I just picked up an s4 from att today. Ive been playing with it for about an hour and I definitely want to root the phone and remove all of the bloatware. Ive read online that there is no way to fully remove all traces of rooting this phone when needed for warranty reasons. Ive also read that att will still honor the warranty even if the phone is rooted. Does anyone have any info on this? Im experiencing a little lag here and there with the phone and am honestly not as jazzed about it as I thought I would be. If I root the phone will I still be able to switch for another phone if I choose to within 14 days and will att honor my warranty if I keep the phone and something goes wrong with it? Im in the US.
Well I had the s4 from release day,and have both root and a custom ROM.a couple weeks ago my WiFi decided it didn't wanna live no more so I flashed stock ROM through Odin and WiFi was still not working so I took my phone into the warranty center he flashed stock ROM again and it still didn't work so he just swapped it out for a new phone right there....
Long story short just unroot and flash stock ROM and you should be good to go

That can only be done if the phone hasn't been updated to mf3. There is no flashable firmware for that one.

Yes forgot to mention that .also for anybody with mf3 firmware try to get a warranty exchange if you don't mind getting back a refurbished device and there's a possibility you will get a non mf3 phone

I asked ATT customer service if rooting voided the warranty. I was told rooting does not void the warranty unless rooting caused the damage. The example the rep gave me was: If you root and phone overheats as a result of rooting, then they wouldn't cover that.

Thanks for all of the replies! They're very helpful. How can I tell if my s4 has the mf3 firmware and what exactly is the difference between mf3 and the other?
Just wanted to add that the last three digits for my baseband are mdl so im assuming I dont have the mf3 software as of yet. I have a software update available. Should I update or just root the phone as it is now?

If you want to be able to root AND flash ROMs, do not update to MF3. There is no method for loading a custom recovery for phones that have updated to MF3.
There is a thread in the General section about rooting an MF3 phone, but at this point you won't be able to flash a ROM.

I use Xposed framework, I don't see that being the issue and how it could cause a hardware failure. I have heard this issue before when tons of people had their S3 died suddenly, there is a big thread of it in its forum.
You'll probably want to wait for the Nexus 5.

Well it would be better if you have a backup phone. It will be based on the LG G2 and gsmarena.com even post is specs, but until it's officially announced by Google it's all speculation.
You could use get the G2, but since it's not the nexus you won't get the same software experience and developer support, price is a big deal as well. Also rumor is the Nexus 5 will support all LTE bands, but that's to be seen.

So this happened to my phone. Brought it to a repair shop and said the EMMC was dead.
Long story short, credit card company refunded the purchase price, I bought a Nexus 5, but I still kept the dead Nexus 4.
Is it possible to buy a replacement part/motherboard to replace this, or is it completely shot (fine with that)?
If it is dead, I was going to recycle it or offer it up for parts. With an EMMC brick, is there anyway to recover any of my personal information that was on the phone?
Thanks!
You'd have to get a new motherboard. Check eBay. No way to get your info off out that I know.
Out of curiosity, what were your symptoms of the phone?. Did you ever try to lock the bootloader and it wouldn't lock?

Motherboard ~$100. Might give it try. The teardown instructions dont' seem too daunting. Do I have to worry about this IMEI stuff?
As for symptoms. I was completely stock, and locked bootloader. I was doing something and then it froze on me.
Went to reboot, and it was stuck on the boot animation (merging dots).
Ended up trying a tool kit to flash the phone. It worked, got back into the system and as it was downloading apps, it froze again.
This time, when I went to reflash, it would error would error with a "failure to write to flash".

Well i was trying to to flash a new rom on my D802 and accidentaly i deleted everything... a full wipe from phone menu ( not recovery )
Since there was absolutely nothing on the hard drive anymore ( i assume) Phils TWM coudnt find any folders .. i had to push roms to the phone through adb now the problem is that no matter what rom i install i get no connectivity/no service .. cant recieve any calls or use data... only wifi...
I tried re flashing...
Stock rom
Paranoid rom
G flex rom
Stock kernal and peak 5.2 kernal
Nothing has worked? How do i restore connectivity to my phone? Thanks

Honestly, you'd need some one to send you their EFS backup (who's on the same carrier and model). Then you'd need to extract it. Then edit it to replace their data with yours.
But I don't think your going to find anyone willing to do that. As it's a HUGE risk to them. So I think your only bet it to to a warranty or repair 'call' with lg if not your carrier.

So is my phone a expensive paper weight or what now?
Warranty service?
Yeah, if you wipe your EFS, flashing back to stock wont help. The EFS partition contains files individual to each device, you will probably have to return it for repair man D:
I've had the same problem too, my SIM card doesn't seem to be reading on my phone either; and it definitely a functional sim.

I'm sorry, xda mail somehow has been going to my spam folder.
Anyway I am not familiar with this issue, but perhaps you can restore your stock rom via flashtool, then call LG and tell them that you don't know why this happened Oh and modems are distinct from EFS I think (at least that's my understanding)
Your main problem will be the shipping though
I found this thread for the lg optimus G though - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2161498. Perhaps try PM-ing autoprime?
Same Problem
I also am in this EXACT same position. Still havent found a resolution quite yet. I am in correspondence with Shellnut the guy who actually wrote the freegee app that uses loki to flash cwm and twrp. He said that only cdma phones need efs, that the gsm phones didnt need it. This was new information to me. I haven't heard back from him quite yet as he informed me my phone wasnt bricked and that they would help me get back up and running. I know he is extremely busy. I have also been hearing that you can possibly use lg qpst to manually write your imei, looking into this now.
I would love to not have to take the risk of sending it in. Would love to just fix it.
i'm in the exact same position right now. Hunting the threads for a fix. I will be going back to Hong kong in 2 weeks time for 2 days, not sure if thats sufficient time for LG to get it fixed.
Hopefully we can find a solution soon!

Problems with 3UK model of the xperia arc s just would not be rooted - regardless of the method used. from what ive read (here and elsewhere), this was common when the os was updated to the latest version, which mine was. I wasnt interested in downgrading the rom to root, so i was stuck on that one.
Im not fully settled on rooting the g2 though, to be honest i havent had a need for it as yet, a lot of the common bloatware can be disabled so.....not sure, but maybe if theres no issues with the 3UK model i might try...

This http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2448887 and if you have any issues, just flash the Open firmware and root :good:
I recently accepted the D80120G OTA form T Mobile while rooted on stock recovery and naturally root broke. I couldn't reroot with stump root because the root script was still on the phone. Stump root said device was already rooted. I tried to install KDZ file to "unroot", but could not get phone to boot into download mode.
The following is a fix for rerooting your phone with stump root if it says your device is already rooted even though your root is broken.
1) Launch LG Mobile support tool
2) With phone on, plug in USB
3) Select PC Software from phone USB settings
4) Wait for LG support tool to recognize phone
5) Select "Upgrade Recovery" from options in LG support tool
6) Wait for LG Support tool to complete recovery
You shouldn't need to back up anything as it will not wipe your phone. However, better safe than sorry.
Now stump root should work with brute force method!
This worked for me! Thanks so much for the post!
