[Q] Any Killer App? - Nexus 10 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi mates,
I have my N10 since the invention of the wheel (meaning, since it was first released) but I have it a home doing nothing, once in a while I use it to netflix or youtube, not even for gaming since I have also an N5 which covers most of my mobile necessities and since the N10 has no data plan, even gaming outside of wifi coverage is imposible.
So, being that said, I'd like to know if you guys know any killer app that makes the N10 the one choice over the N5 or a laptop, I don't want to sell my N10 I just want to find the value I can give it.
Thanks in advance.
Peace

Interesting comments as I have both a Nexus 5&10 but in regards to media consumption I primarily use my Nexus 10. While my Nexus 5 is only used as a phone/sms, for grocery lists and as a music player when on public transport.
Media consumption that I'm referring to:
Rss news and Web browsing
YouTube, Netflix, recorded TV shows (MythTV) via Wifi/Ethernet adapter/microSD card
Ebooks
Remote control for my audio equipment (media server)
Steaming music/videos from the Internet and/or my NAS
I do have a few games that are all HD quality and prefer my Nexus 10 due to screen size.
Using a small screen for viewing text or video content seems like too much of a compromise. But of course that's personal preference.
Sorry for not answering your question but you seemed to have already eliminated any of my reasons for owning a Nexus 10 or even one of the smaller tablets.

Thanks a lot, will try doing that, although is a bit uncomfortable to browse with such large device

Hi,
There are some things I do on my Nexus 10 that cannot be replaced easily with the Xperia Z1. First is running Fedora OS on it as dual boot (LinuxOnAndroid), the screen size with a bluetooth mouse and keyboard makes it my laptop replacement easily . Also, watching videos with those stereo speakers and QuadHD screen quality is way better than a 5" FHD screen with a more or less quality audio.
Another point was ebooks, but since I have a Kindle I don't use Nexus too much for it, but reading some news articles and such on Nexus cannot be ignored, it's pleasantly good and some manga with smaller font I prefer using the better resolution of Nexus other than Kindle.
I think that's pretty much it .

Could I ask for some tips regarding Linux On Android? Have you found an optimal resolution? I set up Ubuntu 13.10 today. I've been trying different resolutions and androidVNC Input Modes, but nothing has satisfied me yet.
I do have a BT mouse and keyboard. Laptop replacement sounds awesome!
I'll see if Fedora feels better than Ubuntu. Of note, I am a linux noob, so that is a limitation if advanced customizations are required to bring this together. Pointing me in the right direction is greatly appreciated.

Hi,
First, for the optimal resolution I recommend you to use expanded desktop (if you're on Cyanogenmod just long press Power Button and it'll be there, if not there are some apps that can do it, if I'm not wrong this app does it: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.phoenixstudios.aiogestures ). Then with this option on you'll input the 2560x1600 resolution.
To make it better as a laptop replacement (at least for basic things like LibreOffice and web) you'll need an app called Jump Desktop, as it supports the two mouse buttons. Then connect it and login, and there you are, a 10" "laptop" with a super high resolution! Keep in mind that running Android and Ubuntu will use some power so it's not very fluid, but I can use easily and feels pretty good!
Also, I started to use Fedora 3-4 months after installing Ubuntu (complete Linux noob at that time), and changed completely 2 or 3 months later. It's up to you, as on laptop you have to configure graphics card, packages, etc. it's harder to use, but on tablet as you get most installed, I prefer Fedora for being faster .

Thanks for the quick feedback!
Edit: Sweet! I had Jump Desktop in my Amazon account, a free app of the day at some point in the last few years. Yes, Jump is more polished for sure.
Edit x2: The All in one gestures did the job, like you said, for getting rid of the soft keys on my stock ROM. My >40 year old eyes need half the resolution though.
Thanks again for the tips! And, Fedora does feel better. . .

