[TUT]New way to get root! (4.4.2 and below) - Xperia Z General

Well, if anyone's been following the front page recently, Geohot was able to create an apk that would root our phones that is running Kernels before June 3. Tested it myself and figured it's the easiest way to root if you're on Kitkat. This should work on most phones, if not all.
Source: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2783157
APK Download: towelroot.com
1. Download towel root apk from towelroot.com.
2. Run towel root and let it install the SU binary and reboot your phone. (With the latest update, You don't need to reboot your phone to be rooted)
3. Download and install Super SU apk version 2.0 from playstore or here.
4. Run super SU and let it update its binary by normal method (no recovery needed if super SU version is 2.0+).
[Optional]:
5. Reboot and run Super SU yet again and go to settings to move Super SU into /system as a system apk.
6. Reboot to get full root as system app.
7. Install recovery and busybox (busybox should not be installed in case of using [nut]'s dual recovery).
Steps provided by Cookie Ninja. (Modified a bit by me)
RECOVERY: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2261606
and that's pretty much it. Installed recovery, Updated my Binary through TWRP and I'm all set. (You can update it through the normal method now. It's fixed!)
I've tested this on my Xperia Z (C6603) Locked Bootloader running 4.4.2 Stock Kitkat 10.5.A.0.230
Confirmed Working for LB 4.4.2 and 4.3.
If you're looking to root 4.4.4, please follow this guide by KingVortex

Not tried yet, but if it works ( and i think so) geohot is a genius. Again.

Interesting indeed. Wonder how pinkie pie found that one
In case anyone is interested is using a very similar to exploit to rage Against the cage.. An old exploit
http://thesnkchrmr.wordpress.com/2011/03/24/rageagainstthecage/
This will trigger most anti viruses, can't see anything else in there that's dodgy, but it's just the brute force attack ratc that triggers them.

Thanks for that

Yeah. It works. You need only install SuperSu.apk v1.99 because this from market play cant actuall binaries.

Is this method safe, i mean, that if i unroot, i won't have problems with warranty?

This also works on T-Mobiles Xperia Z C6606 running 4.3 (Build 10.4.C.0.814) At least it did for me...:good:

It works on stock 4.3 -.101! It can't be....

Which is why you either install the APK I linked in the 1st post or you install recovery and update through that.

Hey calm down, there wouldn't be a ftf if I hadn't created it. If it doesn't work with Tapatalk, use something normal like Firefox. No-one is asking you to use the file I have created.

Cheers TheCraig, I really am just trying to help and get involved more. I have used the files here previously, just wanted to give something back. Wanted to try and get the EE branded 257 firmware too but I couldn't get it to download on it's own, only OTA and as far as I know you cannot create a FTF from an OTA download.
Don't worry. Some of us understand you are just trying to help.

I'm in the UK and I have an Unbranded Xperia Z1 C6903 which was bought separately (bought it sim free, not from EE), but my mobile plan provider is EE.
Would this be the correct FTF to flash to my phone or do I need to wait for an unbranded one?
Thanks!
Try it and see

You can use any UK C6903 FTF. For instance, I have an unbranded Z1 running on the O2 network, but have installed the vodafone FTF and it's running fine.
There is some vodafone bloatware included which are uninstallable without root, but heyho, everything is running smooth and dandy.
If you don't like it, you can always reflash.
Has anyone tried to disable exchange PIN requirements on the new 4.3 ?
I've traditionally used this : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1117452
and hope it still works with this new updated mail app. else I'll be going back to 4.2.2

No go at the minute. You can patch the files but there's no way of getting them to system/app without root (which you currently can't (easily) do at the minute)

Hey mate,
just wanted to let you know that I did it.
Used SEUS to flash to latest stock FW.
Then unlocked bootloader, and flashed CWM using this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2588331
Then flashed the latest SuperSU via CWM, and successfully obtained root.
Then I used the v3.4 of the exchange patch here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1117452
voila. 4.3, rooted, CWM, and with exchange security overridden.

Locked bootloader for me unfortunately...

unroot.

