hi everybody, I use my s4 everyday and sometimes my phone dies before getting home. The main battery drainer is of course the screen, so I noticed that the new Galaxy S5 has a new feature, the ultra power saving mode, which above the other things set the display rendering to grayscale, which can be very useful in terms of battery life in an AMOLED screen as far as I know. I think it would be nice if there would be something like that on the S4 though, the display colours are great but sometimes you just don't need them, and they only drain precious life juice from our phone... Is there something like that for the S4? I'm not looking for something which turns itself on automatically when battery is low, I'm fine with a manual application (maybe a switch on a widget)... is there anything like that? Is it really convenient for the battery?

You can find the ported power saving mode from the S5 here:

Or there are apps that provide similar functionality below:

Try C.F.lumen by chainfire. Turns everything greyscale, not just the launcher. Tried it so far, it seems to save some juice, but havent done any scientific testing so hard to say for sure
try this
this the easy step to get greyscale mode like samasung galaxy s5 UPSM on any android ,,, i hope this help

Hi
i don't particularly have problems with the battery life of my s4, but sometimes i get weird drains, like 25% overnight. The weird thing is i deactivate every toggle except for flight mode and battery saving mode. I thought it's rather peculiar that my battery drains in what in my opinion should be like the most battery friendly mode i could think of.. anyone any suggestions on how to solve this? On the first picture i dont really complain about the first 2 drops because that could be caused by gaming, but maybe it's in there too, the last one however is with all toggles off from a certain point (you can see my wifi and screen turn off), but there isn't really a change in steepness of dropping... the second picture is my toggle setup. Any help would be appreciated

I have exactly same problem! Any ideas?
well as always... first check your wakelocks with better battery stats (free on xda forums).
i had a drain over night too. even on my s2.
it was my routers fault... bought a new one and drain is fixed.
but maybe it's just an app for you which gets your phone out of stand by. so check out better battery stats
Same here. Already used better battery stats. Nothing suspicious which could've drained the battery that much
Send from my Galaxy S4 packed with awesomeness

TRy installing greenify it will tell u which apps are breaking sleep state and u can hibernate it i easily reach 6 plus hrs on my device
And try to delete unused samsung bloatware
Gaming ofcource. I know.
But im wondering what "gimmicky" features are the most power sucking.
What about hand gesture during standby? Does that leave camera on?
What about finger hover?
What about the rest?
Wich are not heavy on battery and wich are?
Thanks.

The screen of course.
To maximise battery life, it is recommended, you do not use the phone at all.
I guarantee you will have outstanding battery life if you hardly touch your phone at all.
I haven't done extensive testing, but I have noticed that even though I get incredible deep sleep over night (95%), my phone still uses a lot of battery over an 8 hour period (15-25% - as opposed to my SGS3 which would use <10%).
I thought at first maybe it was the Air gesture -> Quick glance feature, as it will have to monitor the gyroscope constantly and if the phone is flat (which it is over night for me), then it'll have the gesture sensor on as well. Last night I tried turning that feature off (actually i turned all motion and gesture, smart screen, and air view features off), and there was no noticable improvement in battery life overnight, so it seems that my problem is still there, but also that the gimmicky feature doesn't actually appear to use too much battery.
Note; the gesture stuff doesn't use the camera, it has it's own sensor.
the Air view (i assume this is what you're referring to when you say finger hover) feature won't use more battery as it's only active in certain apps, so will only use more battery while those apps are active.
Ok that sounds actually quite good made by samsung then...although weird you lose so much battery. Maybe the rom and kernel you have?
Maybe some applications you use ? Try WakeLock Detector or Greenify from Google Play Store
i think the most power battrey goes to screen. and second goes to signal mobile network.if the signal low, that will consume more battrey because always search for better signal
The screen and signal. As above, the phone will consume extra battery searching/adjust the signal to make sure you have a good reception. There are different schools of thought but I have most battery life when on WiFi.

hey guys,
i tried today mirroring my navigation app to the EPD screen.
in my mind, it should save some battery, but actually checking the battery percentage, I didn't notice any improvement over just using the main screen.
what do you think guys? does it really save battery?
THX
Using the epd saves battery only if it doesn't need to be updated. If the screen is redrawn all the time then the savings are minimal if not nonexistent. Personally I habe disabled all the animations from developer settings, but mainly it depends on the app how efficient it is.
You might also want to look at this: http://m2appmonitor.com/google-maps...e-2-most-popular-android-gps-navigation-apps/
I suspect that the screen is actually not the most draining thing in the app. .. I found that with Waze my old Samsung phone would barely be able to charge even when plugged in and running the app... and you don't need that sort of power when looking at the screen!
Having now used the Z5 (Normal Version) for about 2 months, I have noticed one major thing about Stamina function. It is an absolutely amazing feature that does a great job in saving battery life *BUT*, and it is a big but, if you really want to enjoy your phone then this needs to be turned off because it greatly inhibits performance.
Things that I have noticed include:
"OK Google" commands works intermittently
Camera load time is slow
Style Cover widget lags
System updates don't download automatically, also seem struggle in finishing app updates from the store
Maybe it is not an issue if you do not use those features but because I do and it is proving to be a real stumbling block in allowing me to enjoy an otherwise excellent device.
What's your experience with Stamina Mode? Have you got any tips to make it work better or came across any issues yourself?
I don't really use it myself except for at overnight (it's my alarm clock) but you haven't mentioned if you've also enabled "Extended usage" which "Restricts device performance in to increase battery time". Maybe you'll have a better experience with that OFF?
From my understanding, how STAMINA mode works is to pause all apps that it could when the screen is off. So the battery life is extended because less apps are running when you are not using the phone. Hence the phone enters deep sleep and this results in the laggy experience you encountered. When a number of applications return to normal state at the same moment, that would be a time several processes compete for CPU time and that could be one of the reasons that cause the phone to be laggy after waking up from long idle. Battery life and performance is often a trade-off and therefore your experience sounds normal to me.

