That update is not from CM, that's the stock rom. The latest update is milestone 7 and it's still based on 4.4.2 for the time being. HTH

4.2 --> 4.1.2 Without rooting

Basically is this possible, to go from 4.2 to 4.1.2? Mine is fine but my friend's Nexus 7 keeps shutting down.
Will a factory reset restore 4.1.2? Is there another way? Been googling for an hour, & I'm thinking it mustn't be possible with unrooted devices.
Thanks for any help
Mrs Hedgehog
P.S Please don't yell.
Not that I am aware of--I think you'll need to unlock the boot loader to then push the 4.1.2 image to it, but don't worry, its pretty straightforward with a little reading. Check the stickies for guides.
did the move to 4.2 occur via ota update?

Yes it was via OTA update. Bottom, she isn't going to want to unlock her device. Is there no way to put it back to how it was when she pulled it out of the box brand new? Even if she loses everything she would prefer that.
P.S Thanks for answering, appreciated.
Maybe she needs to think again. You can relock it as if nothing had happened!
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
Ok would Google know if she did that. Would it be like it was when she first got it? Say if she had to send it back under the guarantee? I'm shocked actually. I thought a factory reset would take it back to basics. I don't think she'll agree somehow.
Nope, it is like nothing ever happened. No-one shall know (nor care, quite frankly).
Factory reset is more like delete data and settings (and also all your photos etc, if you choose SD card) and return to factory state (I.e. the base OS, which is now 4.2 after the update). It does not roll back to the original OS from the factory, which could be several iterations back.

Wug's Nexus Root Toolkit is what you need.
Unlock, flash back to stock 4.1.2 and then re-lock.

It's Google that pushes the updates.
I've had no problems with 4.2 but if I do, I'll roll back to 4.1.2 and wait...

So I'd still get the notification to update to 4.2 if I reverted back.
But yeah, 4.2 isn't that bad. I do notice some unresponsiveness when clicking icons but other than that, pretty good.

I had to roll back to 4.1.2 on my Nexus 7. The tablet would not charge (didn't recognize the high-current charger) under 4.2. To stop the update notifications I installed FOTAKill (tablet must be rooted). .doc file with FOTAKill installation instructions is attached.
Really wish that Google would have an option for "Never" when it asks for permission to install an update.

Hi, I have a question, If I flash back to stock with Wug's toolkit would I receive the 4.1.2 update OTA or would I have to flash it manually?

If "stock" is before 4.1.2 then yes, you'd get the OTA update notification (which would unroot the tablet. You might as well manually flash 4.1.2.
My Nexus 7 "bricked" when I allowed the update from 4.1.2 to 4.2, requiring a complicated procedure to unbrick it. I suspect that the problem was caused by a "rootkeeper" app.

I wrote that wrong, I meant if I'm on 4.2 and flash back to the 4.1 original that first came with the device, would the 4.1.2 update come up OTA or would I have to flash 4.1.2 manually?

I think you have to update manually. OTA will offer 4.2.

Correct. The FOTA update would offer only the latest version.
On my new Nexus two separate updates were sent in sequence. First an update to 4.1.2 then another update (declined) to 4.2 a few minutes later. It was not a single update from 4.1.1 to 4.2.
Thank u for sharing this info, this saves me the trouble from updating to 4.1.2 manually.
UPDATE: So I went back to the initial ROM the device came with (JB 4.1.1) and Google quickly prompted to update to 4.1.2 (which is what I wanted) and now it asks me to update to 4.2 but I ignore that
Long story short, my Nexus 7 is back up and working flawlessly again!!

4.2..> 4.1.2 Without rooting
Have Nexus 7, stock, has been upgraded OTA to 4.2.1. Have an $80 app (Anywhere Map) which company is working on a fix to operate with 4.2. I use Linux and it appears you can upgrade manually with 'adb reboot recovery' then Power & Vol to get recovery menu. Posts have said simply use 'adb sidload upgrade_img.zip' or 'adb install upgrade_img.zip'. Simple enough. I've only gotten to the menu from which I can choose 'apply update from adb', but have done nothing. Posts have said simply issue the command and select reboot from menu after it installs. This should install new os version without removing apps nor sdcard info. (I have backed up the whole sdcard with 'adb pull' to my computer.)
I have 4.1.2, 4.2, and 4.2.1 images. What I would like to do is put the 4.1.2 on to use until Anywhere Map gets their act together for 4.2. But 4.1.2 seems like a minor update to 4.1 and I can't find that image at Google nor anywhere else.
So the question is as to whether updating with the 4.1.2 image will work or not. I have the material to root the machine manually but would prefer not to do it. This all looks rather straightforward from the many posts I've read, except with my reservations on the 4.1.2 update. Thanks for any comments.

Possible to disable android os autoupdate?

