Onto my 3rd factory reset due to battery drain! - Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello folks,
I've had the Rogers Galaxy S 5 for about a week now, and since day 1 I have noticed excessive battery drain by "Android System". This source of drainage occurs especially during idle periods of time causing me to experience rather poor battery performance.
This here is a sample of what my battery stats look like at any given time, notice "Android System" is virtually always the number 1 source of battery consumption.

I executed a factory reset on the second day of ownership to examine whether this drain would be solved. It wasn't.
I went to bed, and woke up in the morning to check Gsam Battery monitor which gave me this chart:
Notice the part I highlighted in red which demonstrates the overnight battery usage!
Also, GSAM battery monitor still displays "Android System" as the source of the drain.
Among my colleagues I am the only one experiencing this phenomenon, and I am going to factory reset for the third time right now.
Going to run the stock firmware to see whether I am still experiencing this.
I will report back with any new findings soon, hold on tight to your seats!

I suggest you do the following,
-Disable Location in the notification drop down
-Turn off Hot Word detection for Google Voice Commands.
-Disable bloatware
-Turn off always active WiFi in advanced WiFi settings.

AND,
Try giving it a week to 'settle' without resetting it...
It needs to figure itself out...
All my family member noticed significantly better battery AFTER 1st week.

Certainly performed all of the above right after factory reset! Battery still dropped over 10% overnight on standby.

Makes sense, I will run a few charge cycles!

Take a look I am running SC 2.4 and I had my data on and I went to 79 percent battery in a little over an hour mostly on standby just now I charged my phone to 100 percent and its at 90 while leaving wifi on and a phone call

EB01 has a bug in its sensor code, so turning off AutoRotate will help. It's still not a WHOLE lot better, but it's at least serviceable that way.
Hopefully, the rumors about the update/OTA were true, and we'll see an updated build (EB09 is sticking in my brain for some weird reason, but don't take that as anything real) that fixes the sensor code and anything else that's eating up battery.
Did you do all the flashing when at 100% battery? It's possibly your battery stats are just inaccurate.
Let the phone charge to 100%, then with the phone still plugged in, shut it down so you get JUST the charging screen, and let that go to 100%. Then, boot into CWM and delete battery stats, and then go back to the powered-off-charging-screen and let it go back to 100%, then boot back into your OS. Some people recommend draining the battery most all the way, then charging it back up, but I'm not sure if that's really necessary.
Also, apparently there's a GPS bug in EB01 which causes it not to sleep, which'll drain your battery fast as well (though I don't see the GPS icon on your screen). You might also have some battery hog in the background slaughtereing battey life (the battery use screen might be able to lend some help for that).
Try using an app called juice defender, I found it to help my battery a lot.
SC 2.4 hides the icon.
I was getting a wakelock from Android System earlier today, but that has finally resolved itself and my phone is sleeping now.
I am not a noon so I know about wiping batt stats and did that I have used juice defender before but I just don't see a whole reason that it should drain that quick

No issues with battery life AT ALL with EB01. In fact, the BEST battery life I've EVER gotten, even better than Adrynalyne's UV kernels (no offense bud)
Yesterday, I unplugged around 10, got off work work at 830, was home by about 930, and STILL had some 34% left, 11 hours later. I'VE NEVER been able to go that long on a single charge. And I leave auto-rotate on.
What REALLY helped me, was turning off the GPS when not in use. MAN....what a difference !!!!

[Q] Sudden battery life change

Hello,
I've experienced a sudden change in battery performance.
What used to take around 50% of battery now takes around 85%.
It happened recently, around the same time I started working at a new workplace. The reception is horrible there, maybe that's the issue. However during the weekends, it is around the same.
I was on 4.4.2 stock when it happened and since then I've flashed it again once. I've also tried a couple of different radios (and enabled LTE) and I've always had franco kernel.
Brightness was always on Auto (which I shall turn off to experiment battery life) and wifi is selected to be off when the phone is off.
I have still a few more experiments to do, but I'm considering using warranty services. What do you guys think? It's clearly not as bad as some of the other battery issues I've seen on this forum, but it's quite the change for me. I bought this phone in July 2013.
Here is an example battery usage graph. Charging finished around 1 AM and left it unplugged over night. In the morning (~7 hours) the percentage was at 75%. (5% / hr) Throughout the day, I have used it for text messaging only and by 6 pm, it's at around 13%.
Thanks for taking the time to read my long post.

You can check what drains battery with BetterBatteryStats. Google it and you'll find.
Thanks for replying.
I have tried that before an OS reset although I couldn't make much out of it. One main thing I noticed was a certain kernel wakelock which, after I googled, was responsible for LTE connectivity. Although this makes sense, I had good battery life even with the LTE chip being used (& auto brightness / wifi always on) prior to this battery incident. By good battery life, I mean 50-60% used by the end of the day

S4 high battery consumption

hi guys,
im troubleshooting my battery problem on this phone. just need some thoughts.
the drain is over 2%/hr when the phone is in sleep with flight mode on and nfc on.

the day before i tried this with the network on nfc on, data and wifi off and the consumption was about the same.
i have yet to try flight mode on and nfc off, but i wouldn't think that nfc would use that much.
i use greenify to put a lot of apps to hibernate so they wont wake the phone.
starting to think my battery isnt performing right anymore.

