[Q] USB Issue - No/Slow Charge - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshootin

I have been running the Google Play Edition from Danvhd for months without much issue.
The other day I went from 06/04/2014c to 06/08/2014 and everything seemed to be fine.
However, I did notice that my device was extremely slow when charging - and in some cases, it was draining while charging.
Started to grow a little more concerned so started watching the charge indicator when it was plugged in. I would see that the lightning bolt would come and go.
If I connect it to a Win7 PC, I get the sound that a device has been connected - but the hardware wizard never starts or after a few minutes it will start but fail immediately. If I unplug the device from the PC, I get the sound it has been disconnected.
I've gently worked the cable connector and USB plug back and forth to ensure its not a loose connection there.
I've reset, wiped, and re-installed - but it hasn't resolved the issue. I am using both 3rd party and original cables/charges.
Any ideas?
I'm starting to lean toward a bad USB board, but thought I would check here before I got into that.
Thanks in advance!

did it used to charge fast?? mine was the cable.. after i got a lg g2 fast charge cable i could charge the s4 in about 40 mins.. maybe less...

It did, but not any more.
Like right now I have it hooked to my PC at work and its charging somewhat. But it'll stop periodically and might not pick up again for an hour.
It has to be the USB Flex Board.

Well, I said that and as the day has gone on - the device started charging as expected and without issue.
Only thing was when I woke up this morning the device was unresponsive (black screen) after being plugged in all night.
Took battery out and back in and booted back up with 100% charge and no issue today with any charger or cable.
So, go figure.....

Replaced the USB Flex Cable and that resolved the issue permanently.
Think it might have gotten wet at the gym.

[Q] Galaxy S4 won't charge

I should clarify the title by saying that trying to charge this phone is resulting in a number of odd results.
So firstly, I've tried using the wall-mounted AC charger. I then tried using USB on my computer, in 3 different usb ports. The phone was charging perfectly less than 24 hours before this problem began.
I plugged it in as per usual, and it didn't show the little lightning bolt on the batter icon like it should. It wasn't registering that it was plugged in. I tried plugging it into my PC, and it wasn't showing that it was connected via USB. In addition to that, my computer was failing to install the drivers for it. I went back to the AC charger, and tried a few different outlets, including one on a power strip. Nothing worked.
I searched online, and found that other people had this problem, and could only fix it by resetting to factory default settings. One person even had to do it twice to get it to work. So I did this, and it still didn't work. I tried charging my old phone with this Ac charger and cable, and it wouldn't work either. So I thought it must be a fault in the cable. So I dug up the cable (also micro-usb) for my old phone, and tried it. It worked just fine for my old phone, but my S4 still had the same problem, but with something new. It would say "Dock connected" but still not charge.
As of right now, it seems to be charging properly with my new AC mount and old usb cable, but I'm worried that this could happen again. Considering this seems to be a problem for other people too, what should I do about it? Is there some way to prevent this sort of thing from happening? Was it purely the other cable, given the fact that it didn't work with my old phone either? I'm on an extremely tight budget, and this phone is my only way of being contacted for job interviews, so having it in working order is very important. Any advice would be very appreciated!
Having exactly the same problem... couldn't find over the internet a solution yet or a position about it...
Affraid it's a hardware issue and have to send to the assistance...
Anyone know what to do?
Yup having the same issues - but i noticed only having charging issues when battery reaches 20% or the low battery notification pops up
it detects that a usb is connected but it wont charge
Solutions:
- dont let it go below 20 which is ****
- some people claim that if you use a 5pin charger instead of the 4pin which samsung includes solves the prob
Mine is a little more serious I think... haven't found a solution like that yet.
I have to connect/disconnect multiple times and it suddenly works.
But between those connects/disconnects it presents multiple problems, it appears on notification bar "Dock Connected", sometimes appears "Dock Connected" and on the notification bar appears "Suggested Apps (Anchoring)", other times it appears "Dock Connected" and the volume bar appears on the screen and stay there freeze (the phone works, but the bar doesn't disappear)... Sometimes the phone starts charging and suddenly stops, other times it says it's charging and if I remove the charger it keeps the charging symbol on the battery icon...
It's completely crazy, gonna take to service I guess.
Have you tried blowing out the usb connector on the phone with a can of compressed air?
If there is a minute piece of dust there it may be shorting something out - error that dock is connected. I know this happens to other phones, there was a big thread about it on the S3 forum. Might be a simple little thing like that...
Unfortunately that doesn't work for me, will send to service, let's see.
have you solved this problem and how?????

