GeoHot's Moto G Pledge - Moto G General

I've noticed that GeoHot stated this on his towelroot thread:

v2 is live! More support. Reboot on your own time.
Still no new HTC/Moto support from phones without writable system.
If someone is willing to give me one of these phones for testing I'll add support.

The Moto G seems to be a good candidate, since it's very cheap (179$ the unbranded 8gb version, not sure if the 70$ verizon prepaid version is suitable for this) and should be enough for exploiting. Unfortunately I can't afford to buy one by myself, but with a bunch of pledges we can probably collect enough money for buying one for GeoHot. Probably this is the only concrete way to have a working root exploit with a locked bootloader.
I can start with a 20$ pledge. Anyone else?
Pledged:
20$ - Azarielz
20$ - BlueFlame4
10$ - super65man
5$ - giulio_splash
55$ pledged of ~179$ goal

Sounds like a good idea. We better go for the unbranded version for 179$.
So I would add 20$. How can we donate to GeoHot?

He has a paypal address he uses for the bounties ([email protected]). So when the needed money is pledged we can send everything directly to him, obviously taking care to note the transaction id.
40$ so far, good!

So I sent geohot a PM to see if he is interested in a spare XT1028 I've got. It's verizon pre-paid which means no boot loader unlock, so not sure if it will work for him or not. Will post a f/u when I hear back.

Great! We'll wait for his response.
If it will do the job and he'll manage to make towelroot working with Moto devices, we should turn all the pledges (not much so far, but better than nothing) into donations for him.
Every new pledger is welcome then!

$55 is enough to get him the Verizon variant of the moto g from best buy. If he figures it out, the same method should work with all moto g's. As for getting him to respond. I would contact a xda mod and see if they can get a hold of him.

All infos in there.
Love that they are getting these out early I know a number of US devs have said they will only pick up the dev version, not a carrier one.... so yay
I preordered the AT&T version but thinking about changing to this. Will the AT&T version get roms (like CM10) or will it be too difficult for devs? Also, does the AT&T version have any AT&T branding on it!?
Am I the only one who can't find the link to the phone? It keeps showing phones sold now by Sprint, etc

It's also not 10am EST yet. May have something to do with whether or not it shows up in their system.
I'm going with this one because of the great price(64gb) and unlocked bootloader.
I cancelled my preorder with handtec, worth the extra 1 week wait.
I wish I could get this in Canada
Does anyone know about the international warranty status of the Dev Edition?
Anything different from regular warranty?
I'm really on the fence here. I love the idea of owning a limited edition dev phone from HTC, but I don't really need 64GB of storage and the price just seems unreasonable right now since there's the $100 trade in offer and free accessories form AT&T and T-Mobile when you pre-order through them.
I really need someone to clarify this for me. Does Dev phone will get HSPA+/4g and LTE or it will only get 2g and LTE in some area?

That's right. Depends on if the area you're in has been refarmed for 1900mHz
how does the preorder work? do they charge your card for the full amount or preauthorize a small amount and then charge the rest when it ships?
So where are they? They just added the sprint and Tmobile versions to the HTC US Sales site. No dev.

Thanks for the link!! I submitted yesterday about 2:00 pm (U.S. EST) and got my code a little after midnight last night. The savings offered by the code appear to actually be only $30 off the 8GB model and $40 off the 16GB. Can somebody else confirm this please. It's possible that they might send out different codes perhaps?? Anyway, still a nice discount!!
EDIT: The code is good for $50 off the Moto X

[Q] Is it worth it to sell your 16gb Moto X for a 32gb Dev Edition?

I have been regretting having only 16gb of storage on my moto X since all my other android items have 32gb and I somehow manage to burn through the 16gb all the time. I have also not had any luck getting root back since upgrading to 4.4 and am pretty bummed that no one has figured out how to unlock the bootloader. Has anyone ditched their basic 16gb moto x for a 32gb Dev edition? I am thinking it might be worth the extra hundred dollars or so since moto is having a sale on them. Vote and help decide the fate of my phone!:good:
I just did exactly what you are pondering and I'm happy with my decision. Took advantage of the recent $100 off deal to get my DE for $350, and I'll be selling my 16GB once I switch it over.
32gb not enough for me. Need 64gb or better yet 128gb. I'd settle for 32gb internal with micro SD card slot.

