verizon galaxy s5 on canadian network (rogers) - Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

i found a verizon galaxy s5 that's very reasonably priced. im just wondering if you experts out there can help me out.
the specs listed on verizon's website seems that the phone does match up the frequenceis which Rogers here in canada uses. however, this was also the case for european version of galaxy s5 and i was told that it will not work with the 4g network in Canada.
any input would be much appreciated!

bump! thanks for any input.

FWIW, my understanding is Rogers doesn't support something called fast dormancy (very long explanation short: if the phone is connected for data but idle, the connection is depreciated from 4G down to eventually 1X - this minimizes the phone's impact on the carrier and reduces battery demand; start to move data and the connection ramps back up again - all of this is done very quickly). The good news is there's an app to disable the phone's attempts to use fast dormancy. But... the phone must be rooted to use the app.
I ran into the fast dormancy issue in the Bahamas (Bahamas Telephone Co.). Using their SIM in a RAZR MAXX, the phone would basically become slower and slower until it locked up. Reboot and the process started all over again. Voice-only worked 100%. Cutting to the chase, the problem turned out to be fast dormancy isn't supported by BaTelCo. The fix for the RAZR MAXX was to root the phone and edit a system file called build.prop (there's an app for that - the needed code can be found with Google). In doing the research on this problem, Rogers came up as also not supporting fast dormancy. All of this happened two years ago, so things may have changed. I haven't been back to the Bahamas since then and I've never used Rogers. NTL, I'd take a serious run at getting the answer to this question. It may take some pushing but Rogers should produce the answer sooner or later.
Summarizing, AFAIK your VZW S5 should be just fine in Canada. My guess is fast dormancy is the key to why 4G may not work. And there is a work-around for that.
All of that said, please remember I do not have first-hand experience with my VZW S5 in Canada or anywhere but the US. I'll return to the Bahamas a few months and be in Germany in December; I expect to know much more then. But I doubt you want to wait that long for my first-hand report.

i think i undestood maybe 50% of that...LOL
So you're saying the s5 is a phone that supports fast dormancy, or the s5 specifically form verizon is a phone that supports dormancy, which therefore may affect how it performs on Rogers network?
Anyhow, im happy to report back here to let those who are interested to know that my verizon s5 is working fine on Rogers in Canada. I get 4G LTE (of course unless i'm in places where reception is crap, but that applies to any phone on any network) and voice is 100%!

If your S5 is working on Rogers without messing with fast dormancy, that's what counts. If there was a problem, you would know it.
AFAIK fast dormancy support is the default for the phone. I suppose a phone sold by Rogers would have fast dormancy disabled if Rogers didn't use fast dormancy. Since your phone came from outside of their system and it's working, there you are. [/grin]

I can confirm. My Verizon S5 phone is also working fine on Rogers network. 52Mbps down 18Mbps up when I checked. Has anyone tried the rogers stock rom on the Verizon?

