I have a relatively new (refurbished) nexus 7 (2012) that got a sudden fault of not turning on at all.
When plugged in I get the normal charging icons (central screen) as when the tablet is off.
Unplugged it does nothing with any button press: power, power + all combination of volume buttons.
Pledged in it does something only with power button - backlight turns on with dark background and flickering stripes of static.
Plugging into pc shows nothing.
It's been sent if for repair and they said the battery was ploughed in backwards! And they've swapped it around.
I don't get how it worked for a month if it was the wrong way around in the first place.
Sent back to me this week with no change!!
Suggestions of ways to resolve it my self?

You can open the back plate of the Nexus 7 yourself. It comes off fairly easily. You can then see if the charging port is clear of debris, if it might be slightly bent out of shape, or if somehow the battery is connected backwards... LOL. That seems highly unlikely to me.
What you are describing sounds more like sleep of death, or what happens when you drain the n7 battery completely. Something is wonky with the firmware and it "forgets" how to charge when the battery is too low. Doing this off the top of my head but I think what you are supposed to do is;
1 - plug in charger, which starts the charging animation.
2 - hold power+volume up+volume down to boot into the bootloader
3 - using the volume buttons to scroll, select reboot (or recovery)
4 - quickly unplug then plug back in the charging cable. Timing is key.
There is a thread in the Q&A forums with other methods if I didn't write that down right, or it if doesn't work.
Problem solved!
I popped open the back cover to find the connection from the battery to the main board nut fitting tightly all the way in (only by about 5mm). Pushed it in and secured it.

My N7 did the OTA 4.4 update without a hitch and performed without issue afterwards. Finally having some spare time today, I decided to root it. I've been rooting the device since I bought it so this was not going to be a new exercise for me. I went to:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2531000
and downloaded the zip and copied it to Internal Storage. I tried to reboot into Recovery but managed to drop myself into the bootloader. Instead of powering off I selected Recovery Mode and after a few seconds the screen changed to the green android robot lying on its back with its front hatch open, a triangle with an exclamation mark inside it and the text "missing command". Figuring that I'd blundered into a dead end analagous to a BSOD on a desktop, I tried to power off the tablet but it wouldn't respond to the power button. I popped off the cover and unplugged the battery.
I let it sit unplugged for a short while and then reconnected it. Now the tablet does not respond to the power button. I can't turn it on.
I've been Googling this but all I've found is posts meant for people with charging issues. My tablet did have that issue but I fixed it long ago and it never returned. I've been trying the methods in those various posts just to see if they might work. So far, no joy. The battery was at 60% when this happened.
The tablet has performed beautifully until now. I'm having great trouble believing that the error plus unplugging the battery has bricked it. I've plugged it into the charger and plan to keep trying the various starting methods. Any suggestions or insights into what has happened would be appreciated.
[edit] The charging animation does not appear after plugging in the tablet. I've checked and re-checked the battery connector and it is completely inserted and snug.
[edit 2] I connected the tablet to my desktop to see what happened. Normally when I do this with the tablet off it just charges and nothing else happens. This time, the pc spent some time thinking before giving an error chime and the following messages. I hope it provides an important clue...

The problem is resolved. I'm not sure why, but here's what happened.
I managed to borrow another 2012 Nexus 7 from a co-worker. On a whim, I removed their battery and connected it to my N7. The tablet started up normally. I then connected my battery to their N7. It, too, started normally. I restored my battery to my unit and pressed the power button. It started normally.
I have no idea why the tablet is working now but I'm grateful that it is. The lesson that might be drawn from this is to not be hesitant to swap components in a malfunctioning tablet, even if you don't envision the swap as being relevent or productive. In my case, it seems to have given the tablet the kick in the pants that it needed to get moving again. :good:
Just got a new battery because the old one died. Had the phone for around 4-5 months now after upgrading from the s3 that did the exact same thing. The phone is stock no custom Roms or root. It just dies, turns off. When turning the phone on it makes it to the galaxy logo and then powers off. I cannot make it to recovery mode and charging it does nothing. Plugging it in with no battery does not power the phone on either. Please help me figure this out.

Get your charging port checked. Maybe the way you put phones in your pocket or somewhere makes it go bad.
Things like this happen once, not twice brother.
Clean your charger and your charging port. Try connecting to a pc and see if it starts charging.
Or maybe your charger went bad.
Do press thanks if my posts are helpful

