You may not need to do anything. You need to enable or have a ROM which has enabled hidden menus, and then you can check whether you are on xLTE. If you go to the dialer and dial *#0011# and hit send, you will see LTE CONN BAND and it will say "13" or "4". If it says 4 then you are on xLTE.
For me it rarely works inside buildings, but I notice I'm on it a lot when I am outside or in the car. You can check if it is enabled by dialing *#27663368378# and going to UE SETTING > SETTING > SYSTEM > NEXT PAGE > VZW B4 LTE ON/OFF > B4 Enable should have a star. If it does not, enable it. DO NOT change anything else or your phone will probably quit working right! Exit and Reboot phone and you're good to go.
There is a thread around here somewhere about enabling the hidden menus.

I'm on Baja rom and unfortunately when I dial these commands in my dialer nothing happens

Check this and this thread out for any help, but basically what you need to do is edit the file /efs/carrier/HiddenMenu with Root Explorer or ES File Explorer and change it from OFF to ON (uppercase required).

B4
I went into the hidden menu and manually switched on B4 and made sure it had the asterisk next to, rebooted and then dialed *#0011# to check which band I was on and it always says I'm still on 13. Am I doing something wrong because it doesn't seem to stick on B4?

No, I don't get B4 very often still and I live in the Metro Detroit Area and in a very densely populated area. Just check it when you are in different places and you may notice it has switched. At my old office I always had B4, and we moved 2 minutes down the street and now I don't anymore. I rarely get it when I'm inside houses or buildings. It's too bad there is no way to tell which towers have it enabled except just driving around and looking for it...

Band 4 is not good for getting inside a building. It's at 2,100 MHz whereas Band 13 is in the 700 MHz range and far superior for use inside a building.
You shouldn't care what band it's on as much as how well whatever band you're on you get reasonable speed and battery life.

Just being on B4 does not necessarily mean you are taking advantage of XLTE. XLTE refers rather to the amount of bandwidth you are getting, other than that it just so happens to be on LTE band 4. In order to confirm that you are taking advantage of XLTE, after you make sure that B4 is on (with the asterisk next to it in the hidden menu settings), you also have to dial *#0011# then read the line where it says BW (either 1st or 2nd line, depending on your modem version), if BW (bandwidth) is 10mhz, you are still on regular LTE (regardless of B13 or B4), if you are on B4 AND BW is 20mhz, then you are on XLTE, meaning you have double the bandwidth of regular LTE. So far, I have NOT seen my bandwith change to 20mhz even though I am in an XLTE area and often on B4. In fact, when the phone is on B4 still with the 10mhz BW, the dl and ul speeds really suck, and connection is extremely erratic, and it just plain sucks, that's why Sprint and T-mobile's connections suck so much too, because they are on the higher frequencies. Unless you are getting the 20mhz BW on B4, for comparison B13 is far superior in signal and connection quality, and I always get much better connection speeds on B13, so don't get too excited yet unless you get the larger bandwidth.

What happens if no 3g is available? Does this apply to the uk as well?
at&t
two questions:
1. Will this enable 3g use on at&t's network?
2. Is it possible to revert?
1. No
2. Yes, just tap in the same code and switch it back.
You can switch back by using the same code.
If you do not have 3G while this is set to 3G only you will not have any data service, unless you switch it back.
It will not make 3G work on ATT (different frequency)
for those who weren't paying attention when they did this, the default setting is "WCDMA Preferred".

Well, because if you are out of 3G coverage area, you don't have and data coverage any more, no web, no email, no syncs, no map. nothing.
Wow, Thank you for the trick, after I did the trick, I tested my 3G speed 4 times to make sure it, My 3G speed is increased greatly. Before this trick I only got about 480 kbit/s, now I tested 4 time I get average 780 kbit/s. That is cool!
Thank again.

3G only???

Does anyone know how to enable 3G only on Vibrant????
I can see the option for 2G only, not for 3G... BTW my phone is rooted...
why would you want 3G only? when "2G only" is disabled... 3G is on but if there isn't 3G signal then it goes to alternative EDGE (2G) temporarily until 3G signal is available
"3G Only" isn't a feature.. and its pointless to have it as well

it will be pointless for T-Mobiles users. But it will makes sense for Wind Mobiles users (Canada) cause Wind only has 3G connection and doesn't have any 2G connection.
Ya, so now you know it's not pointless. So what's the solution?

I'm pretty sure by default with the 2G unchecked that it's on 3G mode.
It's not a feature, it's just what it is...it's always on 3G accessibility.