I'm slowly migrating my navigation et al to my N10, for I know is a beast tablet and doesn't seem fair to have spent that much coin and don't use it.
Question: Do you mates got to find a good, strong metal/aluminum keyboard/w/,w/o case) for the N10? I have one with soft keys that doens't encourages to use it.
Thanks in advance.

I bought this keyboard a few months ago: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00BKW2410/ref=oh_details_o03_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1. Works very well, and I love it because it's super thin and light, and IMO, the buttons give good feedback. Doesn't come with a case, but it's a quality piece. I use it with my Nexus 5, 7 (2013) and 10.

Math Teacher seeking Tablet!

Hi Everyone,
I am looking for tablet advice. I am a high school math teacher who teaches using SMARTboards. If you've never heard of this, it's basically a giant white board that is also a touchscreen (picture a 6 foot tablet mounted to the wall). It mirrors the PC in my classroom (via a projector mounted on the ceiling), and allows lots of fun interactive opportunities with my students. However, I am stuck at the front of the room with my back to my kids a lot. I want to change all that, so I want to buy a tablet to control the PC (which in turn controls the SMARTboard).
What I am seeking requires a tablet that could take over a Windows XP PC (wirelessly I assume - we do have WiFi access). Any suggestion on good apps for remote access would be appreciated here, but also I want to know this - would this system seem to be a good one with the Nexus 7?
Do you guys think the screen is large enough for this sort of application (solving math problems with a stylus, and this would be projected onto a large screen for my kids to see)? Or would you think a 10" screen would be better?
Also, would this idea work, technologically? WiFi access of PC... this should allow writing on the tablet to write on the PC... SMARTboard would then show what I'm writing since it is a clone of the PC screen... I just need to make sure that I can easily control programs remotely from the tablet.
I know this may sound like a mess, but I really want to do my homework before spending money I don't otherwise NEED to spend. My smartphone (EVO 4G LTE) does all I need right now, but this would be a toy that I can also use daily for work. Thanks for any input you guys have! Feel free to ask questions if what I said didn't make perfect sense. I just know that XDA is the place to go for tech questions, and this is an awesome community.
Check out this app called Jump Desktop on the Google play store, might be what you're looking for.

Splashtop 2 is really good, works great with my computer.
A 7in screen should be fine if the app in question can zoom, or you dont mind less space.
I notice that with my remote desktop it doesnt matter if im zoomed in unless i try to name a file, or if im using photoshop to paint.
Realvnc for the win !

I would imagine the smartboard uses its own software, could you list the boards make/model? We might be able to help out a bit more. Otherwise you'll just be connecting your tablet to your computer via remote desktop and then using it to control your smartboard. I would imagine you would definitly lose some functionality that way and it would be hard to control with the small screen.
I would suggest either getting a netbook or small laptop and just face the class using it or get a stool to set it on, or to go to the google play store online and see if your smartboard has an app.
Good luck
That app has great reviews - and is cheap too! Thank you for the suggestion! I wish I could test out this system first, haha. Oh well, I'm sure there's a return policy I can use if something won't work.

I have done this actually
I love my nexus but i do NOT think its big enough..
when my arm was in a sling from surgery for over 5 months.. I would use SPLASH TOP .
My tablet was a 10 inch Acer a500 tablet connected thru my netgear wifi router in close proximity . to my Wired connection on the same router. With HDMI MIRROR to 42 INCH HD TV.. i used handwriting and photo shop on the tv screen . i think the 10 inch tablet was ok but the hand writing is hard because of the size of the screen on the tablet Drawing something say the 3 inches tall 1 letter on the tablet will show up as 4 feet tall on that display ..
Your software could have some zoom features in it to correct this. Other wise it would be difficult to make it work... its hard for my to explain the issue .
very doable if your program on the computer can overcome the zoom issue.. i THINK This is what the post above mine was saying..

