Thanks for this: didn’t know about this so far. It was an issue for me as well, but didn’t know sms notification could show like this, gmail and other does same.
Just found this post and set this and it works awesome. Thanks a lot. Very helpful feature.

Preview used to be the default method of displaying notifications, but they changed it since 4.3 and added a setting for it. PRivacy thing, I believe.
I guess some people apparently didn't want the messages from their secret love affairs showing up as readable on their phone when leaving it on the dinnertable.

Idk if its something I doing or what but please need help.

My Nexus doesn't care for some things sent from iphones, for instance, contact cards ad slide shows. I just assumed it was an incompatibility between formats.
I seem to be having the same problem it shows me a notification for the message but when clicked on it sends me to the compose no message or the original msg thread.
For me what seems to be the issue is I turn off data or have wifi on and the message wont come through

"Message alert" setting in a contact doesn't work

Setting a unique "Message alert" for a contact doesn't work. I mean, yes I can set it, but when I get a message from that contact, the phone still plays the default message notification and not the unique one I just set for that contact. This is getting really frustrating.
I'm assuming, of course, that this "Message alert" is for SMS or MMS messages, at the very least. I'm running Android 4.2.2 (stock OS with SGS4 SGH-M919).
I looked on another phone running Android 4.0 -- that setting isn't there, so maybe it is a new and buggy addition? Can someone give this a test to see if it works?

bump!
Is it that difficult for one person to give this a test? At the very least? I mean, if this is not an issue with any other SGS4, then it would be nice to know. But if it is an issue with the SGS4, then it is certainly worth investigating! Is it an SGS4 issue, or is it as widespread as any device with Android 4.2.2?
bump
You people gotta be kidding me!!! second try at creating this question thread, 100 views and NOT ONE PERSON WILL EVEN TRY FOR A MOMENT TO CONFIRM OR DENY THIS ISSUE!!! wow! not a single response! These forums are very often very helpful! But what luck I am having with this thread!
No love at all!!
grrrr!!
Ya'll are pathetic.... just really felt like sayin' that!
I've helped a lot of people on xda in the short amount of accumulated time I've spent here.... just kinda makes me want to say nothing when I can help.
Found this searching for the same issue, you're not alone... Tried setting up a distinct messaging alert for a contact but it doesn't change, still plays the same default tone I have set up for all other text messages. Anyone come up with an answer for this by chance?
Solved by downloading "SMS Popup" from the play store, different notification sounds for individual contacts work fine with it.

Setting custom notifications works...
my device is 100% stock.
I set them from contacts app.
Not sure if you have anothet setting throwing it off.
Try looking in your main notifications settings to see if everything is default.

Group Text / Messaging Woes

Let me first start by saying that I know there are a ton of threads out there supporting issues with users who switch from and iPhone to an S4 and not being able to receive ANY group messages. this is NOT one of those cases.
I have an S4 on AT&T, rooted, stock rom. i use the included/stock SMS/MMS app for my messaging purposes. I know there are alternatives, but this is bugging the crap out of me, so here I go:
I have a group message going with 3 other people with details as follows: Contact 1 - t-mo Windows Phone 8x, Contact 2 - AT&T iPhone 4s, Contact 3 - Verizon S4. When i send a group message, EVERYONE receives it as a group message. when Contacts 1 and 2 respond to the group, i see it as grouped, as does everyone else. When Contact 3 responds, Contacts 1 and 2 see his response as grouped, however, I receive it as an individual message.
This behavior has been consistent on every rom i've tried (unfortunately being on MF3 i'm kinda limited to Tw based, but I digress). If i use textra, chomp, gosms, Contact 3's responses show as part of the group, not individual. what's weirder about this is if I head back to the stock app after Contact 3 responds and his response shows in the group; but when i use the stock app, the aforementioned behavior occurs.
I have literally (at least I think) tried everything beyond a "reflash" suggested by samsung support.
a couple of "requirements" that I've already checked:
1. group messaging - checked
2. mms - enabled
3. mobile data - enabled
i'm getting to my wits end with this. any assistance ANYONE can offer would be amazing!
thanks!
Ha, guess in the only one this is affecting. :/ damn

I have searched and searched as well.. My scenario is close to the same. Any group message my girlfriends is included on (verizon Note II) the exact same thing happens. Her message I receive as a individual separate message, and everyone else receives it in the group.
P.S. Im on an AT&T S4
anyone else?
Fixed the issue. Left the s4 got an HTC one. Couldn't be happier.