Use the code for Battery and General Info: *#*#4636#*#*
Towards the bottom there is an option for "Set preferred network type"
You can change that to only use the networks you want.
The descriptions of each of the choices are at the bottom of the linked post.
Hope that helps
I found that menu didn't work for me. I used that menu on my G1 and it worked great, but it seems to have no effect on the Vibrant.

That's the proper way to force 3g mode, and I do it on my phone it works great.
Also, another reason to force 3g only is if you live in a weak 3g area. I don't want to ride the edge network 60% of the time if I can force 3g and get it 100% of the time.
Hey none of the methods I read here work.
So after playing around with my phone a little bit, I discovered a way to actually lock 3g.
Again I'm not a phone expert, and I discovered this on my own, so use with caution, I don't want to be blaimed for a broken phone.
here is how I did, copy and pasted from another forum I posted these instructions in:
Tired of edge speeds, want to lock in 3g? Okay this next one, do at your own risk ask usual, use with caution. I kinda figured this one out on my own, through trial and error, so I’m not sure how stable or accurate, or even how safe it is to do this. I did notice though, if you screw up, you can use the factory reset code above and things should go back to factory defaults.
Okay…so again do at your own risk. Also by locking into 3g speeds, if you ever go into a non 3g area, or if your 3g signal is poor in your area, then your phone calls will drop and data will stop, unless you go back and set the phone to its default automatic gsm/cdma settings.
Dial: *#*#197328640#*#*
Click [1] debug screen
Click [8] phone control
Click [7] network control
Click [2] band selection
This is where you make a change, default setting is [1] automatic, which means it chooses automatically between gsm/cdma (Edge vs 3g). So we are going to change this and set it to wcdma band which is 3g.
Click [2] wcdma band
Click [1] wcdma all []
Now it should display “select wcdma all bands [*]"
Now on the bottom of your phone, click the menu key, it’s the one next to the home key, now click back, menu again one more time, back one more time, this is just to confirm it set to number 2 wcdma band.
Now click menu key one last time, click end.. and you are done. Now to double verify that the phone is locked into 3g, dial in: *#*#4636#*#*
Then click phone information Then scroll down to “set preferred network type” It should now have listed “wcdma only.” PS, if you tried to do a shortcut, and just set wcdma this way first without doing the lock above, it would just go back to gsm/cdma auto once you exit the screen.
Your phone should now be locked into 3g.
Just to confirm, i upgraded my firmware to XWJM5 today, and i noticed that in settings > wireless and network > mobile networks, there's a new menu 'network mode' in which there's 3 options - auto / gsm only / wcdma only. Nice touch!
In answer to the cynics, there are times when browsing, when the phone is borderline whether to give you 2g or 3g, it does come in handy, and it's safer too, as if i have to browse on 2g it makes me want to smash the phone up!!

Crappy Tmo service + horrible GPS....a Miami Rant. ..

I just need to rant a little bit pleawe feel free to join in....I'm sure this has been done before but seriously F#$& you Tmo in Miami, I'm basically paying for a paperweight. I have no reception at work, school or in my own house! Wtf!!!!! Are you seriously kidding me? You'd think the "Nation's Largest 4G network" would have an amazing 3G network...well you don't! Now about the GPS explain to me how I'm literally about 10 miles from home and my GPS seriously thinks I'm still effing home! F$%#! At this point the only reason I'm still on this crappy network is because of the ROM development. If Team Whiskey worked on CDMA Sprint phones then i would so jump on it. God!

Why would you get T-Mo service if it doesn't work anywhere you need it to work? Didn't you have a grace period to try it out?
Every network has massive holes in coverage, even vaunted Verizon. You should choose a carrier based on whether they offer coverage where you live, work, and otherwise need phone coverage.
Seriously, you need to be angry at yourself for making a stupid decision. It's like buying a diesel car in an area without any diesel gas stations and then blaming the car company and the gas companies.
That's odd. I'm in Miami most of the time for work and school and I never have problems with connection. Only time I do is in some buildings at school where I don't get reception for some reason but for that I use wifi calling. You may just have a bad vibrant. As for GPS it only acts weird when I'm at a redlight and it thinks I made a uturn for some reason.
Try upgrading to KA6 and then factory resetting.
Or just factory reset and then upgrade to KA6 and then reset again.
Don't Cry... In California TMO is GREAT and Sprint REALLY REALLY SUCKS here in Ca

Just do Settings > Wireless and network > Mobile networks > Network mode > WCDMA only. As you say, if you get into a non-3G area you'd need to set it back to GSM or Auto. It's perfectly safe to make a Settings change.

