[Q] How to backup everything - G2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I wish to update my Android version, and have done this several times before, but each time I had to manually reinstall my apps and I would lose the app settings and (game) progress made.
I am rooted and have TWRP installed.
How can I back-up all the apps with settings, images, messages (sms/ whatsapp)?
My biggest problem is that my phone has very little storage left, so how can I back these things up to my PC?
Afterwards the upgrade I want to restore these as well.
Thank you
Michael

Try an app called helium. It lets you back up to cloud based storage

You can use an external program such as Titanium Backup for the apps and associated data needing to be saved (mainly games). It can also save your sms, call logs and wifi access points. I don't know for WhatsApp.
I once used Helium, but it failed restoring some games, I never had a problem with Titanium.
If you synchronise your applications in your google sync settings, all your apps from playstore should be automatically downloaded after first account add.
It is not generally recommended to restore apps, it can cause problems, so I recommend you to save only the apps with data/settings you cannot change manually or hard to retrieve. That won't take too much space. I usually only save games, or apps not coming from playstore/amazon appstore..., and sms, call logs and wifi access points. Then, once all the apps downloaded, i go into every one individually to change settings or log into (facebook, ...) according to my needs, that does not take too long generally.

No Backup. no HardReset. No Gmail. stupid

this is incredible.
my google apps have stopped working, so i can't access the market or gmail.
I have deleted all the data in the application, so that i can reenter my credentials, but now it won't connect via 3G, Gprs or Wifi. "no stable connection available"
meaning i can't install a backup app, so that i could do the hard reset and configure again.
i can't backup in restore mode, because i have the new ROM, so it fails.
What is wrong with android? retarded? why can't i backup from my PC?
I have been long enough on WMobile to know how not easy and not intuitive it can be,
but give me a break.
does anyone know a solution how i can make gmail and the market again without having to loose all my settings, apps etc...?
Google never made a backup app.
Third party developers can not access the Google apps to back up the data within them, as they are closed source.
various other reasons....
looks to me like you are going to have to start from scratch... and watch out for that google apps thing, never clear the data on that thing cos you will get that exact error and HR is the only way out....
not fun, but there it is.
thanks rhedgehog for your quick reply
Thing is that my Gmail app stopped working, it didn't sync anymore 1week+
i searched for solutions on the net, and found that alot of people succeded with deleting their gmail data, and reentering their credentials.
I thought android was finally the answer to a simpler way to use your phone, but this is a step back imho.
solution
Well i found the cure to my disease...
i downloaded myBackup directly from the internet, and copied it to my SD-Card where i installed it from. made the backup, reset the device, installed myBackup again, recovered everything.
now Gmail, Market, etc works again, and i have all my apps and Data.
just watch out when using that before an update. it's third party so there's no guarantee it will work across ROM updates...in fact i know some people had major problems with that over the 1.76 - 2.73 update.

Easy full / total / complete backup option?

OK - here's the deal. I hope I'm not posting redundantly...
I've tried several ROMs in the past week and I have to say that changing each one is a tedious process. With each new one, I've used Titanium to backup everything. But even with Titanium, I always lose my call records, SMS other than what's in Google Voice, keyboard preferences, dictionary (the words I enter into HTC's dictionary), ALL email accounts, language preferences, app layout and scenes, and even some apps are lost because Titanium can't recover them. I especially hate losing the individual dictionary. WORST OF ALL IS THE EMAIL ACCOUNT LOSS. Having to setup Exchange, Yahoo, GMail each time even with a tiny change in the ROM really sucks. Titanium restore takes something like an hour and for each one I have to approve each app, even though I do it in batch mode. So that kind of defeats the purpose of BATCH.
I backup my 2.1 SMS and call records with SMS Backup and Call log backup apps, but neither one successfully restores on Froyo. So I've lost 6 months worth of call logs and SMS because of incompatibilities with Froyo.
This time, I'm also doing a Nandroid + Titanium. But as I said, those won't save my email accounts, call records, SMS records, dictionaries, keyboard preferences, layout and scenes, some apps and many other things...
The one thing I liked about BlackBerry (probably the ONLY good thing) was the backup - it saved everything.
My question is: is there an all-encompassing total & complete backup solution for Android? If not, then I just don't think I'll be updating ROMs very frequently because I simply don't have an hour to waste approving app restoration in Titanium and all that other crap (Install--> Done --> Install --> Done x 100 apps is ridiculous!).
I use Titanium for all my apps and MyBackup Pro for my SMS, Bookmarks, ect... http://www.appbrain.com/app/com.rerware.android.MyBackupPro
Good Luck

Click to collapse
Come off the cake and donate to the devs of Titanium. Restoring your programs becomes automatic then.
The only thing I don't get a consistent restore on is the home page layouts.
app backing up and restoring is awesome if you donate to titanium devs. it is definitely on the top of my list of awesome paid apps. 1 click backup and restore is only available if you donate along with a nice boost in speed in the app. Also, there is a nice feature in titanium that allows you to create a unsigned zip to flash titanium as an app right after you flash the rom, so on your first boot you already have it to restore apps in case you dont have 3g or wifi access.
i have heard good things about mybackup as well for sms and call log, but i have only used it once because now all my texts and calls are in gvoice, so no restoring needed there.
as far as email goes, i dont mind setting my accounts back up nor losing my dictionary. thats about the only thing that i have to redo every time i flash a new rom.

