[Q] Possible to restore knox? - Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is it possible to restore knox thats been disabled due to rooting by flashing stock firmware on? i keep getting mixed messages as to the possibility of this and id like to have a solid answer on this.

What do you mean restore it? Why do you want it?

^He probably meant to restore Knox count to "0".

Defintely NO. By rooting the device, a little fuse is breaking. That can only restore by Service to change that fuse.

Samsung KNOX - a warning for the leaked 4.3 roms...

Just been through training for KNOX at work - and without blowing my NDA's - i'll pass on this for you all
If you EVER want to use KNOX - and you run one of the leaked 4.3 roms - NEVER NEVER NEVER flash any custom binaries to the phone again - you can only EVER run an offical untouched rom.
If you ARE running a 4.3 rom - reboot your phone into odin mode and see if you have a KNOX warrenty bit set to 0x0.
if you do - and you EVER want to use KNOX (and after training - im going to be using it meself) - you now can not roll back - or install a custom kernel or pretty much anything apart from further factory roms.
If you install anything else - the KNOX and TIMA systems will blow a fuse on the motherboard of your note2 and you will get flagged with KNOX warrenty bit 0x1.
This is not reversable - ever - without a board replacment.
The only effect will be that you cannot ever run KNOX after this - private or enterprise versions.
The first leaked 4.3 rom didnt have this enabled - the second one did (UEMJ5).
This is enforced in the bootloaders - once you get it - you cant go back.
If you dont care about KNOX - go hard However if your are going to use a BYOD type setup at your work and they want to enforce KNOX and youve blown the fuse in the motherboard - to be blunt - you are screwed Its not reversable sorry.
If you dont know what KNOX is actually about (if youve read "Little Brother" by Cory Doctorow think phone inside a phone type things) check out https://support.samsungknox.com/home and have a chew through it - there are some very good parts to it....
In any case - if you dont care about KNOX - go hard - nothing has changed.
If you DO care about KNOX - your not going to be able to change the firmware on your phone at all ever - if you do you will lose permanently the ability to run KNOX.
if you want to use your phone for work and work wants KNOX and your a custom rom person - your ****outaluck =)
And KNOX is not just the apk's..... its the entire stack from bootloaders upwards....

I didn't think the Note 2 has the eFuse on its motherboard?
I'm running Hurricane ROM and it hasn't got any KNOX and the new bootloader stuff. I think this problem is with the "original" (leaked) 4.3 ROM
On the one hand I object to this kind of control by Samsung, it's my phone and I resent them wanting to control it.
On the other, I understand that many businesses don't want their staff using their network connections or accessing their data without protection and separation.
I do my best to not use my phone at all for my employers's business, but if they wanted me to and told me knox was obligatory then I would tell them they would have to provide a mobile device for me to use as I would tell them I could/wouldn't be able to promise that I wouldn't lose knox due to custom roms.

Backporting and using a fuse that hasnt been exposed or used previously - apparently there are unused fuses in the system there
in reply to Chris189 "I'm running Hurricane ROM and it hasn't got any KNOX and the new bootloader stuff. I think this problem is with the "original" (leaked) 4.3 ROM "
the original didnt give me the fuse setting - the new rom did give me the fuse setting
im curious to find out if a samsung signed rom with knox disabled will allow a rollback offically - but i dont think your going to get any leaking like that.
And from 2k14 going forward - all samsung devices will be running this
also take note of the "SELinux" permissive / enforced state..... enforced may break some apps....
anyways - back to work - "hoo...ray"

From what the Samsung trainers were saying - once KNOX is on there and has that KNOX warrenty bit available (can be seen from odin mode on the phone - power , vol down and home when booting) a rollback will blow the fuse even to a factory rom - not really willing to try it on my note 2 to confirm sorry
Should have said... any idea of rooting 4.3 by whatever method invalidate this KNOX thing.
Had a feeling that most rooting involve flashing at least a insecure bootloader for it to work?

Not applicable to Note2. This isn't the S4/Note3.

I don't know why Samsung implemented this stupid thing for Note2, maybe we can have 4.3 month earlier without this totally uselles ****, or have 4.3 with useful Note 3 things....do anyone know which manager decided about this ****?

