Data is slow - Verizon Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So, I have a friend at work with an S5. She just switched over from the iPhone and I so want her to love android but she has emailed, called me about 3x a week to fix problems with it. She is not getting anything to load right. I took a look at it today and I think there is something wrong with her sim card slot but I want to be sure.
Neither of her gmail accounts will sync. It says something is wrong with sync but it will be back shortly. I tried her sim card in my phone and added her accounts......fine. ( I have an S4). I loaded my sim card in her phone and still nothing. Won't sync, Facebook won't connect. Nothing. Her sim works fine in my phone, and neither are syncing in hers. The slot itself is different from the S4. The s4 slot is spring loaded so you just push on the sim and it pops out. Hers the sim just slides in. I had to use a paper clip to get it back out. I'm thinking this is wrong. Shouldn't it be spring loaded? Shouldn't you be able to get the sim out easily? I advised her to ask for a replacement phone.

Sounds like a replacement device is in order, and while at it, why not a replacement SIM just to put the icing on the cake.

ive broken mine within 48 hours!

morning,
Ive just put my new simcard in my old phone (spvm700) to copy the contacts over, when i put the simcard back into the touch HD, i get the no sim screen. Now the only thing i can think of is that when putting the sim in i bent it slightly to get it in, to clear the battery. I didnt realise till after, that if you take the battery out then it just slides in without bending. I put no more pressure or bent the sim anymore than is necessary to insert the sim in the m700. When i put the new sim in my old phone it works. when i put the old sim in the new phone, i dont get the no sim screen, it boots but as the card is cancelled there is no orange logo etc. I borroed a new orange sim off a friend to try in the touch Hd and it also says no sim.
New phone on its way tomorrow.

I can buy it from you for $100
unfortunately orange want the old one back
now if only i could get the active synch to work last night, i wouldnt have this problem!! I use thunderbird and not outlook. but could i hell as like get it to synch with the copy of outlook on my machine that i dont use.
I would of thought that the CD with the phone contained a version of outlook - every outher PDA Phone I have purchased - even the diamind) did?
I cant check either as my box is a work - and I use exchange push to sync so no need.
Did you get replacement via orange care?
its does come with a trial version of outlook. I already have outlook on my machine but i dont have it setup.i put a pretend email adress in just to set it up and when trying to synch with my phone, i got an error, cant remember what it was as im at work.
i'm not sure if it was orange care or not, she didnt say, i only put orange care on the day before!

Now you got twice the kit?? Sounds like a good way to get an additional charger and give an SD card to my gf for her phone
i cant seem to get the volume buttons to work properly. they are doing odd things, now they dont do anything.
Hi!
My first HD also had a defective "Volume Down" button (sometimes stuck pressed, sometimes not working at all).
Try removing the battery cover and clean the buttons. If the problem persists, exchange the phone! I did and the new one now works much better. The power button of this one even sticks out a bit so I can press it without using the fingernails - which was necessary with my first HD!
Regards!

SIM card not inserted - anyone else had this problem?

Hi all,
Just got home, looked at my mobile and it said there was no signal - so I turned it off and back on again, then it said there was no SIM inserted. Keep restarting the phone, keeps saying the same thing. Why?!
Am going to try it in my old SE K850i to see if it's the SIM card or the phone at fault.
In the mean time, does anyone else know of this fault and how to fix..?
I didn't the drop the phone or anything, it was just in my pocket, on it's own - like it always is!
Cheers
Tried it in my K850, works fine. Please someone help
yeah i usually dont put the sim card all the way in but slightly in and it works
I've re-opened this thread due to me misreading....DOH! Apologies (Mental note to one self.......follow own advice and read before posting).
Ta
Rick
you could try to clean the contacts on the sim card connector of the phone with a q-tip, and see if that solves the problem.
also check if any of those contacts appears to be bent or something, and so doesn't make a connection with the card.
Everytime I open the back up to remove the SD card, I get the SIM card missing bit even though I have not touched it! My HD is only 3 months old and it has done this from the start. I just have to remove it a bit - shove it back in and the phone accepts it is there. Annoying but not enough for me to send it back.
hmm, maybe try to make the sim a bit thicker so it doesnt move around (it shouldn't move by removing the back cover, but it seems to happen on your phone / sim combination.
try putting a thin piece of paper on top of the sim (not the contacts side, but the side facing to the battery cover)
maybe that prevents this problem?
Missing simcard
I have the same problem with my simcard. Though something strange happens when the phone is off for more then 10min, it works fine and notices there is a simcard for like 30 sec after which the error pops-up again. I have tried all of the above things, my simcard works fine in my other phone, adding some paper to thicken it doesn't work either
Anyone who could help me with this?
P.S. sorry for the bad english
As in post 7# written, put some papersheet in the simholder above your simcard to increase the contactpreasure. This surely helps.
Tis trick is also useful for all dualsim users who thik the dualsimadapter does not work in their device (but after using this trick get astonished!)
for Thysiey:
Try to switch to Gsm mode to test . Maybe you have bad umts signal? Happens at other places too, or only at one place?
Got the same issue here...
I cannot move the SIM because it is being hold in place by the battery. (to little room)
Adding a piece did not work either.
Anyone got another solution?
anyone? My mothers HD just got this problem now. She has a new phone and for the contract renewal she had to read the backside of the sim. The phone all of a sudden didn't recognizes the simcard anymore.. I tried a few other simcards but it won't read it anymore.
My plan was to sell the old phone but now it's almost worthless just a shame it is still a great phone to operate.. handy with the navigation and all

Voice command terminates...