[Q] your experience with at&t

Hello,
I'm in the process of deciding between the HTC Arrive on Sprint, and this phone, purchased unlocked and running on at&t. I plan on using it as my main phone, and for development.
I have been looking around for people's experiences with the Optimus 7 on at&t but haven't found much. I have never used an unlocked phone before, so I am not sure how easy the setup will be. Does 3G and MMS work for you? How will updates get installed?
I have been reading the posts on this forum, but I haven't read much about at&t yet.... I have no idea what I'm doing, haha.
Thank you very much for your help!
It works pretty well for me. The signal is a bit worse than with "native" AT&T devices because the radio ROM isn't customized for AT&T's network, but overall 3G/HSPA works well. I've never actually tried MMS, but I'm assuming if it doesn't work, you can use the MFG app to fix up your settings.
If you have an unlocked device, updates will come from Microsoft without having to be approved by AT&T, but you'll still get the AT&T exclusive apps in Marketplace because that functionality relies on your SIM card.
I still don't have NoDo, but apparently a lot of other people with this unlocked phone don't either, so that would probably be the main reason to go with the Arrive, as it comes with NoDo preinstalled.
Thank you Arktronic! Man, this makes my decision even harder now, I was just about to walk out the door and go to sprint. I really like having a physical keyboard and getting the phone *now* rather than having to wait a week for it to ship in. Haha, I have no patience...
Ahh man...
I'm still a bit worried about those updates....but I do plan on doing a ton of globe-trotting this year and next, and I don't want to pay for another phone to work overseas. Decisions!
Thanks again!
Keep in mind, only the LG E900H is optimized for North American networks. If you have an LG E900H (different from the more widely available E900), then you can simply go to the MFG app on the device, and set the network profile to AT&T, (with a couple of other changes, such as automatic WCDMA and ADC Enable, all of which can be done without any modifications, and very simple to do), and suddenly your device works like a native AT&T device. I have tried this on my LG E900H Telus branded Sim unlocked phone, and I tend to travel across the border a lot. If you have an AT&T sim in the phone, and you do all the above, you even get the AT&T splash screen...so completely AT&T-fied.
Man, I'm having a really hard time finding the E900h (what I can find costs >500 USD). Is that the phone that was given away to devs?
When you say 'optimized' you just mean that the setup is a bit easier? From what I understand, it seems like I should just be able to throw in an at&t sim and I should be good to go. Am I missing something?
I just want to make sure I can get 3G/MMS! (and not EDGE haha)
Thank you for your help!
I have a non-H and 3G works just fine.
E900H is available through Telus in Canada and I think some other carrier that starts with T in Mexico. And both versions will have the AT&T profile, and will work fine on AT&T.
Thanks a lot guys! I bit the bullet and just put in an order for it.... at 3am, haha. As much as I like the Arrive (and my Sprint service), I really fell in love with the Optimus 7 when I held a demo unit (that wasn't even working) when I was in Hong Kong. I hope this process goes smoothly... (and that we can get NoDo soon! Oh and I hope at&t service/reception doesn't suck as much as I'm afraid it will.
I've already written a crappy app, I can't wait to see how it works in the real world!
Cool, good luck!
Yeah I got it!!! Reception seems about on par with other at&t phones, perhaps a bit worse. Just installed the MFG app, set it up with the at&t_410_310 setting like it was mentioned elsewhere in this form, and bam it worked! I usually get decent reception on the HSPA network. Download speeds around 440k, which seems a bit slow? Dunno. Who cares! It's LEAGUES better than the crappy Samsung upstage i came from.
Don't forget to set ADC on using either the Network app from LG store, or through the MFG app in the Engineer Menu>Other Settings...
I think I tried messing with ADC while I was testing things out at the at&t tore, and the phone stopped receiving data (?), so I just left it on automatic, is that what you meant?
I'll check it out again tomorrow, right now the phone's updating to nodo as I get ready for sleep. I love this forum.
E900 or E900H
Hey edee1337,
You mentioned having a hard time finding the E900H, but never said which model you ultimately ended up getting. I wonder because it looks like you can get an unlocked E900 off of Amazon for around $360 (Seller:Yellow Deals) and I'm considering it for use with AT&T.
Which did you end up getting?
Thanks!
I used my sim-unlocked E900 both with Orange-FR and Open-EU ROMs in Canada for 2 months with a Fido SIM without any problem. With the Open-EU ROM I've noticed a more stable signal and MMS, but it worked quite well even with Orange ROM, only the MMS was missing that time, so I assume you can save a few bucks and stick to the E900 and set the AT&T profile on MFG App.
PS.: I am currently running my E900 on Brazilian "Oi" network without any problem too, just with the ADC turned on as there's no profile for any Brazilian carrier on MFG App, the same for Fido.
PS.: MMS works here too.
Thanks GolfVR6,
So when you look through provisioning options on your E900 you do actually see an AT&T one as well? If that's the case then I'm sure it'll be just fine.
Used to have until I flashed with the Open-EU firmware, but now when I try to access the Network Profile tool on MFG, the app quit and send me back to the Start Screen.
But I don't need to use this anymore as my ADC is working properly now.