[q] how to backup and restore android after flashing

So i am a frequent flasher, i like to try different ROMs and I have a problem with recovering my data. It seems to be a huge pain in the ass with android. With Win Mo it was simple, one click on SPB backup and everything was restored. Not on Android.
I am using only Desire HD or Z based ROMS, currently NAND wit SD IMG. I am looking for a simple way how to backup and restore following settings:
1. CONTACTS - and I mean all contacts with all detail. I have my contacts synched with FB, Twitter, LinkedIn, Skype etc. Google sync and HTC Sense pretends that its synched, but after flash, only basic google contact is synced and I have to manually add all the login info for those services and then wait for them to be asociated and then asociate those that were not connected manually.
2. SMS - this could be solved by using SMS backup, but it would be nice not to have a special application for that. I also have suspicion, that sometimes this is restored from cloud and sometimes not. After one flash, I thought that my sms are lost, because i didnt backup them. After another flash, they miraculously reapeared without me doing anything. WTF?
3. Call log
4. EMAIL SETTINGS - I dont want to set up all the email after each flash.
5. Apss and Data - yeas, this could be done by several apps, smallest problem.
6. System DATA - by that i mean mostly my homescreen setup, wifi settings, bookmarks, RSS feeds, calendar, tasks etc. Something seems to be synced by google, something not. Some apps do that, but after restore, they mess up whole system and cause repeated errors (acore etc.)
IS THERE A ONE APP ONE CLICK SOLUTION FOR THAT?
What pisses me most is the inability of Gmail or HTCSENSE to sync all the information of my contacts. WTF? WHy it cant store all the info, pictures etc. WHy even HTC sense couldnt do it? WHat the hell is HTC SYNC good for, when only option to sync contacts with PC is to sync them to Outlook, whioch is not even available in windows anymore!
I tried several apps and they mostly fail. When tried My Backup Root to backup contacts, it created 800 duplicated contacts out of 300 and when google sync steps in the way during that, it will even mess up your data on the cloud. When i tried to restore system settings with this app I ended up with broken system with error every second.
I dont know how to force Titanium to backup my system data, or SMS and I doubt its possible. When I selected batch full apps+data backup, it didnt recovered even my homescreen setup.
Is it really ncessary to fiddle with my phone for several hours after each flash to get it into previous shape?
the answer is pretty simple
use this application 'mybackup pro'
and install it then you can configure how to backup
it will backup all your app and data
and when you flash a new rom you can restore everything
android is cool
i'm cool too
Is mybackup pro better than titanum backup ?
As far as i get it, My Backup Pro is paid version of My Backup Root which messed my contacts and caused my system to crash after restoring system settings.

[Q] Titanium Backup Pro restores apps to wrong gmail account

I flash roms not so often as crack flashers. But when I do, or even if I just have to do a factory reset (say, if I want to change the main google account, mainly to prioritize which gets to use the built-in google Talk), I come across Market link issues with TB Pro.
The account I want the apps linked with is NOT the primary google account. It used to be before but I made a new email and such. So I checked the proper settings in TB, such as always associate apps to selected active profiles, etc. But when I restore it is mixed between the two accounts. Some apps will be linked to one account or even both.
I've tried many things. I used market doctor to no avail. I killed market links, wiped data from Market in both Settings and in TB. I've tried rebooting several times. Now I am just going to uninstall/reinstall to see if it will associate to the selected market account.
Sometimes all the apps will link to the right account. But then later on it will be mixed again, or just show some apps as uninstalled or missing. But when I search for them in Market it shows it as installed.
I hope someone has a definite solution for this. I have searched XDA and checked the TB wiki. Thanks in advance.
Did selecting the account to use in TB preferences> account for android market not work? That is the reason it's there, I'm assuming.
Sent from my HTC Glacier using XDA App
Yeah i checked it to the right account. But sometimes it reverts back to bring mixed.
Right now it's fine. I had to uninstall everything, check the TB settings, and reinstall. I also made sure the account was selected in the Market app.
But after making a backup in recovery, some apps weren't linked. But market doctor fixed it.
Still, i wonder what makes the apps become linked to different accounts afterwards.. Or lose its links.

Titanium backup

Hey guys. So everyone on XDA recommends using titanium backup to restore not only all your apps but it advertises that you can backup and restore the app data too across ROMs like wow how exciting. Yeah....
It doesn't work though..... Am I missing something?! It doesn't work. It works for restoring back the apps yes but it does not restore back the data for the apps at all and that's the MOST important aspect of it. Google play store can restore all your apps too but you have to re sign in to all the things like Snapchat WhatsApp etc like Gmail every app you have to re sign in re add accounts and that's what titanium backup advertises as the feature but it isn't true or I am doing something wrong.
Does titanium app data restore work for you guys?
I've been restoring from a data directory that goes back 6 phones and started in 2011. Yes it work and works well. Some apps are easy andmindless and some not at all. It does seem like in the last couple years, security in apps keep many from restoring the full experience including intact logins. I don't really know a lot about the mechanics of the program but it's not really that complicated. I'm not sure why your having issues.
Sent from my Nexus 6P using XDA-Developers Legacy app
What specific apps are you having issues with restoring data? From my experience, using titanium backup for as far back as I can remember, most apps restore just fine as long as you tell titanium backup to backup both app and data.
That said, I've noticed some games, like clash of clans and such use online game data and those never backup, but once you log back into the game, it's all there. The Google default SMS app doesn't back up your text messages by default, but if you scroll down the app list in titanium backup there is an option for "Messages (SMS/text)" I believe it's called that backs those up.
List your apps and I'll see if I can find a way to get data.