That's a sure bummer. Tons of people are switching devices because of things similar to this and of course MF3 locking things up. Referring to your message (although you switched), on my S4, I have that problems sometimes. I also sometimes receive the group message in our individual convo allowing me to download it. After downloading it, it appears in the group chat. Odd behavior.
Glad you found a fix.
I usually have use MMS for group chats on textra and it works fine for me but you have to be on 4g for it to push and send.

Group messaging

I just switched from a Verizon note 3 to a sprint note 3 and noticed there is not group messaging option that will send separate message to others. usually there would be a check mark that says group conversation and you can uncheck that to send the same txt message to multiple people without them seeing it. I figured I would tri the S5 Moar port but I cannot get Wifi calling to work on it and its a necessity but it has the type of messaging app I need can someone please help me. I am currently on Vision X rom

go to messages-setting-sms/mms untick group messaging. done
here is a screenshot I am talking about
Here is a screen shot of what I am talking about. Do you see how there is a check box that says group conversation. This check box was available on the Verizon version of the Note 3 I had but not on the Sprint version. I tried to use the apk from the galaxy S5 but then I had a lot of errors with MMS in general and not being able to send pictures also no one can send or receive over wifi at all. If someone could please help.

No message blocking by phrases in the Message app

Hi,
I use Note8 and have recently upgraded to Note9.
In the Note8 there is an message blocking option in the Message app that can block message by either phone number or phrase (in message content).
In the Note9, this option is still there but now it has only blocking by phone number. There is no blocking by phrases anymore.
Do you guys have the same issue?
And I don't know why Samsung has omitted this useful option.

Really? That's the only reason why you got a Note 9? For that one feature (block by phrases)?

Hi,
Take a look at the screenshots, it's not like the same way now (with my Note 8 for example) but it's still there (at least for me)

It's still there on the my Note 9 as well, same place as the Note 8
There are many other message apps you can use. I've always used Next SMS, as my default message app. I just upgraded from a Note 4, to the Note 9, and my messages still work exactly the same way. It does many, many, many more cool things than the Samsung message App. I never knew there was a option to schedule a message to be sent, but thought it would be cool to compose a text and not have it go out at 2am as my son loves to do. It wakes me up. It also lets you filter an incoming text based on a keyword or phrase.
I love how you can have a different ringtone, theme, background, font size, message color, etc for each contact. The default message App doesn't do much at all. Just try different ones until you find one you like.
Yeah, i have the exact same problem. I live in Turkey. A spam message heaven. I started using "Mr. Number" app, looks simple and powerful.

Install and use Google's default messages app to block text messages with or without numbers. Then they are also blocked in Samsung's default message app
Here is the steps. Open sms app to access steps circled in photos....

This is blocking by number. The missing feature is blocking based phrase in the message.

How do you block contacts without numbers in Google's Messages app? When you go to Blacklist you can only add phone numbers, it does not let you select a contact

I do not have the message, I have the contact saved, the contact without a phone number, and I cannot add it. I suppose I have to wait for a message from this contact and then do the thing you mentioned. Before, in Hangouts, you could add the contact directly, no matter if it had a phone nr or not
Note 8, upgraded to android 9, the blocking by phrases option is missing too.
This is good feature as this advertisement ppl change numbers all the time and send you the same message.
Eg. Di you want to gamble?
If you block the phrase "gambke" all message with this word will be block.
Is there no way to flash the 4.4 Messages app from Oreo on a rooted device running Android 9?
If you go to block numbers option you can choose a contact or a message, but if the contact you are trying to add does not have a phone number it won't appear for selection. I've tested it!
But if still have the message on your inbox it might be possible to add it to the blacklist. This I haven't tested yet...