Is Verizon S5 unlocked? Can it be used on T-Mobile?

Hey guys. Is the Verizon S5 CDMA + GSM?
Is it factory unlocked?
Can it be used on T-mobile with everything working correctly (LTE/4G)?
Thanks

I don't know the answer to your question but I can confirm that the Galaxy S5 that I received from TMobile was in fact LOCKED.
I called the support # and was told that I had to have service and use it for 40 days before it could be unlocked.
I PAID THE FULL PRICE ($720 with tax)!!!
I asked to speak with a supervisor -- after 10 minutes on hold -- no change.
I told the store that I was going to bring it back because I didn't pay $700 for a locked phone. Everyone has been nice but it's locked for policy issues and not for technical reasons. I flew to Canada when I bought my iPhone4.
And, AT&T is worse -- one guy told me 3 months and tech support said it had to be active for 6 months.
>> So, my AT&T sim card is not working in my SM-G900T model.
It is GSM/LTE unlocked (as are all Verizon LTE devices), but I'm pretty sure it doesn't have T-Mobile's LTE bands (or at the very least it doesn't have all of their bands).
From what I have been reading, on a Verizon phone, calls and data using GSM and WCDMA bands would work. But LTE bands are Verizon specific hence would not work.
Tl; Dr Voice /data using GSM/WCDMA. No LTE.

Does this mean, once unlocked, T-Mobile and AT&T versions would work on each other's networks including LTE?
I also noticed that with S5, there aren't GSM carrier specific versions. Meaning they are going IPhone route with making all GSM phones enabled that for that country's LTE bands. Is that right reading?

I am using the verizon s5 on tmobile. It is unlocked and can be used on tmobile LTE. However there are only set modes. LTE/CDMA GSM/UMTS AND GLOBAL. Which means you can't use lte and gsm at the same time (no lte data and voice calls). I usually keep it on gsm, and when I need speedy data I switch it to lte.

How? If you put a TMobile SIM in the phone, or any other foreign SIM, it boots but receives no service. This is in line with almost all other Verizon branded phones (excluding Apple) -- where the phone works (unlocked) outside the US, but won't roam to ATT/TMo in the US.
Pictures please. For the record, my S5 doesn't register on a network with a TMobile or Australian SIM. The Australian SIM in a Nexus 5 roams to TMobile.

This was probably true about a year ago but the recent releases from Verizon, e.g. iPhone 5/5s and galaxy s4 has been fully unlocked world phones. I'm sure there are a few other phones... I think lg g2? I'm not exactly sure. But I have personally stuck my sim(T-Mobile) into my friend's Verizon phones (s4 and iPhone 5s) and they work right away after a reboot. Only problem might be an edit in APN for data and mms. Just sharing my experience, you should check out your phones again.

Not trying to be a jerk, but unless you tried this process in the actual phone in question, then you don't really know if it works. The phone DOES NOT just magically work on TMobile if you put a SIM in, you receive NO service. Now, I didn't go mess around with APNs -- typically those are only for MMS/Data. This is also true for several other phones:
Razr HD / Maxx HD
Galaxy S3
In the past, when the phones were SIM locked, a foreign SIM would prompt for an unlock code before the phone even booted into "normal" Android. That's not the case here -- because the phone is not SIM locked -- but I do believe it is network locked to VZW only when in the US.
For the record, I did try this in my S5. I will be going to Australia next week and will try a Telstra (or perhaps Optus) SIM over there to see what happens.

Yes, I haven't tried it on the s5, but I was pointing out fact that it does work on recent releases which someone confirmed worked on s5 by just plugging it in. I'm also correcting your statement " This is in line with almost all other Verizon branded phones (excluding Apple) -- where the phone works (unlocked) outside the US, but won't roam to ATT/TMo in the US." because Verizon apple does work in the US on T-Mobile and AT&T beginning from iPhone 5. I believe the 4s was still carrier locked.
I was a wireless agent not to long ago, so I know how these things work, not that it magically just works... I'm just sharing you how some recent releases from Verizon has been world unlocked and a few others have mentioned that they just plugged it in and it worked. So good luck and have fun in Australia.