Did you have your IMEI when you flashed back? May have needed to restore your EFS? Or reflash the original modem?
To put the Knox worries aside, I did the following test.
Install newest leak (MJ5) bootloader (with knox). Warranty bit was 0.
Installed MI6 and installed knox which worked. Warranty bit was 0.
Flashed CWM recovery from Odin, suprisingly knox was still working. Warranty bit was still 0. Binary flash counter increased
Restored CM10.2 Nandroid backup. Warranty bit was still 0
So it seems that with the MJ5 bootloader, no knox fuse is being blown and you are able to rollback to a previous version without issues (if you have backed up EFS when you want to go back from 4.3 -> 4.1).

if u want to go back to 4.1.2 u need newer builds which have the new EFS changes ( older builds will show fake IMEI if u don't have backup from the old EFS )
Mj5 bootloader can easily be downgraded to the previous bootloader without any issues

If you took the OTA update to 4.3, then yes you are on the Knox bootloader. AND you are stock unrooted (unless you've since rooted).
Yes it's safe to post a pic of you system config; there is nothing anyone can take from that information that is harmful to you.
Is this a clean knox? Or is it already tripped.

Isn't it the custom recovery that ends up tripping the Knox anyways?

Yes, custom recovery will trip Knox.
1. My phone was previously rooted,
2. Got 4.3 update
3. Now has a clean knox
My questions are
A. can I root my phone again?
B. Will later android updates give me another clean knox?
C. Are any procedures like triangle away that will keep knox clean?
D. Is warranty the only reason I want a clean knox?

A. Yes you can, if you don't want the Knox warranty flag use Safe Root. If you google safe root for S4 you should find the link. The Knox flag is actually tripped when you install a custom recovery. This means if you use cf autoroot, twrp, philz, or any other root or recovery the Knox flag will be tripped. If you want to install a custom rom or mod, then you will trip the Knox flag since those require a custom recovery. If you just want to root and remove bloat, backup with TiBu, install xposed framework modules, or even unlock the hotspot then you can do those without a custom recovery and keep your Knox warranty flag in place.
B. No, once you have tripped the Knox warranty flag, so far the flag is not reset by installing updates or the full stock tar file of a newer version.
C. Not at his time.
D. Yes, at this time the only thing the Knox warranty flag does is show Samsung that your device has been tampered with at one time. Sprint and Assurian still honor the TEP insurance, but if your phone has to be sent to Samsung for repair or warranty that is where you will have problems.

Mostlikely YES.
My brother's device had problems with some of their corporate apps (email/portal stuff) designed to look for ROOT and othe security (knox I bet) changes. Is IT guys literally swapped out his phone after he rooted it!
Plus it seems that a whole lot of people are having issue connecting to PEAP WiFi networks; primarily, I'm guessing' Cisco based. [Cisco is notoriously behind the curve. Heck they have security devices (ASAs) that must be accessed with OLD java versions.]
But there ARE some solutions for that around here.

Hot spot is easy, run the safe root file from your pc to root your phone. Then download the odexed MK2 hot spot mod in post 337 in the hot spot mod thread. Use 7zip or similar app to extract the services.jar and services.odex file to your sdcard. Then use root explorer to copy them to the system/framework directory. It is a good idea to backup the original files. After you copy the new files you will need to change the permissions to rw-r-r. After this is done reboot and enjoy free hot spot. This will not trip knox since you don't have to install a custom recovery.

The problem occurs within the bootloader of the MJA or newer firmware. With that version of the software, Samsung has prevented the downgrading of the bootloader so there is no way to get rid if that feature. You can go through the rom and remove or disable the Knox files, which do nothing for the phone except free up some space. Knox's purpose is to allow Samsung to create a secure environment for corporate and government companies that need to protect their info and intellectual properties. The average user will never need Knox, so it's safe to remove. When Samsung fully implemented Knox with 4.3 they integrated it into the bootloader. Now, all of us assume the Knox warranty flag voids your Samsung warranty, which it probably does, but I believe its true purpose is to void the Knox integrity check so the Knox secure containers know the phone has been tampered with and can't guarantee data security.
Data security is big business and Samsung wants a piece of that pie.

[Q] General inquiry about KNOX and FW types

Hello all,
I searched the forums round and round, and couldn't find my answers so I hope you will be able to help me out.
i'm looking for a new phone and decided I want to go with the S5. that was before i learned about KNOX and it's wonderful ways.
i'm a heavy modder, who will most definitely use a custom recovery and ROM/kernel.
my questions are:
1. would it be possible to flash a custom recovery / rom / kernel / modem despite KNOX being preset?
2. other then getting this 0x1 and voiding my official warranty, are there any other result to this? will something not work?
3. assuming I get an unlocked international phone, is there any need to mess/change my FW? or is that just part of guides for rooting without tripping KNOX ?
Basically, I want to be sure that I could do whatever I want to the phone without getting stuck or turning it unusable because of KNOX. my current phone is a Nexus 4 and it has been heaven. I want to preserve this feeling
thanks for the help guys, appreciate it!
Did you tried Towelroot method for rooting your device? I heard that doesn't trigger knox..
I would imagine my rooting the phone is the least of my worries.
as far as I know - and this is one of my questions - flashing a custom recovery and or rom will 100% trip KNOX.
not that I care, I just need to know if this is true..and my other questions as well
thanks!