Hi.
I installed the 257 rooted version on my z1, but no OTA update is possible with this root installed. Only the nut rom is prerooted, and even there no OTA updates possible, so i decided to renounce to root, and wanted to unroot. I made it via supersu app, but even then the OTA update doesn't work.
So do i have to reinstall a fresh unrooted 537 version, and then make all the update up? Or is there a way i can make OTA update from where i am now, whitout heaving to reinstall all the phone?
Many thanks.
Just flash any generic ftf and the root is gone. You can use PC companion for this. Check the repair option though.

I believe OTA should work with root... are you sure it won't? That was how many users were retaining root while updating.

Ota only works with update from 537 to 257, it dosn't work from 257 to 290. Because (as i heard) sony inserted a root protection. So the only way to have root in 290 is using the nut rom from here.
But i don't want root anymoore, and i don't want to reinstall my cell.
Try downloading an FTF and unticking data wipe in flashtool. This should work and it shouldn't remove any of your apps.
Backup your contacts somewhere though

[Q] Upgrading to 5.0

Hello guys,
i got a d802 , the european version from germany,
i rooted it to get access to some apps and ive been told that you cant update the phone(with the original update) if its rooted.
can i update through the phone although it is rooted ?
if so, did the update release yet ?
in addition, does it contain all the languages incl. hebrew ?
thank you so much
edit: plz move it if it doesnt belong here.ty.
if you are rooted , you cannot receive OTA updates . So far there's no ETA from lg for our lg g2 ,and at the moment only korean version got official lollipop . We are waiting too ,on european version ,hope by the end of january.

You're right and you're wrong, because:
For model f320L (I'm not sure about another model), even my phone are rooted I can still receive OTA updates (if i keep the stock recovery). But for model f180 (Optimus G), it is impossible

Right now, when I check "Software update", a toast notification appears >> "Communication in progress..."
Root =custom recovery = no OTA. Simply as that. So if Lollipop appears, and you prefer OTA way of update- the only one solution is to use pure stock.

Rooted device doesn't mean it has custom recovery.
So if you don't have custom recovery you would be fine to upgrade.

Correct. I mean in general. Usually root goes in pair with custom recovery. So if you have root and want OTA remember not to touch recovery and of course don't delete any system app.

If there is an OTA 5.0 update on the G2 devices, then I am very disappointed.
Normally, on any other subroom, soon as Sammy or Sony or HTC releases their "update" (or source code), xda dev. instantly jump on it right away, and rooted/custom recovery users will have a chance to run the latest update BEFORE ones that waiting for phone providers such AT&T/Verizon to push OTA update.

I dont have custom recovery, can i upgrade with the ota with no problem ?
So i have a custom recovery and i was wondering if it would brick my phone if i flash 5.0 with KDZ when it comes out. I had an lg phone before it worked no problems but i just want to know if its the same with lg g2.

On my d802 all updates I can't do on OTA only in download mode, yes I have root and stock recovery and every time I apply an update root is gone I don't know why but is fine for me. I hope on 5.0 I can update on download mode ?

rooted or not

OK I so I tried rooting my device with odin I have a galaxy s7 edge SM-G935T and everything went great it said passed, I used root.bat, everything It installed supersu for me and everything but when I went to root checker this showed up (look at screen shot) I have another picture also of my device saying my phone is rooted (look at picture)

I just go to official Magisk topic and download Latest Magisk (version 12.0), flash it through TWRP (i'm using 3.1.0-0) and when the phone is on go too Magisk Manager at Play Store and install it.
After going through that, it just works... :silly:

I have read recently that CTC verification now fails due to unlocked bootloader, as well as it's other detections like root.
I read on the Netflix/root thread on XDA (sorry don't have link. It was on main page this past weekend) where several people mentioned that.
I'm trying to find out if relocking bootloader , can I keep twrp and root (magiask) ?

On stock rom root cannot be hide.
I tried magisk and supersu+suhide.
You can flash the newest Resurrection Remix.
Su hide and cts are OK.