Yep, chalk up one more with the same problem!
At first I thought it had something to do with Aviate, a custom launcher from Yahoo (actually a pretty sweet one at that!)
But I guess not.
My work-around is to reboot the phone while connected. It charges fine while turned off and seems to keep charging when booting while plugged in.
Still... this is a stupid work-around and I want this fixed properly.
Any news from any of you guys?

Had this problem today. Suddenly out of nowhere "Dock is connected" message appeared after plugging the charger in and out. Tried to clean out the dock with stick and cotton on the edge. Then turned off and plugged in charger. Problem exists. Phone charges but stops regularly. It is very annoying when you dont know how to fix this kind of problem.
Any new solutions?
Right after this post, I froze the app "battery doctor 4.9.2" using Titanium Backup Pro (you can just uninstall it i guess). Then just plugged charger and now it's already Almost 90% without any interruption.

Amazing! I've dealing with this problem for weeks and internet didn't give me any good answer, but the whole problem was a baterry monitor apk that for some reason was interfiering with the charger. Thank you so much!
I had this problem too and in my case it was a hardware problem. When i start the charging it kept repeating the start proces of charging with the vibration and the grey battery icon(in case the phone was turned off). The battery icon with the green charging light just didn't showed up. I tried many things but nothing helped. I let the phone keep charging for the whole night but in the morning i saw that it didn't charged anyway!
Then i went to a local phone reparation shop(none official samsung) and they knew immediately recognized the problem and it was the usb/charging connector where you plug it in the phone. They fixed it in 1 hour for a cheap price and from then(i think a few months ago) it charges back perfectly. It seems it's a disease with S4's.
In my previous post I was happy thinking that all this charging problems were solved after uninstalling battery apk. But, in fact, my S4 charges very slowly after that incident. I have tried two other samsung adapters (galaxy s4 mini; grand prime). First one results the same (up to 5 hours charging), the latter was comparably shorter (up to 3 hours), but still slower than it used to be (2 hours normally). So I highly suspected the hardware might be the reason. Thank you for your information, now I will also have the phone checked at some local repair shop. And give feedback of course.

You probably got some water damage in your port. What you need to do is clean it. I used pure alcohol and a toothbrush for that. After that I flashed a custom kernel so I could enable fast charge true usb.
That's the reason your phone is charging slowly, it thinks it's connected true usb. So you need to boost the usb charging. After a few charge cycles I could revert back to my standard kernel and the problem was fixed.
I think ur right Lenny.
Mine S4 got wet last weekend and now i am also getting the " Dock is connected" message when i plug in the charger cable.
I can charge my phone but sometimes while charging i hear the sound go off and on what you hear when unplugging the charger.
I will try your solution and hope it will fix mine too. Thanks for posting ur tip!
I suggest you go buy a new genuine cable for an s4, the s4 does actually require a special cable capable of 2A charge rate otherwise you can end up in all sorts of bother.
Thank you all for sharing tips. I cleaned the port as suggested, then replaced my cable. Now everything is back to normal.

