[Q] Nexus 4 Android 4.4.3 Volume Rocker Wake - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
My LG Nexus 4 was never rooted or modified with any kind of mod or launcher.
Phone info : Nexus 4. Android 4.4.3 Build : KTU84L
Does anyone know a simple add on that allows waking up the phone with the volume rocker?
I'm not looking for an app as they drain battery life and probably won't work properly.
I've seen some mods for earlier versions but i have no idea how to match them to my phone or install them.
Thanks!

You need to be Rooted for that.

Yeah, you need root and then you will be able to flash a custom kernel that supports volume rocker wake.

Or root and use an xposed module.

since i never rooted my device
can someone link me to an easy root instruction thread applicable to my version?
also if you could link me to the correct kernel / xposted module?
Much appreciation for your help!

Root with the Wugsfresh toolkit, it's basically idiotproof
Then install the Xposed framework (search on XDA, it's a huge thread) and then download Gravitybox from inside Xposed. Install it by following the Xposed instructions, then have fun with all the customizations you didn't know you wanted but now can't live without!

Don't root like an idiot. Just unlock the bootloader:
fastboot oem unlock
Then flash a recovery
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img.
Boot into recovery and install super su
Much better than a tool kit

Once you've gone ahead and installed a custom recovery (and rooted your phone) use the following link for a mod that saved my life and my phone.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-4/themes-apps/mods-volume-rocker-wake-4-reboot-menu-t2383509
This is not an xposed module but a zip file that you flash through the custom recovery. Works like a charm.

Hey guys
thanks alot for the info
yet since i never rooted my phone and scared to do mistakes, should i go for the idiot proof version?

lots of noob questions

hello
I want to buy a new phone and I like the nexus 4 a lot but I always ask question before buying so here I go :
1- how to root a nexus 4 on jellybean 4.2.2
2- when I root the phone how can I update to the newest os without loosing the root
3- when I root the phone from where can I get the rooted apps ( from the play store or from xda developers ) and how
4- I heard that the nexus 4 has a throttling problem so how can I fix it ( without opening the phone )
5- what is the best app to hide the softkeys when i'm inside an app
6- is there any tweak to use multiple apps at the same time ( like multiwindow on the gs4 or the note 2 )
7- what are the best rooted apps to begin with
and thank you for your response
1. Rooting is very simple. Just use one of the toolkit, it will guide you step by step.
2. Yes you can there is a free app "OTA RootKeeper". It will backup your root and let you update to the latest update. Once updated go back to the app and restore your root.
3. I don't think its allowed to ask for rooted apps on xda forum.
4. I haven't had an issues with it yet.
5. I am not sure for using stock rooted rom but you can use custom ROM like Paranoid Android which has features like "PIE". It allows you to hide soft keys any time by holding power button; select (Full Screen Pie).

Also, in paranoidandroid you can set per app DPI and layout. So you can adjust the settings to use pie in specific apps, then the soft keys for everything else and vise versa.
If you're rooted with TWRP, it will ask you if you want to keep root after flashing stock.
There is an app on play store with which you can hide the soft keys(buy of course you need to be rooted first).

Xposed framework on MF3

Hey guys,
I'm new here and had a couple of questions regarding installing Xposed Framework on my I-337 on MF3. I rooted my S4 previous to being informed the bootloader could not be unlocked.
Since I can't flash any custom roms, Xposed sounds like a good idea but I'm still concerned about installing anything without being able to back anything up.
Is it safe to install the Xposed framework on an S4 running MF3?
Thanks.

I've been researching this as well, one forum that I've found helpful is http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2383484 I have the Xposed framework downloaded, but like to read up on everything before I do anything that could lead to an issue. Obviously, most things that you do to your device involve a certain degree of risk, but if you fully prepare yourself, you minimize that risk. From what I've seen, it looks fairly safe, but I'm still reading. I'd imagine that you've seen this forum as well or you wouldn't be asking about this.....http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1574401 Anyway, I'll most likely be installing soon, if I do so before you, I'll let you know how it goes for me anyway.
Ok, yeah... If you could keep me updated that would be awesome. I'm itching to just try it but I think I'm gonna hold off.