+1 for Splashtop, but I would imagine there is some sort of Smartboard app specifically for Android devices. If there is such an app, that would probably be your best bet, but I don't know.
Splashtop on the other hand was the smoothest remote control software I've used. It's free as well (as long as your using it on a local network).

if there is a app for the smart board then a 7 in tablet will likely work .. the issue is the resolution and more so pixel density .. If the app will let you project say 1-4 ratio or what ever you need to make it work and resize then you could have a winner...
we use something similar to that smart board at work for blue prints..
ohh and +1 more for splash top Its best and i have tried them all.. the issue could lie in the speed and network ability of the xp pc
Unfortunately there is no SmartBoard app yet. Apple is getting one this fall, and Android MAY in the future. As for now, u can't bank on that.
I'm thinking the Samsung Tab 2 10.1 would be a good choice. Or maybe I should look into Windows Tablets... Hmm.

I cosign those who said Splashtop and for a tablet, I would recommend a Transformer over the Galaxy Tab.

If you can wait till october- November I suggest you look into windows 8 tablet/PC which could do all of your computer functions with pen input and run all your computer applications.
I have a friend who is also an elementary school teacher and I recommended this device to her as she is also using the smartboard. I haven't used it myself but I think the size of screen is good for it unless you also already have a 10 inch tablet. But to each is own I know I write extremely small and she is more of a bubbly letter kind of gal so I can fit write more you could say.

I checked out tablets at Fry's Electronics today... 7" is definitely too small for this application.
Does anyone else have issues with accuracy of the styli out there today? I tried a few tablets and a few styli... I couldn't write an equation to save my life! It kept not reading it or appearing slightly above or below where I wanted. Then I tried the S pen on the Sammy Note 10.1... It was incredible! It was like writing on paper with a pencil! I don't wanna spend that much, but man that thing was incredible... I think that's what I may need.
Thanks for all of the help guys! Any other tips are still appreciated but I'm pretty sure I won't be a Nexus 7 owner...

Also they have clickers with a program that yo ask questions and they key in the answer and you can see who is right/Wong and what answer they had. Hope I helped!

Can the Note 2 replace the Laptop for the casual user....?!?

The original Note was a success...
Now the Note 2 has twice the power, 2 GB Ram, better/bigger screen, enhanced S-Pen, a much better battery life and many more new/exciting features. I think it's safe to say that it is twice or maybe even thrice as good than the original note and now much more is possible to do on the new Note 2.
For someone who mostly uses the laptop for surfing the web, listening to music, watching videos reading ebooks/pdf and travels often carrying the laptop around, Can the Note 2 be genuinely considered a laptop replacement device for a casual laptop user....?!?
Kindly also vote in the Poll.
Thanks
Yes
Depending what for you use your laptop, as for me even Htc One X can replace laptop, not for world of warcraft or to working with laptop thought but browsing, reading and low gaming it can replace and much better than htc one X i think

Yes mostly for the browsing and media. You can manipulate files without too much hassle too (simple things though)
I now use my laptop only for the office suite / job hunt ****. And the Note 8h on my face daily for all other internet related stuff now
Laptop no, netbook yes, 10inch cheap android tablet yes, ipad no.
On the move definately great. Relaxing at home, ipad3 still is more relaxing to use. That said, I havent touched the wife's ipad since getting the gn2.

No fot a casual user ;its possible to use note2 as a computer but a casual user cant use becuase its so more difficult
It all depends on where you live and what your basic needs are. My problem is that it doesn't run Java. All official services in Denmark require login with a Java applet. But it will replace my tablet.
Laptop no but tablet? Absolutely. I had the nexus 7 until I received my note 2 then I sold it. My note does everything's nexus 7 can do better, battery life is actually a bit better on the note 2 for me and its more portable. On top of that you have cellular data so it definitely can replace a tablet but not a laptop though.
Why is everyone saying "laptop no"?
The OP stated that they would use it for "surfing the web, listening to music, watching videos reading ebooks/pdf ", why wouldn't the Note be sufficient? I've done more with less capable hardware.
Just wait until there is a good Linux chroot and someone makes an s-pen compatible vnc client, then it will replace everything!

