Recovery can't mount data - Droid RAZR M Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello, I am a novice at best when it comes to this. That being said I have successfully Unlocked my boot-loader, rooted and installed roms to my phone. Recently when using TWRP 2.7 I noticed that it would not mount data when restoring my backup. I then noticed it would not mount data when creating a new backup while using TWRP 2.7. I then installed CWM latest recovery. It does the same thing. In the process I got stuck in CWM and had to AP Fastboot to stock 4.4.2. Now with CWM it will not mount data when doing a backup. I cant load a rom without having a secure backup. What can I do? Need help! Calling all devs!

I'm pretty sure that the only recovery available is CWM for the RAZR HD. However, that recovery can't mount data. I don't think there is a custom recovery right now that had full functionality for the RAZR M.
With that said, the kernel sources have been released, so I would say its only a matter of time before an updated recovery is available that can support mounting data.

I have had TWRP work just fine in the past. Others are having no problem with them as I can tell. This is an original Razr M.

There is no TWRP designed for the KK update, yet. CWM is only working aftermarket recovery right now. TWRP should be out any day.

OK let me give more details. I was running Beanstock Rom with Android 4.3 on my ORIGINAL XT907. I was running TWRP 2.6 flawlessly. I tried to load a new ROM (KitStock 4.4.2). When I tried to backup my current configuration with TWRP it would not mount data during the backup procedure. I panicked and backed out. I seen that CWM was a better choice and installed CWM v6.0.4.8 It also would not load data during backup. I then tried to back out of that and it got stuck on boot. would not go past no matter what. tried to load KitStock ROM anyway. Same effect. I could still get back into CWM recovery and also bootloader. I then installed the latest STOCK ROM I could find and it is version 183.46.10XT907.Verizon.en.US. Kernal is [email protected]#1. Build number KDA20.62-10.1 Android version 4.4.2

I think what I have discovered is that I must have a "working" corrupted file script whit this stock ROM. I discovered that if I formatted my SD card I could mount the data and backup my nandroid. So my SD card was corrupted??? Also after I knew I had a good backup when I tried to install CM10.1 it gave me a status 7 error. Ok did the status 7 fix by editing the script on two different ROMs. It still aborts installation. Now I consider myself a noob but I'm no stranger to the ROM installation process. I've done all the right steps. Backup. Wipe 3x, mount system, install. This seems like a deeper problem. Please HELP!

CWM 5.5.0.4 and 5.8.31

what is the difference between CWM 5.5.0.4 and 5.8.3.1. Why ROM manager installed CWM 5.8.3.1 in Galaxy Tab P7500 while taking backup, though CWM 5.5.04 was already installed using ODIN I.85. Is it necessary to re install CWM 5.5.0.4. If so, how to re install CWM 5.5.0.4. My galaxy TAB P7500 is running on stock ICS 4.04.
Only a few changes are made(you can't even say where)from 5.5.0.4 to 5.8.3.1...
The ROMmanager must make sure that the CWM on your device matches with the version of the APP,but upgrading does no harm i.e. it's no need to reinstall CWM...
Beware!don't go into CWM if you are on the stock ICS because it has the rolling screen issue, flash all you need with ROMmanager, don't install CWM touch when you are using stock ICS(it'll be a waste of time, mony, etc)
If you want to get out of CWM(5.5.0.4) after flashing but get confused with the rolling screen just do thisress vol down and then press the power button twice...the tab restarts with all the changes you've made...
And finally:feel free to ask questions,XDA in always here to help you!

