Problem has been solved in newer firmware for i9505 --> XXUGNF1, if you have this problem just update your rom to this base.
Hi, first i want to provide my phones's information:
DeviceMaker : Samsung
Device Name : Galaxy S4
Device Model : i9505
Android OS version : KitKat 4.4.2 Build XXUGNE5
Network : WiFi
Skype client version installed : v4.0.0.19550 till v4.9
1. Brief description of bad behavior. 2. Steps to repeat bad behavior.
When making a call i have no problem with earphone and i can easily adjust the volume, however problem arises when i switch it to speaker, the volume is too loud that distorted and my volume level is on minimal so if i volume it up it will be louder actually i didn't go for maximum volume because i'm sure that it would going to destroy my phone's speaker.
Point - 1: I don't use any MOD for sound or any app that can modify or interfer with skype's or roms sound system.
Point - 2: It's not just me that have the same problem on XXUGNE5 build, I confirmed it in XDA forum.
Point - 3: Older rom builds for example XXUFNB8 which is 4.4.2 too, works correctly and no problems there.
Point - 4: Skype v3.2 doesn't have this problem with this build (XXUGNE5)
Not Professional conclusion of mine is that something has been changed regarding sound handling from v4.0.0.19550 and of course something specific changed in new 4.4.2 build of s4 i9505 XXUGNE5 that conflicts with skype changes or viseversa
Hope to see solution soon.
Thank you All

Thank you to all XDA
P.S i don't know how to make good tags for this thread can you help me with that? so other ppl searching for this problem find it easily...

Running GoldenEye v32 (XXUGNE5), I haven't tried Skype yet, but I do think the overall volume is loader than previously. I haven't added any volume mods and I dont think its tweaked by the dev, but ringtones/notifications and music definitely seem a bit louder/clearer than before.

You should try skype using speaker and you will understand what kind of loud volume you have, it is not loud it is sometimes unrecognizable because of distortion.
galaxy s4 skype volume too loud on loudspeaker
im facing the same problem. when I turn on the loudspeaker or video the volume blasts out!! volume control has no effect.

is there a fix for the low volume in call problem? i searched everywhere and i cant find any solutions... im with 2.1 blue sparks rom.
There is a custom kernel with an in call volume fix but the custom kernels aren't totally stable yet and have other drawbacks. The call volume seems like its a network related issue because for many users, like me, the call volume is fine.

that sucks, i tried resetting my network connection, nothing improved....
For those who have a custom rom like CM6 or CM7 : Have you tried to raise the sound with something like DSPManager ?
It can potentially be a solution for this problem ! I will test it in next call I have and do my feedback here !

Yes please report back. As i did test the earphone in test service
It works perfectly, crystal clear and loud.
It seems to be better with DSPManager activated. But it can be because the communication was good ... So I'm not sure at 100% that it's better but it seems.
has any dev came up with a solution yet?
I googled and searched the forum, most saying the in-call volume is too loud and so forth.
But I am getting the other end, where the other side can't hear me much unless my lips are literally next to the microphone or shout it out loud.
Done many tests and confirmed that my previous TYTUNG ROM was better, but then it freezes my phone with incoming calls sometimes... I have had a few updates through Dorimanx and quite happy except this low mic volume issue.
Does anyone have a clue on this? I would like to seek for solutions better flashing out another ROM like crazy. Thanks!

Do you have speaker phone enabled ? if not , thats your problem . when using the earpiece for a call the microphone levels are set as if you are holding the device right up to your ear and the microphone is right next to your mouth . as a normal phone would work . try enabling speaker phone and see if that does anything .
If not you could try this http://code.google.com/p/custom-android-sciphone-n19/wiki/MicGain are phones (well mine at least) doesnt have this file but at the same time if you add this file and reboot it may use it . just be sure to backup everything using recovery backup . just in case .
You can use HD2 Mic Control on the Maket.
Or flash Tytung kernel

Hi, guys
Have big issue with incall volume, on every nand androids which i flashed in last 2 day have almost non possibe to hear other person.
When putting call on speaker its normal volume and can here everything.
Problem started after few days while using miui hd android.
Searched this section of forum and didnt find any working solution.
Tried this:
Task29 provided by doloop
Reinstalling DFT_LEO_MAGLDR113_DAF
Reinstalling Cwm 3.x.x AND 5.0.2.7 Recovery
Tried different Flash.cfg partition size
Tried around 10 diffferent nand roms
But allways same results, very low incall sound, normall speaker sound.
Is this maybe hardware failure?
Doesn maybe changing to some Radio would fix issue even i use current radio till now without any issue for almost 2 years.
Radio rom which use is: Radio Leo 2.15.50.14
Any advice is wellcome, ty in advance.