Another line on our Verizon account was eligible for an upgrade, I have unlimited still. Upgraded the other line at a big box store to a 16GB for $1, swapped devices, purchased dev edition, activated, sold 16GB, sold the old Droid X and the net was $107 for a DE, other family member got an upgrade from Droid X to Gnex, and a 2 year renewed contract for them and I got to keep unlimited.
I'd sell it for the DE any day; double the memory, unlockable with warranty, easy everything. Super happy with my Verizon DE. Then again, I only had a standard black/woven black 16GB for less than 24 hours.
For 50 bucks more I'd get a DE without question. But I'm in Canada, so I got the regular X...but I'm extremely happy. And I'd never need 32gb....but that's me.
I'd still have gotten the DE tho....if I could have.
Sent from my Moto X cellular telephone...
I think the dev edition is worth it. Especially if you need 32gb. The unlocked bootloader is also great since you never have to worry about root getting locked down.
People keep talking like rooting and stuff is easier and/or better on the DE. LOL. Its no different in that way whatsoever than any other x that you can unlock the boot loader.
Exactly the same everything. Only difference is warranty stays in tact....otherwise no different than any other unlockable X.

32+ gigs and unlockable bootloader. Developer edition or not, those are things I would never compromise on any phone. Even if the phone came rooted out of the box, having an unlocked bootloader gives you the freedom to modify things you otherwise could not or should not. It's almost like asking freedom vs imprisonment., actually it's exactly like that.

Yes, useless morons with the best coverage, and logo's I couldn't care less about.
After moving from Verizon to T-Mobile I can honestly say their coverage is overrated, but I think his point was to buy Dev editions from Motorola and you wouldn't have these issues. I would have gotten a Verizon Dev edition until Verizon explained that even If I buy a phone cash I still have to pay their overpriced monthly charges including subsidies for phones I bought years ago. Screw that. T-Mobile all day every day the savings is worth it.

BOUNTY: unlock bootloader for CDMA Moto G at [$250]

Requirements to Receive Bounty
To earn the bounty, you simply have to find the exploit which will allow the following. You do not have to develop a recovery, or a kernel or a ROM, but you must provide with a working proof of concept, i.e. with a way which allows us to verify that the bootloader has been completely unlocked and that other developers can use this method to install recovery, kernel and ROMs.
Other owners of the MOTO G XT1028 will then test your method, that when we give the bounty to who earns after we successfully test.
WE HAVE $250 for and unlocked bootloader and $60 for ROOT
The following people have pledged the following amounts for an unlocked bootloader unless stated otherwise.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Triumph750 -- $20
DragonRyderX -- $20 to 30
tstivers1990 -- $20
NWKENT -- $75 for Unlocked, $30 for Root exploit
luna_joao -- $20
d4rk3 -- $20 to $50
pfroo40 -- $20 For Root
motrinHD -- $20
mvnsnd -- $20
shorenster -- $20
hexed6 -- $25
JooseyJay -- $10 for Unlock, $10 For Root
SO FAR WE HAVE $250 for and unlocked bootloader and $60 for ROOT.
Honestly, I'm just interested in root without unlocking the bootloader. And we need to leave something open for the possibility of a work around, such as the bootstrap methods used on other phones.

I would be down for donating 20 to 30 bucks for some ROM flashing abilities. Allow the XT1028 to have a recovery and I will show my gratitude monetarily. Bonus if someone could mimic the DROID3's safestrap "ROM slots" ability. Swap roms almost instantly is awesome. Where is HASHCODE when we need him!?
Sorry, probably a dumb question but would this allow the Boost version of the Moto G to be unlocked as a GSM phone as well or just CDMA?
Thanks

If you have a *.edu email address, you can actually get a better deal. It's $339 off contract for the 16GB, or $389 for the 32GB or Dev edition. Just used it to get a new Dev Edition!
Edit: Found the link: motorola.com/college

this is 60 $ code
so take it or if u don t need it i ll use for myself
How many Moto x's do you have? I've seen you ask for codes twice.....and now you can use this one?
Still.....I've never seen anyone here ask to profit from a discount code. Just saying. If no one gave you one, I suspect that's cause no one had one at that time? :l

I don't have the moto x but PM me
Well, I gave away my last discount code a few weeks ago, and now my wife has decided she wants a Moto X. Does anyone have a promo code that they're not going to use? I would greatly appreciate any help ... thanks!
The Moto X is launching in India on 19th March, and I desperately want this phone. Does any one have a promo code for me to use at checkout??
Any more codes around?
Edit: nevermind, I used my .edu address to save 60 bucks...I wish this phone roulette wheel would let me off already!!