17% in 6.5hrs, airplane mode, no nfc.
the phone is definitely going to sleep.
i could leave the network on and nfc too, difference isnt big at all.
any idea is appreciated. leaning towards bad battery here..

Why not remove all the extra apps, and see if anything changes. Then, you can install one by one when things are clearer.
i would believe if an app cause the drain with the screen off then it is probably causing a wake lock.
which doesnt show at all. is there any otherway an app can drain the battery without wakelock?

I don't really see drain? 2% an hour is not that much. In my opinion it's normal.
If you insist on lowering it, then try the following:
- Different rom
- Different modem
- New battery
And search for some guides to lower your battery usage.
You have to experiment yourself.
it didnt use that much before. in 15 hrs i got a bit over an hour screen time before it hit 0.
anyway, just loaded romswitcher, going to see if it happens with CM too. and airplane mode on.
starting to think the battery is going bad already

I average about 0.5% drain during sleep.
See the link in my signature to find out how. I've got a whole guide.
Have you checked the serial number on your battery? If it starts with BD then it's stuffed Samsung should still swap it for free I think.
thanks for all the replies guys.
yes 0.5 drain should be normal when it sleeps.
just tried this using CM rom and it looks all good there, so its not the battery.
going to remove some experimental settings in greenify to see if that helps.

Constant awake bug after full charge

I just found a pretty interesting bug that causes my G935FD phone to be constantly awake after a full charge, but will happily go into deep sleep after I restart the phone after the full charge. It reflects in the GSam Battery monitor as well as the battery life.
Maybe someone who has issue with the phone constantly awake (or very high Android System battery usage) can try this trick out. My software version is:
Baseband: APD1
Build: APDQ
My phone is rooted if it makes any difference.
Here are some examples:
After 10 mins charging and before reboot:

And after a quick reboot:
may b this is the cause
may be this is the cause of pathetic battery life on my phone. do u suggest a restart while still plugged in or after unplugging? Know any permanent fix for this?

I reboot them after unplugging.
I've just found this work around recently (as you can see my pathetic average doze time per charge).
Will try this for a few days to see if it helps.
Have you tried to wipe cache ? cause i've had the exact same problem over and over again and in my case it only happened with wireless charger. After I wiped cache partition it never happened again.
It is google backup bug. Turn off google backup and it should be gone.
Or restart your phone after each full charge.
Edit: it affects other phones too

Wow this is a colossal bug.
Yeah, it affects two of my phones, S6 and S7 edge!

sudden battery drain

I installed Resurrection Remix 5.6.9 two days ago and thing have been GREAT until this afternoon.
On the way home from, I suddenly noticed my battery started draining way too fast.
Tonight, I've been monitoring, and it's lost the same amount of battery in less than an hour as it did all last night unplugged 7 hours while I slept.
I installed gsam battery monitor in the hopes it would provide me with more inromation than the standard battery info from Android settings menu, but it's not telling me much more.
Also, in the time from 8:50 - 9:10 that I had the screen off and phone unplugged, the phone is warm like I've had the screen on using a CPU intensive app.
What else can I do to track what is causing this battery drain? (and i'm assuming CPU usage).
The only thing I did today that was any different was to install the Asus Pixelmaster camera app from the play store. other than that, absolutely no different usage today than the past two days.
I have just now uninstalled the Asus camera app to see if that is the culprit, but I don't see how it could be.
This is my first go with Resurrection Remix, but I did use the Asus Pixelmaster camera on CM13 and (obviously) stock and stock rooted ROMs.
Please, any thoughts on this?
@BigBrosMo this might interest you as well.

Craziness.... Not the camera. Something in cyanogen. The flat a section is airplane mode.
i could not track down what was causing the problem. this morning was even worse - about 1% drain every two to three minutes .
i'm trying out the XOSP ROM now.
I noticed if i turn the wifi off the drain is reduced significantly. Bluetooth is on, cellular on, wifi off.
Did you get any further in diagnosing battery loss? It's taking forever for RR 5.7.1 to get released.
I am having this issue to! On a couple roms at that. Anything you have found to resolve this?

No.. I just keep trying different Roms. I use resurrection remix latest and it's ok as long s location is completely off. If on high accuracy or battery Saver it kills battery. So I only use sparingly.
huh... so odd. I was excited about this one but I am getting ADs now and the battery issues. Had the same thing in Resurrection and now XOSP. In my troubleshooting, I installed an original ROM and that seemed to run fine. Going to see if someone deodexed one and flash that...
Take a look at this
It may be with 'Keep Wi-Fi on during sleep' activity. Set it to 'Never'.
OR
Step A: Set 'can modify system settings' of 'Xender' in 'modify system settings' to off.
(But by keeping this off, everytime Xender prompts 'allow changing settings' and you need to allow it to use the app. After the use, you need to again do the Step A)
