Can I start/set up Nexus 7 LTE without a sim card? - Nexus 7 (2013) General

Hi,
I am in India and one of my friend is bringing me Nexus 7 LTE unlocked from USA.
He doesn't have a micro sim and neither do I.
Can we test/setup Nexus 7 without a SIM card?
Thanks.

Yes you can without problem, you skip the step about sim card
Currently I don't have a SIM card on my N7 LTE, and I regularly change roms

In the US (unsure about t-mobile outside US) you can get a t-mobile micro sim card, sometimes free or $0.99 but currently $10, and activate it for 200MB/month free data. Wonderful starter program and great for developers too.

Im sure the phone boots on the stock rom without a sim card. Wifi usually gives you better speeds than tmos hsdap for now.
If you really need a sim card you can always buy a cheap prepaid tmobile phone at walmart or wherever and take the prepaid sim from the phone and put in your mytouch 4g. All will be well, sir
Honestly, you don't need a sim card to mess around with the phone. You can access the stock rom without a sim card and use wifi for your data. If you want to be able to place calls or text, you can walk into a t mobile store and ask to setup a prepaid account. If they ask you what phone, just say you already have a GSM phone. That'll be about 20 bucks a month. If you have att as your carrier, then you can unlock the mytouch and stick your att sim card in it.
Sent from my HTC Glacier using XDA

Metro PCS uses CDMA phones so you wouldn't even be able to use it with that carrier.

Nexus 7 3G - SIM or Micro SIM?

Does anyone know, which sim-card slot will be in the new Nexus 7 3G?

Almost certain it will be mini-sim.
SIM is being phased out and will not exist soon, as there is now mini (one down from normal SIM) and Micro (one down from mini, basically just the gold within the sim)
So yeah, the middle one, mini sim, which is the same is iPhone/HOX/S3 etc etc.
Hello you two
It's actually a micro-Sim.
To use your tablet with mobile network data, you must first insert and activate a micro SIM card. If no card is installed, the message “No SIM card” appears on the tablet’s lock screen.

That's Micro SIM. The even smaller one you describe is a Nano SIM. And technically, the 'regular' SIMs we're used to are Mini SIM.
Full SIM was actually the size of a credit card (which is why we get SIM cards in a card like this -- The large one is actually usable in 'full' SIM devices).
Thanks, @ddlooping. I really thought, the Nexus 7 would have a normal Mini-SIM. Simply because it has enough room for larger SIMs
Good to know, that I will need two Micro-SIM cards (Nexus 7 3G + Nexus 4)...
You're welcome.
SO on the google blog, it says that the Nexus 7 3G will be available for purchase tomorrow. But there is no indication of that on the google play store like there is for the nexus 4. I also just called the google CS line, and they said that they don't have a solid release date yet
Humm, I was thinking of ordering this, but the carrier I use for my existing tablet does not have a micro SIM. Perhaps I should take it to one of the mall stores where they know how to do this stuff properly and have them cut it down for me.

Ordered mine from the UK Play Store a couple of hours ago.
I have the Nexus 7 32GB 3G right here and I'm furious because indeed, it requires a MICRO-SIM.
The slot is large enough for a regular mini-SIM but there is a plastic tray that you place your micro SIM into that artificially makes this slot smaller.
Without the tray there is 1mm missing for the width of a regular mini sizes SIM card.
FAIL!!!
Both Design Fail and Customer Communication Fail!

While it is true that Google could have communicated it better, had you sought out that answer you would have found it easily:

Nexus 7 3G - SIM Or Micro SIM
I ordered a Nexus 7 today and I am wondering if I can transfer the SIM card data from my current SIM card to a micro SIM card by just stopping in a T-Mobile store? Also, do they usually charge for that? I assume that adapters are available so I could use the micro SIM with an adapter in my legacy phone.
Also, if I insert a T-Mobile micro SIM will I get regular T-Mobile service on the Nexus 7 or does T-Mobile (US) somehow restrict tablets or charge more for that?
Also, do I understand correctly that a SIM card has to be in the Nexus 7 for it to work, even if I am trying to connect via wifi?

1,2) Not sure.
3) Your Nexus 7 will be blocked from the network if you try to insert a TMo phone SIM in the tablet.
4) No, the N7 works just fine without a SIM.

The Nexus 7 3g was bought as a gift for my brother and my experience is as follows:
The Nexus 7 3g from the play store is shipped with an AT&T sim.
Nopes. you don't need the sim in the nexus 7 for it to connect to Wi-fi.
As for the swapping - I have the T-mo micro-sim on my Note II and when I popped it with the Nexus 7, it read the Sim and all that, but did not transfer any data (probably because it is locked on to my Note II).
Just my two cents.