Same problem - galaxy s6
Hi there - same problem, on my 128gb s6. started this morning. Yesterday everything fine, would charge when connected via USB to both laptop and to regular samsung usb power unit. Have now tried 3 different USB cables including the samsung cable, 3 different usb power units and of course tried all 3 cables in laptop usb port. Have checked phone's usb port - clean as a whistle. Have rebooted both connected and unconnected. Started getting 'dock connected' message, now it just wont charge, although starts up fine. I take very good care of the phone, so no water damage or untoward shock damage (never get it wet, never drop it). Remaining battery charge seems to fluctuate between 30% and 40+ %, depending upon whether it's plugged in or not. If I turn it off, then connect usb cable, the phone just reboots, still not charging. I then turn it off and see no green battery charging screen, as I used to seen when connected but turned off. Should I just hard reset and take to repair shop? Still under warranty.
I would return the phone for a warranty repair. Software would not usually prevent the phone from charging when powered off.
As a final test, see if the s6 will charge wirelessly, assuming you have access to a qi charging pad and the s6 has a built-in qi receiver like the North American version of the s6.

SGS4 Not Charging

So I got my SGS4 about 8-9 weeks ago and flashed the Omega ROM. Everything was functioning perfectly up until this weekend just gone. The battery died on Friday night and then when I went to charge it on Saturday, it wouldn't charge. All that happens is the initial battery charging logo comes up, stays there for a few seconds and then reboots into the same thing, a loop (this happens charging both from a PC and from a wall outlet/power adapter).
The funny thing here is that it doesn't seem to be the port on the phone as it's recognising when something gets plugged in. I can even connect it to my PC and Odin can see it. I have borrowed a fully charged battery off a colleague and done a factory wipe/reset and flashed the stock ROM/firmware. Now I can boot in to the OS. However it still wont charge.
It seems as though the "charging" part of my phone is broken. The port seems to be functioning as the device realises when it's plugged in to either a PC or power adapter, it just wont charge.
Anyway, so I'm trying to figure out if this is a software or hardware problem before I attempt to send it back for warranty repairs.
Let me know if any further details are required. Any input is appreciated. Thanks in advance

Although the pc and odin are abe to recognize your phone....there could be dirt particles stuck inside the micro usb port....because we always carry our phones in our pockets...the lint and pieces of thread can get it....i suggest you try n clean it with a small pin....i did it to my phone...and it was much better....but please do be careful..... also try to replace your data cable with an original cable from somewhere else...because with time these cables wear out.....just try it out...good luck....hope you get your phone back to charging condition
Thanks for the recommendations guys. I tried it with the cable/charger that came with the device but there was no difference.
I'll try and give it a careful clean sadeshmagic. Cheers.
If you can find it I would suggest instead of a pin, a can of compressed air. This means no damage to the connectors as you aren't sticking anything in there and any dust/lint/crud get blown out....
Just to provide some closure on this, I got it repaired under warranty and the fpcb board was replaced. It now works fine. Thanks guys.
I have a feeling I might have a similar issue. Woke up this morning, phone dead - no indication from phone that it was charging.
Went to Sprint store and apparently, they dont sell batteries. Dude charged my battery for 20 minutes and my phone turned on, but no indication when charger plugged in that anything was happening.
Used a pin and X-acto to clean out this really gross piece of what appeared to be some kind of sticker/adhesive combined with lint, and now my phone shows as if its charging, but doesnt appear to be. I'm thinking one of the pins is probably corroded and need the same board.
Do you think that board is easy to replace or should I just try to get a replacement through insurance?

[Q] Charging Issues after trying every option I can think of

Back in Feb I started having an issue with charging up my phone, went through several cables and adapters. Eventually using a cable was out of the question as the phone wouldn't recognize that a cable was even plugged in. Initially, I would have to fiddle with the plug some to get it work, then that stopped. Eventually I took the route of buying a wireless charger instead of waiting for parts from China. That worked for a little over a month and a half. Then it would stop charging and give me the red light of death. I would eventually be able to get it charge, but at a slow pace. I first tried with the battery, replaced it and of course it would only recharge via wireless. That worked for about 3 weeks and the problems started happening all over again. I finally got my charging board and a new battery (again just to be sure) in from China. Installed both and made sure all connections were good. In the beginning it would take a charge from a usb cable, if the phone was flat and then that stopped. If you tried to connect it to a computer, it would read "Device is requesting too much power." Wireless worked again so I went with that. Now, the phone is going back to having issues with charging in general. I refuse to give up on the phone, but I feel like I'm running out of options here. I'm running the latest PA 4.4.4 build.
Any suggestions?