OK Thanks.
It is odd that the apple phones -- and some of the Android phones -- are totally unlocked so that you can use them on ATT/TMobile in the US -- but some (like the S5, apparently) are not. I still am interested to know how some of the other users in this thread got their S5s working on TMobile...
Why would anyone want to buy a Verizon GS5 and use it on T-Mobile? The bootloader is locked and there is currently no unlock method available.
Would you like to exchange?
Would you like to exchange your verizon s5 with my tmobile s5?
i wanted to use it for verizon but the phone is locked to tmobile and at&t.
It would be ideol if i can find someone to exchange it with someone who has a verizon s5 and is looking for tmobile or at&t s5.
thanks,

I can confirm the Verizon GS5 is compatible with T-Mobiles LTE network I'm using one now with LTE all you have to do is go to settings mobile network and switch to Global mode some times you'll have to toggle LTE then back to global to get LTE to kick in.
I am able to successfully use my VZ Galaxy Note 3 and my wife uses her VZ Galaxy S5, both devices on T-mobile Edge, HSPA, HSPA+ (21mbps), and LTE (band 4) frequencies. These devices unfortunately will not do DC-HSPA+ (42mbps), but that's not a big deal for us because LTE coverage is good where we live. We have no issues with making voice calls, or sending SMS/MMS, and don't have to switch APN's or toggle between Global Mode or GSM/UMTS mode. We leave them on Global Mode with the correct APN settings.
Here's the guide I followed for both (with correct APN settings screenshots to accommodate for MMS on page 4 or 5 i believe):

[Q] n900v in the uk non verizon customer

I know this has been discussed but I really would like a more defined answer if anyone can. I'm using a n900v variant in the uk with vodafone. I have data (h+) by manually adding the apn and using the global option (or lte option until signal drop then phone forces me back to global). Data is slow though and signal drops quite often. Could this be to do with different frequencies? I reckon as I'm not going to use any verizon service or cdma that I should be able to flash a n9005 rom but the general opinion is that this won't work. I don't understand why. I'm no expert but I'm pretty sure that both n9005 and n900v have the same components. Wouldn't it be possible with Odin or is it just that imei's and such don't match? It must be unlocked as I'm using vodafone and the guy I swapped with was with ee i think ( i didn't check the imei when we swapped and thought I was getting a n9005, my stupid fault I know ). I read that someone said they may use different nfc components but I'm not worried as I don't really use nfc. Other than nfc all components should match and it's definitely lte so surely I would be better off with a rom designed for my network. As a last point ( again ) I would prefer an unbranded version just to get rid of all the unusable bloatware that comes with Verizon phones. What say the good people of xda then?
Did some checking myself. Finally decided to switch off global roaming and switch to gsm/lte option. Data has speeded up and in fact the whole phone seems quicker. Not sure if it's a placebo effect but the global option was pointless as i wasn't using Verizon data anyway. Checked frequencies used by vodafone and n900v's capabilities. Phone has no problems with 800 mhz ( also known as 850 mhz ) used by vodafone. N900v has the same capabilities as the n9005 radiowise so I really cannot see why I couldn't flash n9005 firmware unless verizon have done something to stop it. I really want to flash lollipop but would rather wait for verizon to release it than run the risk of bricking. Has anyone tried it?

S7 International on AT&T carrier

Anyone using S7 International version on US AT&T carrier?
Care to report any issues? Drawbacks? Limitations, etc?
I'm curious about the this as well
If so, any issues, like with GPS? Also does Samsung pay work?
I don't get why Samsung has made this so complicated: some of us want t faster updates, custom roms etc and are willing to pay for it. And in this particular case a slightly faster more efficient variant.
I just got the 930f, and using it on cricket. So far, I see no drawbacks, but I haven't used it enough. Cricket was auto detected and APN settings already configured. The 930f from ebay was sealed, and no European sim needed.

