I am a ubuntu n00b!
I cannt seem to find my phone when it is mounted with ubuntu.
I read in another thread how ubuntu doesnt need drivers.
If this is true, how do I copy files to / from my epic with ubuntu please?
Thanks
Ubuntu... lol. Sorry.

I am aware that it has to be mounted on the phone.
With the phone mounted no 16 gig drive shows up in places or under computer or any of file location I can find in ubuntu.
Just tried my girlfriends stock epic when she got home from work, and it works like it should. Get a pop up window. Mine does nothing.
Running:
D18
Noobnl 1.1.1 ROM
Noobnl 1.4.0 Kernel
Hers is stock. So the problem must be related to root or the rom or kernel.
Try Turning off your USB debug.

Doesnt work.
Need to try a diffrent rom / kernel I guess, Dont want to I like these.
IF your using a PC try using USB ports which are located in the back of the computer, otherwise (laptops) try a different port with the Original cable you got with the phone.
Like already mentioned try to disable the USB debugging mode. Also from the command prompt try running lsusb command and see if the device is recognized. If the only thing your doing is syncing music and photos you won't need to do changes in your rules file like when you would want ADB to work.
Let us know if this worked.
PS. Also you may want to reboot your phone after disabling USB debugging mode, just for giggles.

Using a back USB port did the trick. Seen this posted before to get the drivers for this phone to work on windows 7. Since I never had to do this I never thought to try a back port.
you can leave usb debugging on, i have no issues with it being on
I know some people have had issues with transferring files to OSX or Linux distros with their tablet, this is because only windows has MTP drivers by default which honeycomb now uses instead of USB Mass Storage protocol. This is so the tablet can use the internal storage even while being mounted on the PC.
Android file transfer for OSX:
link
This will give you a simple file transfer interface for OSX, just run the program with the tablet connected by USB.
gMTP for Ubuntu/Linux:
link
if gMTP doesn't work for you or if you prefer having storage show up in nautilus:
link
gMTP is actually made for managing music on PMP devices but it will let you manage files as well.
Hope that helps.
Wow! I just found Android file transfer minutes before you posted this. I wish there was a way to see the removable media folder.

You can see the removable card, it's in the MicroSD folder WITHIN the Device Storage root folder.

Anything special need to be done, or extra packages need to be installed to get gMTP working in ubuntu Natty. Installed via cli and then plugged in my device and nothing. is there some sort of trigger on the device? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Mine instantly worked on 10.10, so I wouldn't know sorry.
EDIT: I did find this however http://www.xoomforums.com/forum/mot...ussion/691-mount-internal-storage-ubuntu.html
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/natty/i386/gmtp/0.9-1 this is the one for natty i believe.
edit: nothing comes up when i plug it in. i get no devices found
I'm not having much luck with this either on natty.
I rooted and added custom recovery with mine, and now I can't get it to work even with adb. Tablet works fine, I just can't get to the internal memory from my pc anymore.
Does the vendor id change after adding cmw or rooting?
What is the correct vendor id? I used 091E

If you run lsusb, you should see this line:
Bus 002 Device 005: ID 0b05:4e1f ASUSTek Computer, Inc.
The vendorid is 0b05.
I am trying the method using mtpfs (Nautilus) and I'm getting this error when trying to create a directory on the Transformer:
Code:
Error creating directory: Software caused connection abort
And this error when copy a file over to the /sdcard/Pictures folder:
Code:
Error stating file '/media/Tablet/Pictures': Transport endpoint is not connected
Any ideas?
EDIT: I'm rooted with blob v5.
GMTP Lucid 64
After trying mtpfs with no luck, I got gMTP to work with Ubuntu Lucid AMD 64 bit. I think the trick is you need to compile it yourself.
I can't believe I did it, must of accidentally deleted photo album. Stayed up for hours last night and all of this morning trying to find a way to recover the album. I have a bunch of my daughter's pics in that album and I really need them back.
I have a Nexus 4 with 4.4.2 loaded on it and the phone is not rooted. I have been trying to find a way to root the phone without wiping the data so I can try to use diskdigger to recover what I can. I don't know if there is a way with this version, but if there is and you know, please post. If you can show me a way and it is successful you will have some paypal money coming your way. Thanks in advance!