I would still say no, a laptop can you do so much more with. Although you can do a lot with this device you are restricted by many limitations compared to a laptop. However you can get far and do much with this relatively small device. I'm a freelance photographer and i use the Note 10.1 now instead of a laptop, it works pretty smooth and allows me to deliver images to papers and clients on foot and it slips down in my camreabag with ease compared to a bigger heavier laptop.

I already have the Asus Transformer Prime tablet, and with the attached keyboard dock I can have all of the functionality of a laptop when I RDP to my Windows desktop. The Note 2 will provide just about the same ease of use and functionality with the s-pen. I imagine the s-pen will be a very similar I/O interface to a mouse given the wacom sensor in the Note 2. I just hope that the devs find a way to effortlessly use the it to pan, zoom, and scroll within windows.

Yea but he's not going to have a pc. Honestly the few things you can't and might have to do on a pc would be burning a movie or something like that and more mainstream gaming. In android device can definitely replace a pc for most things. The question to whether specific android devices can replace a pc in all practicality and reality. Personally I watch a lot of YouTube and the difference between my nexus 7 and my friends note 2 is quite extreme. You can do ANYTHING on a 4" a android phone you can do on a 10" tablet but a GUARANTEE there are times you'll want to throw your 4" phone into the toilet and flush it if you had to use it for everything.
So is 5.5" enough to replace a tablet IMO? Personally, no. I know it could be done but it isn't very practical. I watch videos/surf the Web on my phone if I HAVE to, not because I really want to. While a 5.5" screen is more enjoyable than something smaller it won't in all practicality replace a 7" tablet or 10".
I do keep my laptop for playing games and the burning stuff but honestly beyond that I haven't touched it, I always grab my nexus 7.
So the question is can android replace a pc for the most part? Yes. Can a note 2 replace a pc? Technically yes, in all practicality IMO no. Good luck with what you decide

Ok, you are correct if we're talking about not even having a desktop. So yes, the main thing you would be missing from android phones are apps that can only run on the x86 ISA. This includes a vast majority of programs (basically anything that runs on Windows, Mac OS X, Linux) e.g. CAD programs, photoshop, mainstream games, etc... Compared to x86, the ARM ISA has not had a lot of apps written for it and not a lot has been ported over either. While a lot of the more basic apps have been ported over (e.g. email, notepad, browser), not a lot of more demanding apps have been written for the less powerful ARM ISA, simply because stuff like mainstream games are currently way too taxing for an ARM based SoC.
However, most of the casual, basic apps like email and web browsers have been ported over or rewritten for ARM. Plus, with Android, you're able to manipulate and transfer files without having to worry about proprietary stuff like iTunes getting in the way. So as long as you don't anticipate needing to use specific x86-only apps in the future, you should be fine.
In response to the screen size comment, I think that the ideal screen size mostly depends on the situation. For example, in social settings, something 50"+ is ideal. For sitting at a desk, something in between 23"-27" is ideal. Bed? 5" - 10". Couch? 7" - 17". Toilet...? 5" - 10". Anything outside the home? It needs to be able to fit into your pocket so < 6". So I think the ideal screen size is very dependent on your habits at home. If you never sit at a desk at home, then yeah, I think you could definitely get by with just a 5.5" screen. For me, I think the Note 2 will be large enough to want to use it in certain places in my home, but not exclusively at home because I use a desk. I also believe that the screen is large enough so that I can only bring the Note 2 with me on travel and not get totally frustrated by using it exclusively. Essentially, I think the size makes it a very flexible device for many situations.
I've got an iPad but still most occasions reach for my phone as its always with me, quick social networking, quick gaming session, browse of the net, all easily doable even on my 4.7" device. I think 5.5" is a sweet spot for most places.
My PC/Laptop only exclusively gets used for Photoshop, Lightroom, downloading, flashing boot.img, and such. Hardly use it that often for web browsing only time if I'm shopping online otherwise my phone and tablet take care of that. Or if doing a long research session.
I spend most my day at work sat in front of a PC makes a nice change to use something else.
But the note is an ideal size for content consumption, for anything creative PC/Laptops are better suited.

