tethering caps and rooting - Networking

have had my z2 for a while now and have been contemplating rooting it the whole time. The main things that's put me off is that the Barclay's app will not work with a rooted device and that's probably the single most useful app I have ever used... However I've come across a new problem which is making me want/need to root more than ever before. My provider (three UK) used to have an amazing contract with unlimited data AND unlimited tethering / hotspot. Unfortunately when I upgraded to my z2, they failed to tell me that whilst I have unlimited data, my tethering is now limited to 2GB a month without even the opportunity to buy more if I need some.
What happens now if I have my laptop connected to my phone is that I will get a text from three every 5 minutes or so saying that I'm over my tethering limit and then when I try to go to w page on my laptop, it ends up with a three page saying that I'm out of data.
I've tried a root free app that was supposed to work but it ended up doing exactly the same thing, so three knew I was using My phone as a hotspot and stopped it.
With a rooted device can I tether without limits? Or will three know what's going on a stop me again?
Suppose I might as well ask this as well; Is there a way I could get the Barclay's app to think the phone isn't rooted so it will work again?
Cheers

T-mobile Blocking all forms of Tethering.

I was just using PDANet on my friend's laptop and I got two texts from T-Mobile saying the following: "Free T-Mobile Msg: Phone Tethering & Wi-Fi Sharing access has been blocked. Please add a Phone Tethering & Wi-Fi Sharing plan available at my.t-mobile.com"
Now I ignored it until the browser sent me to a signup page. I've tried WiFi Tether, Bluetooth, and Barnacle and it blocks each one. Anyone else get this?

using wireless tether right now... no problems...
maybe they'll end up sending me a text.
I don't have my laptop with me, so I can't test this myself. But if it's true, the Nexus One forums are about to A-SPLODE. You'll be able to hear it from space...

A-SPLODE!! Lmfao just made my day!
But yeah... if this is true then all I can do is throw the f-bomb around because I rely heavily on tethering and no way in hell am I going to pay for a service I've been using for free...
No problems with Wireless Tether on my G1...and I tether a ton. I was up to 7gb last month :/

Not just you.
That would suck. Would this apply to USB tethering as well, or just WiFi?
PDANet IS usb tethering.
:O
oh... and someone at the Vibrant forums is having the same issue... which is why I'm here.
:X
I am tethering from my G2 (USB tether) to post this message. It works fine, though TMO might be rolling this block out.
Edit: I am posting this via Wifi tether, so that seems to be working for me currently.
I just checked PDANet and WiFi hotspot and they both worked, so I guess they're "rolling" this out.
Makes me wonder...some of us never got the OTA rollout. I wonder if perhaps I'll never get this rollout either.
I think they can affect PDANet and Easytether since they are market apps. Wireless Tether for Android and Wired Tether for Android aren't market apps so im pretty sure those are beyond T-Mobile's grip.
Might have something to do with the G2 not being rooted and trying to tether. I think after its rooted it should work without a problem. At least thats what a tmo rep told me.
When I read all this on the xda app, i went ahead and hooked up to wifi tether. thats how i'm writing this msg. I am rooted and do have the largest plan tmo offers which includes the unlimited data. idk. we shall see. oh yea, no tmo msg as of yet.
I'm unrooted and used wifi tether this morning for 3 hours with no problems. I just don't understand how they can detect us using it.

There are various techniques they could use to do this; if we know exactly what they're doing, we can probably bypass it.
Probably one of the simplest techniques would be user agent sniffing; if they see desktop user agents from the same device, they'd know something funky was going on.
I'd be interested to know whether the OP can work around this situation by changing his user agent string on his desktop browser. I'd also be interested to know whether the phone browser continues to work properly even after he's been caught, and if so, whether changing the user agent string on the phone causes it to report the block message as well.
Another test for whether they're sniffing user agents is to try to make an ssl connection instead of http from the desktop browser. Assuming that the phone browser still works, SSL on the desktop browser should also still work, if all they're doing is user agent sniffing.
In an HD2 thread one guy was saying that he was downloaded a movie to his phone, but wasn't tethering when he got the text. Perhaps they're determining by the amount of data used in a specific amount of time. If that's the case it supports the theory of TMO seeing all data as data.

