[FIXED] Nexus 4 Battery drain and heating - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My nexus 4 heats up very much when using 3G data or while charging. It also drains battery very quickly while using 3g data or even when the phone is idle. Here's how I fixed it. [ YOU MUST BE ROOTED IN ORDER TO DO THIS]
WORKS ONLY WITH ANDROID 4.4.2
1.You need to flash franco.kernel for nexus 4.
2. Calibrate your battery. There are tons of apps to do this which are available on google play store.
3. Enjoy your Nexus 4.
Thank me if it helped or Thank me even if this not helped. Thank me if you read it xD

1. Why? There are many great kernels avaible for the Nexus 4 , why does it have to be franco?
2.You should read some more about how batteries in modern smartphones work , its just a placebo effect , "calibrating" doesent help at all , and actually running your battery low on purpose can hurt it.
3.The nexus 4 has a fairly small battery and it gets hot because of its design, but i can get 4-5 hrs OST and it isnt that hot anyways .

OMG., after searching for answers for a year, someone finally figured out how to wipe the cache....
I see a thread closure in your future.

I want my 2 minutes back ?

Ha don't be so hard on him there was also an time that we were in that beginner phase, let him learn -±- and it might help other people, who would ask the same. But it doesnt need to be specifically franco but he can mention to look for an custom kernel and that he prefers franco kernel, i prefer now hot weather and beach but also turn off location in 4.4.2 cause location is annoying (thats how the NSA is tracking every terrorist) but i am giving one thanks to him for amusement? so if you are feeling now like? well LG Life's Good you know?
I need to get back to some asian keyboard again i gues more smilts oleschool.

Simply cuz ur tutorial is misleading... For sure franco's kernel may be better than stock so u may get better battery and less heat "issues", but that can be achieved with any custom kernel when correctly tuned.

Best battery life JB rom

Guys, as I am truly annoyed by the fact stock JB is draining like hell, I would like to know the best rom available now. If any of you have good experience with a particular rom let me know

Try Adam's ROM I'm getting similar battery life as in ics
Sent from my Nexus S using Tapatalk 2
It's most likely not a ROM issue. I tried Adams and CM10 and had similar battery life. Make sure you turn off google now (just the cards that need to know your location constantly). It might also be that your update didn't go that well, so you might try a factory reset. It could also be a misbehaving app, so when you do a factory reset, maybe test the ROM before restoring/reinstalling your apps. Also, the more information you give us the better we can help. Good luck!

Thanks for the info. I installed the stock factory image 4.0.4 and then waited for the official OTA. I updated and all works well, but I get around 15 hrs on a full charge with some Whatsapp and Facebook use. When I use it more intense with more screentime the battery drains the most. I think a factory reset wont give me more battery life then this, but I know my drain was not so big while I was on ICS.
By the way, which one is the most stable; CW10 (That chocolate river one??) or Jellybelly?

Sounds weird. But also keep in mind that there are still some apps that don't cope very well with JB, and Facebook has never been Androids best friend . But it doesn't make sense that it's only during screen on, most people report issues related to google now and apps doing **** in the background. If you want to switch ROM anyways, I suggest you use Adams Jellybelly, it's mostly stock (less features means less that can go wrong) and it includes thalamus kernel, which is IMHO the best JB kernel at the moment. I do not recommend any CM10 based ROMs if you're after stability. I assume you checked your battery stats and didn't find anything?
Edit: Chocolate river was abandoned when official OTA came afaik, so definitely Jellybelly . Make sure you do a full wipe though, if something's wrong dirty flashing isn't worth it.

Sounds good to me. Downloading Jellybelly now. I checked my battery stats and didn't find anywhing weird. I dont have much apps installed so there is not much that could give issues. When I leave my screen off (at night or while working) the battery life is not that bad. It's weird, but JB is still very fresh and new, so I'll just try some other roms =)
Agreed jelly belly provides the best performance, stability, and battery life

Now running JellyBelly and its much faster then my stock JB

also for me battery life was improved in jb
Wouldn't agree that jellybelly provides best performance and battery. I suggest trying out cm10 v1.2

I am currently on JellyBelly and the battery life is definitely not better than stock for me. Battery drains like crazy when idling.
BUT, I do have Google Now activated. So really make sure to deactivate if you do not need it.
IMO all ROMs should give similar battery life.

Even with Google now turned on the battery should last some time. Do You get the same time as with ICS when it's deactivated? If not, something's borked .
Even if the battery life isnthe same with Jellybelly, the performance is great!

