I have an opportunity to buy a Nexus4 16gb locally on craigslist for $400 which is the same price as my Google order that won't come in for another 5 weeks. The seller appears to be legit after getting his name and googling his name. The phone is in the original box with the Google seal stickers on untouched. I asked if I could open and put my SIM card to make a test call but, he stated no since it would devalue the phone if I decided not to buy, which I understood. I asked for his receipt but, he said all I needed for warranty issues was the imei number on the phone.
Please point out anything else I need to be looking/asking for as I will be picking it up tomorrow at 7pm cst based on feedback from all the awesome members in this forum.

1. Great price, but I would be suspicious on his reasoning on selling it for $400, not much profit to gain (if at all).
2. Googling his name? What does this have to do with anything? Does he own a company or something? This part makes no sense to me.
3. Google seal stickers... very easy to reseal it with black tape.
4. There wouldn't be any devaluing if you were to test the device with a SIM card. This is bs IMO. The only devalue would be if it was truly sealed and then which I can believe him.
5. I'm not sure about the receipt and warranty but depending on when he bought it. Google Play gives you 12 days for a RMA with them before you take it to the manufacturer. I would take the receipt though, as he can easily just report the IMEI and then you get screwed in the end or something.

3. Google seal stickers... very easy to reseal it with black tape. I will have to inspect case and stickers when I go to buy it. If looks suspicious, will pass.

. Will ask for receipt for your reason mentioned.
See my answers above. Thanks for your input.
You can make a deal like, Open it and I will test a call and if works I take it otherwise wont. So opening it and not taking it is not an option
Yeah if he won't let you test it **** it. You can't find the phone anywhere opening the box will hardly devalue it at all, if even. Also you should try and get the receipt because AFAIK you need more than just an IMEI for the warranty.

I would not even consider buying it if you cannot test the phone. The phone might not even be in there for all you know.
THANKS to everyone who responded to my inquiry. Got back a little while ago with the new Nexus4. It is Beauty and the Beast. Already put the case on it and now downloading my apps. The seller was on the up and up, was able to test by making a call, go over the entire phone specially the front and back glass.
Now I get to sit and play with the new toy this weekend. Got to cancel my Dec 8th order and help someone else get theirs quicker.

Congrats. Glad it all worked out and nothing suspicious happened. Happy to hear that the seller changed his mind and let you test it.
I would research the S/N from the box with Google to see if it is stolen. Also if you buy it be sure to get a receipt from the seller to show you bought it and how much you paid.
I bought one from kijjiji $550.00 BNIB 16 Gb Didn't even put a sim in. Broke the seal looked at it that's it.. But I also got a receipt First thing called google had the warranty changed into my name they checked the imei and it was legit :good:
I suggest you get a receipt it has his name on it..
BTW he ordered nov 27 got it on the 29 I bought it dec 16..
Only problem is that only the original buyer can return the device to Google for an exchange if a problem occurs. And they do keep track of who bought them so without the original receipt your only option for the warranty is through LG. What LG does is have you send the phone back to them for repairs which can take a couple weeks and in teh meantime you have no phone. This has been discussed a number of times in several threads already as a few unlucky craigslist buyers found out when they wanted to do an exchange for a defective device.

No worries, I have his original receipt and google all is well with the imei and receipt for any warranty issues. Love this Beauty and the Beast phone.

I have a 2014 Moto X, 16 GB with the bamboo back, on Verizon. The back is peeling off, and I've just finished speaking with Motorola.
I didn't buy the device - it was traded. Despite the fact that I have the box, the IMEI, and everything except the original order information, they refuse to help me. If I had the order info, I'd be well on my way to a new one, but without it, they're happy to leave me completely swinging by myself.
So if you're thinking about buying one used, or giving one as a gift... I wouldn't recommend it. They don't care, and couldn't be bothered to try and find a solution. Last motorola product I'll ever buy.
Not exactly Motorola's fault.
In what way? Tell me of another company that doesn't honor their warranty if you gift a device. It's not like I don't have the serial number, IMEI, and every other bit of info for the thing. Every other company on the planet uses serial numbers for warranties. It shouldn't matter who owns the device or if they kept their receipt. This isn't a pair of headphones from Best Buy, here.
Not only that, but it's a 2014. It can only be so old. It's not like this might somehow be out of warranty.
most if not all items for electronics.... from my past experience that the warranty is only for the original purchaser, its usually in the warranty policy, I buy and sell a lot of used phones, and I know that`s the chance I take of buying used.

