Confirmed: you can restore 4.2.2 base rom backups after you've Odin flashed the 4.4 kk update with the new bootloader...just an FYI as I've been able to successfully restore back and forth between 4.2 and 4.4 base roms

Easier said than done... You fail to mention: Unless your app has bug fixes 4.4.2 will cause issues and not to do a full restore. Also you led us to believe you can restore to 4.2.2 or 4.2.1 from 4.4.2. Only the apps you can do so, unless they are OEM specific and are only made for 4.4.2.

actually I didn't fail to mention anything...i did a full normal full wipe of 4.4.2 after I Odin flashed it, rooted and Odin flashed recovery then a normal full restore of 4.2.2 system apps kernel the whole deal.....even my custom kernel restored back fine dude just as I said with zero issues...and to be clear I never once mentioned 4.1 did I? You said 4.1 stop putting words in my mouth....if there had been issues I would've mentioned it...all my apps and root were in tact and those I greenified were still hibernating, even my Wanam them came back dude.....my 4.2.2 rom and apps restored flawlessly so I'd appreciate you not put words in my mouth again thanks
Mega
Dude your apps have nothing to do with anything...all apps that you had on 4.4 get wiped if you do a proper wipe then your 4.2 apps restore with the rest of the system and data apps partition if you backed them up so maybe if you knew what you were talking about you wouldn't be trying to call me out mistakenly
Whoa whoa whoa children please stop where you are right now. Let me clarify some things...
Yes, you can restore 4.2.2 using Odin to flash the stock tar file.
No, the bootloader WILL NOT be rolled back, once you have a Knox bootloader there is no going back unless you have the equipment and resources to basically JTAG your device to perform a NAND flash of the original bootloader to the device's eMMC controller. This will wipe your entire eMMC which is your internal storage so you will lose everything.

Sorry grandpa lol
Thanks I appreciate it but I'm moderately familiar... I have builds out for the note 3, note 12.2 pro, galaxy mega, tab 8.4 and (galaxy gear but only for myself and some friend) all currently...and have my personal other note 1, note 2, note 8, and note 10.1 2012 roms across their respective base builds that I still occasionally get out and build for....anyway i actually only did a simple restore of my stock 4.2.2 cwm backup just like every other time as noted above in my previous posts...a simple clean wipe, clear dalvik and cache, restore 4.2 with civz kernel just like normal after I Odin flashed the 4.4 stock rom, flashed recovery and rooted it and made a backup of kk then restored 4.2 backup and it restored perfectly ...i only tried it knowing I could Odin flash 4.4 again worst case scenario... and my note 8 collects dust anyway... so so after the successful restore I made the post for anyone who may be interestd cheers

Just to confirm, downgrading to 4.2.2 via pc odin is still possible without any ill effects other than the knox flag being tripped permanently?
and this would be with the stock 4.2.2 rom package from sammobile, no editing, decompiling or any of the sorts???:silly:

You can definitely flash the stock 4.2.2 tar file using Odin 3.07 without any problems. I suggest wiping data and cache first.
You should also be able to flash any custom ROM using a custom recovery such as PhilZ CWM and perform a restoration of any backup without any problems other than Knox counter being tripped.

I've only used stock and the FlexNote 4.4.2 ROM from @civato since upgrading to KitKat but I think some users have experienced issues with charging when the 4.4.2 bootloader is installed in combination with a 4.2.x ROM.
The 4.2.x ROM still works but there may be a few glitches elsewhere.

Sure there's always gonna be oddities when mixing any systems...but I upgraded via odin to 4.4 and restored 4.2 the day I posted this comfirming downgrade is possible months ago and have stayed on my 4.2 firenote rom with 4.4 bootloader since without issue so sure with anything your mileage may vary depending in your device but that's always the case on any of the 12 devices I build roms for

I'm pondering getting a GT-i9505G (Google Play Edition), and was wondering - since the bootloader is unlocked, could I flash a Touchwiz based i9505 rom to this device with something like Mobile ODIN to skip the modem (since I presume it wouldn't be compatible?).
Anyone heard anything about this?