If you click on the "stamina mode" entry (not the on/off button), you can add apps to a whitelist who will not be affected.
I have no need for stamina mode on my Z5, the battery life is more than enough for me...
On my Z1 i always had stamina mode enabled, otherwise the battery didn't last the day.

Thanks for all your replies. So I only have the standard stamina mode on and not the extended one and I have also tried adding apps to the whitelist hoping that it will improve performance for those apps but I don't think it has made any difference.
heihei_ivan, that is also my thinking behind why I think the phone is laggy when waking up but I just didn't think it would affect it that much.
I think what I will do now is to turn stamina mode off and see how long it will last. Like Snaqejack, I think it might actually be ok!
I personally don't understand why people buy an octacore high end high powered HD screen smart phone and then go... Right lets activate everything which restricts performance, smartphone usage, syncs and pushes, dims the screen to the minimum etc... Might as well just bought a lower spec model in the first place
I understand using those settings for things like night time, when the battery is low, if you're out for the day and don't need your phone particularly for anything but receiving the odd call or text etc... But for continuous use 24/7 i just don't get why people do it

They're just trying to cheat physics - everyone wants a free lunch
I configured Stamina Mode to auto-enable when I reach 15% battery left. That's the best compromise I think.

I can guarantee you I am not one of those people, however, Stamina mode is one of the phone's main USPs but what I am noticing is that it seems to induce lag when performing a variety of tasks even though the specific option to cap performance in Stamina mode isn't turned on.
You need to put Google Play Services on the white list and Google Framework IIRC. This becouse several apps depend on these services to have internet access like for example Facebook Messenger. Else they wont work properly, you might get logged out or they will restart once you go back.
thanks
Battery life astonishingly high after charging...
The first picture is without stamina mode and second one with stamina mode
Those estimates never accurate, that's only for a phone that's not doing anything on it just sit on your table standby mode, might as well buy a regular flip phone.

With and without stamina mode
Awesome Man....
I've used Stamina mode for a long time, but I decided recently to turn it off completely, as an experiment, not just on this phone, but on my Z3 too.
I never use the low battery mode because it always turns stuff off when I still want to use it, so no point for me.
I must say that in real time, Stamina mode doesn't make a great deal of difference to me, plus now I get all of my notifications if I leave my mobile internet on. My WiFi is set to turn off when the screen is off. I know it's automatically set to Always on when you first get the phone, and that kills the battery.
I still get at least a full days usage out of whichever phone I use the most that day, and several days from the phone I use the least. I tend to swap using phones from one to the other, and back again.
Stamina mode only works when you're not using your phone, and for me that's not a lot of my day really. I do use them regularly.
I was quite surprised at how long they do last, even without Stamina mode.
Stamina mode is good for work so you don't get notifications while you're working, just at break times when you check your phone. My kids moan at me for not getting my WhatsApp messages or whatever when I have Stamina mode on too, so there is that

Actually, Wifi will not kill the battery, mobile data will. It's always better to keep wifi on and use 2G as that has a much stronger signal and won't impact battery.
Do you think the state of the "always on " really saving battery power than normal mode ?
There is some research that ?
I suppose you are asking: is the Samsung always-on mode better than a simple application that enables some kind of always-on screen ?
My answer is: no, the Samsung's always-on display is not a special power-saving mode. It is as bad as any application that shows a screen all the time.
GSMArena battery rating for S7 Edge without always-on display is 98h, and with the always-on display is 67h. So the always-on display eats a lot of battery.
On the other hand, the LG G2 has a rating of 60h without always-on display, and 50h with always-on display, so LG has a true efficient always-on mode, while Samsung is just like a simple application.

It's not saving power as it's still pixels that the battery has to power, especially since the clock and calendar has to move around the screen to prevent burn in on the AMOLED panels. While it doesn't use a lot of power, it still draws from the overall battery life of the device. If you're away from the charger for extended periods of time then i'd suggest not having always on display enabled but if you're able to plug in int the middle of the day if your battery gets low, then it shouldn't be a problem.
Yea. I thought I was going to like the AOD but I don't. For one I can definitely see an increase in battery usage and I also hate how it moves around the display. I know it's nessesary for image burn but while I'm at work, I keep my phone in a stand and every time the clock moves around the screen it makes me glance at it. Just got annoying after a while.
Sent from my SM-G935T using Tapatalk
It eats 3% per 9hrs for me on exynos. Pretty good if you ask me
It's really a question of how much you use your phone as a clock. If you're constantly turning it on just to check the time and turning it right off, then yes, it can save power because turning the whole screen on just to check the time will use more power. Otherwise, if you wear a watch or have another source of time handy (or just don't bother tracking time that closely) and only check the clock occasionally on your phone, then you're probably better off with it off.
Of course personal preference is also a factor, but I'm just talking about the so called "battery saving" logic behind it. It'd have more potential for saving battery if it showed you your notifications like the Moto AOD does.

you meant LG G5; and yes, they seem to have developed their AOD better; in fact I think that they prepared it for a longer time and Samsung just implemented it empirically (probably using a developer like the one that delivers NoLED)
sure, AOD notification in LG G5 is much smaller and less bright but it gets the job done nonetheless
on the other hand, Samsung should really put a timer for AOD (during night I cannot stop it, just replace it automatically with night clock which is dimmer) and adjust the brightness; they have enough sensors and algorithms in order to achieve that; one forum member suggested that I should just turn the phone with the back side up, but this way I cannot see the led notification in case of missed events during muted....
also, anyone can tell for sure whether AOD or night clock is is more energy efficient???
