, I'll check it out right now.
EDIT: Turns out it's a no-go. It has the option for reverse portrait, but it doesn't work.
If you have rooted your phone look for Roms that support this.

Ultimate Rotation Control by FAMEIT *does* support reverse portrait or at least the licensed version does. But I did root, not sure if that matters.
Good luck!

Dang. There were a few options but that one looked promising by the description.
Try a search in the app store for "Reverse Portrait" and give the free ones a shot...? Some seem to have a "force" option for when it doesn't happen automatically (or lock in reverse portrait). If they can be invoked with one click, it wouldn't seem too much of an inconvenience.
Edit: Rotation Control Lite was the one I was looking at, might try that myself.

Smart screen

So if anybody else like me is coming from the G2 and 3 you might be missing smart screen.. That little feature that detects your face while looking at the screen to keep the screen awake instead of fading out. I personally felt it a real convenience. I would like to get it back, I pulled the app from my G3 titled wise screen. I installed it like a normal app with success. I used activity launcher to try and launch it, but it fc's. So I'm guessing we'll need root to get it functional. When we do get root is there anyone else interested in joining me on this quest? I would really like to get this one up and running. I can't for the life of me understand why they left it off. I feel like I'm back on ics or jb with out it..

I have to agree with you. I am so surprised they took it out. I spent 30 min on the phone trying to find it. I tried the app the other post recommended, not as good, it will never turn the phone off in the car when the phone is mounted and the car is moving.
I, too, was looking for the smartscreen settings. Was surprised that LG decided to remove it. Will try the above mentioned kinscreen later
Anyone know if Samsung removed it from the S6? They started the feature and it was one of the more useful features they added to Touchwiz. I was glad when LG copied it. Most of the other stuff was junk, but that was actually useful.
That sucks. I wonder if they removed smart screen to keep the screen from running down the battery.

Here it is on the Verizon variant. Wow... this is the first time the Verizon version actually has something the others don't!
It's on the phone but doesn't seem to work. I don't see any place to enable it and creating an activity to open the app causes it to crash.
Never really worked for me on G2/3.
I miss this and have found an app on the play store that mimics it. It worked well for me on the G3.
Verizon has this. I disabled it though. It worked great on my G2 for the time I tested it. For me, I am typically using my phone while in the middle of doing something else. So it is a waste.

On Verizon, you can see the service - it is not an app - BUT there are no Settings I can find or know of that actually allow you to activate it or interact with it in anyway. So it is "there" but seems to do nothing and cannot be setup.
EDIT: I used the hidden Verizon menu and found this "smart screen" but when you click on it, it forecloses and crashes. So, it is as if that first part of the services is there BUT the actual functionality is not as using the hidden Verizon menu I cannot activate it and access settings or turn it on to work - and I would think from that hidden menu, we should.

Depending on what version of Android you have, you could go through permissions to see which apps allow camera use while app is running. Use the Permissions manager to do this.
Turn them off any suspect apps. If that doesn't do it, turn them off in batches until you narrow it down.

A good starting point: Disable for all applications that you side-loaded ... meaning, any apps that you didn't install from the Google Play store.
