32gb I337 to Black Edition S4 (Screen / front frame compatability) - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshootin

Hi I'm currently trying to rebuild and bring back to life an I337 that's in perfect working condition "except for screen and digitizer". Before anyone asks I did test it with another screen and all is fine and perfect. My question is can a Black Edition S4 (i9505) replacement screen and housing work or be compatible with the I337? I've heard mixed and unconfirmed answers that go from "the frame is different, to the pins being different". I've looked at and compared pics from both the backs of the i337 and i9505 and both appear identical and compatible with each other, also the slots for the components look very identical. I really hope the pin connectors are the same cause if so all I would need if the housing is the only thing different would be a i337 front housing and my heat gun to stick the screen to it. All feedback is welcomed and I hope I can get this up and running real soon so I can post pics on here of the project. On a side note I got the i337 32gb for a whopping expensive $100 and if all works out the total investment would be less then $360 for a 32gb Black Edition i337.

Is the 9505 screen replacement cheaper? Why not get one that says i337? I'm looking at replacing the lcd/digitizer on my wife's phone. Was just curious. In my thinking there probably isn't any difference in the part. I'm not 100% though.

Yes! Of course it's cheaper but the point to this, is to make my phone look different and unique (more premium!). I don't mind paying an extra $40 for that, plus I never liked the sapphire look. It's not really much of a difference in pricing.

I believe it was established somewhere that a replacement I9505 screen works fine on I337. I don't see why it wouldn't, I doubt they'd take that much time to vary hardware by each model.

Thanks for that concrete and informative answer. I ordered the part yesterday with my fingers crossed and I've also compared front and back picks of both i337 and i9505 motherboards, and after close inspection I could not see any differences in how the circuits looked meaning that it should work. Of course I know they are different inside but outside they look exactly the same so I'm no longer worried about it not working. All that's left is the rebuild and probably posting pics and even a YouTube link if the site let's me. Thanks and hope to post that soon.

Update: Rebuild Complete
Hi to the people interested in this post, I'm just checking back to update everyone that the I337 Black Edition project has been completed and a 100% successful (except for a very small hurdle with the front frame). Now I only have a few questions. 1) How would I go about posting a tread with the images I took of the work? 2) How do I go about enabling AWS for my tmobile service and even installing a tmobile rom with wifi calling in the safest or easiest way possible (if possible) 3) As of this date is this phone still hard to work on "installing CWM, TWMP, etc) 4th) is there any free or easy way to Sim unlock the device? All feedback is greatly appreciated.

1) Start a thread in the general section and it has options to add pictures.
2) You can't do it if you have 4.4. Otherwise, look for the aws thread in the general section. I can't link it from mobile.
3) Still no custom recovery but Safestrap.
4) The "Possible sim unlock for MK2" thread is the only option for unlock, it involves using Safestrap to flash and old modem and either using an app or using service codes.

Don't forget the micro SD card & if you don't need a case right away, you can find better options with better prices online & enjoy your S4

[Q] Possibly switching to S4

I currently have a nexus 4 and with a small drop hairline crack half of my digitzer touch screen (upper portion) is unresponsive to touch.
I am currently with Telus, I can if I choose get a S4 for 150 on a 2 year term based on the retention phone call I just had. Can this phone be flashed to a stock image? Like my nexus 4 or would I always have to use samsung roms? I was using Paranoid android for the longest time and liked it very much.
What are everyone's suggestions. I could also possibly buy the samsung from Google Play store if this may be a better option have a us address. I however dont feel like spending $600. But I very well could! I do use T-Mobile sometimes when I travel to the states if this impacts anything.
Thanks
Hunter
questions go in q&a.
you can flash samsung (touchwiz) roms or stock android (aosp-based) roms on your S4 when you receive it.
It can be flashed to the google play stock rom. Check the dev thread for the rom..
Beware that the latest att update locked down the bootloader and is no longer able to be bypassed via loki meaning no roms and no root. T mobile and sprints bootloader is unlocked.