MOTOROLA MOBILITY INC.
LIMITED GLOBAL WARRANTY
MOBILE PHONES
FOR CONSUMERS WHO ARE COVERED BY CONSUMER PROTECTION LAWS OR
REGULATIONS IN THEIR COUNTRY OF PURCHASE OR, IF DIFFERENT, THEIR COUNTRY OF
RESIDENCE, THE BENEFITS CONFERRED BY THIS LIMITED WARRANTY ARE IN ADDITION
TO ALL RIGHTS AND REMEDIES CONVEYED BY SUCH CONSUMER PROTECTION LAWS
AND REGULATIONS.
Who is Covered?
This Limited Warranty extends only to the first consumer purchaser of the Product, and is not transferable.
It sucks, but I have never owned an electronic device where the warranty extends to the second hand market
You say it is the last Motorola phone you will ever buy, perhaps a wiser choice would be to make this the last second hand phone you ever buy.
...
Can you not glue the back?
At the minimum you could send it in and they can reglue it or replace the back cover. It will cost you but it's better than nothing. You might be able to negotiate a deal.
You never get warranty coverage without proof of purchase, it's basically Warranty 101. My advice would be to contact the original seller and ask them if they can do a warranty return for you.
I have never heard of a company that warrants an item with no proof of purchase. Even with proof of purchase, the warranty on most consumer goods is not transferable.
Factory warranties on cars is the only case I can think of where they don't care about proof of purchase (because they already know when it was purchased).
One thing to keep in mind is that sometimes your experience will vary from rep to rep.
And also your attitude going into it is important as well.
I have a friend that gets no help ANYWHERE, and it's because of the manner in which he speaks. He's not outright rude, but he's a bit socially inept, so he comes off very abrasive. You can hear kindness. People like to help nice people.

The micro USB port on my black 16gb X broke. I took it to my local brick & mortar Verizon store and they ordered a replacement device, no questions asked. They never asked to see any paperwork.
It sounds like you've got nothing to loose by trying the same thing?

Ask the seller for the info. I think it's good Motorola doesn't accept warranty without this information because thiefs will not have this info, only people who honestly bought it...
(btw it's very stupid for a company to not honor warranty, within the normal warranty period, for owners after the first owner because this severly impacts resell price and thus selling price)
You are correct.
Apple don't need proof of purchase for warranty, they have their own database based on IMEI/SN.
So if you purchase iPhone from Craigslist and it is still under warranty, Apple will still honor the warranty.
No Android OEM has this kind of customer service, not HTC/Motorola/Samsung/Google as far as I know.
I have read reports from some folks who successfully applied a small amount of glue under the peeled up wood, might be worth a try

My Nexus S that I bought used off eBay needed a screen replacement, and Samsung did so - no questions asked. Great experience. I haven't had to deal with an OEM for warranty since.

You can either remove the whole back and re glue it or just use a very fine felt brush to apply glue to the edge of wood. Worked for me. Sent mine back because a different corner peeled. @dg4prez
Fix it your self, It does suck they wont honor a product under warranty.
I know a lot of companies who follow this rule but there are many companies who don't.
I always try and buy product from companies who have exceptional customer service and warranties, its worth it, even if you pay a little more.
I bought a Moto X for a friend of mine, my card, my email, my delivery address. He broke his screen a week later, he called them up and they asked him to send it in, charged him $120 for a new screen and sent him back a new phone, he never needes the order number or anything.
Last week i tore the leather on my moto x, called motorola, they asked for order number, email, address, charged me $25 and sent me a new phone and i will be sending back the one that has the torn back.
Guess it depends on who you speak with.
Also, as was mentioned earlier Apple warranties extend to any owner of the phone, since their proof of purchase comes up when the IMEI/SN is entered (you can even check warranty status on their website)
Only company that got close to this is samsung, i used to work in a cellphone shop and wed brick ALOT of phones testing things out, including note 3, s5 etc and samsung out always unbrick them for free even though we were not the original buyers.

That rule definitely would't survive here in Europe. No matter either written or not. It's against consumer protection regulations. And what is even more weird is that the provision is in direct conflict with freedom of contract principle. Neither state nor any third party could interfere with the contract without clear legal basis. Warranty refers to the sold good not to the person who bought it.

