Found out that the latest KitKat soak (and the upcoming OTA) breaks the SqlLite hack that allowed tethering.
Fear not, I have found a hack used for the Droid Ultra.
Go here -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2578410
Follow the instructions except, when you click on the link to download the APK,. it's actually name with a .ZIP extension. When you download it to your phone, just rename it with an .apk extension instead and follow the instructions to the letter. Read them carefully and reread them.
I can verify it works.

Hot damm, thanks for the heads up on this. This is the Verizon app "Wireless Hotspot" hack that they've fixed, correct? Good to know there is another hack out there prior to losing the wireless tethering capability when I upgrade to KK. The new exploit/hack allows use of the same Verizon app, yes?

The exploit/hack was the SqlLite where you went and modified the "Entitlement Check" to 0. This no longer works under the new KK OTA update.
Instead, the "hack" uses a modified version of the VzwEntitlementService.apk file. It's not as easy as the SqlLite hack, but it works none-the-less.
Apparently, the Droid Ultra had the same issue and this hack was made for the Droid Ultra, but it works for the RAZR HD as I have applied it.
You must be rooted in order to make this work since you have to use Root Explorer to go into the /system directory and make modifications there.

Similar to installing a cracked .dll file for hacked software (um, not that I do that ever...)
Question for you, regarding the procedure for installing the OTA. I am bootloader unlocked like you are, just wanted to get firsthand knowledge on the topic. Let me know if I have this right:
- Download OTA (whenever it gets here - I'm always the last to receive it)
- Unroot
- Take OTA (pending I haven't deleted any system files I shouldn't have)
- Flash the CWM recovery that is built for our phones on KK.
- Reinstall SuperSU via recovery
- Profit

Yes. That's pretty much it. The official OTA should be coming out in the next week or so.
If you go to this thread that I started (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2749157), it explains what to do when you are ready to take the OTA, although it was done from my perspective. It probably worked for me using 9.30.1 because I was part of the soak test and so my phone was registered for it. Others had issues who weren't part of the soak test and they would get "key not valid" errors when trying to install it. That's why I would probably hold off until the official OTA comes out.
The big part is when it reboots after the initial install and you have to go back into the recovery again and start the 2nd part of the install. I didn't know that and for days, I was at a loss in getting this to work. I was then trying to downgrade to 9.16 so I could then take two more OTAs to upgrade to 9.18 when all along, it was that I didn't know about the new recovery that had to be installed in order to make this. Of course, Motorola/Verizon didn't tell us that when it was time for the soak test.

If your bootloader is NOT unlocked, you can't preserve root from JB to KK. There is no known way of getting root back after upgrading to KK unless you have an unlocked bootloader.
As for unlocking the bootloader, don't ask. Once the exploit was fixed months ago, there has never been a way to do it again without Motorola's help. So, please do not ask me or others on how to unlock it as it's too late for those that applied the OTA months ago that fixed the exploit to unlock the bootloader.
Basically, you have to either wait and see if someone eventually comes up with a way to achieve root on locked bootloaders, or else, stay on JB if you wish to preserve root.
unlocked bootloader
what about people on a kk custom rom? i know ill just wait for the devs to port the kernel and features to the roms but say if there is someone adventurous and wants to try the official rom (incase they are sick of the bugs or something)?

I have working tether on KK based on this... As soon as the official FXZ is out I will finish up and release my ROM inclusive of this
Sent from my DROID RAZR HD using Xparent BlueTapatalk 2
If it helps until another solution is found, PDAnet app works with USB tether, if you're just tethering to a PC. There is an option to share wifi from the PC with PDAnet as well.
Working for me with locked BL and kitkat.
If you're rooted you can load xposed and use the moto tethering module patch; advantage over the apk replacement above is the ease of install/uninstall and the lack of the checking status popup.
Works on 183.46.10.XT926
Rooted Unlocked 4.4.2 with tether running. Thanks Topsnake!
It's been a good couple days, jumped from JB to KK, restored root and unlocked then enabled wifi tether. Incredawsume!

BTW, is the new exploit in the original thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2787763) or somewhere else? I couldn't find it in the original thread as that appears to be the old apk replacement.