I'm using CWM 5.5.0.4 here with stock ICS. No problems at all.
5.5.0.4 is the version recommended to prevent rolling recovery.
I also followed pershoot's advice in the 2.6.36.4 thread. I did get the rolling recovery even with 5.5.0.4.
I am on stock US ICS and odined the following:
(1) US ICS 4.0.4 BL variant
(2) Recommended recovery (CWM non touch 6.0.1.2)
Now I have no flicker in the recovery or the ROM like I had experienced in the past. However, I'm rather way of CWM 6.0.1.2 because I used the previous non-touch (6.0.1.1 I think) and wasn't able to restore a Nandroid...it just hung on me. Where did you get the 5.5.0.4 that worked with stock ICS ROM/BL Jack?
Hi dj.
Can't remember now where I got 5504, read so many guides.
I have it in my drop box.
I'll post the link for it shortly.
Really

You're welcome.
Good luck.
Thank you for your nice advice and assurance. Sir I have another question/doubt. Please clarify
I am having P7500 in India. I flashed Italian stock rom 4.04 using ODIN. Later rooted the Tab using CWM 5.5.4 method. subsequently I installed ROM Manager. I did back up. It appears that CWM version was changed by ROM manager. Now I want to flash Indian stock rom 4.04 recently released and also rooting. Please suggest a mode.
Download the stock IN firmware from Sammobile and flash in Odin with PDA with your tablet in download mode. You will lose everything on your internal storage so if you want to keep your backups make sure to move them off the tablet before you flash.
You'll find lots of guides in the Q&A and Dev sections that will provide root methods for your 4.0.4 stock firmware. Or, you can skip all of this and just flash a rooted ICS ROM with a full wipe to save yourself the steps. It's really up to you.
Thank you Sir for your valuable advice.
Please clarify, If I flash INU stock ROM 4.04 on ITLY stock ROM 4.04, using ODIN, will it wipe out applications data also?
Earlier When I flashed ITLY stock ROM 4.04 on my original stock ROM 3.2 INU on my galaxy tab p7500 using ODIN, it did not wipe out any data from internal storage and all the applications were automatically installed after reboot..
It may, it may not...it depends on whether or not you boot up after the flash without issues. If you get stuck on the Samsung logo or a boot loop, you will need to boot into stock Android recovery and do a factory reset, that would format your /data partition and result in loss of apps etc.
That Thanks button works well if I have helped you makes me look like less of a noob! Good luck to you

I recommend doing a full wipe with CWM recovery before flashing with ODIN. Doing that avoids having to do a full wipe with Stock recovery which wipes the internal. Wiping before flash should avoids formatted internal. Would others confirm, this is what I have noticed on my tab.

The Defy TWRP works on the Bravo, but its only up to version 2.1 and can't install large Aroma roms (WR, Pikachu, etc). Your better off reading the thread over at Defy Development. Its neat and works, but our custom CWM 5 is the best for us in terms of reliability and stability.

Its installed be default with CM10 or PA. The newer the rom, the newer the recovery.
You can copy the zip/system/bootmenu/.... to other roms to get the touch ui in the bootmenu, just don't overwrite your current roms init scripts....and use a PRE 2nd Kernel zip when porting the bootmenu to non custom kernel roms. This isn't something I'd advise doing cause if you don't know what your fully doing you can easily put yourself in a position to flash the sbf. I sbf'd 3 times adding the JB Touch bootmenu to CM7.

I installed cm10 then after I went to stable recovery and I wipe data/factory reset and then wipe cache and again wipe dalvik cache, and then I went to install zip from SD card and then choose mokee and flashed the zip.and when I reboot the phone it got stuck at Motorola red logo. again i boot into recovery (it was different, which mokee installed maybe)and when i wipe data and cache it said something like this:can't mount E/cache/recovery/log .and then i went to backup and restore and restored my cm10 backup and it only restored system(no data) why did this happen did I did something wrong?? or is there problem in recovery?? please tell me about this.