I would suggest getting it from a store so you can make sure it doesn't have the mf3 update. With it there is I root and messes up a whole bunch of stuff at the moment. imo

So after the phone call its only $99.00 to get switched. I may send my Nexus 4 away as well to get fixed. I probably could have a good crack it, but the risk to benefit ratio. Is just not there. New phone is $300.00 meanwhile the part is at least $100.00 Plus a very complicated repair. I recently just did a macbook air so I know what I am doing. Its just the macbook air was worth a lot more for the price of the component. I am a managerial accountant so I tend to maximize dollars in a cost benefit ratio.
BTW this forum is the best!

I know, but with loving my skyrocket and the great devs we have I just don't know right now. Actually I hope it craps out because then the decision would be made. But I might pony up the cash for a ge.
Be careful, this thing cracks even easier than the Nexus 4. When it does, the AMOLED is much more likely to crack than the outside gorilla glass and if the AMOLED cracks, the entire display will be likely dead. Make sure you get something better than bumper-like cases like the SPIGEN Neo Hybrid case, they will still flex when dropped at most angles.
Dropped mine from about 4 feet and killed it. :crying: Samsung will charge you $200 out the door to get it fixed. Which, once it is fixed, honestly makes me want to sell it and buy an off-contract Sony Xperia Z or Xperia Honami (when it comes out) and IMO, the Xperia Z is much more gorgeous than the GS4 Active.
Sorry, I didn't mean to thread jack or anything. I love this phone's feature set, but durability is an important thing when you buy something like this on or off contract. It's an investment that should last the test of time. I understand I dropped it, but all of my previous devices could take a much better beating before croaking.
Keep this in mind, people have had their's crack sitting innocently in their pockets. Buy a GOOD case if you buy this phone.

[Q] New VZ LG G2 - shows "Rooted" out of box?!?

Got my new LG G2 on Thursday - enjoying things so far, no complaints... Except I looked under status, and my phone says "Rooting status: Rooted"... Anyone else experience that?
I haven't tried to do anything to it (yet), aside from accepting the OTA update... The only other curveball so far was that activation took awhile, the SIM it came with didn't match the order paperwork, and I had to figure that out for myself...
Looking for everyone's thoughts and/or guidance about what to do... On the one hand, I might root it myself once I am certain I am keeping it. On the other hand, I am worried what would happen if the phone develops issues and I needed to return it or whatnot..
Send it back asap and tell then the phone is used and how you know it's used.

Yea it's a restock at a non corporate store...somebody paid the 35 bucks to get VZN to wipe and put back in the box. That's why they won't let you leave without a screen protector. ..or at least keep suggesting one till you say sure now stfu

Tell them you'll keep it, but you know it was a return, so you want a partial refund.
Glad you got a restocked phone....Raise all hell and get a new phone.
Did your phone have all the plastic on it when you unboxed it? Should have been 2 on the metal outer ring. One around the camera. One over the back buttons. Front.back. and bottom of back. (Last one is some type of retail sticker or something. Didn't really read it. Just ripped it off and threw it out)

Sure didn't look like a restock. Had all the plastic: front, back, 2x along the sides, camera, buttons... I ordered it online and it was shipped to me; wouldn't that reduce chances it was a restock, or am i missing something...?
Not on the same phone, but I had a gnote 2 that came pre-bootloader unlocked. No screen cracks, nothing. It was sweet.

hmm. maybe they are preping a pre-rooted one for vzw? LOL ... who am i kidding. they would never do that.
Just after the phone was released, someone else posted that their phone said that it was rooted as well. If you're going to root anyway, I wouldn't worry about it. If not, you may want to exchange it (unless you want to revert to stock yourself - there's a thread that tells how to do that too).
Edit: here's the thread I was talking about. Read from post #20.

I have not seen much about this phone. It's a cheap ( no exact price yet) small sized phone to test out tmobile's lte if you want to think about switching away from big V like me.