My laptop hardly gets any love anymore.
I use my Note for just about everything. On the very few items I still need a PC, I use TeamViewer and connect to my laptop via TeamViewer Desktop Control for Free. I hardly ever actually use the computer itself.

I would say yes, unless you need to burn CD/DVD/Blu-Rays.

[Q] Nexus 7 as Laptop replacement?

Hey guys, I wanted to get your guys' opinions since i havent gotten a chance to get my hands on a nexus 7 yet. I am a Graduate Assisstant at my college and i graduate in december. With my GA position i was given a laptop to use, well I was wondering what you guys think about using a Nexus 7 as a replacement for a laptop when i graduate since i have to return my laptop. I do have a desktop that runs linux, so for any real computing power i can use that, but for laying in bed, browsing the web, email, watchign youtube, hulu, and other streaming sites as well as visiting lots of forums, do you think the nexus 7 is suitable as a daily device for that? thanks

Agreed for those, but no tablet is a replacement for a laptop.

I am a grad student and school teacher. I bought a tab to replace my laptop because I didn't need everything the laptop could do. My wife has a desktop, so I use that for doing any heavy tasks. I use my n7 with a bluetooth keyboard when in grad class and as a notebook for recording nots and ideas when working g with students.
I originally had a 10 inch tab, but that was too big. Love the n7,and I do not feel like a need a laptop.

For what you said you'd use the tablet for I'd say yes but get the 32gb version cause you never know when you'd need the extra space
I bought my n7 to compliment my atom netbook for my university course. One Bluetooth keyboard and an otg cable and I haven't even turned my netbook on in over 3 months. Office apps are good enough for editing and some changes to PowerPoint presentations etc.
Half of the time now I don't even take a bag to Uni, my n7 in my pocket and I am good.
I have 3 computers at home (wife and kids use them) I find most of my browsing, YouTube etc. Is being done on the n7. My comps I use only for mmo gaming and large projects.

Tablet is nice but it will never replace a PC/laptop for me. If I'm home alone, I am still always on my desktop. I'd rather sit at my desk with a sound system to listen to Pandora than being alone on the couch with ear buds. There are still many times I need to use my PC because a page won't display correctly or is difficult to use.
While I love my N7, it's still for casual use. It will never replace a PC for me unless I have no choice.
For sitting on the couch or in bed, a tablet will probably be good enough you.

But of course , I would still keep my EEEPC , since it is still a standard IBM PC , there are still lots of works that require a standard computer to complete . For example , briefing with VGA out , connect some uncommon hardware (e.g. 3G usb modem , printer with no network) .
one last thing i do alot also is use torrents, is that something that can be easily done on the N7. I saw utorrent just released a beta for android, so i assume that this is a task easily done now on the N7. Thanks guys i think i am going to go with the N7 as my go to mobile device. For only $250 you cant really beat it.
On another note, is anyone using the tablet UI, and if so what do you like better by chance?
Nutshell version:
In most situations laptops are orverkill. Web browsing, torrenting, music, gaming can all be done BETTER on the N7. You don't NEED a laptop for this. CREATING a lot of content then you'll NEED a laptop. The N7 can handle SOME of this but when you get into doing a lot of it it's clunky and you'll run into limitations.
TL-DR version:
An N7 is NOT a laptop replacement. If you're looking to replace an entire laptop, just buy a laptop. HOWEVER... if you realize you don't NEED a laptop.. the N7 is perfect.
Here's a little illustration to help:
I personaly have come to realize that I don't NEED a laptop. I have one.. but it never leaves my house. When I go out, I take my N7 instead. My needs on the go are different than my needs at home. I realize what I need (I say "need"... but who really "needs" luxury devices like laptops and tablets though) is a beefy and powerful desktop at home and some periphery computing accessories like a chromebook and a good tablet. If i want to do graphics, music or gaming.. I do it at home on the desktop. If i'm on the go, i'm not trying to do graphic editing or create music... i'm consuming content or gaming.. the Nexus is perfect for this. If i'm trying to create content on the go... it's not going to be heavy duty stuff.. it's most likely going to be document editing or coding.. the chromebook will do nicely.
I hope that illustration helps. Thats a real world use for the N7 as opposed to something unrealistic like trying to do all of your college work (i'm also in school.. the N7 can handle some things like documents, but it's DEFINITELY better to use a full computer/laptop) you're going to run into limitations you'll be forced to work around.
^ well put