Might be an answered question. Was just wondering if there's anyway to disable the autoupdate. I like my S4 the way it is right now and don't want any chance that it might autoupdate to android 4.3 which can mess up rooting etc even though i have rootkeeper. At least til issues with new android ver are all clear. So anyway to disable this auto os update? thnx..
Your rooted that's enough to disable I believe cus it wont update if modified. .I might be wrong

Rooted my nexus 10 and that didn't prevent it from dnlding the update. At least it has the decency not to go ahead w installing the downloaded update. Now I hv this constant notification on the status bar to install it. Don't want this to happen also to S4
4.3 is at least 1-2 months away so I doubt you need to do this. And got a blunt is mostly right. Being rooted will not allow the installation to happen. It will download the update and tell you have a system update but it won't install on its own.

So any danger of me inadvertently clicking on the update notification and update happens and wiping out my settings? or rooting won't let it updated at all and to update you have to go back to stock first?

The only way of being able to update its just having a rooted phone with no mods in someway and also having stock recovery, if you are rooted with a custom rom or mods and have a different recovery then yes if you click the update accidently then you wont have no problem what so ever its just going to abort.

On my rooted S4 (CF-auto-root), I also have TWRP recovery installed. So this would qualify then as a different recovery? Additionally i also got MF9HotspotMod-Odexed and international SIM unlock on there. So i am guessing all this should be enough to prevent any update?
OTAs won't flash in custom recoveries. If you for some reason hit install update it would boot into recovery and try to install but fail.

[Q] OTA updates with stock ROM/stock recovery but rooted

I ran a few searched but none provided me with the answer - sorry if it's been covered.
I am on pure stock right now (JDQ39 - 4.2.2) and getting the constant prompt to update to 4.3
For reasons too long to get into here I absolutely do not want to install 4.3
I do however want to turn off the OTA update prompt and have found several ways of doing that - the simplest and easiest way is using Autorun manager to disable the updater in part of the Google Services Framework apk, however I need to have root to do that.
I can root the phone, and keep everything else stock including the recovery, and then disable OTA updates for 4.3
My question is this:
If I do this, but am interested in installing Kit Kat OTA if it's released next week, is it as simple as re-enabling the updater using the reverse procedure in Autorun manager and then I should see the update for 4.4 Kit Kat?
Or will the system still want to update to OTA 4.3 before then giving me another update for 4.4? I refuse point blank to every have 4.3 on my phone, again I have a long list of valid reasons why I want to avoid 4.3 like the plague.
If so, my only option then would be to wait until someone posts a stock rooted version of 4.4 and then flash using the Nexus Toolkit in fastboot mode?
Appreciate any replies.
Thanks.

It would appear from other threads on this subject and various other sites, that you'll have to wait for the 4.4 images from Google if you don't want to first upgrade to 4.3. From what I gather researching the same question, to do the OTA to 4.4, you'd first have to accept the 4.3 upgrade, then the 4.3.1 upgrade and finally the 4.4.
That seems odd that you won't let it even touch your device. You should be able to update directly to the latest version, no need to do each update in between.

4.3 was a horrible alpha release IMO, creating many issues.
I'm rocking slim 4.2.2 build 8 until kit Kat hits.

[Q] Does rooting my Nexus causes OTA updates to fail?

Hi all,
I've been searching this forum (and the rest of the internet) for this question but there are not really similar answers.
I would like to root my nexus 4 just to be able to change the host file in the system folder. The rest if the phone I would like to remain stock (for now). But since android 4.4 is coming up I was wondering if it is still possible to receive the OTA update after performing this action.
Anyone knows an answer to this question?

edit: I am checking on something for you... you will receive OTA updates but checking to see if host file is one of the files it checks before it upgrades.
More than likely any changes to your system folder will cause it too fail
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2417810
In my experience you still receive OTA updates, but you lose root while updating. I'm not sure if the hosts file is changed though.
If you're rooted and you've stock recovery then you'll be able to Upgrade but if you've rooted n installed 3rd party recovery then you'll receive update but it won't install. It will fail.

Are you sure about that? I've been running cwm recovery ever since 4.2.0. Every ota update was received and installed without issues, but I always simply lost root until a new method for the new android release appeared.
You can still receive OTA but I would suggest not accepting it and flash it manually using a "safe" method. The OTA update from 4.2 to 4.3 caused problems on rooted phones. Usually it is fine but 4.3 changed the file system which caused the problem, so better be safe than sorry.

Thank you all for your replies, this tells me again that it is quite difficult to say what happens. Since KitKat is probably coming to the Nexus 4 one of these days I will stay stock for now and decide later if I want to root my phone.
I used superSU Pro, and turned on "survival mode" when I did the OTA update to 4.3, and didn't have any problems losing root. Sometimes I'll get a message say I may have lost root access, but I've never had any problems with apps that require root.

on the last update.. I wasn't getting the OTA until I unrooted. I think you have to unlock the bootloader too.. then I immediately received the OTA. I didn't have stock recovery. I was glad that I didn't have to wipe everything.. I then re-rooted.. was good to go.
