[Q] Update after rooting - Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Dear gurus,
I'm new to Galaxy family, I have a small question. Provided that I have root access for S5 and using Stock ROM. Am I still able to OTA/Kies update?
The reason I want to root is to get rid of SamSung bloatwares and use custom kernel.
Thanks

No. You have to download firmware/rom updates then flash them to your phone now.

Using the phone for updates after rooting will cause you to lose all root access and then would just cause more problems. As stated before, you'll have to manually apply them once rooted.

Tks you all, I got it!

[Q] Just got my new s4 - OTA & Rooting

Hi there, I just got my new I9505. If I plan on rooting it over the next few days, should I install/not install the OTA update that was downloaded when I first switched my phone on.
I'm wondering if the new OTA will make gaining root access more complicated. I'd like to stay using TouchWiz for a few more weeks before I get CM or other ROMs, so is the update worth it?
Currently on XXUAMDF
Thanks

[Q] 4.3 AT&T root

Hello all,
I have a AT&T Samsung Galaxy S4 that just updated to 4.3. Can someone direct me to how I can gain root access? Also, I am assuming that noone has published a way to crack the bootloader as of yet? Thanks in advance for any help concerning this.

There are several methods of rooting 4.3 but outside of that you will NOT be able to install any custom ROM's, recoveries, etc.
However, these methods are unsupported by XDA as the authors are in China and haven't released vital information on the ingenuity of their program (in terms of privacy and security). Thus I am unable to post it here, however... a simple Google search will yield the program if you are willing to take the risk of a random Chinese company having who knows what data from your device. The only way to have avoided using these programs would have been to put SuperSU into survival mode prior to upgrading to MK2 (4.3).

Root help
I was looking to root AT&T MK2 4.3 S4 for 2 reasons. 1. to be able to tether 2. to be able to record calls. I read other threads but found that after root, I need to install Wanam xposed framework, and reviews show that both hacks don't successfully work on MK2.
Saferoot is probably is best root method for MK2 AT&T but Safestrap recovery does not appear to be as good as TWRP or CWM as ROM Slots are required and memory will not be used to fullest.
Please help, anyone has success with any root method to accomplish 1. tether 2. call recording successfully on MK2?
or Successful recovery install (TWRP or CWM ) so the custom ROMS like hyperdrive can be installed.
Thanks all...

Hi all.. Please help me with another question... (AT&T MK2 4.3 S4)
First I would like to thank all developers for great great work here and all members for sharing their experiences and suggestions...
Do I have to create ROM slot in order to flash Hyperdrive ROM and keep stock ROM as it is
OR I can backup and wipe stock ROM and flash hyperdrive over it, and keeping one active ROM?
Only reason I dont want to create ROM slot is that then I will not be using the whole memory, I want to use all16GB..
Also I am getting a security policy update pop up on phone, should I install it before rooting or just ignore it?
Please advise,
call recording
guys anyone knows if call recording works on MK2 4.3. It does not work on stock ROM using Wanam. The phone freezes. Not sure if it will work with any other ROM.

How to upgrade after root

HI.
I really liked the idea of keeping pretty stock (ie no custom rom).. but just tweaking with root / xposed etc.
But.. doing that I now cant install firmware upgrades...
Is it possible to remove root so that ota firmware upgrades work? Have no idea as in the past I've just had custom roms..
Thanks!

One of the mods will probably move this to Q&A as its where you should be asking this question.
Anyways if your sticking with stock and rooted but want to update the firmware as they come out you simply get it via a full firmware flash from Samsung's own Kies 3 software.
Doing this however breaks your root and any apps/mods that you've installed to the system partition however you can simply just re-root and reinstall any system apps/mods you happened to have installed there.
This is not a big deal and is generally quick and painless.
Also remember that if you use a custom recovery TWRP or CWM doing a full firmware flash will restore the stock recovery and you will half to re-flash that back as well.
You wont get notifications about updates however since your rooted and OTA gone. Just keep an eye on things for your specific device and region for updates. People generally post here on XDA about the new updates when their available as well as firmware update news from Sammobile.com
You can also plug your phone into your computer with Kies3 running and it will check to see if your on the latest firmware available as a way of manually checking.
II had the same doubt. Thank you for the clear explanation.

How to root Samsung galaxy A5

I have Samsung galaxy A5, SM-A500H. Running Android 5.0.2, downloaded from here. I want to root it.
The only root available right now AFAIK, is CF-Auto-Root, as described here for example. But this root breaks everything, all the apps stop running when you reboot the phone and you have reinstall the firmware, it doesn't work.
Is there another way to root my device?

the method you suggest, is great, i always wanted to know how that's done but can't do it, since it will require me to reflash the phone and reinstall the rom
This answer is for future users
first if you want to upgrade to 5.02
http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/database/SM-A500H/
I use the unknown carrier but you could pick any. just create an account there first.
and to root it, the only safe way, all other ways, it will break it, so again the only safe way to root that thing

didn't work before, now is working, download the apk, root it, takes 5 min, restart your phone, have a nice day

Installing updates on rooted rom without losing data and keeping root (G950F)

Hi guys,
so, I rooted my phone after installing Pie, but now among other things I wont be recieving any OTA updates, whats is the simplet way to just update the phone?
From what I read here on XDA I think thats best way is to install via Odin with home_csc but my question is when my phone is rooted will it still have root or it will even boot? Did somebody of you tried this?
I will be very gratefull for any suggestions to this topic.