I have a couple of ideas, but I'd be guessing with all of them. Probably just an error from CM10 using a newer recovery than Mokee. Since CM10's /system was restored, so was its bootmenu\recovery -- try doing a full restore now that you're using the same recovery that backed it up .
Crap like this is why we need an unlocked bootloader, or even just a place to hide a custom recovery -- with every rom you flash, your recovery changes and bad things can\have happened. While its nowhere as bad as it once was, problems like yours still occur from time to time. Its the same reason that there's so many posts with people having problems from using BandroidX Recovery -- its a very old CWM based recovery that uses different formats than whats used now (can't even install newer roms with it). Old and new don't usually play nicely with us .

Yeah, i tried to restore backup using cm10 recovery and although it said cant restore .android.secure something like that(iam not quite sure) it restored system as well as data.
The thing is i like mokee os .its speed, clean and clear... ecetra but it is not jelly bean.can't we have a cm10 tweaked and modified for bravo.of course I love your PA jelly bean there are lots of tablet tweaks can you also add some other functions like in pimp my rom.
And thanks man for answering my queries

[Q] TWRP 2.6.0.0 RECOVERY-- SGH-I337 AT&T Galaxy S4 16 GB

Hello!
I rebooted into TWRP recovery to make a backup and flash a new ROM today...
I happened to notice that my Data partition showed 1432346 MB (1398 GB)
I proceeded to swipe to backup anyways but it failed.. saying the data partition was to big.
There is 9 / 64 gigs used on the external SD card and 4.2 used on the internal SD card...definitely not 1398.
Anyone else have this issue ?

Yes, i just had the same issue. My data partition was listed as 32GB which is impossible. I am using the 16GB model and my SD card is 16GB as well.
Because of this, I'm unable to make any backups. This has to be a common error, anyone else??

Thanks for the link but I was getting this error originally with 2.5.0.2
I flashed to 2.6.0.0 which I thought would fix the error, but it still remains

What rom and kernel have you guys flashed. Did the bad position information start after flashing the rom? My inclination would be to odin back to stock to clear the partitions. Then use twrp 2.5.0.2 or cwm.
Edit, as a first step why don't you flash cwm and see if that clears up the partitions.
I had the exact same issue.. Were you by any chance using SlimRom? I did a full wipe, and kept trying different things to try to figure out the issue, and finally found that I had the huge amount of data storage with SlimRom only AFTER flashing their minimal GApps. Tried it with CWM as well as TWRP 2.5 and 2.6. I flashed the rom first, booted up, checked storage space and it showed I had most all my storage available. I rebooted to recovery, flashed their GApps, rebooted, then it showed I had only 800mb of space left and that was before restoring any apps through TiBu. That was with their Beta 2, 3 and 4 version of 4.3. I haven't tried Beta 5 yet. I switched over to BeanStalk rom, and haven't had the issue.
If you were using a different rom, of course it could be another issue.

I was using CWM before and never had any issues with it, but the root method I used http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2297900 installed TWRP together with SuperSU as the default. I was assuming if I flashed CWM that I would lose my root. True or false?

False, you can flash cwm over twrp without a problem
Ok I flashed to CWM and backups work fine. Not sure what the deal was, but this would be the solution if you are having this error within TWRP

I used a CM 10.1 nightly at end of august, think this was like the 26th or 28th. Later on reflashed to my stock rooted/custom recovery touchwiz backup. Week or so later I wanted to start using Carbon ROM, went to make a backup and thats when I noticed the partition size.
I tried to flash CWM through ROM Toolbox Pro...went into ROM Management...then slid over to Management, and "Flash Recovery". I tried both regular and touch but when I rebooted it was still TWRP 2.6.0.0. Is there a different way I should be going about this?
Secondly jd1639, I went to the link you provided and have downloaded the 2.5.0.2 TWRP zip...How can I reflash 2.5.0.2 over the current TWRP 2.6.0.0 instead of going to CWM...or will I have to odin back to true stock with no root or recovery and do it over again?
Thanks

Not sure whats hapening cause it shows TWRP, CWR v 6.0.3.2, CWR Touch v 6.0.3.2 as latest recoveries, but i have never used CWM.
It says successfull install whenever i touch either files name but after reboot it still boots into TWRP and still shows 1398 gigs for the data partition when i go into backup.