That's actually good, then. If they're using such a naive detection method, it's sure to result in a ton of false positives from people legitimately using a lot of data with their phones, and consumer complaints should result in them disabling it before too long.
If this works like any of T-Mobile's other services then they prorate the add-ons so you can add it when you need it, then cancel it when you don't and you would only pay a fraction of that $15. I do this with the hotspot feature all the time - enable it for a trip when I'll spend a lot of time in a hotel (or airports, etc.) where they offer wireless and then cancel it at the end of the trip and I pay less than a single day of wifi at a major hotel.
(disclosure - I snatched this post off the T-mobile.com forum but I was going to say the same thing!)
I need to confirm this "add it when you need it". Not good for everybody but for those of us that need tethering a few times a month it's not so bad, 50 cents for one day. Tried via the chat on T-Mobile.com to confirm this but they are useless!
When I first applied the OTA and started playing with the built in tethering, I noticed some log entries from DataConnectionTracker whenever I turned tethering on or off. When I enabled temp root with Visionary and tried using the stand alone Wireless and Wired tether for root apps, these entries did not appear.
I haven't had time to play with it much, but it might be useful to run logcat with a filter for only DataConnectionTracker activity while trying a variety of tethering techniques under root and non-root circumstances.
Of course the experience reported by the HD2 user does not line up with this theory, but there may be multiple things going on. If T-Mo really is blocking based on data volume, it will completely blow up on them as people start intentionally doing data intensive things without tethering.
I sure as hell hope they don't do this to the grandfathered plans... cause if they do, I'm gonna go on a *****-storm.
Edit: I'm tethering on the WiFi hotspot app and I didn't get any notice. Everything is as it has been since I've had this app. If not, I have Wireless Tether for Root Users. I refuse to pay $15 extra bucks a month when I paid for an unlimited plan a couple of years back.

AT&T Tethering Detection

I just got a warning letter from AT&T in the mail for tethering without a tethering plan and they are threatening to eliminate my unlimited plan. I am going to stop now that they have warned me so I don't loose the plan but does anyone know how they detect it. I tethered a lot last month but I have been tethering for about 6 months now undetected. Last month though, I used 2GB of data compared to the 1GB I normally use. Is it only the spike which made them guess. I use the android wifi tether app. I heard a couple ways of how they do it.
1) They look at the user agent.
2) They look at the TCP/IP header for the number of hops. (Tetherers will have an extra hop) -if this is true if I used wired tether it would be fine
3) Just the spike in data usage.
I'm curious to know how they do it and if there is a way to stop them from knowing. There is a lot of this for the iphone but not for androids. Anybody know more about this
I have used wired tether and they stilll detect it.... Time for you to invest in home broadband.
How were you contacted or notified that you were tethering from AT&T? I have done it a number of times using wireless AP and never heard a thing.

[Q] Best tether app for TMobile

So do any of you lovely gentlemen or ladies know a good app for tether with TMobile carrier?
I got a dealer plan (unlimited data, text, 2000 mins). Its suppose to have tethering but it does not. I asked my friend who use to work there (that is how I got the line) and he said that the tethering was on my plan as it is with every other dealer line. I wasnt sure at first since I was on an iPhone and he said since my iPhone wasnt a TMobile iPhone that was why the tethering wasnt working. I then switched to Android LG G2 not to long ago, TMobile official, and still doesnt let me tether. Official app and everything. I would tell him to check the account and fix it, but he doesnt work there anymore :crying: lol. I tried clockworkmod's tether and it works, but it only works for 10 mins at a time then i got to restart the app on my computer. I want to tether so I can use my data instead of my home internet since im always lagging when I play games or surfing the web by my siblings. Been going on for a while and this is my last resort. :|
So it will be greatly appreciated if I can find a good tether app that works all the time so I can use the internet again and play some League of Legends lol.
Thanks to those who try to help, they shall receive a thanks.

FOXFI fixed on latest OG5, none rooted Verizon Note4

Hi all,
After a long research and playing with different options, I finally found a way to make Foxfi work again on my Verizon Unlimitted data, none rooted, OG5 with latest update. I'm not gurantte that it will work for everyone because I only tested on my phone. So feel free to try out my method and if you blow up your device, it's your fault and your responsiblity. Once you able to bypass VZ lock down, you should able to connect normally WITHOUT have to go through all the steps. Enough said let try it out
1) Turn off your 4G, turn on your wifi.
2) Open foxfi and follow through until it failed by VZ message.."please call bahbahbah", hit cancel when you see the message
3)Switch to wifi and disconnect it from connecting to your router (open the connection then hit forget). Now your wifi is on but you shouldn't have internet
4)Close your Foxfi then reopen, then go through the process again, but at the end you will received a message that it unable to connect, hit cancel.
5) Now turn off your wifi and turn on your 4G, try to connect with foxfi and it should prompt you to enable hot spot in settings, launch settings and turn on hotspot. Bang, you should be sucess!!!
Once this is done, next time you just launch your foxfi the normal way, no need to go through these steps again.
Please provide feed back and good luck.
Well I heard that Foxfi is working again, don't know how/why?? but it's working, so no need to try anything. Thread closed.
How reliable is the paid version of FoxFi? I used it in the past on my S4 before I rooted it and it worked fine, but it was only the free version. Aside from the 500 meg-per-use limit, I had no problem. I tried it briefly a little earlier and it didn't work, but I might have missed a step. Almost forgot to mention, but after installing and running the app for the first time, a message appeared saying 'Network may be monitored'. Should I be worried about this? Thanks.

it is very reliable unless Verizon decided to screw us up. That message is normal you can safely ignore it.