I was thinking about the same concept, but only a little bit more radical.. Let me explain: I recently flashed my Galaxy S 4 GT-I9505 to a GT-I9505G (I rooted my phone and put android 4.3 on it). The only problem is that it was a test version of android, so it has a few, but very annoying bugs, like a huge battery drain from time to time and some very specific app crashing.
I was wondering if I can flash my phone back to stock, the way I bought it (with android 4.2.2 and TouchWiz skin). Is this possible by flashing the stock GT-I9505 firmware on my device (hence the GT-I9505 and GT-I9505G are almost the same devices), or is there another way? And do I have to root it again?
FYI: I have also made a TWRP backup of the situation right before the flashing of android 4.3, but if I want to do it that way I have to root it and flash TWRP right?

Yes, you can ODIN back to complete stock I9505, and yes, you'll have to re-root, unless you flash a pre-rooted ODIN file.

I understood it was possible but flashing instead doing OTA. is it true?
This is one of the reasons why I stay unrooted as I get OTA updates without hassle and without losing any data. No need to flash or backup anything.
No risk of bricking the phone.

so i just had to odin to factory stock because i was in the boot loop into download. but i stupidly updated the software thinking it would update me to something other than mf3....that was not the case. it put me right into mf3. should i odin back to stock and just root and recov from there? or can i just root to customize. i have no problem starting from scratch but some advise would be great!!! please and thanks!!
If it updated you to MF3 you at this time can not Odin back to stock out of the box.root is possible but no recovery or Roms so please don't be a static of the "I bricked my phone"section. Read/research till your eyes dry up and burn

To b honest I haven't checked out how to root MF3 cause I've managed to stay away from the OTA update,I m still MDL base. I check on xda everyday to c if/when they will get the bootloader unlocked so we can go back to stock anytime we want.please don't quote me and I hope u can achieve what u want till it is fully unlocked.

without root, you can simply disable the apps you don't want to use. if you want to root your phone, you can use titanium backup to freeze the apps. everyone is saying freeze and not uninstall because there is no current method to restore our phone on mf3 update. so if you screw something up you're ****ed. I personally used rom toolbox pro to backup all the apps to an external sd, then I deleted them from the phone and haven't had any issues that I'm aware of

Search for rooting with MF3. There is a way, but there is no custom recovery. If you do root your phone and begin removing bloatware, you may cause irreversible damage since there is no way to odin back to stock.
I would wait until we have a way to install a custom recovery.
Root is possible, bloatware removal possible. Just be extremely careful what you delete or install for that matter, because currently there is no recovery at the moment for MF3 because of the locked bootloader. [email protected] You AT&T [email protected] You!
I stayed on 4.2.2 rooted with TWRP and never took the MJA/MK2 OTAs, to avoid knox. I've been waiting for KitKat, and I'm ready to take the plunge. I've read through a bunch of threads, and have thoroughly confused myself. I have a few basic questions, so I can determine what my options are:
1) Is it possible to go from MF9 (rooted) to NAE, and retain my data? What happens to the modifications I made to MF9 (hotspot, xposed, etc.)?
2) If the answer to 1 is no, is it reasonable to assume that there will be a flashable NAE rom in the near future, so that I wouldn't have to odin to MK2 before going through the OTA update to NAE?
3) Should I give up on trying to keep my existing bootloader, and just suck it up and take knox? It seems like there's probably enough differences in the rom and modem that the bootloader is probably a necessary evil at this point.
Thanks in advance for your help.
There have been several reports of people whose WiFi and data have worked just fine with the NAE ROM plus older bootloader like MF9. I'd wait until a stock rooted NAE ROM appears so we can try it with the knox-free MF9 bootloader.