USB Charging issues / Computer does not recognize while on

So this issue happened out of no where after my phone died to zero last night. I tried charging it back up but all I could get out of it was the grey charging battery but it would only stay on for 1-2 seconds shut down and reboot. Let it charging for an hour and got to about 1-2% and it would die as soon as it booted up. Factory restored to OA6 and still see the same issue. This is also the odd thing... I was able to connect it to my computer and use Oden to do the restore! After lots of troubleshooting, trying 4 chargers, I realized wireless charging still works fine. Charged it up 100% over night and wireless charging is still working fine and phone is working fine. Still cannot get USB to be recognized while on either by computer or from USB charger. With a full battery, phone off, and USB plugged in phone still flashes the grey battery icon and reboots constantly.
Only thing I can think of is I had it in my pocket after spin class for a little and moisture might have gotten in the port?
Any ideas what happened here?
Update: I ended up just buying the Nexus 6P since I'm about due for a new phone anyways.
Well just figured I would pass this along. Was bored before and looked at diagrams to fix the USB board and saw this little port in the back you can access really easy. Decided to open that up and press the connection down a little tighter (the USB board is separate from the main board). USB didn't work before doing this, then pressed it tighter plugged USB in again and it worked.

Strange Problem with Charging my S8

Yesterday, my S8 said that there was moisture in the charge port. I look in there and saw that there was something in there, I tried to blow it out several times but managed wipe it out with a handkercheif. After that I swiped the notification and it didn't come back again.
At night time, I plugged my phone to the charger to see that after the phone's screen went off, it stopped charging to come back again when the phone screen turned on. It kept repeating this cycle. But when I unlocked the phone it continued to charge until the phone's screen turned off.
I changed the charger, it charged even when the screen was off. Also, it worked when I tried to use a powerbank. But when I used the packed in charger, it kept repeating the cycle.
Thinking that it might be a bug, I restarted the phone to see it's fixed.
I closed the phone to switch it on this morning. But before I switched it on I plugged the charger to see that it gave the "Drop" icon meaning that there is moisture in the port. Then I switched the phone on. The problem came back! It didn't charge when the phone's screen was off. After I tried to charge it with another charger, I plugged the original charger back. It worked even when the screen was off.
To be sure there wasn't anything stuck in the portI closed the phone, filled the port with water, waited untill its dry and plugged the charger. I stopped giving me the "Drop" icon and started charging the phone.
After that, I turned on the phone and plugged the charger. The problem was fixed!
But "was" fixed... After a while, the problem still persists.
If you can say what might be causing this, thank you!
I think, the problem cause is Fast Charge 2.0
Now I opened the Advanced Battery Options to disable the fast charging, but it turns out that is was already disabled! But wait, it says that its "Fast Charging". To enable it, I unpluged the USB-C. It enabled itself! After plugging the cable back, the problem is solved. At least for the time being.
Some interesting stuff is going on with this phone XD
I got similar problem. After connecting charger phone says fast charging blablabla and after 5 seconds charging is stopped and then after 1 second it charging again but with no fast charging. I've tyied few diferent chargers and cables also i've cleaned usb c port wiith isopropyl alcohole with no luck. Fast charging missing. Restart and switching on/off fast charging performed few times - no luck. Must be a bug in system... any ideas folks??
well i dont have does issues with my s8... but it did once happen that phone didnt want to fast charge but after repluging the cable issue was solved...i would advice u to take ur device to waranty service cuz solving problems on ur own is not acceptable and ur device shouldnt have those issues.