For some reason Kalin is posting new versions of CM10 on G+ now

[Q] Anyone can explain ? :)

So I have had my Nexus 4 for 7 exact days, was suffering from a terrible battery life of 1:30 hrs MAX screen-on. Until I flashed CM10.1+Franco's latest kernel and my phone has a 3:30 hrs of screen time on ! - I tried AOKP with Faux and some other rom combinations...Any one can explain why?
And clearly the battery life on WIFI surpasses the one on 3g.
It probably has a lot to do with the "msm_hsic_host" kernel wakelock that is present on the stock kernel. Flashing to either franco or faux kernel is supposed to be a great way to fix it and increase battery life
Because Franco Kernel is like magic?
Edit: oh hey! you're the same guy from yesterday I suggested Franco Kernel to and pm'd me for additional tips

1:30 screen time Max? Damn.... Do you use your phone as a satellite? And WiFi IS ALWAYS better on the battery than 3g, that goes for any phones.

Thanks for the suggestion. Tinkering with phone settings is not in my priority list, but knowing what the kernel is doing with my phone is definitely useful if I decide to tinker later.
And free phone state knowledge is priceless (as in it has no list price :cyclops

Not sure if it has the ability to disable logging and events (i think it does). You can disable those two features for better battery life (very insignificant but every bit helps, right?) and you can disable fsync if you choose to (more IO speed, less stability mainly if your phone was to randomly reboot).
Plus the free color changing is always nice to have.
3 to 4 hours with screen on is normal battery life for a stock Nexus 4.
It sounds like you were running something that was draining the battery.
When you updated the phone, the new ROM turned off the culprit.
The battery drain is not necessarily caused by an app, it could be one
of the Google services or bad reception. Even changing the phone's default
settings can result in much better battery life.
This might be a stupid question, but could switching from stock kernel/ROM fix my antenna radio reception bull**** issues?

Oh hey bbrad! I'm so glad u responded because I do infact have so many questions for you lol. I'm currently running your aokp unofficial 4.2.2 march 29 rom with the devil kernel and I love it! I just have bad battery drain issues even when I try to underclock, the battery drains badly. I tried to download the devil kernel manager to help sort out the issues but I can't get anything to stick after a reboot. I've tried searching for a solution but no luck. I have ran many of your roms they are my favorite to this day but I dont think I remember having bad battery drain on your other ones. Is there something i can do?
I even have a 3500mah extended battery and it doesnt make it through a day of work :/

oh thanks for telling me about the undervolting. I did not know I'll go back stock. its a brand new battery but it was one of those cheap ones from ebay.. I have 2 extended batteries and my original. i havent tried the rom on my original battery yet. I'm pretty sure I did a clean install.. you do that by wiping dalvik and partition cache right? I always wipe before I install anything but ill go back through everything when i get off work. I'm at learning about all that and now that im actually pasta on the forum i can learn a lot better lol
Ive heard that undervolting doesnt really help with battery life and any benefits would be only a few percent or minutes.
Most generics I bought on ebay died after a couple months. I would look on amazon for a 1800mah epic touch battery. You can find them on ebay but its a gamble if its real. I bought 2 1800s for about $28.
Fresh install would also include wiping data or a factory reset along with cache and davlik cache. Or you can clean install with odin and odin a custom recovery then re flash as before.

The best cheap extended battery is trexcell or however it's spelled. With heavy use (music, YouTube, downloads, instagram, twitter etc. ) I get about 8 hours. Light use over a day.

oh ok then undervolting is definitely out of the question for me then.. the ones I bought was about 10 bucks for the battery, back to phone, and the wall charger peice. they seem to work good but like u as they will probably go out soonish. about the clean install, I used heimdall to install a fresh fe29, then put my cwm fixed on there, did my wipes, installed an ics rom (dont remember which one atm) did more wipes and flashed aokp. did i forget anything?

Ya when they get that cheap there bound to be fakes or just poor quality. After going threw about 4 generics in about 6 months I just opted for a OEM 1800mah and am very happy with them. Well looks like you did plenty of wipping lol. You should be good to go.
Also if there is still battery drain try betterbatterystats and cpu spy to make sure nothing is using alot of back ground data and the phone is deep sleeping good.

Some of the stats on betterbatterystats are hard to understand but googleing most stats will help you find out what it is. Cpu spy just monitors how your cpu is being used and can help with deep sleep issues.
I get great battery life on a 1800 oem. I normally get threw a full day on it with over 4 or 5 hours of screen on time. I would also give greenify and ds battery saver a try, I have had great results with using those 2 together.

