Nook Weather Display and Google Calendar Planned - Nook Touch General

A while back I read:
http://hackaday.com/2013/04/01/kindle-weather-and-recycling-display/
This article inspired me to try the same thing with my Nook Simple Touch, I setup the server side script pretty much the as:
http://www.shatteredhaven.com/2012/11/1347365-kindle-weather-display.html
I added SSH and set the script to run every 5 minutes using as a cron job. I rooted the nook and installed "Nook Touch Mod Manager" and set it to "Hide screensaver banner" under "configure mod options". I also installed BotSync to pull the updated file every 5 minutes. the end result is in the attached photo.

I am hoping to modify the server script to generate the top half the same but the bottom area first 2/3's (Friday/Saturday) will list my Google Calender events as a list, the last 1/3 will be a current weather status for outside where the sunny/cloud icon is under Sunday, and the middle will be the rooms temperature (pulled from a network temperature sensor. The bottom will be a trash remoinder.

So....is this the screensaver?! Looks really nifty.

What about doing this directly on the Nook? It would be really great, bus AFAIK no PHP for the droid...

I did a bit of research, and even if PHP is not available for the droid, python is, with QPython (it runs even on 2.1). I'll do some tests later (maybe next month, I'm pretty busy until then) based on this:

You could always just use the default choice for Android apps: Java.

I could, but I'm not a developer. I'm more comfortable tinkering with scripts, and the original solution is just a few scripts so...

Yes it is, I set it as the screensaver by saving the generated image to the default folder.

You could easily write a script, or with a little work a app for android but that would have to run on the E-Ink device and I want to keep the battery life as it's best.

But that would be more work then necessary besides it would lower battery life.
I forgot to mention, my SSH file pulling method might not be the most stable, it sometimes doesn't update for hours. It seems it goes into standby when the screen is locked. Probably a Rom issue.

one handed usage ?

so I got my Jasjar and I'm pretty happy with it so far, however I keep looking at the Treo and wondering if it would be easier to check my mail and calendar with one hand instead of opening the Jasjar with two hands, waiting through the windows mobile slowdown, etc...
on a Treo you have the calendar button right on the face and you can navigate with the direction pad, etc...
the Jasjar it seems a little clumsy to me for this... any ex-Treo owners out there care to comment ?
Also, can we use the Jasjars direction pad for application shortcuts like that ? like press left for calendar, up for email, etc...
any thoughts and ideas ? thanks !
Bump...
is no one else concerned about this ?
Surprise me !
Don't know if buttonmax is compatible, but i think it's the only app that allows you to reconfigure the direction pad.
Re the calendar, just remap record key to calendar etc?
I use SmallMenuPlus, so can do pretty much everything one handed, although requires a couple of taps down to launch the app.

What a busy today page! Any chance of a rundown of what you have running on there?

I'm using my ToggleStart and ToggleNew hacks (=ToggleToday) to remove the top and bottom bars and a custom colour theme using cetuner, then from top to bottom:
-PhoneAlarm (with a skin I made, here on the board somewhere)
-AlarmToday (I resource edited the dll to change its appearance, but it's not shown here)
-WeatherPanel
-VJTodaySpacer (unreleased spacer plugin, coming soon!)
-VJEphemeris
VJEphemeris is not tidied up yet: this is my old setup
VJEphemeris was written to replace VJAudioNotes(at the top), QOTD (in the middle) and claunch (at the bottom), so I didn't want it to take more space. Eventually it will take the whole screen and be spread out more.
Quoting from here
I've posted a little elsewhere about my plugin, VJEphemeris, which is a long term work in progress.
Thus far it contains an analog clock, date with popup calendar, alarm clock setting and notification (cus you don't bloody know when it's set and on!), Quote of the day, autosizing according to length, missed call notification, last sms details, temperature, volume control, battery status, current phone operator (for dual sims), multi-bank launcher facility and theft protection (detects if user is using a non authorised SIM, and then sms's me with the phone number (and shortly, cellid), permitting me to sms it back causing it to format the sd, optional hard reset and I'm considering optional bricking - thanks Olipro).
That's the basic version I use currently. I've got tonnes to add when I finish a bit more stuff for release for you lot!
VJEphemeris is a continuous test bed of ideas I'm trying to implement. It's unlikely to be released, or at least as is. It's currently entirely customised around my use (although it's all too damn skinnable: I haven't gone into designing a UI yet, I'm just making it easy to use one thumbed! Try cutting out the screenshot and see how you thumb rests naturally on the important stuff. I'm trying to make it nicely ergonomic).

francorg: I released a prerelease of VJAudioNotes to a few people, but it's been replaced by VJEphemeris. I'm not really releasing either for quite a while (if ever!). Too much to add to it to finish it right now, it's a continuous Work In Progress.