I don't see what it can be other than hardware failure, but if you try Volume+ you can increase the volume of your mic/headset by a lot (although you will have to trade off some sound quality at the higher ranges). Is it just the in-call volume or the volume when playing music aloud as well? Might help deduce whether it's a hardware or software fault. My dad's old iPhone 2G (I've been pestering him to get an upgrade for ages) has an issue where it detects something plugged into the headphone jack even when it's not there. Maybe your phone is doing a similar thing?
Shortly:
Calls which are on speakerphone works and its clear and loud
Notification, ringtones working clear and loud
Music is playing and sound loud and normal.
Calls on headset sound loud and normal
In call volume is very low(when call isnt putted on speakerphone), hard to hear person even when volume is up fully.

Well in that case it isn't hardware failure and I honestly don't know why it would happen so randomly. Try messing with the call settings in the settings menu and see what you can change that might solve your issue. For example, try turning off the dial tones (or whatever they're called) and haptic feedback etc., it's helped others in the past judging by what I could find.
fix permissions in cwm should work. u can find it under advanced
i dont think its hardware related from what you say.maybe you are unlucky and have problems with the specific rom.
if you cant adjust it from the settings on the phone, there are some apps on the market that let you adjust all the sound related features (volume control+,audio manager and many more).
then you can try reflashing your rom (clean install preferred after you do a backup)
if that fails maybe theres dust or garbage in the cracks and you should try cleaning your phone from the inside(but thats VERY risky if you dont know how to open the phone properly..)
and if everything fails then try a new rom maybe?????
Ty guys for helps and advice .Seems after a while that found source of issues, was related to Ext partition in combination with androids which use them. My card works suspicious, ill need to buy new one, this time ill stick with Sandisk type, current is Toshiba's card micro hc version which from start didn't gave me some good reliability on hd2.

Hello everyone,
I've just installed JB CM10 RC2 by PolishVodka, ROM works fine, but i can't hear the voice of person I call. I have also flashed all fixes included in main thread, but it does not solve my problem. Of course before installation I have fully wiped my phone via Recovery (latest verion), resized partitions etc. On GB/ICS roms I haven't noticed this problem. I would like to use this JB rom as my daily, so please help me!

Would you mind if I post about PolishVodkas rom here? My problem may be somewhat related to yours: the sounds (except music) are always on the speaker, even if headphones are plugged in. ANd when there is a call incoming the phone behaves like headphones are unplugged and plays all sound through speaker, thats mean music AND the ringtone of icoming call.
If this rom werent so fast and stable I would just forget about it and flashed something else, but I really would love to stay with it. PolishVodka - hope you read it.

You're welcome, P.G.R I have reported my problem directly to PolishVodka . He told me, that some users have encountered described problem with phone calls, but on his phone everything works fine, so it's pretty hard for him to find the source of this bug. Anyway I have good news - during the call let's try to set the volume higher or lower by +/- buttons. I've done it once and problem disappeared permamently I haven't tested headphones, but maybe this little PolishVodka's trick solves all sound problems

Good, but, meanwhile, Ive returned to AOSP2 and it is super fast, its weird that no one uses it as a base for their 2.3.7 roms (most seems to base their work on SDSL, which was always too "jerky" for me...)
That explains why I got no sound while I was getting called.

Hi. I need help in troubleshooting a problem with my Samsung Galaxy y. The mic volume is very low during calls made from Viber. Lore means really very faint. The problem does not seem to be with the app as the mic volume is perfectly loud and clear with other smartphones. I tried to search for any code for entering engineering mode like in latest mediatek phones to manually set values but no joy. So now i need an experts advice on this matter. I hope i get a solution here. Btw i am using the stock original gingerbread rom.
Thanks in advance.
Please note that not all devices running Gingerbread Android OS can support Viber. You must be running Android 2.3.6 and higher in order to use Viber. Should your phone not be supported, this could be the reason that your audio quality is not great.
If your phone meets the requirement, please check that you have the latest version of Viber for Android (4.3.3.67) installed.

Hi,
Thanks for your reply. The android version is certainly 2.3.6 with all software updates from Samsung installed. The speaker volume is good but it's only the mic volume that is very faint. Issue is with only this particular device, otherwise i have two other smartphone running jellybean in my family and the sound quality is great. So i don't really blame your app for this. May be there could be an issue with the phone's own software.

Do you have any other VOIP applications installed on your phone? It'd be interesting to see if this is something that is specific to Viber, or if it happens with other applications as well.

Oops. It's too late to experiment that. I have already sold it and replaced it with lava iris 455. Viber works pretty good with that now. If there are any other Samsung Galaxy y users here then they may want to try that out and post their replies here.