As writen by the Lenovo Staff in the lenovo Forum:
1. OTA2 will fix the root exploit of OTA1. It is unacceptable to our enterprise customers deploying a business tool like ThinkPad Tablet to have a known root exploit - so we have no choice but to fix the exploit. My advice to anyone who wants to keep root, is to stay on OTA1. Fixing the root exploit took less than a day - it is not (and never has been) the reason for OTA2 delays. Nobody within Lenovo will have anything more to say about rooting the ThinkPad Tablet, so please don't ask any follow-up questions about this - or at least don't expect any answers. Thank you in advance for understanding this.
2. OTA2 delays are being caused by various issues found during testing. We are trying hard to get OTA2 done right and everyone within Lenovo understands how many important fixes are in it. Bsnf will probably have more to say about this tomorrow - whether OTA2 will release this week, or if there will be another delay while we fix a last-minute issue found during testing. We apologize for the delay.

Hu? Where did you get OTA2? I can't find it on the lenovo servers.
I didn't realize that the OTA2 wasn't out yet. I just hit the auto update and assumed that it was the ota 2 update. I am on build "ThinkPadTablet_A310_02_0037_0075_US". I will try the root exploit and see if it works. Hopefully someone can modify the ota update to maintain root.
According to a post over in the Lenovo forums it is, but those on root will not get the update OTA naturally.

That was released in Nov 2011:

ok, 0086_we is available via ota.
i just downloaded it automatically.
the update.zip is stored in /cache, just in case someone wants to delete it and prevent the update on next restart.
might it be possible to manipulate the update.zip and include su (maybe a silly question, but i'm far away from being a dev or android-expert).

Should be possible. You have at least to edit the update.script in the zipfile and to look for parts like this (from the orignal script):
Code:
ui_print("Removing unneeded files...");
delete("/system/app/LenovoBookmarkWidget-1.0.023.apk",
"/system/app/LenovoConfigFileHandler-1.2.001.apk",
"/system/app/LenovoSetupWizard-1.2.001.apk",

"/system/bin/redsocks", "/system/bin/redsocksctls",
"/system/app/LenovoAppShop_K1_b219.apk",
"/system/app/LenovoBookmarkWidget-1.0.022.apk",
"/system/app/LenovoConfigFileHandler-1.0.007.apk",
"/system/app/LenovoSetupWizard-1.1.001.apk",
"/system/app/dxtg-lnv-u1_3.003.999.apk",
[B]"/system/app/Superuser.apk", "/system/bin/su", "/system/xbin/su",[/B]
"/system/recovery.img");
"Removing unneeded files..." ... no comment...
You may also want to remove the recovery and stay wit CWM. Will look into it when i find some free time. But can't test it myself right now, because I'm playing around with a custom rom and the firmware updates in the update could make things more complicated.
What kind of custom rom do you use? Aosp? Ics?

I'm glad you asked because were already on 4.2.2 why would we downgrade. The moto x got the update and jcase hadn't created the exploit yet which requires you to be on 4.2.2 so they had to down grade. Jcase just updated the exploit and is looking for droid testers his instructions say to downgrade unless your already on 4.2.2 My advie is to not install the update yet if you want root. You will just have to downgrade its more work. If you take the update pull it and put on your PC don't install it. I have the updater frozen so as soon as the update is posted I will attempt to root again on 4.2.2 and install the update hope it works smoothly.

I don't think it matters but that is a ? For jcase.
So in my excitement to flash 4.4, I forgot to take into account losing the root. So I tried to downgrade as per JCase's suggestion, but there's a big problem if you already successfully installed the OTA. It is an updated security signature and software. Because of this, RSD Lite and fastboot return with the error of "Flash failed. Downgraded security version". Does anyone have a workaround or an updated FXZ that will flash over 4.4 to revert back to 4.2.2 so I can try the JCase's backdoor method?

It doesn't unlock the bootloader. Just takes off the write protection so you don't need to reboot your phone into recovery to turn it off. Which allows you to use the actual stock recovery as well.

Just read this on Android Authority and was wondering if it would work. Great to hear this. Again, users got REAL lucky on this one considering this wasn't created specifically for this phone, but for the general population of unpatched 4.4.2 kernels.
Word of warning, if you used my UNIVERSAL script to flash 183 onto your phone, you must either manually flash the TZ partition or use my KEEP DATA script before rooting an unlocking else it will fail.
BTW, I just received an email notification from Motorola stating there is another soak test coming, so definitely root and unlocked your phones NOW and I can't stress that more than enough or else, you can kiss root and unlocking good-bye, especially if this is an 4.4.3 update. Once 4.4.3 comes out, /system is no longer writeable and things will get really ugly.
So, root and then unlock your phones on the 4.4.2 KK OTA before the next one comes out or you will be sorry.
BTW, if you're so worried about voiding your warranty, once you root, you've voided your warranty and there is a root checker built into the device, so they can tell if you've rooted or not, so if you're going to root, you might as well unlock the bootloader.
The warranty concern is nonsense. PLENTY of people sent back unlocked phones and no one ever complained. Yes, the soak emails were known about last night which is why we've been trying like hell to get this message out to everyone to get it done NOW. It's an almost certainty that the TZ partition will be secured again. And root will almost assuredly be patched since it was patched in the linux kernel on june 3rd. Unlocking is the surefire way of keeping root forever, and getting to play with new roms which is awesome. Plus, don't like kitkat? Downgrade with my UNIVERSAL script. (Yes, the one that's causing some problems for people unlocking. LOL). We can not stress this enough...NOW is the time to unlock before it's too late. I can't even begin to describe how lucky you all are.
One question. After I unlock the bootloader and they send out 4.4.3, will it be possible to take the update OTA?