[Q] Cannot Install Custom Rom On i9505, Help Please?

Hi,
I am pretty new to custom roms ect, I have tried installing Battery King v8.2, Vision X II, Carbon Nightly and Google Edition. All of those roms are compatible with i9505, I have also tried using both recoveries CWM 6.0.3.1 and TWRP 2.6.3.1 and on each i wiped data, cache, dalvik, battery stats and system, then after each rom installed successfuly i wiped the dalvik cache again and rebooted to find the stock rom (Prerooted).
Any advice to what i am doing wrong?
I am currently downloading the official stock rom for my phone now to see if that makes a difference.

I had the same, I forgot to flash a custom recovery. Samsung's stock recovery will only flash/install Samsung signed ROMS. Flash a custom recovery like CWM, TWRP or Philz (I'm using philz). Then boot into your recovery and flash your ROMS.
If you have done that, ensure the MD5 of your ROM is correct.

Ok, just checking the basics first, I made that mistake, TWRP didn't flash correctly and I was on stock recovery!
the MD5 is a unique code attributed to the file. It will be given with the download and look something like (as an example only) 1565fs15f1s65f1w8e1wf8f1sw When you download the file you can run a program (have a look, loads free for PC and the phone) that will generate an MD5 sum also, the two should match, if not your download corrupted (this happens me a lot).
Hmmm. What error are you getting, what exactly happens in the recovery when you flash the zip?

Cool, best of luck with it. I'm not too familiar with doing this on the S4 but got it all working last night. If I'm not full of ideas there's many, many poeple on this forum who know their stuff back to front who will get you sorted!
Any errors you encounter note them down! Make backups!! Then backup your backup on the PC!
FIXED
Just to update, it finally worked. Before i flashed the custom rom i installed the latest official firmware which was 4.3 from sam mobile, then before flash i went onto CWM and did the following:
format cache system and data x 2
wiped cache partition
wiped dalvik cache
rebooted recovery
formated cache system and data
rebooted recovery
installed from sd card
then wiped data/factory reset then rebooted
Awesome! Enjoy your new ROM!

[Q] Custom Recovery (TWRP) + Phone Encryption = No good?

Hey guys, I've been having some issues with my AT&T S 4; I'm on KANGAKAT 6.0 (4.4.2), and I recently had to enable phone encryption on my phone for work, so that I could sync my work data to my phone.
Everything has been working fine and dandy until I found out there was a new version of my ROM, and new modems as well. I booted into recovery (TWRP), only to find out that while in recovery, TWRP does not have access to my internal memory since it is encrypted; it always fails to mount the internal storage. I tried updating to the latest TWRP, but it still does not work. I google'd around and apparently your recovery is supposed to ask you for the encryption key, but mine never does.
I wanted to try PhilZ custom recovery or ClockworkMod, but I have not found a Loki'd .img file I could install via Terminal, I've only seen flash methods, which I can't use since I can't use my recovery to write to my phone. I'm going to keep looking, but if anyone has a link to a recovery file I could manually install, that would be greatly appreciated.
Am I doing something wrong, or am I on the correct path to try to find a working recovery?
Edit:
Ok, so after more digging, it seems that I was wrong, recoveries can NOT mount an encrypted /data partition, ever. I was able to succesfully get PhilZ recovery installed, and it too was unable to mount /data. However my /system partition was able to be mounted, so I guess that's kind of what I wanted, I'll miss being able to make nandroid backups though. Hopefully I can update my modem without any problems.
Just like the recovery, the modem also gets flashed to a separate space. So, you should be able to update it without problem.

Yep, I just finished flashing the modem and it worked fine with PhilZ =). For some reason it wouldn't work with TWRP.
I guess the only question remaining now is can I update my ROM?
