[Q] What's the USB 3.0 for? - Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey all,
I was just wondering, what's the USB 3.0 for? I mean, the micro SD card isn't fast enough to max out usb 2.0 transfer speeds, and the internal space is capped by the MTP system, right?
Thanks in advanced.

I believe sammy made internal sd cappable of transfering real quick, I tested it with my 32gb dunno wat was it called, but its supposed to be fast, like real fast...so 3.0 is from cellphone to computer, If yours support it, it will be the same as int storage to ext microsd(if it supports fast transfers)

I don`t think the USB 3.0 is useful at all the Class 10 SD Cards has a write speed of 40 MB/s USB 2.0 is 60 MB/s so yes the SD card couldn`t even match the USB 2.0 Spec and internal storage is only 16 GB so even if it`s capable of reaching USB 3.0 speeds which I highly doubt as the USB 3.0 speeds are really close to the SATA 3.0 Specs and currently there is no hard disk on the world matching the SATA 3.0 Specs so I doubt that the internal storage is capable of reaching USB 3.0 so yes the USB 3.0 is not useful probably the only reason we have it is because it charge the phone faster then a USB 2.0 cable because of the additional pins.

I think they went with usb 3.0 with the sole purpose of increasing charging rate, the batteries are starting to increase in size but the rate they charge hasn't really changed much so they went with usb 3.0 to increase the rate. Quickcharge 2.0 is coming soon though so that should help to

usb chargers are NOT usb 3, they don't have the extra back row of pins needed, they only use the standard 4 pin usb which is usb 2. if you use a charging program like galaxy charging current you get no improvement with usb2 over usb3. most s5's were only shipped with usb2 cables anyway. quick charge 2.0 is based on standard usb2.

yeah i dont see any speed difference tbh

Yes if you charge from Laptop but what if you use the charger ? Since i have both usb 3 and usb 2 cables I will test to see if there is a difference in the charging time.

Can you please test and let us know whether usb 3.0 cable charges faster or not

Computer charging

Hi guys, I have a express card slot on my laptop and i am thinking of getting a usb 3.0 slot in it. I was wondering, since the 3.0 slot has the extra pins necessary, will it charge faster (even if not as fast as on the wall?)

The extra pins in 3.0 only allow for higher data rates. The usb port still has a very low current capacity and will take way too long to charge the TF. Note the TF cable has USB3.0 Physicical propertys only, but does not conform to the USB electrical spec

[Q] does the N10 have separate micro USB and charging port?

Does it charge with Micro USB? Or is there separate charger that would allow for simultaneous OTG & charging? If so, is it a samsung proprietary cable?
one port. I don't see why people are all upset with a tablet having one micro-USB port? What I would do to have micro USB on my Asus transformer prime, so damn annoying!
ANd plugging into a PC will charge slowly for most phones, and it depends on tablets, some do some don't. Even then, who leaves their tablet plugged into their PC all day anyways, a big no-no for phones as we all already know, won't charge very quickly...
Are the pogo pins not for charging?

They can charge as well when the tablet is in a dock (if that ever happens...). The pogo pins are not the primary charging method when not in a dock.

ah.. well for one thing, I would say the primary reason is the one I just stated: simultaneous OTG + charging.
There are users out there that do not like the limitation of having no MicroSD card.. The closest thing, without microSD, is OTG. But the problem is that you cannot constantly use it or the battery will empty [also using battery cycles, that could have otherwise been avoided, and saved for when you really need them].
So may I ask where you got this conclusion? I would like to show it to someone.
Would a usb splitter work if you wanted the device to have two ports? Just a thought.

No, you'd be trying to charge the device, while it is giving out power on the same wires, to the USB OTG device.
The only way to fix it is with a kernel patch to disable outgoing power, and accept a charge with OTG.
Can't you buy an charger that fits the pogo pins. Not from google, of course.
Send from my lovely Sensation XL, from a little town in france with a very very slow internet connection.
If I succeed helping you (rare) don't forget to hit the thanks button

maybe..but on the Nexus 7, when you plugged in OTG storage, it would not charge with the pogo pins--at least I'm pretty sure I read this on xda.
so it might be like this on the Nexus 10 too, I dunno.. I guess we'll find out soon.

No, I meant, you asked why people were upset it just had one micro usb port [instead of--I assume--a charging port, and then an additional micro usb], and I said it is [at least for me] because it makes it harder to properly use external storage [that's needed for some people because of the lack of micro sd].
is there an official spec sheet that shows it charges via its only micro usb port?
Hi everyone, I was wondering what type of micro usb port was on the Nexus 10, I cant seem to find any close up photos, I am a noob when it comes to tablet and smartphones, but after looking around for OTG cables and such for my futur N10, I came accros micro usb type A which is bigger and thicker, and micro usb type B which is nice and thin, so I'm kind of confused, which type do I need for N10, can anyone fill me in?
Sorry if I posted this in the wrong thread, but it would probably of been silly to start one for such an easy question . ^^

Yes, via a normal charger adapter. The USB cable is pluggable to the charger.