Sounds good, I'll take a look at some of those! Thankss!

Multitasking the Android Way

My apologies if this is a repost but I came across this yesterday and thought people here might be interested. Anyone that has ever been confused by the way Android multitasks (let's be honest, we all have) should read this.
http://android-developers.blogspot.com/2010/04/multitasking-android-way.html
Interesting. And the author certainly has a cool last name.
Definitely a good read. Thanks.
I'm still TOTALLY confused between what a process vs service is and how everything works together. what's the difference between an app I just sent to the background vs its associated service or process? are they one and the same?

A process is any task that the CPU has to perform. For example, say you open a text file. That's a process. Once the file is opened, the process is done.
A service is a long-running task, often launched by a process. More specifically, services are A) for tasks need to run in the background, B) usually for long-periods of time (or indefinitely), and C) most importantly, independent of user-input. Instead, services usually respond to changes in the system (ie Battery Indicator, see below), or periodically checking the internet for something.
- For example, the Battery Indicator app, which puts the battery percentage in the status bar (see picture below). Whenever the battery changes in the system, the Battery Indicator service is alerted, and the percentage in the status bar is changed.
- Another example is the Google Talk service, which is running whether or not you launched the app. That's because it needs to stay open in case someone messages you.
Without services, nothing could run in the background for long periods of time. For example, without the Google Talk service, if you wanted to receive a message, you'd have to have the app open and in the foreground 24/7. Once you opened another app, you'd go offline. (coughiPhonecoughcough )
You can view your services in Settings -> Applications (on Sense UI anyway).

Excellent blog post! Thanks!
This would definitely seem to support the "No task killer" philosophy.

[APP][2010/07/02]AppGrouper, a simple catagorised app launcher

Hi!
I'm a longtime lurker, ever since I got my Touch HD when it first came out and I NEEDED to have an english rom instead of a dutch one. Thanks to this place, my phone runs exactly how I want it to (most of the time ).
Except for a decent app launcher. I HATE the win6/6.1 scrollist ones, allthough the startmenu after that sucked a little less. I liked the yotacenter launcher, but in the end I just ran out of space and had to hit the "all apps" button too often and scroll through a huge list.
So I wrote my own in c# under .net 3.5.
And, seeing as I got all my tweaks and fixes from you guys, I thought I should give something back; in essence a quick and dirty app launcher which does exactly what I want: organise the programs I use the most.
It's a catagory per page, has menu, contextmenu and top-scroll-bar driven UI and you can add your own background:
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",
"lightbox_stop_slideshow": "Stop slideshow",
"lightbox_full_screen": "Full screen",
"lightbox_thumbnails": "Thumbnails",
"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
I wrote it to be as device independant as I knew how, but I've really only tested it on my Touch HD1, so I'm really curious as to how it runs "in the wild" (or even on any other HD ). To save some effort, I've just packaged the .exe, which should run from any location. If it doesn't, \Program Files\AppGrouper\ should do it.
It should come with a default background and an icon...for this initial release [call it a beta] I didn't create a cab, so you'll have to copy/edit an existing .lnk file to get the program to show up in the windows\startmenu\ .lnk files so you can use a launcher to launch my launcher (yeah, I get the irony ), or just start the app from the exe.
Anyway, as I said this is the first application I'm releasing to the public, so please give me some feedback I have no idea what "unknown unknowns" this app'll run into on different machines than my emulator and my own Touch HD. The only deletion the program can do is to a specifically named .xml file it generates itself, so it should be safe enough
PS: as I was entering the tags to this post, I realised that this type of software could have been made and released many times: I've only used MS's launcher and the yotacenter one, so any ideas and/or other similarities to other launchers is coincidence and a case of simultanious devellopment (or in my case, retarded devellopment ). Again, any feedback is appreciated, from bugs to implementation to "you've totally ripped off x!". 'Cause I didn't, but I'd like to know about x
Anyway, I hope someone can use this!
Nice apps. The Title Folder box ought be longer to fit the text
Hehe
Ok, so I guess I'll have to set up an auto resize routine for the textsize and the textbox ... check back in a day or two
BTW, what device did you use this on? I'm curious to know if the program works correctly on devices other than touch hd's, too.