My first response would be to use disk digger like you said, but as much as rooting is a wonderful thing, I don't think it is needed in this case.
Disk digger is actually derived from a desktop app of the same name, that does the same thing with desktop and laptop hard drives.
Web page here
http://diskdigger.org/
If you connect your phone to your computer as external storage then you should be able to run the program on the computer but targeted at your phone, hence recovering your lost files.
Note: if this works then LOTS of files will be found, (including ones you never knew were even on your phone) so be prepared to search through them all.
I really hope this helps, I know what it is like to loose precious files, safe to say you should backup everything valuable from hereon
Let me know what happens either way and I will try and help if it does not work

yeah, just tried the pc software for diskdigger, phone doesn't show in list. Has a advanced tab, but only lets you choose .vhd files it looks like. If only you could get the phone into a vhd.
OK, so the first question is if the phone is mounted correctly, does it show in 'my computer' and when double clicked on can you see files?
Next question is if you are using the .exe correctly, take a look at this tutorial: http://diskdigger.org/node/1025
I'm sorry if this sounds condescending, but I don't know your experience with computers

LOL...no problem. Been a systems admin for about 10 years. Anywho, yeah, this is the nexus 4 so it only has internal memory, no sd card. I can see the phone in my computer, but there is no drive letter assigned, apparently that changed in 4.3 up through 4.4.2, which I am on. So what that means is no mass storage option where drive letter gets assigned, so routine recovery software can't read it as an attached drive.

Hmmm, you should still be able to mount as external storage, I have done so before on that android version.
First thing then is if USB debugging is enabled, this will be in your settings under developer options and should not require root.
Then it is a question of whether your computers drivers are correct, android has a tendency of not liking to do drivers correctly, I used PDAnet to install the correct USB drivers (note these are different to the ADB drivers which you don't need)
Get back to me with the results of those 2 points

Yeah, I had developer options enabled and USB Debugging mode on, maybe it could be a driver issue. I tried PDAnet and that didn't seem to update the drivers for the phone. The device shows okay in device manager, no exclamation point, shows as Nexus 4 as well and the driver seems to be a Microsoft driver. Are you sure you had the same android version? Everywhere I look any version after 4.2.2 cannot be used as a mass storage device because of the MTP-PTP change in 4.3 and 4.4.

I am on 4.4.3 now, and have the phone connected fine right now, have you tried switching between MTP and PTP?
Note: I am on MTP and it is working.
I am sure there is a problem with something to do with connecting your nexus to the computer, as mine is doing so right now. If we can resolve that issue and access the internal storage then you should be able to then recover the files with disk digger.
My best guess would be a driver issue as android has never really played well when trying to set up drivers. But like you said the computer is recognising it correctly. I think perhaps testing the drivers connection my be the next step, use ADB with the command 'adb devices' (without quotes) to see the devices connected to the adb server. If nothing comes up then we may be able to start troubleshooting :good:
Perhaps ADB is the difference, i have it installed and sorted, do you?
If you have never used ADB before, here is a good place to get started and here is another mention of the drivers, perhaps another attempt may be worth a try, with a clean intall
Safe to say in my drivers list it is connected under android device > android composite ADB interface.
Actually yes, thinking about what i have just written i am confident it is ADB and drivers, you should not be connected with Microsoft drivers, they are the automatically installed ones and never work. Follow the guides above (and perhaps some googling) to get the proper drivers and ADB set up, once you think you have test it with the 'adb devises' command, once you get it returning a serial number for your phone then take a look in 'My Computer' again and see if the storage is visible.
nexus 4 only support MTP, not USB Mass Storage, so can't be mounted with a drive letter and can't be used with undelete software . If you know any working solution without root - please tell us, but test first yourself before writing please
P.S. you are on 4.4.3 ?