I don't want to hijack, but I also want to offer my sincere thanks to this group.
I bought 3 Fassys back in the day one for myself, my son and my daughter. Mine and my daughter's are happily running AOKP JB and loving these "old" phones. My son had a mishap with his and needed to replace it. As he didn't ask for my opinion and we're clinging to our unlimited data, he bought an LG Revolution to taste some 4G goodness, then brought the phone to his old ma for roots and roms.
I don't really know *anything*, I just know how to read XDA, but he thinks I'm the phone guru.
Anyway, I figured that a new 4G snapdragon phone must have some JellyBean ROMs available, so I wandered over to the Revolution forum.
*crickets*
I figured out how to root it, but had to hand it back to my son and tell him that his fancy new phone was stuck with Gingerbread as there's just no JB ROM for it yet. The Revolution development is as dead as a red wedding guest.
It just made me appreciate what an AMAZING community of developers we have here for the Fassy!! I could easily choose from a dozen good JB ROMs and I have every reason to believe that this old phone will be eating up some Key Lime Pie before she gives up the ghost and heads to that great back corner of a dresser drawer in the sky.
THANK YOU!! To everyone who keeps this community thriving.
THANK YOU!! To everyone who recognizes that we have a fine device here and isn't jumping at the chance to make it obsolete.
It's because of you that I can continue to be too cheap to buy a new phone and still keep my unlimited data and not feel like I'm missing out on the cool new flavors of Android.
This old mama really appreciates you all!!

Best Kernel and Rom for Battery?

Hi Im an user from nexus 4 since 2 months ago .
since the first day i rooted and change my rom.
i used to use cyanogenmod 10.1 RC2 + Franco Kernel M2 or 134 these days.
when i updated the franco kernel my battery began to drain too much even when the phone was idle. so my battery died in less than 10 h!!!
so i come back with CM kernel and right now my battery is during like 1 day!
im thinking in use rasbean + trinity kernel but i dont know if i should to use faux, semaphore or other one.
i just want my phone to use social apps, calls and i wanna take care of my battery.
what do you recommend me?
Thank You!
Use whatever you like. Find what's best for you.

You won't get a proper answer to this because the question is completely subjective and experiences vary from user to user. It's the same as asking someone what the best colour is, there simply isn't any correct answer. I'm sure if 10 different people replied you'd receive at least 4 different suggestions.
I too was trying to only get the best battery solution for a couple of months. I ended up using PA with stock PA kernel because the performance was much more efficient, with improved battery life over stock.
okay thanks guys!
In all honesty I used to drive myself crazy with this question, then I realized that there are simply to many variables that are constantly changing from day to day. Now a days I just rock out and charge when I need too.....call me weird lol

S4 GT-I9505 Android System Drains battery

Any idea how to know whats running Using the android system. Its sending data somewhere i think and its draining my battery as well. Adds up heating my phone up as well.
My battery went down from 97% to the one indicated in the screenshot. Help please... Im beginning to hate android now with this lackluster battery life. This just happened yesterday. Everything was fone before that.
Sent from my GT-I9505 using Tapatalk 2
I think I have this problem too. Or I'm really paranoid about my battery. I did a factory reset a few days ago, but it was fine before that. Usually my screen is the #1 battery consumer, now Android System is 75%.
Did you update your firmware? I'm running ME2 and had no problems whatsoever before that.
I downloaded "battery stats plus" and the issue might be the "camera test"?
I dont think the firmware updated has something to do with it? Not sure though.
Sent from my GT-I9505 using Tapatalk 2
Downloaded that app, and Camera Test shows pretty high on mine as well. About 1,73% though, but with a bit over 5 hours without charging. It's been using my camera sensor 2 hours out of 5.
I think this is a really good case for the experts in the better battery stats thread. They have a special procedure to help you quickly solve the problem.
Read the OP, or if its a multiple post OP read them. It says exactly how to let the phone sit idle (i think I recall its 4 hours) and get some specific info and post it and they will help you narrow down exactly what's causing it but also give a solution.
I have a job interview in just a bit, and am in a hurry but wanted to share that with you.
I have an idea what the problem might be and those guys actually have a really good solution to fix it without having to eliminate anything and just changing some settings.

Looks like i fixed the issue somehow...
I think google and samsung apps might be the problem. Tried to open and setup to not use any data on all google and samsung apps. Namely google setting app, samsung hub, samsung link, Keis, etc.
Update them all via samsung hub and possibly download kies air from samsung app store. Was trying to setup them while charging the phone. Location based apps was also turned off for using gps or data. Turned off notifications on them as well unless you do want to be notified.
