S Pen woes, 4.4.2 non-OTA - Verizon Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Has anyone else ran into S Pen issues? I started off like most with the rooted 4.4.2 (NC2), then went to the 1st or second issue of Rick's Rom. At first everything was going fine. Then one day my s pen stopped working. The phone doesn't register it at all. No air command when removing pen, no sounds, nothing. I did a factory reset, no good. I flashed back to the original 4.4.2 rom, re flashed the firmware, tried the hybrid NC2/NC4 firmware, nothing has worked. Now I'm on Hyperdrive with NC2 firmware. I thought maybe my S Pen was bad so I stopped by the Verizon store today. They were too busy to help me but I checked out the display model. It registered my pen just fine, so it is something with my phonw. Any ideas? I have TiBU Pro but nothing is currently frozen or removed. The only thing I haven't tried is flashing back to 4.3.

OK I loaded the pen reset app for the he'll of it and I get the message "Pen configuration file missing". Any idea where to get it or how to fix it?

Bump. Still looking for an idea how to fix this.

Anyone?

Past few days my pen has been giving me issues. A few weeks ago (not too long after taking the NC4 OTA) it didn't register the pen on the screen, but a reboot fixed it so I thought nothing of it. The past few days though, the phone is coming very close to going out the window I'm getting so aggravated. The thing is basically just a giant S4 now, if I didn't enjoy having the pen I'd go trade it for an S5.
Just for reference, I've never rooted the thing or ran custom roms. I got it in December and ran stock 4.3 until 4.4 was available OTA.
Took the OTA update at first and everything seemed fine until that first pen hiccup. In the past week, I have re-flashed NC4 from OTA once and Kies at least twice because my pen keeps "dying". I'm sitting here right now with the thing and it once again doesn't even detect when I remove the pen. I found clearing the cache helped when it was just not detecting it on the screen even after rebooting, but still saw me remove it from the phone, now that's not even helping. It doesn't register my deluxe s pen with the eraser either.
I've been searching all week for other's mentioning this issue, hoping there's a fix or it's a known NC4 bug, but this is the only mention of it I've come across.
EDIT:
Just found something interesting, the phone can detect the pen hovering above the screen. It seems to be registering it as a finger though because if you have Air View on, the pen only option for scrolling doesn't work.

I'm beginning to wonder if it's a hardware issue with the switch that detects when the pen is removed.
Sent from my SM-N900V using Tapatalk

Since I've gotten mine to start working again by performing cache wipes or resetting the phone to factory, I highly doubt it's a hardware issue. In my case anyways. Every time I would reset the phone to factory it would start working again, but not permanently.
In fact I did another cache wipe today, just because, and my pen is currently working again. I'm sure it won't be by tomorrow though. Something in the software has got to be bugging out, but I don't get any kind of crash notices or anything. It just stops working, that includes detecting if I remove/insert it.

I'll try another factory reset, although I doubt it will work for me. When I installed Baja ROM the other day it didn't work.
Sent from my SM-N900V using Tapatalk

Well mine has started acting up again this weekend. Cache wipes are proving to be useless now too. I really regret upgrading to 4.4 now to say the least.

Still no luck with mine. I'm tempted to tear it down and mess with the switch.
Tried installing S Pen power saving widget from market and I get a message of "pen configuration file missing" when I try to run it.
Sent from my SM-N900V using Tapatalk

Mine was working again there for a little while, but just now stopped while I was in the middle of using it. When that happened, the screen wouldn't even respond to touch input. Home and power buttons worked, but nothing touch/pen/hover based. Once I turned the screen off and then back on, I had touch/hover input again but not pen. Even though the "pen out" icon on the status bar was there still, and went away when I put the pen back in the phone. Doing so did not make the pen work again though.
I can't believe we seem to be the only ones having pen issues since kitkat.

One other symptom, I downloaded the Air Command Shortcut. When I tap the command to draw a window and open an app (with my finger since it doesn't detect the pen being removed), I get a window of app choices instead of it letting me draw a window.

[Q] Verizon G2 buggy touch screen?