Thanks. One other question, is there a way to FoxFi without having to be stuck with the system lock screen? I like to use Zui as my lock screen, and having to use the system one I have to sign into my phone twice. Is there a setting in Security I can disable or something?
Download this app, run it and it should remove foxfi lock screen. http://pdanet.co/help/RemoveLock.apk
After that you can set your own lock screen

Alright...dumb question...why would I use Fox-Fi as opposed to using the built in hot-spot feature? thanks in advance.

If you try to use the built-in mobile hotspot, it'll respond by telling you to either call Verizon or visit their site to enable that feature. With FoxFi, it allows you to use the mobile hotspot without having to pay extra for the convenience of it. You open the app, start it, then tap the button that redirects you to the mobile hotspot feature built into the phone. Basically, the app bypasses the need to enable the hotspot through your carrier. The full version is only $7.95 and you have about seven days, I think, to try it out. I'd recommend installing the 'Remove Lock' app mentioned in this thread should you choose to try FoxFi, since the app requires you to set either a password or pin lock due to it creating a VPN when first used. I've been using it for a while and it works as well as any rooted Android phone with the hotspot feature enabled. Hope this helps.

Simple answer, the build in hot-spot you have to pay for Verizon data service plan. With Foxfi you pay 7$ one time fee and use it forever...

Both replies are very helpful, thanks. I was a bit confused because I have never been charged for using my built in hot spot. With that said, I have not used it for extended periods of time, streaming, etc...

No, not at all. Nothing on my bill indicate useage...
Per VZW...
Here's the breakdown:
If you have a new Verizon "Share Everything" plan, you can use your phone's built-in mobile hotspot feature or a third-party tethering app free of charge? but you're limited to the data in your Share Everything data pool. Overage rates for shared data plans are $15 per gigabyte.
If you have an old usage-based data plan, you can now use a third-party tethering app free of charge. You can also use your phone's mobile hotspot feature for an additional $20 per month (per device), which also gets you an additional 2GB of data.
If you have an old unlimited plan, you are technically required to pay $20 per month for tethering? whether you're using a third-party app or your phone's mobile hotspot feature. However, Verizon has no way of knowing if you're using a third-party app to tether.

For the most part, it works without issues.
What I have discovered. Devices cant talk across it (as far as I can tell), and sometime it bugs out (every once in awhile). Overall works great.
The annoying part is damn icons in the top of your phone you cant get rid of. 2 for foxfi, 1 for hotspot.

Tether/Hotspot killed by OTA b33 and/or b34 Updates? [TMO, Unlocked, H2O]

Reached out on AF, but see some really model-specific discussion here, so thought I ought to ask here as well...
I grabbed my $45 Walmart Family Plan/T-Mobile ZMAX last year, and unlocked it for use on H2O.
All was well on 4.4.2. for a long time, but I did have some dropouts and 3G downspeeds at times, and thought the VOLTE and Band 12 upgrade might solve things. I didn't really need root, so just waited and considered the OTA updates.
Well, in a weak moment, I relented. As soon as completed, I found web browsing seems the same, if not a little slower, despite my seeing the 4GLTE icon more often than before, but real regret set in pretty soon after.
Now, it's stupid of me not to run it through it's paces after b33 to know if it was just this and not b34, but after both updates completed, I found I couldn't tether successfully, nor access the mobile hotspot anymore.
In both circumstances, my laptop connects, but declares no internet connection found despite the successful connection.
I've tried all the proposed setting changes mentioned in old threads despite their more being about the MetroPCS version than the T-Mobile one I have (adding dun to the APN, creating a new APN, putting it into Airplane mode before changing to either connection, etc, etc.)
As you can imagine, no success.
So, I'm desperate to know....
Has this specifically happened to anyone else?
Is there a way to recover this functionality?
Sadly, I kinda depend on this function as I have Carpel Tunnel, and using the laptop for extensive email is easier on my hands.
Thanks for any advice!
I have constant issues with what your describing and it all started with this throttling nonsense, and tmo MPcs, turning into data Nazis, on a crusade to put a limit on unlimited. Apparently the USB drivers for this device have deliberately left a few things out in order to restrict 3rd party usb tethering. The only avail USB tethering are the native tethering/hotspot options. Which once throttled start giving me network grief, usually after about an hour or so and using my phone to surf (while still tethered) that no internet exclamation disappears and I can start laptopping, not always though. Only tried and true guarantee for me is using Easy Tether Pro to emulate USB over Bluetooth which even not throttled maxes out at < 3mbps sucks but good enough for XBMC and Netflix. Foxfi has the same feature but uses the Dun protocol which doesn't work for me problems with improper installation most likely, I use pdanet foxfi for my wireless hotspot data.
Sucks just a few months ago I was averaging 275gb a month at > 50mbps with my rooted s4, now I'm lucky to break 50gb at a snail's pace