My most sincere apologies, i was mistaking the mounted MTP device for the mounted drive, i now see what you mean.
In this case rooting is your only option, you need to run the file recovery natively.
I had hoped that this would not be necessary as unfortunately the rooting process will perform a lot of write operations so you must be prepared for some of your images to become corrupted or incomplete, (hence why i wanted to attempt other options) this is just the risk that you will have to face. How many will be damaged is difficult to say.
So use one of the many tool-kits or root manually, install the disk digger APK and you are good to go.
to root you will need to unlock phone bootloader and that will wipe all your device ...
I'm having some trouble understanding how to get my CPUID. I tried to reply to some of the relevant threads but was not allowed due to some kind of missing "Approval". I'm hoping this gets through. My Acer A500 froze about a week ago while running the clock program. It was used mostly as a night stand toy. I've tried lots of stuff here including trying to install the Acer default roms.
SD_PB_G100W_1.007.03_COM_GEN1.zip and Acer_AV041_A500_1.031.00_WW_GEN1-FULL-ROOT.zip and Acer_AV041_A500_1.054.00_WW_GEN1-FULL-ROOT.zip. I copied these to my SD card one at a time then renamed them update.zip. None worked. I tried several others without success.
I cannot get passed the CPUID thing. I tried the A500 manager and I got nowhere. My windows 7 PC does see this tablet in APX mode "Hold power and reset buttons "and so did the A500 manager. Now the strange part, the A500 manager did not reveal any text on the program for any of the buttons. I used a screenshot found on the forum to blindly use it. Of course, it did not give me the info I need "CPUID" to do much of anything else. The A500 boots to the Acer logo and that all it does. I tried hardware and software reset, Power + -volume and power + + volume move the orientation lock button. The first ends up showing Android guy dead with red exclamation and the second shows erasing and clearing message, reboots back to Acer logo screen and that's it.
If I could get the CPUID from this thing, I would try the other tools from the forum. I have nothing to lose at this point. I read the CPUID forum threads over the last few days and I'm beginning to lose hope. Can someone tell a noob step by step how to get my CPUID? I have never hooked this tab up to a PC before and I do not have access to an XP machine. If this is a clue, if I just power the tab up to the Acer logo screen, the driver fails but in APX mode, the machine sees the tab.
Please let me know if you need any other info. I'm a PC guy and know nothing about any form of linux/ubuntu.
You have a couple of options...
If you've got a nandroid backup you'll find it in a txt file.
If you've previously had it plugged into yr pc use usbfeview.
Use Linux to retrieve it.
Also if yr pc does not recognise yr tab you won't get very far at all. Ensure u have them installed correctly, both the Acer ones and the usb ones

My PC installs the USB driver correctly in APX mode. When I boot to the Acer logo screen, the driver install fails. I installed the drivers found on the forum before I hooked the tab up to my PC.

At this point I would pay someone who knows Linux to get this working again. I had planned to use it at a relatives wedding to take pics for them and play music at the reception. You don't have to have a linux machine per say. There are 3 ways to install Ubuntu (most popular linux OS) on a normal windows pc.
1) Install Cygwin. This creates a virtual window to run an ubuntu installation
2) VMWare. Again, creates a virtual window to run Ubuntu
3. Install Ubuntu on top of Windows to have a dual boot system (easiest and more efficient method).
The big difference between 1 & 2, and option 3, is that the first 2 options share resources with both Ubuntu and Windows. This can be a little buggy if you don't have a pretty powerful system (i5 and i7 with lots of RAM).
Where as option 3 gives 100% of the system resources as you boot straight to Ubuntu.
The advantage to options 1 & 2, is that it's easy to uninstall when you no longer need Ubuntu.
Just Google "install ubuntu on windows" and several links to do it. It's actually pretty easy.
Another thing to try first is to download these full ICS Update files for the A500 (501 owners can try this also, but you'll have a 500, but that might can be changed later)
These files are already "decrypted" and are named differently as to keep them separate. Download them all to a folder.
Now, select one of them, rename it to "update" (end result is a file called update.zip) copy it to SD card, boot tab and see if it installs. If it hangs on the install, delete it from SD card, and do the same with the next. Hopefully one of them might take. You may have to try all 4 of them before one works. It's hit and miss.

I tried a few times to install Ubuntu on my Dell 8400. It's a good PC but I do not understand how to "Compile" or install the drivers needed. Can I do this with "Live CD" or a USB boot of Ubuntu without trying to install drivers? The drivers I need for Ubuntu on my Dell are video and on board sound card drivers. Everything else works from the start. I'm very lost when it comes to any flavor of Linux. I've been asking people on several boards for a few years now if they have a working image for the Dell 8400 they could ship to me but haven't got one yet. I would love to get this tablet up and running again. I saw a few listings for Acer A500 repair on Ebay. I wonder if this might be the best route to take? They are charging $50.00 for software repairs and $130.00 for hardware replacement (Motherboard). The hardware replacement is a little steep as I see some used A500s listed starting at $150.00. I would hate to end up buying someone else headache.

If you install, its with a recent "Live CD" (or USB Stick, which I have never used) I prefer the CD version.
I don't have a dell, or know much about them. But if Ubuntu starts up, regardless of sound or perhaps video drivers, there should be no issues in making things work.
As for getting replacement parts, I would think you can almost a better deal with a new device rather than paying for replacement parts.
A working A500/501 goes for about 100-150$ these days,
If the updates I linked you to, didn't work, then it's probably a bad memory block. But you'll have to use Ubuntu, for a couple of reasons, an really no way to avoid it.
1) babsector (although it can be run through windows)
2) UID
Can't help you with your dell Mate, don't own one.