Is anyone else having issues with the touch screen triggering at different places when touched, or randomly knocking off the phone when you're not even touching the phone? I turned off my knockon feature, but I would see my notification bar be highlighted without me touching it. Just wondering if i'm the only one with this problem.

this glitch is kinda what happened with mine, and i confirmed what it was doing
in swiftkey, you know how tehre's the option to change the long press delay? well i was holding down that little bar to drag it down, and i noticed while holding it inplace, the numbers were going crazy..it was going up/donw/up/down incredibly fast, instead of just staying stationary..i was like, wtf? so i went to dev options, turned on show touch points and the trace so i could see the axis, and i noticed it was freaking out. holding my finger in place, it was as if it was moving around like crazy.
so i did a factory reset and flashed the clean verizon rom scott posted, and it hasn't done it since. no idea wtf was going on. i realized it was messing up bc my typing became really bad, and it would enter things i didn't type.
Touch Screen has a mind of its own - bad digitizer??
I woke up today to find my screen on, showing the lock screen which I found odd. Now most of the time the screen has a mind of its own where basically its like an invisible finger is randomly touching the screen at a frantic place. This opens up apps, moves icons around, calls people if the phone app manages to get opened, etc. After struggling to override the "invisible finger" I've done a reboot from the power menu, powered off from the power menu and left it off for 10 minutes before turning off and held down the power and volume down button to reboot. None of these methods fixed the problem0
Please note I did accept the Verizon update but was good on it for a day prior to this issue. I have installed minimal 3rd party apps and can't attribute the problem to starting right after installing something. I do use the Ghost 100 wireless charger but have been using this from day 1 without issues so I don't think that'a problem either. The Verizon store sold me this charger and although its not listed as being compatible on Verizon's website I have a feeling that's cause the phone is so new. The charger is WPC certified. Being that this problem is intermittent (happens way more often than not) I think it may be a software issue and I'm about to do a hard factory reset. If that doesn't work then I'm convinced its a hardware issue and probably a bad digitizer. I've been very gentle with the phone - haven't dropped it, no moisture or water exposure, not rooted, etc. I'll report back if the factory reset works. Anyone else having the same or a similar issue?

You're not alone! My G2 has been driving me crazy the last couple of days when trying to use the lockscreen. It'll spaz out and either skip a connection of display a whole different pattern than I drew. It will also shut off the screen and reset the "wrong password" counter. I love this phone but this is super aggravating!
Hard reset didn't help at all. I went to a Verizon store and they exchanged for a new one and determined I had a hardware failure.

[Q] keyboard missing (not in pen mode)

hi, i have a galaxy note 2 currently running 4.1.1 and a friend of mine downgraded it from 4.1.2 and it didnt work properly so he reflashed it to at&t (originally telus) and then reflashed it back to telus. He was attempting to unlock it. Ever since then, whenever i open messages and attempt to type, the keyboard doesnt appear. there is nothing that appears at the bottom where the keyboard should be. its just black and its definitely not in pen mode. When i usually start the phone up, it says "unfortunately, Snote has stopped working". and then when i attempt to open the app for Snote, it says there isn't enough space. When i go to enter my wifi password on the other hand, the keyboard appears. please help as soon as possible. thanks.

[Q] Unresponsive Screen

Hello everyone, I am currently having a problem with my Note 3 from T-Mobile USA (White, 32GB) when the screen all of the sudden becomes unresponsive to finger touches and instead it picks up and selects/taps random objects on my homescreen, browser or whatever window/app I am using, but as soon as I take out the S-Pen it registers it flawlessly. That also happens when the S-Pen is already removed, same scenario, no finger touch response yet it works with the S-Pen. When it happens usually, I am not able scroll, select anything, and the capacitive buttons don't work either unless I lock the device and unlock it. Anyone else is having this problem? I did some research and apparently a lot of Galaxy devices does that.
send it back to the service centre....the s pen is being detected even when it is plug in. the screen is designed to not respond to touch when it detects the tip of the s pen.

Yup. I have the same problem. Used to happen about once a day. Called T-Mobile, talked to tech support (very nice) and they said it likely an incompatibility issue with an app I have. They said even though this is an android device, a lot of times apps have issues working on new devices. I uninstalled the app I had been using when I started noticing the issue (CSR Racing) and I haven't had the problem in days. Then I installed PBA Bowling and got the same glitch last night. Gunna uninstall that game and see if it fixes the problem, if not I'll call back.
I didn't test anything with the S-Pen though.
I noticed that sometimes happens when the WatchOn app crashes. I disabled it and I'll see how it goes.