If you - as you say "i'm a heavy modder" Samsung phones are not for you
I've heard tales of people having issues flashing modems when knox is triggered. I have not checked that out for myself Joe have I searched any further into the matter.

This answer really worries me to be honest.
could you elaborate?
I don't really care about KNOX, and as long as I can mod away and jump back and forth between modems/roms/kernels - I don't care for the warranty.
If indeed there is truth in the matter, and modem flashing will become a problem if KNOX is tripped, then this would be a deal breaker for me on this phone.
anyone care to add more info here?

Exactly, but with full stock image flush (including bootloader). The full stock tar.md5 form sammobile includes the modem/bootloader/rom. I think that the important thing is to have a modem which is compatible with the bootloader (same version). Didn't try to mix different bootloader/modem(baseband) versions.
Tripping KNOX will only disable the feature which allows you to store some data on a encrypted part of the device (Mostly comercial use) when KNOX is tripped any data stored on the 'special' partition is destroyed.
So there are only 2 things that will be affected, your warranty (Not a problem in Europe) and the special partition that I explained earlier.

Root vs. Security

Hi there,
As far as I could read, we now have a stable kernel(arter97) and a deodexed rom for the G928G.
With security in mind, regarding the Edge+, I am starting to feel that if I root my device, I will have a lot more posibilities concerning getting it more secure. For example, I would be able to use a firewall, uninstall default apps and bloatware, just for starters.
Otoh, a rooted device might be less secure if you are not careful... but I read recently that new malware is capable of rooting android so, basically that defeats my entire argument about not rooting it.
From your experience, would I be able to use a rooted device with arter97 kernel and the deodexed ROM above (without bloatware) securely?
In your opinion, what additional steps should I take?
Would I be able to revert to a stock ROM / original state that would enable me to use samsung pay, or rooting is a one way trip?
Are there any additional features that rooting would disable besides samsung pay (I also have a Sony Z3 and rooting it would disable taking high quality pictures with the camera)?
Thanks in advance!
I thought those were tough questions at first, but not that much
Ten days later, I have found an answer for question 3. Right now, afaik there is no way around a tripped Knox and there are no guarantees that it will ever be or in a near future.
I am still looking for ways of getting a more secure platform.
Started thinking about the original idea (ROM and kernel suggested), using a firewall, a VPN and a service like adguard as a local proxy.
Any further ideas?
Thank in advance!

You will lose all Knox possibility. Samsung pay, and maybe some other thing. But I don't think you'll lose High Quality pictures.
Hope I answered you a bit .
Ok, so rooting = trip knox = disable (forever) all features that rely on it, like samsung pay.
One last question: let´s say I root it and use it rooted for some time. Will I be able to revert to a default samsung ROM even with KNOX void = 1? Once I get back to a default rom, will it update automatically or that will be broken?

Yes you can go back to a default ROM (ie not custom status) but with knox void by just flashing a stock ROM via Odin - once knox is tripped it is always tripped and you will NOT be able to use Samsung Pay and there is no reset for Knox (Know=1), there are other pay methods that might work and some work when rooted too

If you go on official samsung firmware I think you could have automatic update. I might say I never go back to samsung official rom when I installed custom rom, only when I sold my phone so I don't know if it update after lol.

LOL that´s exactly the reason behind my question... If I sell it some day at least make sure that updates are coming through...
The main reason I haven't rooted the phone is because of Samsung Pay, if you don't plan on utilizing it then by all means root the phone. And yes even if Knox is tripped you can still receive the updates, I have several rooted galaxy devices with Knox tripped and I still receive the updates. On a side note if you update a rooted phone you will most likely loose the root and have to re-root again.
Thank you! I guess the only drawback for me is a practical one. Every new update means that settings won't be preserved. Anyway I think I can live with that.

Oh... following the procedure to root, I have learned that flashing the ROM is not mandatory. In other words, you flash a custom recovery, arter97´s kernel, install SuperSU and that´s it...
At this stage, will automatic update work?
(of course, I understand that if it does, it would reverse to a non-rooted device and I would have to do it again)...
Does rooting reset / wipe the device to factory settings?

Yes, custom roms are mostly for added features but it is not mandatory.
Automatic Updates should work, and rooting/re-rooting does not wipe your phone.

Really?
It's very strange that behaviour!
Go to a repair center, Samsung, and ask for a solution.

Did you expect something else?
Opening the backdoor to your phone's software (rooting) and still preserving high-tech business security?
C'mon... that won't work!

Is there anyway to get back my knox files.
Once you root you lose knox. No way around it.

You would have to reinstall the stock firmware back onto your device.
You've broken KNOX now, even flashing stock firmware won't bring it back. Only Samsung can reset it.