I have an old live CD, Ubuntu 10.X I can try. The Dell 8400 is a business class PC I used in my DJ business. I have 5 of them. I'll just install on one of the idle ones and be done with it. Then I'll stop back to get the files. Thanks for trying Moscow Desire.
So after flashing the new lollipop update I found myself stuck in a bootloop unable to get into the android operating system at all. I used flashboot and the intel flash tool to try and restore to an older ROM. It forze at 91% with an "error:unable to mount /data" I then used the root tool to try and sideload and install the update.zip from adb shell. No luck. When I rebooted I got to a strange efi menu. Looked around, and it gives me the option to install with with windows?
Anyone have any ideas. I'm waiting for radio shack to open, its the only local place that sells USB otg cables locally.

That is something interesting. It is asking which os to boot to, not install.
I'd like to know how you got into the bios? I am looking for a way to install Linux....

Did you get this figured out?
I can see "fast boot" enabled. Have You tried to switch it off? any other menu is displayed?
Have You tried to "power+vol down" on it?
I've tried a few ways to get into the BIOS shown... all failed.
Maybe the only way to trigger the BIOS to show is to fully wipe/format the internal storage so the BIOS can't pick up droidboot or anything else. Quite risky though if it isn't the way.
I'm in no way telling anyone to do this and I have not tried it myself. I'd be curious to hear from any advanced users if they have ever completely wiped the internal memory and what options would be available to restore if things did go wrong.

This guy seems to have stumbled on it also. I flashed the stock kk firmware and I am trying to do it but can't get Lollipop update to work. But it won't boot after it fails so I am reflashing KK again.

Thanks for the link workdowg,
I'm still trying to work out how they did it. Could do with a step by step and whatever files needed uploaded and linked to. Also the bit about not using windows startup programs.

If you try it do let me know. I need to get into the bios to get started on a dual boot to Linux on this bad boy...
I will let you know.
I just asked for the OP to clarify a few things before I go ahead. I may try Linux first with Windows 8/10 being the final install.
So... conclusion. we have to damage firmware to boot efi...
If we could swap img file before upload to tab (during this 25 second wait) we could make windows installation possible. Am i right?

@social-design-concepts suggested we should try to change the boot order using efibootmgr. I've been communicating with him. Here is the post in the Venue thread... http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...postcount=2083

here it is again... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=61108700&postcount=2083 it got truncated.
Thanks workdowg.
It seems it's not as clear cut as first thought. Mind you, I didn't expect it to be. I did try a HP keyboard with OTG in Android and that got picked up ok (No lights on keyboard)
I'm a bit in the same mind as Social-Design. I'd rather have a definite way to restore Android from a totally blank internal drive before I have a go. Just up to page 214 in the thread so it may be covered later.
UEFI soft brick?
Hi guys,
I accidentely tried to use the firmware on my 1050 as described in this thread. I can indeed load the UEFI BIOS with all its settings (even though most don't do anything). But unfortunately, I cannot load any OS. I always get the error "EFI Harddrive failed" - meaning it cannot boot fomr hardrive.
I have used an externally powered USB-HUB with mouse, keyboard and USB-Stick and connected to the 1050 via OTG-cable. If the stick is bootabnle with GPT x64 then it will boot from that stick. All 64bit windows versions that I tried failed to install with "ACPI_BIOS_ERROR". 32bit windows would not start, because the GPT is 32bit and the BIOS does not recognise it.
The best success I had so far was to copy a ISO from android-x86 on the usb stick. It will boot in live-mode from the USB. Not so suprisignly, mouse and keyboard are working, touch isn't. WiFI is working and the SD card is detected. I tried to install this version of android on the harddrive which works, but it installs the EFI GRUB bootloader which is not recognised by the BIOS.
I can also access the UEFI shell.
Unfortunately, I am running a bit out of ideas of what to do in order to get a normal system (or firmware) back. ADB-drivers obviously don't work (the Intel SoC driver is installed as well), so I cannot use the Phone Flash Tool.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

You can get it to boot from USB? Get someone with to use tethered twrp and get a backup of the esp and fastboot partitions.
I have 2 things you can try if the goal is getting back to booting stock Android.

extract and dd this to a usb drive and see if it is able to boot it View attachment 3415895 if it successfully boots replace the fastboot.img thats on the thumbrive with one for your devices and see if it boots. if your fastboot.img is named droidboot.img rename it to fastboot.img.
If you can successfully get your devices droidboot/fastboot.img to load you can then disconnect the usb-otg cable and reconnect it to your PC and use the phone flash tools to restore your device completely.