I'm having the same issue like you too. Exactly the same scenario like what you mentioned.
And I even factory reset twice with stock apps and still have the same problem!
I can't even send a proper SMS when they keyboard type by itself.
Yes! Sometimes it takes an hour to happen, sometimes it happens three times within five minutes. Disabling WatchOn didn't work, and I don't think SwiftKey is the problem since it happens even during browsing on Chrome :/

After figuring it out for a while, it seems like it hanged when we "touch" using our finger.
But when I use the S-pen it works. Don't understand why
I found a solution for myself, i had the same problem and realize that putting phone into rice overnight for 7-8h solve problem, you should try.. I've been facing this problem for about 3 months and i tried every solution from every site.

Issues with recent 4.4.2 update, black lock screen, sluggish, enormous battery drain.

I'm bone stock, no root and have recently applied the L720VPUFNAE update. Since taking the update, the phone has had nothing but problems. When awakening 50% of the time I will get nothing but a black screen and will have to hard boot the phone. The other 50% of the time, it's extremely slow to accept my unlock code. Half of my home screen shortcuts are gone, just disappeared. Battery life is terrible, just a few hours of life. I've browsed here for solutions and have seen some people having similar issues on other sites, but no solutions. Is there a way to force the update again to see if that fixes it? Any other solutions aside from factory reset? Often times the phone will ring and I cannot even answer it because it won't wake up properly!
I would suggest to factory reset the phone then proceed to Odin NAE tar that is available in the development section. Of course back up important things just to be sure. I had bad battery life for a few days. Until I discovered that it was clash of clans that was draining my battery. On Wi-Fi with the screen off it would drain about 4% since using greenify on it my battery now doesn't drains 0-1% under the same circumstances. You might have a rouge app that is draining your juice.

I am having these same exact issues. Really don't want to do a factory wipe if possible, but I am starting to think I may have to do it.
Also, the wifi issues have not been fixed with this release.
Anyone using anything like Juice Defender since the update -- is it helping with battery drain?

After the last update to 4.3 a few months back, I also had some serious issues which were only solved by a factory reset. I hate the thought of doing it again, it's so much work getting all the tweaks and settings back the way they were. But it appears that may be my only option. Each OTA patch Samsung has released has been a disaster, it's getting to the point where HTC might be back on the menu for me.
Bit dramatic there. If a factory reset fixes it there's nothing wrong with the update which you might have to do with an htc update also.

As a followup to my own post, here's what I tried to fix it:
1 - A full factory reset with data wipe. Unsuccessful.
2 - A visit to the Sprint Store to have them nuke & pave the device to complete stock (it already was, but hey). Unsuccessful.
3 - Remove the Exchange Active Sync account. Successful.
To me this indicates a severe issue with the stock EAS client that comes with Kit Kat. If you are having similar problems to me, where the lock screen takes 20 seconds to appear, battery drain is enormous and the phone has problems "waking up" from screen power-off, try removing your Exchange account.
I might have to give something like Touchdown a try, I'm open to suggestions of a less costly alternative though.
once i remove it.....what will become unusable??

I don't know if it's the same for you, but I had the native Exchange Active Sync email configured on my device with a enforced PIN lock. When my EAS account was configured under KitKat, the PIN lock screen had all sorts of issues, the device would get hot and battery life would go out the window. I deleted the EAS account, not the service.
Since then, I switched to Nine for my Exchange mail and the problem is completely gone. To make sure I configured the native app and deleted it a number of times. Each time the native EAS email was configured and the lock screen set, the phone crapped out. Nine enforces the same PIN lock policy, however my lock screen no longer freezes and kills battery. I am using "device security" with Nine, not "account security".
I'm honestly surprised to be the only one to experience this after combing through this and other forums. It means there's either something unique about my phone hardware/config or my Exchange server that causes the PIN lock screen to crap out. I don't have any lock screen widgets active.
My wife has a bone stock S4 with the same problems. We flashed the stock kitkat tar with odin and wiped data which didn't help. She doesnt use exchange, just gmail. Im trying to convince her to move to a gsm provider and get a nexus. Im Effing done with sprints garbage network and garbage bloated roms. Any suggestions before I set this phone on fire?