Companies warranty to the original purchaser except if it is a gift. Did you register the device with them or did the original purchaser?
Hi everyone,
So I have read a ton of conflicting information on insurance for the Nexus 6p ( only looking at Square Trade and Asurion not Nexus Protect)
So here are my questions if anyone that has actually made a claim with Asurion or Square Trade (most interested in Square trade at this point) please let me know, thanks!!
1- If a claim is made with Square trade and the phone is not repairable, do they have Nexus 6p's as replacements? Or is it going to be like Asurion where they will send you a "like" device?
2- If the phone is repairable through Square trade, do they support repairs for this device? Or will they just send me a monetary value?
3- Is it confirmed that Asurion will in fact drop your insurance (Verizon) if you activate the Nexus 6p on your line? (I have not activated it on Verizon yet, using google fi right now, I know they have a protection plan but I will be using this plan only when I run out of minutes on Verizon line, grandfathered in so not going to be able to use google fi insurance either)
I have Asurion on my line, I want to purchase Square Trade for my Nexus 6P since Asurion will not replace it if necessary but I want to make sure that Square Trade will fix my device if I need it to be fixed or replace with a Nexus 6P. Thanks everyone!!
(Nexus Protect is not an option for me, I purchased on Swappa but since I have Asurion I can submit for Square Trade)
The one time I ever had to use my SquareTrade warranties they actually gifted me the money to buy a new item. This was not for a phone so that may be different.
I have had both and have filed. Claims through both. For both my Nexus 5 and my Nexus 6 I was either able to send the phone in for repair or fix locally and send in the reciept for a full refund of the price of the repairs. In the case of the Nexus 6 screen I had to send it in due to the screen being so new that my local repair shop couldn't get a screen in stock. (Ran over by several cars). Square trade ended up sending me another phone as mine wasn't repairable. My Nexus 5 was also sent to Square trade and was sent back a new phone as the board where the charging port connected to was damaged along with a bad screen. Both times phones had custom RoMs on them and yet they were totally painless experiences and I would highly recommend them. I went with Nexus protect on my 6P and I am hoping I didn't make a mistake doing so. I can't answer the Asurion question as the times I have had Asurion, I was insuring phones purchased through my provider.

It should be noted that both phones were refurbished units however all the phones you get from Asurion will also be refurbished units so if this is a issue then you might want to research other options. I personally have only had one issue out of 8 refurbished phones so I'm not one to complain like many users.

I actually work for Verizon and I can confirm that Asurion sends refurbished devices. It's a fairly simple process. However, Verizon's policy towards non-Verizon devices is that the insurance would not cover it. The device has to be purchased from Verizon or an authorized retailer. One other thing is that when you switch over the device (usually by switching the sim card from another device) the insurance would stay on your line and you would continue to be billed for it (Seriously -_-). So you would have to take it off of your line either by calling, stopping into a store, or by going into your My Verizon account and managing the features on your line.
One other thing to note is that once you remove the insurance from your line, you cannot add it back unless it's an open enrollment period and you meet the requirements or you purchase a new device on that line.

That is my overall goal in this situation, I just want to keep asurion and get square trade for the Nexus 6p as Asurion does not cover it. Thanks!!!

Hmm.
I have bought devices from third parties and they were covered for warranty and theft.
I've filed both types of claims on devices that I ddid not buy from Verizon.
Could be that since they were Verizon branded, it didn't matter.

That should work. I don't want to guarantee anything as far as the Note 5 but as long as that device is the active device on your line at the time of the claim. Asurion's website might not let you make a claim if you just switch over the device (I've never tried it so I couldn't tell you) so you might just have to call insead.
Glad I could help!

Like you said, those devices would have been Verizon branded. In this case the Nexus 6p isn't Verizon branded. It's technically not even certified to work with Verizon's network by Verizon...

With Asurion it seems like it's hit or miss with whether or not it's a new phone or a refurb. I've seen both ways. It also depends on how new to the market the phone you're claiming is. For example, my mom dropped her brand new iPhone 6S in the toilet the day after she got it (*facepalm* -_-, it's actually quite a funny story tbh) and Asurion sent a brand new phone still in the original packaging because at this point the 6S had only been out for a month or something like that when she got it so Asurion hadn't had any refubs to send out.

The only way that I know how to do this is if you have asurion on your line already.
Some say they will drop you, some say they won't so I don't know for sure as I have not gone ahead with the Square Trade warranty yet, (waiting to see if I can find a coupon code or a sale).
What I did since I have coverage on my line was requested a letter from Asurion stating that I am covered for my line (asurion covers the line so whatever device you have on there is what is covered at the time, that's what they told me). My plan is when I am ready to use Squaretrade to submit my coverage letter to them and let them know what my phone has current coverage. I have put my sim in the Nexus 6P and I switch between phones. As per one of the last comments, I would have to call Asurion to cancel my coverage, (which I don't want to do because I want to keep it for my other phone on my line.). When I looked at my plan, I saw that coverage was till there however, I mainly use my note 5 so that is the phone that is more often on the line. So now I just have to work on the Square Trade side of this so I can get coverage for my Nexus 6P as Asurion does not cover this device. I did speak with Squretrade about this and they said that a letter showing proof of insurance from your insurance company is valid which is what I got from Asurion.
Hope this helps.