yes but there may be some jumping through hoops like unrooting or sbfing but you will not lose any data and you can just reroot by flashing a superuser.zip . unless moto goes from nice to evil and this ota re locks boot loaders
That's what I'm wondering. Will they relock the bootloader or leave it be since these phones are nearly two years old.

Stop that. They're not going to relock the bootloader. However, screw OTA's. Wait for the FXZ to leak and use my RSD Script Generator to create a KEEP DATA or UNIVERSAL script and flash that with RSD. Flash custom recovery (CWM or TWRP) and flash supersu zip and be done with the whole thing. Forget unrooting and trying to make the OTA work. Too much effort. LMAO

See what you've done? These poor people are now paranoid about bootloader relocking. LOL! They won't relock it. It's physically blowing an eFuse to do the unlock. Relocking would be extremely problematic and cause more problems than they'd solve. And given the likelihood that this was "accidentally" done (cough cough) in the first place, there's an almost 0 chance of relocking.

That's what I'm wondering. Will they relock the bootloader or leave it be since these phones are nearly two years old.

i dont think they will and even if they did we could probably get around it with @SamuriHL universal script we would just have to wait until the sbf/fxz files come out
Which I'm recommending you do anyway.
I never unlocked the bootloader the first go round but I'm sure going to this time.

Good to hear. I want everyone with these phones to do so. This is a great opportunity. No one should be sitting on the fence this time.
Indeed great news. Too bad my XT926 is not by me right now(being used by my father) and I can get my hand on it till september.
My XT926 is bootloader locked and has JB 4.2. build is 9.18.94 I guess. I have my phone rooted and since then using safestrape 3.12 and has stock rom and RageHD ROM on it. I can remember last time trying to install OTA the update process failed even I have used voodoo root keeper to hide the root.
So now my questions:
1. Is the right procedure for me: Remove Safestrape->Install OTA KK->using methods described here for KK for unlocking?
2. What was the reason the OTA update failed? Safestrape?
3. Can I uninstall Safestrape through it's "uninstall" function?
4. After uninstall if I choose OTA update, will it be the current KK which contains this old exploit for bootloader unlocking?
5. If I wait till september to do it myself, if there is another OTA out which patches this exploit again, can I fake a Moto web site and pointing it to the current KK (183), lets say change the host file on XT926. Is this even possible?

yes that is what i posted
Rooted and unlocked using the apk's. Doesn't get any easier than that. Now what is the preferred custom recovery for most of you?

From the description I see that the script will flash a 760MB file, the KK 4.4.2 (KDA20.62-10.1). So I won't be afaid that when I wait for some months even if Moto patched their OTA for this bootloader exploit, the unpatched bootloader is still in (KDA20.62-10.1), which I assume is build 183, so I will still be able to use this exploit, as long as my phone is in JB (4.2) state?

there is no jb 4.2 i think you mean 4.1..2 . but you will not be able to use it on jelly bean you need to update to kitkat root then unlock.
Just got another email from Motorola to sign up for a preview of a new software release. Probably fixes issues that were discovered after the KK upgrade.
CAUTION FOR THOSE WITH LOCKED DEVICES: Considering you just got a new root method, I would steer clear from this if you want to keep root. I have a feeling Towelroot will not work after this since it only works for kernels dated before June 3, 2014. Also, this might break the current tethering hack as well for 4.4.2.
It would be nice if this were a 4.4.3 update, but I don't know at this time. Since I'm unlocked, I'm going to go ahead and sign up for it and see what happens.
Just wanted to get the word out to anyone with locked bootloaders to probably stay away from this unless you don't care about root and the tethering hack.
The bad news about this means the "can I unroot my KitKat phone" won't go away once the OTA comes out.
Pretty obvious that locked users should be careful with the new OTA, same as before, don't rush ahead of yourself and install every OTA that Moto pushes out. Also today is a great day, we've got a root and apparently locked users can unlock their bootloader while being on 183.46.10 update. So I'd rather recommend people to take root and unlock and do whatever the hell they want after that, considering rooting and unlocking is as simple as just installing and running 2 apks.