I installed it without reading any info (I was in noob mode)
It installed just fine as I used it to apply Master Key Dual Fix, then later
Android Tuner Module
Greenify
Wanam Xposed
I am new so maybe you want a season veteran to comment.... but it works just fine
Quick and painless
*To cover my butt - I do not give this FACT that it works for me without any issue as a reason to blame me if it does not work for you

I installed it and everything worked fine for me. I had a problem once, when I installed xthemes a module one of the themes i installed using the module was not compatable and my phone then didn't boot up and just got stuck on the att logo. This point I was able to go into stock recovery and wipe everything and do a factory reset and phone worked just fine again. I still had root but all my data was gone.

You can find the Xposed framework installer in the links that I posted earlier. You can download Wanam Xposed from the Play store. Just follow the instructions and everything should go well.....did for me anyway.

Greenify is a good one too
It allows you to hibernate applications (not to be confused with FREEZING) which frees memory and states "increases battery duration".
It does appear to do this. I have been using Greenify for 3 days and I am getting 18 hrs of charge on this
*Normal phone calls - a few heavy games from time to time
battery life is incredible
Have fun fellas

There is one, in fact. If you have the newest version of xposed, you can get it from the download tab in the app (Galaxy S4 Multiple Widgets). I've been running xposed with Wanam, Maximize Lockscreen Widgets, and App Settings, and it works just fine as long as you don't install tweaks made for AOSP or that say they aren't compatible.

[Q] New here help please.

Hello all,
my N4 is on stock 4.3 JWR66Y, stock kernel.
i have been using android since few years now, whenever i wanted to flash new ROMs on my devices i used to find one that used to match my requirements bt here i couldnt find one ROM which includes:- :good:
- screen colour enhancer (franco gamma somthing) & audio blaster
- Rooted, deodexed, busybox
- Custom recovery
(when i m into recovery threads i read rooted n4 is needed & when browsing how to root they say custom recovery is needed.)
i had a Note I and things were so easy with - odin pc - custom ROM - and flash..nvr unlocked any bootloader..
what unlock bootloader?? cant i simply connect N4 to pc through usb cable & by using ODIN on pc flash a Custom ROM which will have evrything (or atleast most of the things i m looking for in a ROM).. things were so easy on Note. Please help if i am missing smthng..i never jump to conclusions, i have been reading this N4 forum since few days (all above points one by one) before flashing nonsense n end up bricking..
few say its not possible rooting 4.3 wug's root tool kit only installs super su & busybox bt doesnt actually root N4..
in short kindly suggest where to start & how to start to get all above points.once i m rooted & on custom recovery i know flashing n all bt this is really confusing here ..i feel damn alone here..
please help. sry for bothering.
thnx in advance.

Update
if i am not wrong i have to start with
1- install naked drivers for ms-dos purpose
2- unlock bootloader - restart in dwnld mode-connect usb-boot commands r thr
3- install custom recovery twrp/philz/ etc via ms-dos
4- install root/supersu/busybox etc by dwnlding that zip.
bt hw to get gamma n color enhancer the screen is quite dull..IPS
Ok please start here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2015469 I suggest you do a little reading, sounds like you have a good grasp on what needs to be done. The toolkit will do all the work, I prefer ADB but thats just my preference. The toolkit automates everything and makes it very easy to do. Stay away from CM10 nightlies if you want to use a custom kernel, it will only cause you headaches. There are plenty of roms to choose from, what were you looking for as far as features. You are not alone, a little patience and some reading go a long way.
thnk u vry much smoka..
i want gamma controller, root (super su, busybox), custom recovery, safe kernel to wipe frm philz like.
for this i need to unlock bootloadr first r8?
btw whch toolkit? wug's??
thnk u again.

Feel for you
Wugs unlocked the bootloader on mine

note to nexus...gr8
if unlocked bootloader ..reboot into dwnld mode, if u hv druvers it'll detect device thn use commands to further proceed with rooting. correct me if m wrong.

I know carbon ROM has those options but I'm pretty sure most other ROMs do too. make sure you read all the stickies, it sounds like you got it now.