So I had the same problem and this drove me crazy. I tried wiping Cache from OS, from Home key+Up volume+power, I tried a factory reset, I event tried applying the 4.4.2 patch via ODIN. I tried removing the lock screen and company email. The problem kept coming back.
Today however I brainstormed with a coworker who also has a working 4.4.2 S4 on ATT. After comparing settings for the lock screen we noticed the new swipe option and turned that on. What a bad move... that locked the phone up hard to the point I kept getting "com.android.systemui" stopped responding. I had no choice but to pull the battery and reset a few times and it didn't fix the problem. At last I had the idea to pull the SD card and boot the phone. That worked!
Everything worked exactly as snappy as it did with 4.3, so I rebooted a few times, got some texts, turned on the lock screen in order of swipe, and then PIN. With everything working I turned off the lock screen and put the SD card back in.
No problems....
rebooted
No problems...
turned back on the lock screen and all has been running well.
I'll report back if it slows down in a few days but at this point I've come to the conclusion that this problem has to do with the SD card. My thought is the Symbolic link which guides the OS to the SD card stay in the system even after the reset or upon reapplying a Play app. The removal and boot without the card removed the symbolic link and reset all the ExStorage to the new Kernel/OS version.
Hope this helps anyone suffering the same problems!!
Just wanted to throw my 2 pennies of experience in the ring. I'm on MF9 Bootloader and just recently moved to an NAE rom and kernel. I at first left my modem MF9, and everything was fine. Yesterday I flashed NAE modem and thats when the lag/black screen/CPU continuously working began. I cleared cache and Dalvik and still no fix. Being that I had just flashed the modem, I flashed back to MF9 modem and the issues went away. I then repeated the NAE modem flash and same issues came back. I'm back on MF9 modem and back to normal so far. I will also say that after flashing modems, there is a pop-up at boot that says something about android updating(no this is not the normal message when you clear dalvik). I dont know what the exact issue is, but for now I'm going to stick with MF9 modem.
Edit - Before anyone asks, I did check the MD5 of the NAE modem. That was my first thought is maybe a bad download.
Did you end up fixing your issue? I tried the SD card thing and it seemed good for 12 hours or so and then started having issues again. Thanks.

Same thing happened to my S4. Moved to an NAE ROM and also installed the NAE firmware. Could not figure out why this slow down was happening. After some googling I ran across something that suggested installing the MF9 firmware again. After flashing 3 times to actually get it to stick, my issues went away.
I don't understand why some phones don't like the NAE firmware, but I just chalk it up to technology is weird sometimes and have accepted it. It works fine and good signal with the MF9 firmware, so I'm not worried about getting NAE to work.
I did just notice about 3 days ago that my battery life was dropping a lot without even using it. This is on stock unroofed NAE. I used to average 15 hours with 3.5hrs screen time. Now I am lucky if I can get 7 hours with 2 hours of screen time. It might be my phone so I might go to A sprint store to see if my battery is failing. It isn't a rouge app that is affecting it , not low signal( have an airwave). I go.to sleep with 90% and wake up 6 hours later with around 50% or less.

[Q] Knock-On & Pull Down Nav Menu Problems

Hey guys,
In the last two weeks i've noticed that my Knock On feature stopped working completely. It will Knock Off but it will not knock on. Also, my pull down notification menu will have issues. i will start to pull down and it will "catch" and then stop. It appears to pull down still as long as I stop at the spot it is having problem.
I am running Scott's Clean ROM with no other Mods. Uninstalled all apps since the problem, still nothing. Also, I have tried wiping cache and davlik cache. Still nothing.
Any one else having this issues or a solution? Thanks!

Yeah I have that problem, I had to send my phone to LG for repair.I'm due to get it back this week.
Sounds like a hardware problem to me.
I received my phone back on Saturday, on the return docs it just said 'replaced touch screen'. It's working fine but I'm surprised they replaced the screen, I expected it to be a software issue to be honest.
Had the same issue att sent me a new one

This just started happening for me too. It's a bar across the screen near the top, which happens to be in line with the power button on back. Considering the knock on stops working, and it being right in line with the power button I feel like it would be software related, but updating to Kit Kat / factory reset did nothing for me. Also I did nothing to my phone to suddenly cause a hardware failure. Hopefully LG is trying to resolve. I am giving it a couple weeks before I try a warranty repair -- a friend of mine had the same issue and it suddenly went away.
I had the same issue for a day then and went away and now its back again.
I don't know if that is hardware or software issue.
Anyone got some info about it? I don't got any warranty so I would like to know more about this issue before paying for screen replacement.