I’m not sure if this applies to me then. I’m on T-Mobile and don’t purchase insurance. I did purchase Square trade for my note 4 but it was new from T-Mobile. I emailed them just in case but not sure if they cover used devices. Anyone know if they cover new devices sold on Swappa? Would I just send the PayPal Invoice? From the contract from my note 4 I got this extract so wondering if they do covered used devices. Hopefully I wouldn’t have to wait and use the manufacturer warranty before I could use SquareTrade.
Excerpt: HOW LONG OUR COVERAGE LASTS:
• If your item is NEW, this Protection Plan begins on the day you purchased the item, and lasts for the number of years you chose at purchase time.
• If your item is USED/REFURBISHED, this Protection Plan begins on the 31st day after your item purchase or after your manufacturer's warranty expires, whichever is longer. The agreement also lasts for the number of years you chose at purchase time.

You can normally get them from someone that has Squaretrade.

Amazon is apparently offering customers who bought Note7 accessories a full refund even if they’re outside the normal 30-day return window.
Someone was asking about this. FYI

Amazon may, but I'm unsure if third party sellers on Amazon will do it too, which is where all my cases come from. Upon filling in the form, it says it needs to get approval from the seller. I could call Amazon, but they wont be able to dictate what third party sellers have to do when it's outside the window.

Third parties won't. I just tried and all sellers are refusing.
Also, in related information, if you bought any Spigen accessories directly through their site, they aren't taking them back either. I contacted them Wednesday and they refused. They gave a useless 20% off one item coupon though. Because, you know, I want to spend MORE money on all this mess.
I'm now contacting Samsung directly because at this point, I feel it's all their fault. I would never have bought accessories if I had known this would happen. Now, if I were returning the phone because I didn't like it or something like that (a voluntary return/exchange that was MY decision), then I'd take the hit. I mean, I can't even sell these cases now!
(I have 5 cases. I bought a few in order to swap them out or to have spares.)

Let us know how it goes. I have 7 cases (me and my wife together, but same situation, we like to swap them out) from various sellers and would like to have at least part of it back.

Yeah, sure. I'll keep you all updated.
Not to be negative, but I feel like it's a long shot though.
No reply as of yet. Maybe by Monday.

OK, well, I got an update. Samsung is refusing responsibility for 3rd party accessories, so I am now about $200 in the hole.
All I can say is that I REALLY hope a class action lawsuit comes out, because I'll be jumping on it like crazy in order to try and recover at least SOME of my loss. I was also considering getting a Note8 (or whatever it'll be called), but now, it has to not only be a good phone, but will need to brush my teeth, brush my hair, and wipe my butt in order to make me consider it. It's a shame because I loved the Note7, but they shouldn't be screwing their customers over like this, ESPECIALLY since it's their fault.
I'm going to try one last time with the phone number provided in the email, but from what it sounds like, this will do nothing.