Sim Card

okay i just ordered my Nexus4 (16GB) , will the sim card be the same from the Galaxy nexus or would i have to pay T-Mobile a visit?
I'm in a similar situation, except I don't even have a Sim Card
Everything I've read about the Nexus 4, says it's a Micro Sim. So you have to cut it yourself, or go into a T-Mobile store. My questions is:
Can I go into a T-Mobile store with my Nexus 4 and buy a Micro-Sim? How much will it cost? And will they set up and activate my phone/plan in store? (Want to go with the $30 a month pre-paid plan).

Yeah, it's definitely a micro SIM. I'll be going to a T-Mobile store to get my SIM cut as well, and they usually do it for free.
They won't set up your prepaid plan in store, though. The $30/month plan is only available online, and you can't transfer your current number. Furthermore, you need an activation kit which includes the SIM card, or an activation number if you have an existing SIM card. Neither of those can be purchased from their retail stores, you'll need to call or go online. Link for the micro SIM activation kit.
Thanks. So if I buy an Activation kit on Amazon (can't post links) but: T-Mobile USA (Tmobile T Mobile) SIM Card and Prepaid Activation Kit
I just take the sim card into the store, and they cut it? Thanks for the heads up about them not selling the activation kit in stores. I was going to just walk into the store with my Nexus 4 and try to get it all done then. I should order my Sim card now, so I can have it in time for my Nexus 4.
EDIT: Can you go into a T-Mobile store, buy a regular Sim Card? Then have them cut it? Then just go online and set up the activation?
Or do you have to buy the activation kit to do it. According to their site:
Micro SIM Cards
Micro SIM cards for non-T-Mobile devices are available in our Retail stores and on My T-Mobile; however, microSIM cards cannot be ordered through Customer Care.
If a micro SIM card is purchased, keep in mind:
3G functionality on the T-Mobile network is unfortunately not an available feature of the Apple iPhone, due to the absence of the 3G 1700 band.
T-Mobile uses both the 1700 / 2100MHz frequencies to transmit voice and data services. Both frequencies are required. If a device only has one of these frequencies, it CANNOT use T-Mobile’s 3G network.

I called T-Mobile and ordered a micro sim. Cost was $1.06 shipped. Should be here today.
Look at the thread about micro Sims I am the accessories section.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1973646
For anyone else that is confused, I just went to T-Mobiles site and did their live chat. Took 3 min, and got everything sorted out. It's pretty easy (and I feel foolish for being confused, especially when you good folks gave a clear answer).
But basically, you just order the Microsim Activation Kit. And you are good to go. I really wish I would have done this a week ago in preparation for this. Google claims my Nexus 4 will be on the 15th. T-Mobile claims my Sim Card will be 15-19th (2-4days). I'll be really sad if it doesn't get here by the weekend. And I'm stuck without a phone until Monday.
That's my own fault though.

Micro SIM?? Will SIM Card from AT&T Galaxy Note work on Nexus 4?

I have been seeing alot of talk about people buying microsim cards for the Nexus 4. Forgive my ignorance, but will my current sim card in my Galaxy Note work in the Nexus 4?
From what I can see online, the Galaxy Note takes a regular SIM (technically called a Mini SIM, but referred to as just a SIM in most cases). If you go to an official AT&T store (not an authorized retailer) they will swap your SIM for free.

Need help with switching Sim card with Axon 7

Hi everyone I need a bit of help, right now I am with Straight Talk using a gsm sim. I have been looking around to buy an unlocked Axon 7 and was wondering if I buy one will I be able to just put my sim card that I have in my current phone in the new phone and will it transfer? I'm confused on how this works. Thank you
It should work providing the phone model has compatible bands and the APN details are set up properly.
According to GSM Arena the ASUS ZenPad Z8s uses a micro SIM-The A7 uses a nano SIM. So carefully cut your SIM card to size-or order a replacement. The A7 covers LTE band 17 the Zenpad doesn't so you may have better coverage with the A7.
You dont need to cut the SIM card to size. There are SIM adapters that you can put a nano SIM in that will convert it to a micro SIM. Normally you can just walk into your carrier store and request one of these, they are usually free. Or you can buy one online for a few $. Right now i have a nano SIM in my Galaxy Note 4 (a spare phone, Axon 7 is primary), it has micro SIM slot.