did clean install (but had some apps backed up with Titanium)
to my knowledge the whole Knox thing is with Touchwiz based roms
both slimkat and CM 11 are not,so no worries about Knox

gonna get around to flashing the NAE modem later though

Alright. I'm personally looking to update only to official rom and NAE modem, not custom rom. Hoping I can do upgrade instead of clean install but hoping to get root access back or keep it at least.
Ok so i dont think i care about the knox thing anymore.. So with that said i would like to upgrade to 4.4.2 with the stock sprint rom. What is the best way to go about that? Sorry im just confused with the bootloader and modem flashes.. Its been awhile since ive had a samsung phone.. Im assuming i cant do the OTA due to TWRP....
I am running completely stock and rooted with saferoot,
4.2.2
baseband mf9
bootloader mf9
TWRP installed
please help
Can you just unroot and install the NAE ota then reroot with cf auto root? This is coming from stock rooted mk2.

You're the Man!!
Get your rest, Doc--everyone can wait.
P.S.--Although I am a little older than you, Doc, I know that you are not a young man--where do you get all your energy???? I wish I had some of it.
While the World is sleeping the Doc is working--cooking his ROMs.

Thank you Dr Ketan for your presence with us ?
I'm longing for uploading and flashing it ..
A few questions:
1) I've still old 4.1.2 bootloader . Have I to update it necessarily to mj5?
2) I've 5.15 philz recovery. . Is it ok?
3) Full wipe before?
Thank you ?
P.S. Obviously I'm on your 4.3 rom ?

The simple answer is--if you want to avoid any unnecessary problems--upgrade the Bootloader to MJ5--don't go to a more recent version if you think that you might ever want to downgrade to a 4.1.2 ROM. Personally, I think that this is unlikely since 4.3 is a better option than 4.1.2, and it follows that 4.4.2 is an improvement on 4.3.
I am still on MJ5 but mainly due to issues with KNOX in later Bootloaders.
One day I will upgrade--but maybe, by then, some amazing Dev will have figured out a work around for Samsung's dumb KNOX.
If you are moving up from 4.3 to 4.4.2 then Philz 5.15.0 is not suitable--you should upgrade Philz to 6.19.3, or 6.25.0 [ or even 6.15.4]--some ROMs require unticking the option to Update the Binary in Philz--therefore a lot of folks prefer to go with a recent edition of TWRP. 2.6.3.2, or 2.7.0.0

My query is something similar:
I have been facing a peculiar issue of not being able to restore my backups in recovery (tried with backups in internal as well as external sd). Right now, am using stock pre-rooted MKD by dr. Ketan topped up with mod project V3.5 by tamirda and dr.Ketan. The recovery is Philz Touch 5 CWM base Version: v6.0.3.7, Build version: 5.15.0-n710x-i317M-T889.
Not being able to restore creates innumerable problems and have to begin flashing a rom from scratch. Today, I realised that my bootloader is DMG1 (attaching a screenshot). Does this has anything to do with my problem? And further, since am going to flash pre-rooted kitkat, should I change my bootloader, and if yes, to which version?
I originally posed this query to dr. ketan but since he is busy with the kitkat rom for all of us, any help from anyone would be heartily appreciated.
regards,
Durgesh

Most of what I wrote above applies to your case--upgrade Bootloader using ODIN and Bootloader Tar file, don't use Philz 5.15.0, but one of the later versions.
As I say--the more recent Bootloaders are fine, in fact desirable, if you are not worried about Samsung Warranty issues--if your phone is out of Warranty--because they will trip the counter in Download Mode--the only suitable Bootloader that does not trip the counter is MJ5--and this works fine with KitKat.
On an older Bootloader some folks have no problems--but others have all sorts of issues--yours could be an example of this.
I can't guarantee that your backup issue will get fixed but certainly making a good Nandroid with a suitable version of Philz or TWRP gives a greater chance of a satisfactory Restore.