What? Locked users can unlock the bootloader? How? I didn't see that. Motopocolypse, from what I understand, doesn't work with anything after 9.16 OTA. I got lucky and was able to unlock mine about a year ago (didn't have 9.18 OTA applied from the factory). Still, if people can unlock their bootloaders with the KK, that's great, but again, I have not heard nor seen anything that states this. I only knew about Towelroot and that's it.
As for it being obvious, didn't matter after this past KK upgrade. People did it anyways and we got an unflux of "how do I root this sucker?" over and over again.

I guess I'll be late and you've found that after upgrading to KK and rooting it, you can unlock bootloader with Motopocalypse ^^. Also idk why wouldn't anyone want to unlock BL, considering the phone is on its end of life cycle and won't get anymore android updates (e.g 4.5+) it seems rather wise to unlock and have all the goodies now and in the future.

I see you guys have been using the tether mod I posted for the ultra. no problem, I developed a new mod for 4.4.2 and 4.4.3 so if it does break tether and can make one for the HD.
I used to have an HD so I'll help you guys out.

Awesome. Thanks a bunch for that. I'll definitely want to try it out once I the new OTA comes in. Since I have an unlocked bootloader, I'm not too frightened to do the OTAs, but to know that we can get another tether mod if it does indeed break with the next OTA, that's a relief.
tether seems broken..

Just to confirm, from what I can tell yes the tether hack seems to have broken, I am rooted, unlocked and all that good stuff so I can always flash back, but as a warning I tried to get it working again with no success.
Now I am not ruling out the possibility that I am a dope and screwed up the procedure somewhere, in which case I pray someone can confirm it works and maybe teach a fool to fish .

Uh. the tethering hack still works. Go here -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/dro...d-native-tether-exploit-build-183-46-t2872547
So I got chosen for the 1000 user soak test. Sadly I seem to be unable to take it. I have an unlocked bootloader an am rooted. I tried to remove Xposed Framework and unroot, but with no success.
When I revert back to a clean 4.4.2, I loose the soak test it seems. I have captured the update file though. You guys can dig through it.
I also tried to use the fastboot command "update (filename)" but got some errors. You guys let me know what you think.

Thanks friend, I've been waiting for someone to capture the OTA. Have you attempted to revert to clean 4.4.2 using the sbf yet? I am going to try just that. I've never put together a flahable update .zip but I'll attempt to make a rooted update out of this if I'm successful (unless someone beats me to it).

I need to flash back to a clean 4.4.2 then rename the file update.zip, put it into /sdcard then boot into recovery to take the update. I'll keep everyone posted. I'm still at work for 6-8 more hours.

Thanks, I did the same thing and successfully updated to 4.4.4. I'll root and try to make a TWRP-flashable update to save others the hassle of using the sbf.
But in the meantime, heres the instructions I posted when the 4.4.2 update was captured early if anyone doesn't want to wait: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=52113875
THANKS!
Worked perfectly on mine! Thanks you! I wiped cache before rebooting as well. Phone seems more fluid again. :good:
It worked !!!!!
Just tried twice on my 1st gen MotoX. The update.zip file aborted both times. Guess I'll wait for the RW update - anyone else had any luck ???
UPDATE:
The zip file was corrupted, redownloaded went smoothly - THX
4.4.4 Downgrade?
Hello folks,
This is my first time here on the forums. So I could be asking some pretty noob questions. However about 2 months ago RW sent me a moto x 2013 for my hard efforts as a salesman. And being only 17 years old with a free phone was amazing. So I had 4.4.3 since its been here. And I by mistake updated today to 4.4.4. And now my root is lost and my phone is sloe as can be. And my girlfriend already hates how long it takes to send a text. Any help for a brother to downgrade to 4.4.3 or 4.4.2? Or at least a stable root for 4.4.4 for the time being as I wait for the s6 edge to come out. Thanks in advanced mates!
Is there a way to get the whole image?

You can't unless you buy a code from the "Chinese middleman" if they are even still around.

As far as I'm aware, he isn't around anymore (glad I got to him when I did), so the only means of unlocking the RW Moto X's bootloader is to somehow find one that was never updated to 4.4.4 and use Sunshine
