Bootloader JB v KK - Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm on stock android 4.3,rooted with a tripped knox.
Will my bootloader always be 4.3 until I flash official kitkat rom?
Will/can custom KK roms change my bootloader?
Thanks

You have to upgrade bootloader through Odin if you want to flash kk custom ROMs. Custom ROMs doesn't contain bootloader as far as I know.
So yes, your bootloader will be 4.3 until you flash 4.4 with Odin.

There are some custom ROMs that provide links to JUST the bootloader itself, which you can flash by yourself in Odin, without flashing stock ROM.

Thanks for that guys but I don't want to change my bootloader, want to keep it as JB.
I tried a few KK roms and experienced problems with them, was just wondering if it was because I had JB BL.
I need to find a custom rom with JB BL now.................
Thanks

Android 4.4.2 and MDL bootloader on I337

I have I337 with MDL bootloader. Omega 19 (4.3), MK2 GSM modem and MDL LTE modem.
New Omega 20 based on leaked 4.4.2 come.
I read Omega 20 installation notes than it works only with new 4.4.2 bootloder.
Does this means that the only way to install 4.4.2 is wait i337 4.4.2 stock, flash it and use safe strap.
PS
Is LOKI kernel for 4.4.2 TW available?
Was kinda wondering this myself.
I'm on 4.4.2 GE ROM, I assume just flashing a 4.4 ROM updates your bootloader but strangely I don't see any 4.4 TW ROMs in our Dev section yet?
Was hoping somebody has flashed an Intl 4.4 ROM with loki-doki and all was good.

Flashing a rom only updates the system and kernel. The modem, bootloader, and recovery stay intact. Odin packages contain the bootloader and modem. These are all on separate partitions.
The 4.4.2 released was a i9505 rom and only for them. You can be on an older bootloader and flash newer android version roms but you can't do the opposite and say flash a 2.3 rom while you on a 4.0 rom.
Also most people don't want the permanence of being stuck on a leak release and not being able to go back.

Ahh ok, so I really do still have an MDL bootloader huh (even though I've flashed different modems).
But I can switch from a 4.4 GE/CM ROM to any 4.3 or 4.2.2 if I choose, so what do you mean not being able to go back?

MDL was the second update I believe (right after release) for 4.2.2 before the the lock. Once you update the bootloader on these lock bootloaders (even MDL is locked, just has a loki work around) you can't go back. The bootloaders are going to be locked and you wont be able to flash a Odin .tar and go back. You are on there. YOu can flash 4.4 roms on a 4.2.2 bootloader but not a 4.2 rom on a 4.4 bootloader.
Alrighty, so to answer OP's question.
You should be fine to flash new Omega with a wipe of Cache/Davlik/System/Data followed by loki-doki.

not unless he is okay being stuck with a he new bootloader knowing he cant go to another rom unless its a 4.4
Omega (and all custom ROMs) wouldn't include the bootloader as you mentioned in your first reply...

It's true.
I am confused by what I read in the installation Instructions for Omega v20:
Installation:
1. Backup your device (nadroid backup, titanium backup, efs backup ... etc) and save the backup to a safe place.
2. Flash the new bootloder and modems with odin -> I9505XXUFNA1_Bootloader_Modems.tar

Upgrade from 4.2.2 to 4.3+ without getting Knox

I am on stock 4.2.2 now, rooted.
I would like to install stock 4.3 or try a 4.4 rom. What are my options for doing this? Is there a stock 4.3 ROM I can flash with cwm that doesn't bring knox and the new bootloader? Is the new bootloader (and knox) absolutely necessary for going 4.4?
stock firmware i get from www.sammobile.com, the questions have been answered a countless times before

If you are still in 4.2.2 stock rom with an Oldbootloader like me Feel free to flash a Pre-rooted BMGA rom from Djembey thread and Flash a Custom recovery and you can flash any Custom 4.3 rom you want..But if you dont give a deym about Voiding your warranty then feel free to flash a Stock 4.3 rom and get your self a Newbootloader and if you wanna flash a 4.4.2 Kitkat leak then you can no longer downgrade to stock 4.3 and your warranty is now void. but you can still downgrade to custom 4.3 roms. Have a nice day.

P.S. correct me if I'm wrong, but I think there are pre-rooted 4.3 stock firmware with no Knox, so you can enjoy stock without Knox. Not entirely sure, you'll have to search it up.
Smack that Thanks button if I helped!
KitKat came in on my OmniROM, running on my Note 2.
Sent from a small country called Singapore.
P.S. Time for school, not much time for XDA

Took a look at the Djembey thread, but unsure which firmware to choose. There are quite a few to choose from... I need the latest 4.3 or 4.4 I can install with cwm without new bootloader or knox.

You cannot downgrade the rom after you have odin flashed any 4.4.2 rom.
But you can flash any compatible cwm/twrp custom roms which are 4.4.2 or newer.
You cannot go back/downgrade to 4.3 roms.
Good luck!

Ur first sentence is right, but the rest isn't.
When he flashed only the Google Edition from Jamal( a custom ROM over recovery) and never the leak before, he got not the new bootloader. So he can downgrade if he wants.
When u flashed the new leak u can always downgrade on 4.3 Custom ROM via backup.

You cannot downgrade from 4.4.2 to 4.3 and if you have a 4.3
nandroid backup you cannot restore it either.
You will only be able to upgrade or flash 4.4.2 roms and newer
versions of android roms/firmwares.
Oh, one more thing there is no such thing as "denox" LOL
Good luck!

Yeah you can flash Stock via ODIN or you can install CWM/TWRP and use a custom recovery. -- Make sure REACTIVATION LOCK is OFF before you do anything or it won't work.

[Q] Downgrade

I know that impossible with 4.4.2 downgrade to 4.2.2 without box. But if I have a custom recovery, is it possible flash a CM 4.2.2 for example? Or other custom rom 4.2.2?
GT-I9505 with stock 4.3

You can flash any custom rom you want thru the CWM , what you cannot do is flash an older bootlader that you have (odin) , custom rom do not have bootloaders
for all roms have a description on how to install and whether it is necessary or not