I have tried looking on the forums for these problems, and the only thing that comes up is an issue from like 3 years ago with a different phone.
I think this issue is different than the early post because I don't really use a blue tooth headset with my phone. I just plug it into my car audio, and the voice/music goes through the car speakers. With that said, Every time I boot up my phone, a prompt comes up saying that voicecommand needs to end because I am low on memory. I am running the stock ROM and haven't flashed anything yet (really nervous about it) but one thing I have done is add a file to the StarUp folder in the windows directory. The program is a colored battery gage to let me know where the battery life is at. However, I can't uninstall it for some reason, probably because the file is in use. But when I go to the task manager, the program isn't even listed!!!
Also, earlier today, the touch screen when the phone dialer was completely not working. The only way I could end calls was to push the hang-up button at the bottom of the phone. I couldn't mute the call, nor put it on speaker phone. I was thinking that these two issues were related. I am really getting sick of this phone and have already put my SIM card back into my iphone.
Lastly, on my iphone, blackberry, and G1 I had numbers listed in the 123.456.7890 format and could text just fine. But on the HD2, when i try to text those numbers (its all jumbled, really, some i entered in as (123) 456-7890, and others the first), the text wont send because it returns an "Invalid Number" or something.
Any feedback I thank in advance and please don't hate me if these problems have already been addressed in early posts.
ive got the same message on bootup as you have. i read somewhere it may have something to do with having low memory on the sim card or having an old sim card. not sure about the number problem but i would be interested to know exactly whats causing the low memory message also. ive had stock, energy, and cell ROMs and all had this message. so i think it has something to do with the sim card and not the ROMs or apps installed. by the way this Cell rom is the shiitt! my favorite by far, just FYI for anyone looking for a baller rom.

I suspect that at least 2, if not all 3, of your issues could be cleared up by getting tmo to get you a newer sim card. They should do it for free.
OH thats easy enough! I have like 2 of them lying around from various phones I have had. I will try that out later today Tho it has been a while since i had contacts on my sim card. I have used google sync for years now, and have been rather pleased, except for some reason, using google sync puts my contacts onto the HD2 as Last Name, First Name automatically. And when I try switching them around, as soon as it gets synced again, it goes back the same way. But otherwise, I like it!

Well...I don't know if the problem(s) will be solved just by using a different sim card, I was suggesting you get a new one from Tmo...there's a newer revision of SIM cards available that might alleviate some of your issues, it's at least worth starting there. Just walk into any tmo store, tell them that you called tech support and were told to come in and get a new sim. (I'm assuming that when you got the HD2, you just kept using the same sim you had had before)

I actually bought my HD2 from someone that had already bought theirs and didn't like it. She had it for 2 weeks then sold it to me for cheap. She never used the SIM card that came with the phone, so I would imagine that that sim card is a new one. And yes, I used the same sim card I have had for the past 4 years or so. The last time I got a new sim card, it cost me 20 bucks. I don't think the T-mobile store just gives them out.

So...the sim in the HD2 that's giving you issues is the one that the girl got when she bought the phone, or the one you've been using for 4 years? If it's the latter, then yes, you need a new one. Tmo will charge you $20 if you just say you'd like to have a new one, but I've gotten 2 newer ones (one for me, one for daughter) just by walking in and telling the store that customer service instructed me to come in and get one to troubleshoot an issue with my phone...no charge.

The only sim card I have used on the HD2 is the one I have had for 4 years. The sim card that came with the HD2 hasn't ever been used. I think the girl used her own sim card before that. But she switched to AT&T anyway to get an iPhone, so she is probably enjoying life.
How often should I get a new sim card?

It's not something you need to do very often, it's just that a better version was released a while ago (like a year or two ago), and it's known to work better especially in smartphones.
And...if you have in your possession the unused card that came with the HD2, that would work fine, and Tmo can't even try to charge you for a new one...just tell them you need to have the newer one flashed to your number, and that should do it.
UPDATE: I don't think its a SIM card issue. My sim card isn't even in the device and every time I reboot it the same error comes up. WORST PHONE EVER (and I really liked my TMO MDA. Aside from a few strange glitches, it never had a problem!)