Now $149. I'd grab it if I could root it. Zero development on this device and this is the only thread even discussing it. Shame but not surprising. You're almost better off to get an old phone that has plenty of options than a new one with none.
Sounds very interesting. I hope it will be released in Europe soon too.
I've read that that it reaches an antutu score around ~17000+. First an only 4'' phone with a quad core at the moment.!
But, does anybody know if it has a light sensor to adjust the brightness automatically?
Lol some guy wanted to trade me the Light for my One S...
Seeing that its pretty...new and no dev'ment yet, its a no.
Thats the same exact reason I got rid of my ol Boost Mobile LG Venice.
Besides, I'm not a fan of mediocre carrier service.
It sounds appealing though, i mean 1gb ram tied in with quad core, clocked at 1.4GHz not bad.
But its using TFT screen technology sized at 4 inches, a 5mp cam and a 0.3mp front. What sort of odd combo is that?
At least they should have given it an AMOLED then maybe the miniature screen would make some sense.
If you ask me, its like a merged Galaxy Prevail and a Galaxy S. Good for those who want something cheap yet preformance
worthy (I guess) but for a quad core device, ratings for it on many review sites are depressingly low. Hey at least it
has NFC, but still all that preformance on a TFT screen will make playing games feel like your on an older device.
I think the screen alone was a let down for me.
It does not make my list, nor capture my attention. My guess is, NAY.
I just got this phone. Any clue how to root it? I don't want to brick it following the s4 method.
Does anyone know how to network unlock this phone?
I just got this phone before leaving on vacations and can't seem to find a way to network unlock it so that I can use it outside the U.S.
I have tried all popular unlocking methods for S3's and S4's but none seems to work.
There is another thread about rooting this phone, but noone has figured out how to do it, just yet. I guess the new kernel is causing some issues. Anyway, the other thread is here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2539232 I will be picking this phone up as soon as I am able. The small size and the quad core and the speed is also what I have read. As I am not a gamer, the screen is fine. LTE and NFC are features I would use. It's like Samsung figured out that if a user isn't gaming, a big high-end screen isn't as important as speed of connectivity. The gamers have the S4. The rest of us get the Light.

There is one. Stock, but debloated and optimized. I have not tried it myself yet, as I don't have a 2nd phone in case things go awry, But it looks very promising.

So I was going to try the LightWave ROM but I have some concerns... Is this going to lock my SIM out, and keep me from accessing my network? Because,I also do not have a second phone to goof off with this one, and if I brick (or worse, get locked out of the data network)I'm screwed. So does anyone know if this locks out T-Mobile's network? Thanks in advance!
On an irrelevant side note, if anyone is using a stock (w/root) ROM and are tired of TouchWiz, I actually figured out how to dump it! There is an app in the Google Play store called "System app remover (ROOT)" and all i did was looked for touchwiz in the app and deleted it. Sorry for rambling.

I can't guarantee you won't brick your phone. Nobody can guarantee anything when you start flashing things. Once you have TWRP though, it's really hard to screw things up irreparably.

That's dangerous. I wouldn't recommend doing that, but if you must, always do backups first.

Am I screwed?

Well I have a bit of a problem here....I rooted my phone and I had CWM installed and I was trying to restore my rom but that didn't work not I have to take it to best buy cause it's stuck in a boot loop so I was scared that I voided my warranty now I smashed my phone to make sure they don't be able to check how many times I flashed my phone think they'll give me another one if they can't check it? this is kinda urgent.
That is called fraud and is not encouraged / supported in any form on xda. Sounds like you simply needed to flash stock images and you would have been fine. Instead you went with the falcon punch method. An ambitious move, but not very effective at yielding a working device

I just hope they can give a replacement and my USB wouldn't work anyways cause it would always keep restarting even when I plugged it up so I couldn't flash the smashing was my only method I have insurance I just hope for the best I can get a replacement.
Still fraud in my opinion. Man up you know what you get yourself into when you you root your phone (it voids your warranty). You messed up your phone so pay the price.