Honestly if I had a hard keyboard for my nexus 7, I wouldn't really ever use my laptop. Jellybean is a pretty good operating system getting better everyday, serves as a pretty good windows replacement
It comes down to a decision about content consumption vs. content creation and which & when you do more of. Because of variability in what people do and how much they travel around, I don't think there is a one-size-fits-all answer. The need to use a single PC application that can't be substituted for with a tablet app can easily force the decision.
Three years ago I was down to two computers - a laptop and an android phone. When the laptop finally died, I switched to a deskside, even though I knew I would sorely miss it for one kind of multitasking: watching TV and web surfing simultaneously.
Why? Screen real estate! You simply can not be as productive (say as a programmer) when you need to refer to several things simultaneously (docs, code, deguggers, etc) on a single 15-17" diagonal screen. Multiple monitors are a game-changer when it comes to productivity. (Sure, you can use stacks of windows or multiple virtual desktops on a laptop, but switching back and forth between them is lost time).
Along the same vein, appreciate that Android style multitasking - a single activity on the whole screen - makes cut-n-paste operations or quick referral to info in a 2nd app clumsily slow. A tablet (Android or Apple) isn't productive for work that needs frequent use of that type of activity.
Same goes for using a finger for text entry - pathetically slow. If you must capture notes of any length ("content creation") on the tablet, use a physical keyboard.
Still, I missed surfing from the couch, and a 3-in android phone screen wasn't cutting it. Tried Google TV for a while, but sharing the same display just seems unnatural and is an irritation to a 2nd person watching the same TV screen.
So, now I still don't have a laptop - just the big iron for being productive (read: not in front of the TV!), and an entertainment/reading device that can be used anywhere - couch/bed/crapper.
In a way, that's good as it helps enforce a decent separation between work and play.
At this point, I miss the laptop only for situations that require both a full-up OS and portability. I don't need that for work; but if I did I probably would have all three.
If it came down to a matter of money, and I could only afford one, it would probably be the laptop that got the nod.

[Q] So, what can I do to get more use out of my Nexus 10?

I've had it for a few months now, and most of the time it's usually just sitting either on my computer desk or nightstand. I use it lightly around the house (like if I'm in the Kitchen, I'll look up a recipe on it), and when I'm out of the house, it gets used, but barely.
At home, I have a Desktop I use primarily for everything pretty much.
Currently, I'm thinking about even selling my Nexus 10, and going for a x86 tablet, such as the ASUS VivoTab Smart ($499). The fact that it's x86 means I feel I might be able to get more use out of it just based on the kind of programs I use mainly on my Desktop.
So, is there any suggestions as to what I can really do to get more use out of my Nexus 10?
First thing I did was buy a bluetooth keyboard/case to go with it. Got mine from minisuit. Now I use it basically as a laptop replacement for most things. Most of my writing with textmaker. I guess it all depends though. Maybe go ubuntu touch route (just for something to f around with) or full ubuntu arm desktop. The screen alone makes it worth it to me over other tablets.