Ok app. thanks for sharing
By default can you pick up start menu and folder under it as group?
Else I think mortbutton can do far better job than your program. + .netcf 3.5 requirment
Thanks for sharing it. Few things I noticed
while trying to add an to a folder a drop down menu reveal 3 options - the first one is to add an app, what is the second one? it is blank on my tp2?
after running an app it stays in memory. is this how you designed it? i would prefer if it closed after running an app
finally, can you list here launchers that you came across that are standalone apps, meaning they do not sit in memory or eat CPU. i am looking for something like that with folders/tabs like yours and self-close after use.
thanks for sharing. i have one single question. i have installed it on my herald, but i cannot add more then one app to a group. am i missing something?
Sweet launcher! Thank U
I like your application!
As being an anti manila user Until now I was addicted to Program Finder plugin (attached) running on the Today Screen. Unfortunately the Today Screen does not have the SIP toggle in the bottom bar plus sometimes the Today Screen needs a refresh, due to Program Finder being an very old program; its messing up the Today Screen.
Therefore I searched the whole internet and finally after searching for 1 year I found [attachment]ToggleInputPanel.exe[attachment]. I'm executing programs via icons by running Easy Today Launcher.
Your application is a welcome alternative, thanx again! o/~

Time Tracker for Android
I had pretty cool app for WM6.
Here is source code for Visual Studio 2008:
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1228109/TimeControl.rar
Writen by covr from 4pda.ru
He has not much time.
Can you port it to Android?
His description:
Wrote program that keeps track of time spent by pressing a single button - Start / Stop.
The task's name, then it will remain in the standard calendar PocketOutlook with the category "Completed tasks".
Duration of the task is reflected in the calendar, and equal to the period between pressing the "Start" and "Stop".
The program remembers the time you press the "Start", so you can safely close and even soft-reset to make devices. The next time you start the program automatically remembers the last start time. The program is free.
How about an app that intercepts the GPS data being passed through to another app and replaces it with pre-configured data.

There are a growing number of apps that use your GPS to work out whether or not you can use their service. ITV Player for example doesn't work outside the UK, based on your last known/current GPS location.
I know there are a number of apps that can spoof your location, these require "Allow Mock Location" to be enabled and again some apps do not work if this is enabled.

Combine:
- EmoTrac
- T2 Mood Tracker
- SleepBot (integrate with)
- weight, blood pressure, medication, exercise etc. etc. tracking apps
Stir until well combined, and bake at 325 for 45 minutes.
In other words, a fully customizable tracking app:
- Ratings (0-n rating or this-vs-that, # of steps defined by user)
- Values (e.g. weight, blood pressure, miles run, hours slept)
- Check boxes (e.g. took medication, did task X)
- Yes/No variant (must record some response)
- Note field(s)
- CSV output for Excel, et al.
- Graphs optional.

YotaPhone 2: sub-optimal e-ink text rendering

Besides from turning on high contrast fonts in Accessibility, does anyone have any other ideas on how to improve the reading experience on the back screen? After doing actual long-form reading on it, I'm finding that it's rather...lacking. FYI, here's a comparison of the e-ink text on my Paperwhite (212 ppi) vs. the YP2 (234 ppi):
Kindle Paperwhite (1st gen), Caecilia font:

Kindle for Android, Caecilia font:
Moon+ Reader, default serif font:
Full-res pics are here:

Pardon the low contrast on the Paperwhite snapshot -- it's because of the screen protector. Since the Kindle app is using the same font as the Paperwhite, the software tuning that Amazon made obviously goes beyond just the fonts; it seems they also tweaked the font rendering itself to offer some sort of subpixel anti-aliasing. The YP2 e-ink text looks so jagged and rather ugly compared to the Paperwhite when I have the two devices sitting next to each other.
You can try the mirror config app http://forum.xda-developers.com/yotaphone-one/development/yotaphone2-yotamirrorcfg-1-0-0-t3326208. When setting waveform to PARTIAL (may also need to set "dithering" argument to STEINBERG or NONE), the display quality improves a lot, though the screen refresh rate goes down, also take a look at my explanation and attachments at #22 and OP's at #20

Thanks for posting the screenshot -- it does indeed look quite nice, at least a lot better than mine. Two questions:
1. Does the "slowmode" have a negative impact on swiping?
2. What font are you using?
UPDATE: I just opened this file I have the exact same settings as you (it seems like it's the default settings for the Kindle app). How come yours looks better -- do I have to install the YotaMirrorCFG app to make this work or something?

It's Caecilia font, like your screenshot. Personnaly, i prefer Lucida. I don't know what "slowmode" do. With this default setting, pages swipe quickly, almost without gosthing efffect. I don't use YotaMirrorCFG, it's look's good like that.
It's the 7.6.0.42 version of kindle apps.