I can't get into recovery or download. When the splash screen comes up the phone turns back off... If it even makes it that far. This happened with the s3 as well and i looked it up on google as being "sudden death syndrome". The charger and port are fine, the phone is brand new.
Hold power
1-2 seconds goes by
See Samsung Galaxy screen
phone turns off
When its being charged it says 100% complete and then when i took out the charger it would instantly drop to 90%. After that if i sent a text or any message it would drop another 1% and this was the same deal with the s3 that died and would never turn back on. The phone is literally brand new and i just replaced the battery less than a week ago with a new one. The battery is just not holding charge but its brand new but the same thing happens plugged into USB with the charge cord and no battery

bump i need help this is the second phone thats done this same thing
Hi guys
today morning my phone suddenly turned itself off. Meaning that it did not properly shut down but the screen just went black. I had it plugged into my laptop at that point and the laptop registered it disconnecting at the same time it went off.
Ever since then it has been in a comateous state and nothing works when I try to turn it back on.
I tried booting in Recovery/Download mode, with and without the cable plugged in. Did not work
When I connect it to the computer or a charger it now gets incredibly warm/hot. You can still touch it but you can tell it's far hotter than it should be (or ever was in my case).
I have now removed the back cover and disconnected the battery. After that I pushed the power button for a few seconds and re-connected the battery, still dead.
While it was still open, I connected it to my charger and figured out the area which gets hot is this one:

Any idea why this could be or what could have happened to my beloved phone? :crying:
I had its display replaced a month back at some 3rd party repair service but it has been working fine since then. I fear it is related to that.
Thank you very much for any input or help!
It was running Cloudy G3 2.0 and Dorimanx Kernel with stock settings.

Same here bud. Just happened to me about an hour ago on my VS980 (JPC's CM11).
Sorry if this is in the wrong place,
XDA has helped me out many times in the past, I've searched but found no concrete answers with this though:
I'm a truck driver and often charge my N4 on the go, probably doesn't help the battery, which for the last few months has begun to discharge in around 6 hours. I nearly bought a new battery but put it off then the phone died.
I plugged it into a in car (truck) charger on the 12v socket whilst at 5% and the charger started smoking. Pulled it out and found the phone was off and unresponsive (no surprise) with no red LEDs or otherwise.
Each time I did the following i also tried the volume down and power key or volume up and power key combinations with and without the charging cable plugged in and whilst holding down the buttons as well:
I plugged it in at home from a mains charger, nothing, overnight, nothing.
Also tried from the computer USB port, still nothing.
Bought a new battery, no change.
Bought a wireless charger in case the USB port fried: seemed to get warm but that could be the charger induction coils. Still no power on.
"Charged" the new battery externally with a spliced USB cable, nothing
"Charged" the new battery externally with a power supply at 0.5 ah and battery voltage went from 3.45 to 3.70 still no power on.
Repeated the above at 2.0 ah and put the battery voltage up to a maximum 4.5v for 10 mins - this time the backlight came on and would stay on until long press of the power button.
Then the phone got REALLY hot. I mean to the point of "something feels like its about to thermal runaway" hot. Pulled the battery and eventually it cooled down. If I plug the battery in now it gets hot on the WiFi/Bluetooth module first then spreads out over the board. As the power management chip is on the other side of the board to the WiFi module my question is: has this phone gone to hell? Is the chip overheating because its now fried or because its not getting the right power? Am I completely stupid and should get a phone that I can look after (Nokia 3210 anyone?!)
I had a N4 before this that packed up on me and I think the PMIC may have been the problem as well, only ever seen one post about it though that went unanswered.
Thanks for any suggestions, not trying to waste anyone's time or space.
Peace
UPDATE:
I'm also trying to resurrect an older N4 that had RLOD but when I tried to replace the battery I prised the battery connector off the pcb...ye. Should stick to not touching anything and not moving from one place. I soldered a pair of leads on to the contacts this evening to see if I get anything from it and I got a solid red led so thought I'd hook up more jumpers to the battery and go from there, in so doing I ripped the track off the pcb...no pad left to solder too and I cant find where the track runs to patch into it anywhere else. So I took the pcb off the phone I first posted to see what's underneath, and look what I found:

And also:
Judging by how much black blood these chips have bled and the exit wound on the PMIC I think its fair to say I have two useless unrecoverable phones, no hope of data recovery via JTAG and no working phone either. Hope this helps someone looking to see why their phone gets so hot and won't turn on!
There is the problem in the Asus Zenfone 5 a501cg:
1. On charging, it displays RED Rectangle block rather showing the Battery Icon in OFF mode and keeps the screen ON when switch OFF the charging on Red block. Long press OFF button turns off the Mobile.
Also, it doesn't show any LED indicator(orange) when showing RED Block.
2. When Switched ON from OFF state, it doesn't boot up. Rather it showing Red Block and hangs there. Long press OFF button turns off the Mobile.
Also, it doesn't boot up in Recovery mode by either pressing Volume Up + Power nor in Volume Down + power.
It was working fine before. I just removed the sim cards and after that it doesn't booting up.
Is it battery Dead indicator or what?

Dont worry, just let your phone charge.
The Red box indicator is due to low battery and hence you cant access Fastboot or Recovery.
Thank Me later.
i charged it for several hours...not boot up..i have now ordered new battery from ebay.

I didnt realise dat u had a screenshot attached, Sorry.
I've never seen anything as such i would recommend dat you visit a service center before fiddling it yourself.
