So I have a 16gb Nexus 10. Obviously not enough space for many movies and such after the OS and apps.
I also have a 16GB S4 with a 64gb microSD card - as the SD is completely empty it's the perfect place to store my media. However, I'd prefer to watch on the N10's big beautiful screen. Is there any way to do media sharing over my S4's wifi hotspot? I'm taking about on planes, in cars, etc. Out of range of my usual wifi goodness.
Thanks for any suggestions!
I just got a used HP slate 2 Tablet. It is running Windows 7 Pro.
I applied the Windows Essential updates and installed Office 2007 and Webroot Secure Anywhere
It has a full sized SD card slot and the 64GB SDXC Card FAT32 I inserted in the slot was recognized
I was testing the videos with VLC
some videos would not play and VLC would just exit within 3 seconds
I tried copying the video from SDXC to the Slate2's SSD and same resutl: VLC would just exit within 3 second
I assumed maybe the video did not copy over properly from my Desktop so I deleted the first few videos
These are 480p movies (not HD) between 400-800MB each
Then I after this happened to about 15% of my videos I shut down the Tablet and ejected the SDXC card
When I put same SDXC card in my cheapo (but reliable!) Acer laptop the ** same** videos worked!
CHKDSK is clean... so I will NOT reformat SDXC card
The tablet has not crashed but as it is only a dual core Atom it is a bit slow
I love to connect it to an external monitor so it looks like a real PC
It runs Gimp for Windows reasonably but I will not even bother with trying Photoshop. It will simply choke
A few other issues I can put on a separate post but his one has me stumped...
Anybody ever see this before?
TIA Dave
So I just ordered my shield, remote, and micro sd. I'm really curious as to if I made a good combination of hardware. I picked up the 16gb version, nvidia remote, and the new fastest sandisk Mico sd. Here's my questions.
-I got the brand new sandisk uhs-ii u3 micro sd, I know the bus speed for micro SD on the shield is only rated uhs-1. Can I format it as adoptable storage using the USB 3.0 adapter so I can get the high speed the card is rated for or will I have to use the micro SD slot for adoptable storage and have my card speed throttled to the slower r/w bus speed. If this is the case should I have opted for a uhs-1 card for half the price
-I also have a USB 3.0 4TB external hard drive full of movies that I currently plug into my LG TV. It is formatted NTFS, will I be able to plug it into my shield and use it as my new media player since the one on my TV is kinda clunky. Can I read and write to NTFS on my shield?
- I also have an Samsung 840pro 250GB SSD in a USB 3.0 enclosure which is formatted exfat. Could this drive be used as adoptable storage via USB 3.0? Pretty much the same as question 1. Can adoptable storage be configured threw USB instead of micro SD, if this is the case do I really need the Micro SD card?
- Will a USB 3.0 hub work on the shield so I can plug in a dongle for a wireless keyboard, my 4TB drive, my SSD, and Micro SD in 3.0 adapter?
- Are the gaming controllers and remote Bluetooth or do they also require a USB receiver.
- Will rooting and installation of custom recovery and rom enable some of the features above that can't be achieved stock?
My needs for the device will be for gaming and playing my local video files and some kodi, so I would like enough storage to install many games. All of my large video files will be stored on my 4TB external. I was hoping to have all my games installed on device threw adoptable storage but would like to get the high speed from my SD card to run games
All answers and suggestions welcomed.
Should I have just opted for the 500GB pro shield?
Here's what I ordered
-also can I use a Xbox or Dualshock 4 controller instead of the included Nvidia one?

Can anyone help with some of these questions? I canceled the 16gb version and opted for the pro. I also canceled the sandisk micro sd. Can I use my Samsung ssd in usb 3.0 enclosure as adoptable storage? Would I benefit any from it as far as load times on games or should I just install to internal 500gb drive? What are the advantages of a custom rom over rooted stock rom. With stock rooted rom can I install all the same apps from Google play or will I have more options with a custom rom? Also I see custom roms of full android 6.0 without nvidia skin overlay. Are there any real benefits this and will I lose any functionality? Any help is appreciated, responses please! I get my shield Tuesday.
Look through the forum and most of your questions will be answered, also, should have stuck with the 16gb

Yeah ended up swapping for 16gb again and gonna use my Samsung ssd adopted. Found the answers to most questions just trying to decide rather to flash full android m or just root factory firmware.
Why not the 500gb with adoptable though. Isn't it a hybrid drive or just a regular 5400rpm hdd

I think the drive is a Hybrid. Pretty good chance that NVIDIA just used a USB 3.0 to SATA chip to service that 500gb drive. So I see no reason why you couldn't have just done it yourself.
How do you know the device did not come with the remote already? I purchased the 16gb and decided I did not want the remote so I didn't buy it, yet surprisingly it was in the retail box anyway.
As far as I know it's just the shield and the controller in the box according to the Amazon description and pictures. They do sell a bundle that has the remote included but I'm pretty confident mine has no remote. You cannot add, change, or remove storage internally on the shield nvidia made sure of that.
Weather to Pro or not to Pro, you can find some more opinions here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/shield-tv/help/buying-16gb-128gb-sdcard-500gb-t3399659
It all comes down to what you want to use the Shield for. If your installed games are not going to exceed those 16GB of flash (which of course will be less) I see no reason to get the Pro. Another valid point is the price difference: for the 100€ difference, I could get a 2-4 TB HDD.
On another note, I think you can find more answers around here: https://forums.geforce.com/default/board/159/shield-android-tv/
Yeah I was talking about getting a bigger usb 3.0 drive and using one of the included usb 3.0 ports. That's actually why they are there.