Another Update:
I called the number given in the email and ended up coming out of the call with even more frustration, but also some potentially good news, though we should all take it with a grain of salt.
First, I called the number and the girl on the other line said I need to power down my Note7. I told her that I can't because it's my ONLY phone (I don't even have a landline), and I have to wait until I can buy a replacement. She just said, "I understand, but because your safety is our concern... [blah blah blah]... you need to power down your phone."
So I repeated that this was my only phone and that I don't have a spare. Again, she repeated the "safety is our concern" line. So I added, "Ma'am, if I power down my phone, then that would mean that I will be without a phone completely until I can get a replacement. That means that if I have to call 911 in the case that I have an emergency, then I won't be able to do so, and I could potentially DIE."
This time she hesitated... then repeated the same line again. It sounded like she was reading a script too (which she most likely was, unfortunately).
Finally, I just said, "Well, I'm not powering down my phone until I can buy the LG V20."
She stopped LOL
So then she transferred me to another phone number, but was kind enough to give me the number in case I got disconnected. So she transferred me and I waited. And waited. And waited. After 1 hour and 10 minutes on hold, I just hung up and tried calling again. All I got was a message saying that the phone was not available and to try again later.
At this point, I'm obviously frustrated, so I call the first number again and this is where the good news with a grain of salt comes in. The lady said that there will be an addition to the Note7 recall, which will state what to do about accessories (though she didn't confirm whether it was for accessories bought through third parties). She could not give me a 'when' this would happen though. I tried pressing more details from her by trying to get a time frame for this addition (ex: within the next 1-2 months), but she would not give me anything, meaning that she really didn't know, or that she wasn't supposed to say.
So, at this point, I'm just going to wait until either a class-action lawsuit occurs, or this addition to the Note7 recall policy becomes live. I'm obviously not happy at the moment because as of right now, I'm still at a loss until something else happens, which is still only a possibility rather than a certainty.
EDIT: Oh, and II only say to take that info with a grain of salt only because it isn't 100% confirmed at the moment. I would definitely expect Samsung to do that addition to the recall because that will help them avoid a class-action lawsuit. It's just that if they do do something, they need to do something reasonable... not something like offer only 20% of each accessory's cost. I mean, at the moment, this $25 credit whether you keep using a Samsung device or go to another brand is bull. That's lunch money and doesn't cover all the time wasted on this mess (IMO).
Well seems I was partially lucky with Amazon's third party sellers, but I am unsure if that is because the items they allow me to trade are 1, still within the normal return window, 2, are OEM covers, or 3, they just have great customer service. The other ones (Spigen and VRS Design) were out of the window so I just let them be.. They may have allowed me to return them, but chances are slim.. I know I wouldn't if I was a seller.
i was able to return all of the items i bought for note 7. I had to do a chat and she gave me the link for my return label. 2 case and 1 usb c cable.

My Verizon 10 has formed a yellow band on the right side of the screen. I would like to send it in for repair, but I bought the phone second hand and am not using it on the verizon network.
1) Would Verizon accept my warranty claim without a receipt or VZW account?
2) Would HTC repair it under warranty as if I bought it from them?
3) if the answer to 2) is no, would HTC repair it at a cost, and does anyone know how much a screen replacement costs?
Getting in touch with the original owner is not possible either. Any help would be appreciated!
Update: Just finished speaking with htc, they will accept my warranty claim directly! Hope they don't surprise me with a cost quote now!
Verizon won't do anything for you. The only way they would is if you are the original purchaser, in which case they will replace the device if it's within the manufacturer's 1 year warranty. HTC *might* do something for you, but I'm not too knowledgeable on their warranty policy. There's a good chance they will restrict warranty service to the original purchaser, or tell you that since it's a Verizon phone, you'll have to go through them. HTC does offer a one-time "uh-oh" protection, but that's limited to people who purchased their phone through HTC.com.
You can try it yourself, the digitizer runs around $70 on eBay, but it isn't a simple repair. Otherwise, most screen repair services charge in the $150-$200 range.
Here's the HTC warranty information. It looks like you'll want to have the phone 100% stock with locked bootloader and s-on. http://dl4.htc.com/Web_materials/Ma...evA.PDF?_ga=1.178459428.1435750642.1485623721
From the Warranty disclosure:
"A copy of the original invoice, receipt or bill of sale for the purchase of the Product or Accessory. You
must present a valid proof of purchase upon making any claims pursuant to this Limited Warranty. If no valid proof of purchase is supplied and the Product or Accessory was manufactured more than fifteen (15) months prior to the date the claim is made, HTC has no obligation to provide support under the Limited Warranty."

Thanks, everything that you said is about what I was expecting myself. But htc surprised me by accepting it as an in-warranty claim. We'll see how it goes.

That's good to hear. I'd wager it's because the date of manufacture is well within the 12 months, since I don't think the HTC 10 has even been out a year. It says a lot about a company that they're honoring their warranty when, technically, the don't have to.
That's awesome and it definitely says a lot about what type of company HTC is. They have been my go to for years and I'm so happy to continue backing them when they make business decisions like these.

True, I was also impressed when I had my m7 and they offered to fix my purple-tinted camera for free way after the warranty was over (I didn't go for it because they said I would absolutely have to pay to fix my screen at the same time even though I didn't want to). But I've also heard bad things about their customer service (for example at the launch of the 10). This is my first time dealing with a warranty claim with HTC so I'll cross my fingers it goes well.
Update for anyone in a similar situation: HTC replaced the screen and shipped the phone back to me from Texas to Montreal, Canada overnight at no charge. The whole process including my own shipping took only 8 days, pretty impressive. And not a single dent/scratch or other trace of the repair. Very impressed with this service.
Only downside is having to pay 40$ shipping with insurance for a faulty device, but considering I didn't have a receipt I won't complain too much here!
