O.K guys...
This is quite simple
Download generic 534 (I used for central Europe)
DOWNLOAD FTF
Flash it via Flashtool and root with Kingo or root this way :
tnx @schickel
This method works great. If you don't trust these tools(Kingo root), use Root MANY ANDROID from Bin4ry. I've used this tool without any problems on the downgraded firmware.

Then boot ROM (you will need to restart your device two times to root proper) and you'll get OTA warning you have 257 firmware ready for update.
Download update and let the device flash the update.
And that's it
Now you have newest firmware and you root is here as well...
See ya

That's the point of this thread.
You'll get OTA if you use generic or world FTF.
That's why I said - first flash central Europe (for EU countries) and you'll get OTA info about 257 firmware.
I couldn't update by OTA too, then I did all this and now I can use OTA.
I was receiving OTA info but couldn't update - so I know not everyone can update that way.

Yes I agree with you. But some will want to stay with region specific or branded firmware. There are other methods for them, this is good for those people who will want to flash to central Europe first.
I good find and thanks for confirming OTA keeps root.
I agree, of course

What for other methods do we have without unlocking bootloader and flashing other ftf?

So will this require wiping or can I install generic ROM over branded ROM?
EDIT: ROOT IS STILL HERE! WOOHOO!!!
OTA on phone preserves root, no matter which .534 firmware u have.
If u update from phone it preserves root
Make sure to switch to SuperSU app before u update, from any other superuser, works best

I didn't force it. I was running the .534 DK firmware and the update notification has always been there through the sony software update app. I chose the DK firmware over the hong kong firmware because I didin't like the NFC logo always on there and I'd rather my phone say 4G instead of LTE.
You may have to wait for the OTA! Not sure if there is a way to force it on the phone unless someone gets the update.zip after they download it and you flash it in stock recovery? not sure as I've never entered stock recovery yet. my BL still locked.
Damn it I want a nexus 5... but I'm afraid I'll get drunk or something and accidentally wash it like i do the Z1 all the time

Same here. I just tried the OTA update and got the update failed after the reboot.
EDIT:
Maybe because I rooted with using Vroot. From what I've read, people had success using Kingo root. I tried the update 4x so far after Vroot. I'll edit this post again after rooting using Kingo root and see if the update will go through or not.

I'm in the UK and I have an Unbranded Xperia Z1 C6903 which was bought separately (bought it sim free, not from EE), but my mobile plan provider is EE.
Would this be the correct FTF to flash to my phone or do I need to wait for an unbranded one?
Thanks!

You can use any UK C6903 FTF. For instance, I have an unbranded Z1 running on the O2 network, but have installed the vodafone FTF and it's running fine.
There is some vodafone bloatware included which are uninstallable without root, but heyho, everything is running smooth and dandy.
If you don't like it, you can always reflash.

Hey mate,
just wanted to let you know that I did it.
Used SEUS to flash to latest stock FW.
Then unlocked bootloader, and flashed CWM using this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2588331
Then flashed the latest SuperSU via CWM, and successfully obtained root.
Then I used the v3.4 of the exchange patch here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1117452
voila. 4.3, rooted, CWM, and with exchange security overridden.

Well, if anyone's been following the front page recently, Geohot was able to create an apk that would root our phones that is running Kernels before June 3. Tested it myself and figured it's the easiest way to root if you're on Kitkat. This should work on most phones, if not all.
Source: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2783157
APK Download: towelroot.com
1. Download towel root apk from towelroot.com.
2. Run towel root and let it install the SU binary and reboot your phone. (With the latest update, You don't need to reboot your phone to be rooted)
3. Download and install Super SU apk version 2.0 from playstore or here.
4. Run super SU and let it update its binary by normal method (no recovery needed if super SU version is 2.0+).
[Optional]:
5. Reboot and run Super SU yet again and go to settings to move Super SU into /system as a system apk.
6. Reboot to get full root as system app.
7. Install recovery and busybox (busybox should not be installed in case of using [nut]'s dual recovery).
Steps provided by Cookie Ninja. (Modified a bit by me)
RECOVERY: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2261606
and that's pretty much it. Installed recovery, Updated my Binary through TWRP and I'm all set. (You can update it through the normal method now. It's fixed!)
I've tested this on my Xperia Z (C6603) Locked Bootloader running 4.4.2 Stock Kitkat 10.5.A.0.230
Confirmed Working for LB 4.4.2 and 4.3.

Today, the long-awaited update Android 4.4.4 for Sony Xperia™ Z2 is released.
Rejoice!
But, installing this update will overrun the root access. Root access will be gone. So, how to root 23.0.1.A.0.167 FW on Sony Xperia™ Z2?
I'm gonna try the same old "Easy Root Tool" and see what happens. Any ideas would be good!

@niaboc79 's pre-rooted ROM was based on Generic RU and the NC feature wasn't working on it. So I wanted to download a brand new FTF with my customization number and followed the steps on the guide.
ZBAM!
Got my own .167 (4.4.4) ROM (Generic DE) with root on my Sony Xperia™ Z2.
we will find a way...
but you should definitely put question mark in title...
we are lucky to have older fw (I'm talking for LB, z3 can't be downgrade and they will have problems to root 4.4.4. I believe we could use older fw to root fw and to upgrade keeping root...

Sony patched all those security holes and all those methods should be updated.
Of course, someone should try...
Can anyone confirm he upgraded D6503 to 4.4.4?
Wouldn't downloading the update through PC companion and making an ftf/downloading an ftf and then pre-rooting the firmware work? We have recovery for the phone so a pre-rooted flashable firmware should work without working exploits right?

Is it for the D6502 or D6503? If I was able to update my D6503 to 4.4.4 I would have done it but I have been plagued with the same problem as all the other D6503 owners. I'm just going to wait for a UK unbranded pre-rooted firmware (or a UK unbranded ftf, whatever comes first).

i rooted it to get access to some apps and ive been told that you cant update the phone(with the original update) if its rooted.
can i update through the phone although it is rooted ?
if so, did the update release yet ?
in addition, does it contain all the languages incl. hebrew ?
thank you so much
edit: plz move it if it doesnt belong here.ty.

Right now, when I check "Software update", a toast notification appears >> "Communication in progress..."
Root =custom recovery = no OTA. Simply as that. So if Lollipop appears, and you prefer OTA way of update- the only one solution is to use pure stock.

Correct. I mean in general. Usually root goes in pair with custom recovery. So if you have root and want OTA remember not to touch recovery and of course don't delete any system app.

Correct. I mean in general. Usually root goes in pair with custom recovery. So if you have root and want OTA remember not to touch recovery and of course don't delete any system app.

If there is an OTA 5.0 update on the G2 devices, then I am very disappointed.
Normally, on any other subroom, soon as Sammy or Sony or HTC releases their "update" (or source code), xda dev. instantly jump on it right away, and rooted/custom recovery users will have a chance to run the latest update BEFORE ones that waiting for phone providers such AT&T/Verizon to push OTA update.

Rooted device doesn't mean it has custom recovery.
So if you don't have custom recovery you would be fine to upgrade.

Root =custom recovery = no OTA. Simply as that. So if Lollipop appears, and you prefer OTA way of update- the only one solution is to use pure stock.

On my d802 all updates I can't do on OTA only in download mode, yes I have root and stock recovery and every time I apply an update root is gone I don't know why but is fine for me. I hope on 5.0 I can update on download mode ?