Sorry, but then buy a tablet that has a MicroSD. The Nexus series doesn't have MicroSD. If you don't like that, there are other options.

Can you use a regular USB charger?

Can you use a regular micro usb charger in place of a 3.0 cable?
Thank you for the help
Yes, no problem. In fact with my S5 there is only a usb 2 cable supplied.

Yup, you sure can.
Just an FYI: The USB3 cable is in fact micro USB as well. It's just the USB3 version of microUSB. The USB3 port on the phone is backward compatible, so a USB2 cable will work just fine in there. :good:
Yep it will work

So which will charge quicker the stock charger or my nexus 7 charger?
I think they are both 2 amp chargers. What is the advantage of the extra plug on the charger?

It's USB 3.0. You'll get faster data transfer speeds when plugged into a USB 3.0 port on a computer.

faster data transfer rate.
OK thanks.
So the charging rate is the same depending on the "block" amps?
I think the USB 3.0 charges faster even if it's still the same 2A charger

It would seem so, yes. In re: max charging amps, it seems that the S5, much like the Note 3, will charge only at 1200mA while the screen is on and 1800mA otherwise. See discussion here: http://forums.androidcentral.com/sa...48184-galaxy-note-3-max-charging-current.html
To the OP, thanks for starting the thread... I hadn't even realized that the new Micro USB 3.0 connector actually was backwards compatible with the older MicroUSB 2.0 for charging!
Great link thanks!
Yep Confirmed!

Is there a way to lock the phone into USB 3.0

My phone will not stay in usb 3.0 mode. Is there a way to force it to stay in usb 3.0 mode? This makes a big difference in charging speed on my laptop. Almost 4 x the charging current is supplied in usb 3.0 mode.

4x the charging current? lol no. Try 2x at peak.
the problem is probably your laptop. why isn't it supplying the additional amperage for usb 2.0?

Save your lol. It depends on the computer. In USB 2.0, my computer is supplying 96 ma. In USB 3.0, the charging current 384 ma, which is 4x as much, as I stated previously.

I give up, why? Maybe it was designed that way. If I knew, I wouldn't be asking.

go to a laptop forum? the phone and the cable speed and phone have nothing to do with stock charging. usb 2.0 and usb 3.0 can both charge at "384ma" like you stated. your laptop just refuses to do so.

Charging at 384ma would take about 4 days to charge your phone. Check your currents and try again.

Support for QC 3.0 and USB 3.0 data transfer

Hi guys,
I've bought QC 3.0 charger and noticed that it charges the phone faster only by 20-25 min in comparison to Sony stock charger, so here the question arises, does XC support QC 3.0 charging?
I've also bought USB 3.0 to usb type-c cable and noticed that it still works in USB 2.0 data transfer speed, so our phone is also not capable of SuperSpeed data transfer?
Yes the x compact only supports USB 2.0.

Sony Xperia X Compact is USB 2.0 only. USB-C is physical definition of jack, USB 3.0 is signalling standard.
Stock charger that comes with European version of XC is already QC 3.0
Yeah as ondrejvaroscak writes one is signalling the other is the connector, as you can imagine 24 usb-c connector can offer alot more so it's not ad simple as that, anyway usb-c cables does not have to support usb 3 signalling no but it should be possible with the correct cable or if you have usb-c on your computer ofc both should be able to operate at 10Gb/s full duplex.
Full-featured USB-C cables that support USB 3.1 Gen 2 can handle up to 10 Gbit/s data rate at full duplex. They are marked with a SuperSpeed+ (SuperSpeed 10 Gbit/s) logo. There are also cables which support only USB 2.0 with up to 480 Mbit/s data rate. There are USB-IF certification programs available for USB-C products and end users are recommended to use USB-IF certified cables.[13]

The cable that comes with the phone is usb 2. I don't know anyone who tried a 3.1 converter cable but I do not see why it should not work.
Usb-c cables also contain a chip.
Electronic ID chip provides information about product/vendor, cable connectors, USB signalling protocol (2.0, Gen1, Gen 2), passive/active construction, use of VCONN power, supported VBUS current, latency, RX/TX directionality, SOP controller mode, and hardware/firmware version

as alot of bad stuff could happen with a simple wire conversation to 24 pin fully reversible connector that can act as both host/slave, and deliver 5amp and analog audio. Usb-c has a long range of future proof modes/specifications. So while usb 3.1 signalling is the current fastest data standard I do not think the old usb connector is the future when you compare it with the possibilities and current widespread of usb-c.