LTE works fine, but this is missing band 30. But Band 30 is very new, and I believe it's mainly big city markets that use it.
^great thank you for the info
I got the international S7 Edge (935f) and I am using it on ATT.
The ebay sellers remove the region lock before shipping, which requires a 10 minute call in the originating country. I also had no issues when putting my ATT sim in and didn't have to change APN settings or anything, it all worked immediately. I get 4G LTE and speeds are typical for what I am used to. I could also use my phone as a wireless hotspot right away, which was very important to me, and something ATT does not allow without a separate plan. No band 30 as was mentioned, but I can live without that. Also, no samsung pay (for the time being), and no voice over LTE, which I never used before anyway. You're also on your own for warranty.
Not many disadvantages to taking the international over the carrier brand, and you will get a lower cost, bloat free, and rootable/fully customizable phone as an advantage. Very happy w/ my purchase.

Not many disadvantages to taking the international over the carrier brand, and you will get a lower cost, bloat free, and rootable/fully customizable phone as an advantage. Very happy w/ my purchase.

I'm curious if the Samsung Pay app is missing or if it's present and just unable to be configured due to the model number. Thanks! Also, I read someone complaining about GPS with their SM-G935F here in the US. Can't imagine why that would be, but have you had any issues in that area?
samsung pay is not even present. It needs to be baked in by the carrier.
As for GPS, it's perfectly fine. I used it earlier today and it locked in & got me where I needed to go without issue. I don't see why people would say GPS would be impacted by an international phone? GPS will be the same in all of these, and it will connect to the same satellites all the other carriers would use. This isn't like a car where it needs to have region-specific maps pre-loaded.
Does VoLTE work?

No
No but I am using an AT&T version G935A in Canada. Works flawlessly!
If I get the international model, will the phone auto update the APN settings on its own?

Isn't samsung pay downloadble from the play store now (and APKMirror)? I'm curious if it works once it's installed on the phone.

Thanks for that. Wasn't aware that they combine the Internet connection with the GPS in these phones, makes sense though.
Still, I speak from personal experience with the phone, GPS locks instantly and works great with Google maps. Haven't used it with any other 3rd party apps yet though. If others have had issues I'd like to hear their personal accounts.

Verizon compatibility

Will the Axon 7 work on Verizon's Network?
Eventually, Zte is still waiting for Verizon to give the green light. What I'm wondering is, even if Verizon hasn't given the green, would it work if I put my sim card in. The phone has all the bands.

Yeah. I was thinking about that. When the salesmen at Verizon saw my Nexus 6p they had no idea what it was and it has worked fine.
Would be nice if it worked on Veryzone and also had a BL unlock but some dreams are just never gonna happen
I hope I'm wrong so much

According to ZTE, the device has the correct antennas for CDMA usage (and FCC testing documents confirm that they tested CDMA usage). I asked an employee on the ZTE forums the clarify if it was enabled in both the hardware and software, but after watching the webinar that they posted on Youtube, they made it sound like it was disabled in the software. For now, it sounds like CDMA usage is disabled for all CDMA carriers until they get approval from Verizon and Sprint.
I'm anxious for CDMA compatibility, as this would make the A7 the first dual-SIM phone to fully support US CDMA carriers. (the OP3 only supports CDMA Band 0, missing Band 1 for whatever reason, and Sprint's Band 10)
I would be kind of surprised if the webinar were accurate as the specs on ZTE's Axon 7 sales site clearly show CDMA 0/1/10 support with no caveats. It would seem to be false advertising if these bands were disabled out of the box...but we'll see.
EvDO isn't mentioned but it's in the FCC filings and is kind of implied anyway.
Plus, Verizon is supposedly required to allow all band 13 devices on its network as a condition of their 750MHz license...so I'm pretty sure the Axon 7 will work even if not initially.
Agreed on the huge importance of the dual SIM/Verizon thing...that's a major step forward for people who want dual SIM CDMA (I count myself I that group!)