I'd love to try out full Ubuntu (the touch preview is pretty much useless except for developers currently), but I don't believe there's any good method currently for getting it on the N10.
The screen is nice on the N10, resolution-wise anyway. Colors aren't "too" great, but they do look fine for the most part.
Yeah ive heard that a lot about the colors. Never really noticed though. Ktoon's kernel has a color tweak that people are pretty happy with. Yeah im not sure about full ubuntu yet. I havent tried the linux installer. I was hoping they would make an installer like they did the n7 :hope:

Bump
I used to use my laptop for everything, but since I bought my Nexus 7 (then later Nexus 10), I've only used it for production-type tasks and occasional PC gaming. Other than that, everything gets done on my tablet, including gaming, web browsing, reading, watching videos, etc.
Tablets are not going to fit into everyone's lifestyle, but for some, the convenience of being able to do these kinds of tasks at any place and at any time are valuable. For example, it's much easier for me to use a tablet while lying on the couch than a laptop.
The only things my pc does that the tablet can't in my daily computing tasks is being a media server and office apps. I don't use any graphic applications in my normal computing though.
I find it great for pokerstars, most web surfing, and basic emailing tasks.
I don't use my pc or laptop that much anymore and couldn't imagine traveling without it.
I'm in the Dominican now for vacation and its been mint. Although it doesn't have support for flash I was able to find a working build and stream my local hockey games

Hmm, perhaps I should just shift my browsing from my Desktop over to my tablet to get some more usage out of it.
I do all my browsing on here now. Between chrome beta and lightning or aosp browser It can handle everythinng

Hows your Tablet after X amount of months?

Hey guys! I'm looking to buy an Nexus 10 in the next few weeks but I'd like to get some reviews or opinions on your guys experience after using it for some time now. I have a nexus 4 and am real into the android eco system and all but I also have an Ipad and am worried about the app selection. Do you guys find it lacking? ANyone else have an ipad to compare experiences? I love android but if all Im gonna be doing is using the chrome app then I might as well stick to the Ipad and not spend the extra money. What do you guys think? I use my Ipad for mostly media consumption, web browsing, flipboard, reading books & time magazine and other tablet magazine/newspapers, movies and music, and some productivity stuff. Help me out guys! Also if you have the 16 gig version, are you finding yourself out of space? I may opt for the 32gig.

After 4 months of using my Nexus 10 it's defiantly one of my favorite devices that I own, my friend was a hard core ipad user but he recently switched to a Nexus 10 and really likes it. As far as app wise, Android has come a long way in regards to tablet optimized app's and virtually all of the major app's are optimized for tablets. For media consumption I love using the Nexus 10 I often find myself watching Netflix on that at night because of the great screen over my TV. It's also great for regular movies, and tv shows you have loaded on and the speakers for music are quite loud for a tablet. Web browsing is great with chrome fast and smooth. I haven't tired flipboard personally so I can't comment on that unfortunately, for magazines and newspapers most seem to read nicely but a couple of them can be oddly formatted. For productivity, I use app's like Photo Editor and Sketchbook Pro for Tablets which all work well in usage experiences. As far as storage goes I have the 32 GB version and I am glad I went for it over the 16 GB because there is not sd-card slot it's better to have the storage capacity for when you need it rather then being frustrated when you run out of storage room.
I've also had it for 4 months. I'm a full time student and I find myself using my tablet every day as opposed to my computer. Honestly I didn't expect it to be as useful as it turned out to be. The only thing I can't use it for is advanced video editing. And the only thing that I prefer doing on my computer rather than Nexus is typing long essays. I don't actually have a tablet keyboard though so I imagine it would be much smoother with a physical keyboard and mouse.
As previously stated, my Nexus 10 is an awesome media device. I have a lot of 3D action games that I enjoy playing. Plus whenever I go a few days without my Nexus, I'm always blown away by how crisp the screen is when I come back. You never permanently get used to the high quality screen.