How To: Selecting/Deselecting network bands

First want to put it out there that you do this at your own risk
I love that T-mobile has Band 12 LTE coverage but for me the data speeds on Band 12 are horrifically slow, so I prefer my phone to be on Band 4 LTE (at least while at work).
I used to do this change all the time on my S6/Edge and the steps are vary similar to do them on the S7(slightly more involved).
To start with, if you mess with bands, it can(and probably will) affect some sort of your service
So to change network bands you have to enter the service menu. To do this, go to the phone dialer and enter
*#2263#
Once here you will see a screen saying ServiceMode followed by various options
To turn off Band 12 choose LTE Band Preference (#4 on the list).
Then hit next page until you see Band 12 and deselect it (this will remove the * from next to it).
Once that is done, in the top right you'll see where it says "More" select this and choose "Back" - do this until you get back to the main page
Now back at the "Main Menu" choose "Apply Band Configuration" (option 7) and you're done.
Once you exit the menu(by hitting either home or the back phone key) you'll lose signal for a second while the phone switches the bands around.
To revert back to normal, enter service menue *#2263#, choose "Select All Bands"(Option6) and then Choose "Apply Band Configuration" and you're back to normal
Hope this helps someone
EDITed the info above so that you can turn off just Band 12 and keep calling features
Updated the instructions, figured out how to make the phone stick to Band 4 and still retain ability to make/receive calls
Oh Ya band 12 is terribly slow. At least when compared to band 4. Band 4 is wideband at 20x20 20mhz bandwidth while band 12 is 5mhz bandwidth. It's just barely enough.
I was wondering why my speeds suck since I've upgraded to a new phone guessing this is why
Do you have any approximations of the speed difference between the bands, like with speedtest or something?
I didn't notice any difference in speed with my tests was really hoping for better. I'm only getting about 15-20mbps now I was getting between 60-80 about 3 months ago

T-mobile V20 Band 12 solved

I know some people were having problems keeping or even getting on band 12 with the V20. The people at T-Mobile were useless, even the engineers. After much poking around, I found a solution that works...for me at least and hopefully for you guys.
I had a hard time finding a dialer code that got me to the right menu. This is it. Now, this is, as far ask I know, only for the Tmo version.
*#546368#*918#
Tap Field Test
1. Modem Settings
2. LTE-A CA setting
3. Choose Pcell B4 Scell B17 option
4. Choose Restart Later and hit the back button
5. LTE Band selection
6. Choose Band 12
7. Reboot
(if you still aren't getting band 12, just dial code *#546368#*918# then just do 5 and 6 again.)
I get a solid band 12 connection all the time. This has helped tremendously with battery as well. It's connecting to a much closer tower and not connecting to a band 4 tower a zillion feet away.
Hope that helps!
I am on T-mobile. How do I find out what band I am using? Thanks!

Yes that's a common trait of band 12. You get much better coverage but speeds aren't as good. For me, it's still good for what I need plus no dropped calls, awesome connection and no battery drain. Was a worthy trade-off.
Enter the dialer code, modem settings, LTE-A CA, hit the top most option (it'll say all enabled). Back button, LTE Band, band you were on before. Probably band 4.
Or you can just reset network settings and it'll detect everything by itself.

Tried it both ways. I was hoping the reboots would help, but no dice. I've been repeatedly selecting Band 12 through the Field Test menu. I'll select 12, then go to the LTE Discovery app, see that it's on Band 4. I'll toggle airplane mode to see if that triggers something, but still no dice. So then back to the Field Test > Select Band 12, rinse and repeat. No matter what I do I can't get it to stick.
What's your network mode setting? Settings > Wireless Networks > More > Mobile Networks > Network mode? I'm using GSM/WCDMA/LTE Auto.

Yea I'm on auto too. I never restart my phone or use airplane mode so that might be a hitch. Actually, it's kind of a good thing cuz band 4 is always there if you need it.
I'm gonna add the dialer code in my contacts so in case a reboot is called for, can just toggle it back to 12 real quick.

Just for ****s and giggles, try copying it from my original post and pasting into the dialer. If that doesn't work, that is weird. I'm not sure why it would work for others and not you. Strange.
It's all dependant on what you need. Like I live in Woodstock GA. It's kind of the sticks and I was lucky to get one bar and phone was always hot.
But now getting 5 bars easy.
Just weigh what is most important to you and decide from there. Plus you can always just change the band back to band 4 if you want.
Worked flawlessly. Thanks.
Code not working for me either. I'm definitely Tmobile. I've tried manual and copy/paste. It just disappears.. Thinking it might be something I've frozen.. I'll look.
Nope. Unfroze only thing it could have been in my list and still..
I'm using the 996 unlocked version and I can't seem to set the band ( responds with FAIL). Sad

T-Mobile h918 here and does not work.
I manually enter code in dialer and hit call and all disappears and no menu. Very odd.