I agree 100%. I just got my daughter a Moto G GPE and since there are no working recoveries out for it yet, I couldn't flash a custom ROM. However, with root and Xsposed/Gravity Box, I can set up everything she (and I) need on her phone. In some ways, it makes custom roms obsolete for casual users.
+1. It is one of the best things that happened on Android lately

Install TWRP, and boot into it. Reboot the phone with TWRP it will ask about root, apply it, boot the phone and run the superuser installer.
I like the looks of Gravitybox but it seems to be messing up the magnet-activated wake-up of the phone when using the flip cover - at least with the settings I am using for this module - so I had to deactivate the module for now until I can find out if there is a solution with different settings ...

***need help rooting***

What's up everyone, i'm new to the site and i was wondering if anyone would be willing to help me root my galaxy note 3. I've tried rooting in the past and failed terribly. I tried on a sprint gs3 and a verizon note 2, and i almost bricked both of them. So if someone with a lot of experience would help root my phone and install a custom rom, it would be greatly appreciated. As far as the type of rom, i could careless about appearance...i'm all about performance and battery life. So basically, i want a rom that "overclocks" my processor and removes bloatware and unnecessary apps. I'll take instructions on how to do it but i'd rather someone remotely control my pc [teamviewer] to help. I'll even paypal you like $5 for helping me. Thanks in advance!
I *would* help you, but I'm having issues rooting as well. I'm no where near new to it, been doing it since my HTC Fuze way back when. There are a couple of ways to root, Vroot, will pretty much root anything android and there is Kingo. I would give you links to both, but its not allowed, but you can do a quick google search and find them and info about them. If you're on the MJE build, I was successful with both methods, but I managed to cause a few issues when I was rooted with Kingo and had to Odin back to stock.
You need kingo 1.1.8 and safestrap. Both are one button operations. I rooted and had the safestrap installed and the modified twrp recovery in less than 3 minutes. Kingo 1.2 had a faulty script and causing errors.

Obviously since the bootloader is locked down tight, if you want a custom rom, you need to use safestrap.
You need to download safestrap apk file from hashcode's website, open it, grant root permission, and install recovery.
Once you install recovery you can reboot to recovery right from the safestrap app, then create and activate rom-slot-1
Once active, you can flash/install your ROM.zip file (I would recommend Hyperdrive or Jelly Beans) and reboot...that's pretty much it in a nutshell, its relatively easy
Needing some help with rooting as well. Instead of making a new thread I figured I'd hijack this one
I just tried to root with Kingo, it failed to root. I have a S3 SCH-I535. Where do I go from here to successfully root my phone? I used Kingo 1.2.0.1876. I could not find version 1.1.8.

Thanks, finally got the download. All 1.1.8 links were leading to 1.2 download, had to use a mirror download to get 1.1.8.
Starting root now, hope it doesnt brick! Before I start...I guess I should ask, will rooting and going to a custom ROM fix my battery drain issues? Since the 4.3 update I get about 6 hours of battery life while not using my phone at except to turn the screen on for 10 sec to check the battery level.

I honestly don't know what to tell you. I have a note 3 and 1.1.8 worked for me.
Are you sure it's 1.1.8? I tried many times and downloaded 1.2even thoughit said1.1.8 and finally found 1.1.8 from a user on xda. If you need I can upload the correct version. But as previously stated you can find the most up to date safe strap on the note 3 board. Install the app press install recovery and every time your phone boots it will ask continue or recovery. Make a backup of stock and restore to any slot you want If you want to do stock rooted or select any slot and flash any rom (make sure it's for the Verizon note 3 because with a locked bootloader you cannot flash kernels) I'm currently running neon rom and with moderate usage I'm getting almost 3 days on a single charge. I find wifi downloading I can destroy 40 percent battery in about 2 hours though. Any other questions don't hesitate to ask.

You have to make sure you turn off antivirus. For me that meant turning off avg, Windows Defender and some other stuff I found it. Make sure you have developer options on USB debugging, screen stay on, and for some reason it seems like it helped to turn on unknown sources in your security settings on your phone. Sometimes it took me unplugging the USB and plugging it back in a few times in order for it to work but I just did it myself last week and making sure I did those things allowed me to do this pretty easily and reliably