Can you give a link to that batt meter you installed and can't uninstall? I'm going to try it to see if 1) I get any odd behavior, and 2) I can find a way for you to uninstall it.
Sorry, I also forgot to mention that I was able to successfully shut the program down and move it out of the windows startup folder. Turns out, all I had to do was tap the file, and it turned off. Then I powered the phone off and turned it back on. I went back into the folder, cut the program out of the startup folder and moved it somewhere else. Then I was able to delete it. Even after doing this, the voicecmd.exe error prompt comes up. But the battery gage is pretty cool still...
These problems really started occurring after I had put music onto the memory card. And when I check the memory in the settings tab, I still have plenty of free memory. I even toggled between turning off HTC sense and selecting the different menus and the voicecmd.exe prompt comes up. So it could be because of the large files I have put onto my memory card, which just goes to show that either the card is faulty, or the card driver/reader is faulty?

Quite possibly, yes...the SD card that was shipped with these phones is the suspect in a large number of issues people have experienced. Have you tried running with a different card, or no card at all? Some people who found that removing the card cleared up their issues also found that copying all your stuff off the card, then reformatting it and putting it back in the phone works too.
I just copied the stuff off the card, formated it, and reinstalled the music and such. Pretty much the same thing happened. I even did a hard reset on the phone. I guess its the card.

Did you use the phone for a while with no card at all in it? I just want to make sure we've clearly eliminated all possibilities
I had the voice command problem- if you go to settings->all settings->personal->buttons and change the default for send key from voice command to ok/close, it stops coming up.
I used the phone for a while without putting music onto the memory card. But I have always had the stock memory card in it. This really started happening as soon as I loaded music onto it. I had a few files on it like the bsb tweaks and other mods. But nothing big. What is interesting is that I found a 8 gig micro sdhc lying around and put that in. It has a bunch of pictures and files from school when I had my bb last summer. When I try opening some of the pictures, a new prompt comes up saying "A problem has occurred with HTCPhotoPicker.exe..." and the picture viewer terminates. What the eff is wrong with my phone???
So i think its most definitely something to do with the memory card. When I take it out, it doesn't have a problem. When I put it back in, thats when it acts up. And I even tried deleting all my music from the card then putting it back on, and it still occurs. I emailed HTC about it. Hopefully, I actually get a response.

SIM card issue... any advice?

I'm not sure if this is a common issue or just an issue with my sim card.
Looks like the sim card just stopped working this morning. I can't make/receive any calls or texts and the lock screen says "Please insert SIM card and restart".
I've restarted about 3 times now and have tried removing and reinserting the sim card, with no luck.
I figure I'll need to take it into a T-Mobile shop to get a new sim card, but my Vibrant has been rooted and has a the Obsidian Froyo rom installed.
Should I just plug the SIM into my old blackberry and take it in that way for replacement?
Or is this some known issue that can be easily fixed?

I have had this happen to me twice. Once, the SIM went bad (it happens).
I called TMO told them that it's not working & they said they'd get me a new SIM. I had the option of going to an authorized TMO store or getting it mailed to me. I went to a store, they installed & it off I went.
The other time, I took some rubbing alcohol and a QTip to it & cleaned it up, let it dry, put it back in & it's been working for a little over a week now
So, I'd try giving it a cleaning first and if that doesn't work, give TMO a call.
If they don't know that you have the Vibrant and think you still have a BB, then yeah, I'd put it back in that rather than bringing in the Vibrant if you have to go to the store. It's just easier when the person helping you isn't trying to force you to change your plan at the same time.
Question: The phone won't let you do anything without a SIM card? If that's true, that's just another reason to be glad I SIM unlocked my phone....that would get annoying!
Old Tmobile sim cards actually have a certain amount of times they can connect to the network tower. If you use airplane mode a lot it you may reach this point quickly.
And some sims cards just go bad. Which I think is the case with yours tjhart85. Take the phone and card to Tmobile. Tmobile will change the sim card for free.
Yup, turned out the sim card just went bad. Called up T-Mobile customer service, they put a not on my acount, and went into my local T-Mobile store and got a new sim card. Phones working great now. They didn't even ask for the old one and didn't have to look at my phone.
Thanks guys!

Fixing no sim card detected and no service

Dears
Facing the problem of no service and no sim card detected on my v20 after a reboot or randomly ,i ve tried every thing and found out that the problem is coming from the sim card reader ,there is a space left between the sim card and the reader causing the problem ,the fix is to full the space with a small paper or something to force the sim card into the reader
I know this is a necro post, but I wanted to confirm that this DOES indeed work. I got a second hand V20 from eBay today and couldn't get the thing to recognize the SIM Verizon was giving me at all. Gotta go back tomorrow to have them activate it now that I know this trick works on this phone!!

I ended up sending the phone back for exchange, after a small 1" drop the SIM was dislodged and the adapter broke and got a new one which didn't have the issue, so I unfortunately don't have any pictures. The best way however to place it is to ensure that it is directly over the SIM card and goes into the slot with your SIM, it should be providing some pressure on the back of the SIM to push it into the slot firmly, but not bulge the MicroSD adapter's metal too much, if you've done that, a fall may just break your SIM reader.