Gotcha I plan on it, I have a 256gb ssd in enclosure I want to use as adopted storage and a 4tb wd external for media storage
Personally speaking, for my family anyway I just add drives to the home server, or retire them for bigger ones. Building a Windows home server 5 years ago was the best thing I ever did for media consumption. Sadly I only have 3 SATA ports so I am limited to the amount of drives I can add

One thing I forgot to mention: adding USB devices through a USB port will limit the speed and latency at which they are accessed.
OK how would you guys setup this is what I now have ordered and has already shipped so no going back. Idc if I use adoptable storage or not unless it benefits me. My usage will be downloading large torrent files and copying them to 4tb drive using shield as player, lots of large file gaming, kodi, Internet browsing and that's about it. Maybe hangouts
What I ordered:
Shield pro 500gb
Remote
Controllers
Bluetooth keyboard
Whatever I already have:
Samsung 256gb ssd
4tb wd my book
500gb hdd out of ps4
I wouldn't worry about adaptable storage. keep your external drives mounted as removable storage and have your apps and games all installed on your internal drive, keep the external drives just for media. I can't see you filling up 500gb with android apps and games any time soon.

Edit: I think I've got it figured out just gonna root stock rom and sideload whatever I can't get directly through playstore.
Anyway to copy existing downloaded roms that are on adoptive storage, and save them on removable storage or a pc?
Also, can you confirm my understanding of the storage situation. If I have an adoptive storage device with roms and games on it, it CANNOT be removed and installed on to another nvidia shield tv console and used as adoptive storage because it is reformatted during the process and will lose all the data, correct? However, can that adoptive storage device be removed and used as removable storage on a new nvidia console, without losing any roms or games?
Finally, if I have a new 16gb console, and a 128gb flash drive, and plan on playing roms on my console, which I have not downloaded yet. Should I download them first on the pc to a flash drive and then use that as removable storage on the nvidia shield tv? Will removable storage affect performance at all of the console? It won't run any applications from the removable storage, correct? It will only copy it and install it onto the adoptive storage device?

I have a 16gb shield tv , just yesterday I set up the roms & emulators. I used the retroarch app, I installed the following cores (emulators) : sega, snes, nes, n64. As for the storage I'm using a 64gb usb drive, I set it up as removable. I downloaded probably 200 plus roms yesterday, mainly nes :96. Retroarch cores run the games great, some of the cores are better than the other so you just need to choose which works best. Retroarch is fairly simple and straight forward on how to use it and load roms. Downloaded the roms to the usb and I have no issues with them.
I'm curious on how well the shield tv can run Wii , game cube games and psp. I doubt I'll use it but it could be nice to have. My main gaming device is the ps4 pro currently but I hardly use it. Thought about building a htpc but the shield tv was only $120 with game pad and remote.
Hey guys, just putting this out there.
Valve said that you can install any OS you want on this including windows which is better for game support. Proton is great and all but doesnt have 100% coverage.
So what this means is it probably has an accessible BIOS (maybe even cpu undervolting possible) and should let you boot from sd card. This would be great for keeping steam os on the main storage just to see how it goes and for emulators. And then any game that doesnt run properly under proton you can quickly plug in an sd card with bootable windows and play those games there.
What do you guys think if this is possible would you do it? or what other os would you install?
As seen on many SBCs (i.e. RPi, odroid...), sd-card booting is rather slow.
You Do not want that for a Windows-Installation.
My guess is that they wanted to make thing as cheap as possible. A Windows 10 license adds somewhat $50-$100 to the pricetag. Plus they would have to certify the steamdeck for Windows.... Also adds costs, time and maybe IT is not possible at all.
I'd rather go with swapping PCIe-SSDs. Although that might void the warranty.
I agree, I think sd card booting will be slow. But, it's not impossible. Think, booting Ubuntu with a CD. It's slow to boot but once booted mostly everything is in memory and pretty quick.
Ssd... usb... same ole...
My ole elite book 820 1st version, is a corporate laptop, more open than oems, I5 is rapid, 256 pcie used for (broken)wan, wiped giving me a 250 c drive, sata filled with 250gig of fruity midi and softsynths, when hooked up to my studio, best sounds where i live lol, no lag, latency pretty much zero, using win 7 x64 ultimate
Same speeds, usb3 speed, that's how I see it, or usb 2 most likely for most...
That's your actual hardware speed...
chip performance re: running an os, my ssd is faster than the old ones with moving part's... ssd loses files, the old ones we could find easier... with rstudio etc..
Think about it... your ssd is using usb (most likely 3) to transfer through the usb bus...
And if memory serves me correctly, ssd's can only handle on average 200,000,000 read write's, now what does all this mountin partitions do?
Wear the heck out of those rw
ssd all the way.... the frequencies are the key to speed
i wish they would have put a usb A port on the device and that they would have planned for easier replacement of SSD.