I emailed this guy for clarification and he confirmed his is working on Verizon and sent screen shots to show it...
I'm so close to ordering this phone. A lot of the places have a restocking once it is open. Just want to see if it works out of the box.
I see his phone states Verizon, but it says he is roaming. Can we get a pic with LTE or 4G on the display?
Thanks
Here is a screenshot showing mine on Verizon and LTE. Still shows as roaming though, but it's definitely LTE speed as you can see.

So it's fully functional on Verizon? Run into any snags with service?

Yeah so I just went out for a bit. It's really unstable I believe it must be because Verizon hasn't fully certified it to use on their network. The LTE will work for about an hour then it cuts off altogether and just shows roaming. Then if you reboot the LTE is back. I'll investigate some more but for now I'm not sure I'd recommend using it on Verizon. It works much nicer on T-Mobile and ATT
My oneplus 3 shows roaming on Verizon also, but it works fine. Im just not in love with it. So it's going back for the Axon 7.

. Just got mine today and has the same little r by the status bars. Hasn't affected service at all. Only thing is I can't access data while on a call. In Detroit area recorded 60mbps download. Crazy fast. Everything else works perfectly. Sweet phone purchased from Best Buy.

Simultaneous voice and data on Verizon requires VoLTE, which won't be added until Verizon approves it for their network.
Hi everybody - I've used a dual SIM adapter with my Nexus 5x and 6 with Verizon and I've found that the "Global" and/or "LTE/GSM/CDMA (PRL)" radio modes can cause problems with Verizon...the "LTE/CDMA auto (PRL)" is the only one that works properly...I ordered an Axon 7 myself so I'll definitely be experimenting too but just in case someone wants to open the testing menu (i.e., *#*#4636#*#* , "Phone Information") and try this out I figured I'd pass it on...I'm really hoping we can get VZW working perfectly on this device!
Sometimes the Preferred Network Type menu in settings also has this option (see screenshot).
On dual SIM phones I know from my OnePlus 2 experiences the testing menu can be finicky to get to work as I think it doesn't always apply to correct SIM (It seemed to always apply to SIM one on the OP2) so maybe this won't do any good but I figure it's worth trying?
Also, airplane mode may have to me toggled after switching modes to make this work...my Nexus 5X doesn't need this step to make things work but the Nexus 6 does.
I'm in Detroit area as well. I'll have mine in the morning as I'm picking it up from BB. I'll fiddle with the settings. I have both Verizon & T-mobile.

I leave my Motorola devices on "LTE/GSM/CDMA (PRL)" (E2 and G4, and although I don't have one, the Moto X Pure defaults to it) and I have no issues connecting with Verizon. Stick it my Verizon SIM and it auto-connects, stick in my T-Mobile SIM and it auto-connects, stick Verizon back in and it auto-connects. The dual-SIM adapter might be causing the issues, as I've tried using one before, but it would force my phone into "TD-SCDMA, GSM/WCDMA and LTE" mode and neither SIM would end up connecting, and forcing it to "LTE/GSM/CDMA (PRL)" didn't fix anything. Since the A7 is natively dual-SIM, it shouldn't have the same issues.
Also, it seems that only SIM1 is CDMA enabled, SIM2 is GSM/WCDMA/LTE only.

Yeah - agree totally...without the dual SIM adapter, "Global" works just fine on all my devices too...there's no doubt the adapter is the issue.
What made me think of the radio mode issue was the commenter above that said the phone is "unstable..." - that's exactly how I'd describe the behavior of the phone in "Global" mode with the dual SIM installed. It works for a little while then goes to No Service and sometimes shows the Roaming icon for a bit, which seems to be a somewhat similar behavior he was experiencing, though a bit quicker in its onset.
I think the real issue with Verizon is activation, right? If you have a SIM from another device you can pop it in and go, but if you need a new activation is when it gets sticky with Verizon. They give the whole, "it's not in our system" line...

People who have tested the phone with a pre-activated SIM are the ones reporting the issues. Some have been lucky enough to not have any or only minor issues. I'm wondering if it has to do with the bands or frequencies people may be on in different areas.
I really wish we could get a solid answer from either ZTE, Verizon, or the users. I would really like to get this phone but can't take the chance of buying an expensive paperweight.
