Worse and worse modems? - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys,
I was wondering if you encounter the same problems like I do.
Long story short(er):
I own a I9505, with an LTE contract. Over time, and especially once moving to KK, the stability of LTE connection got worse and worse. And there are two problems: instead LTE I have EDGE or worse connection most of the time (the area where I work should have very good network coverage) AND even if appears as connected, internet is not working.
I have tried several (the most important ROMs), the problem is the same. I have tried with the recommended modems (at the moment of install). Finally, I have even switched back to the original ROM for my country. I can say that this was the worse experience of all, basically could not connect to LTE.
So, anyone encountered the same issues?

I feel the same.
I recently flashed the NZ stock firmware via Odin and the NC6 modem that comes with it is terrible!!
I now regularly lose signal and data.

As a mention, this is due to the fact that before the current custom ROM I have installed the official firmware for my country.

The normal is that u flash the ROM at the country of ur phone. No of ur country. You have remains of older firmwares there. Is normal that ur phone will be crazy.
1. Make a backup of ur Internal Memory
2. Make a factory reset (Settings > Accounts > Back Up and Reset > Factory Data Reset > Reset Device > Delete All/Erase Everything.)
3. Conect it to Kies 3
4. Kies 3 will give u the info you need for know ur correct CSC. This will be btw parenthesis close CSC.
5. Knowing ur CSC, take a look for this firmware in Sammobile.com
6. Download and flash it with ODIN (Dont flash a "Black EDITION" if ur phone isnt it)
7. Dial *#1234# again and take a look if u have the same what Sammobile was telling you. If not, flash again the firmware. (Example in pic attached)

Thanks!
Will try that once I get home. As I knew that Black and normal edition only differ on the look... the official one that I flashed was indeed the Black.
All you say makes perfectly sense...

It worked. Up to a point.
I have installed the official firmware and it looked like it was supposed to.
But, as I installed the custom ROM, both CP and CSC file have been modified/changed. So incompatibility still there.
More findings:
if I go in the service menu with *#2263#, if I chose 3G, there is no connection to the network (strange, as I am in the middle of the city, bu tnot unusual). but if I connect to LTE, i cannot make calls anymore. If I choose the mix 3G/LTE, once the LTE signal is lost, it gets back very slow, even if I am back in a zone where there definitely is signal. Basically, if I am on the stairs ro underground parking, lte is lost, 2g is on, and I don't get back lte once I am in the office (or on the street). i MIGHT get it when I change cells....but not a rule.

i9505 can't connect to 3g - mobile data issue

Hi,
I've read dozen of similar threads but no solution so far.
My phone can't connect to 3G at all. The moment I switch to only WCDMA phone drops network completely.
Everything else works without a problem. I've tried other sim cards (same and other network) no difference.
Baseband and IMEI are OK.
I've tried flashing modems, stock firmwares and it's always the same.
Current state:
AP: I9505XXUFNB9
CP: I9505XXUFNB9
CSC: I9505OXXUFNB2
Please help, I'm running out of ideas.

6. Download and flash it with ODIN (Dont flash a "Black EDITION" if ur phone isnt it)
7. If this not work, you can get it to repair :highfive:

Did already this before posting. I've read pretty much all threads with similar problems. Thanks anyway.
Any more ideas?
Maybe flash box can help it? At this point I'm really frustrated for not being able to fix this. Had several androids before (s and s2 also) and always managed to repair them. First time for everything For sure I'll take it to repair shop on Monday.

Same problem here. I have a S4 i9505 free of carriers. No 3G signal, only EDGE (2G).
I updated modem, nothing happened, Then updated firmware to the last one, and nothing. The problem is still there.
What can I do?
Last firmware installed: I9505XXUGNI2
When did you start experiencing this? Did you update your firmware and suddenly this happened? I too have the same problem. It started when I did sim unlock. I'm not able to fix it up to now.

In my case it was damaged EFS partition. The only way to repair it was using Box. So I would suggest the same to you. At least you'll save a lot of nerves

HI, thanks for your answer.
What is Box? How do I repair EFS partition?
In my case (actually, my friend's phone), it connects to EDGE and it can call to any destiny. Sometimes, loses signal, but with the new firmware, it appears that works better. But no 3G/H+ signal.
Maybe she can go to the service (SAT) ... and they would repair the EFS??
Thanks for your help.
PS: Sorry for my english. I speak Spanish.
We have the same problem. I already brought my S4 to the official samsung service center. Only thing they did was flash an updated ROM from my carrier. It didn't solve the problem as expected because I've done the same already before taking the phone to them. I also already flashed different modems with no luck. This is getting really frustrating. I wish you luck in your search for a solution. Subscribing to this thread.

Box is device built based on reverse engineering of mobile phones allowing user to perform more advanced service operation (for example EFS repair) on handhelds/cells. It usually comes with special set of cables for specified vendor. Google for example 'z3x box' for an idea. It's cheaper for you to bring the phone to some service shop which has box for Samsung phones. They can settle this in a matter of minutes.
Sorry for the late answer, been very busy lately.
I was digging for like a week or so, because i have the same problem. ( i have 2g / gsm signal, but when i switch to wcdma (or 3g) only, i was getting no signal at all. (the circle with the line in it). My imei is not broken/missing, and from all the forums i've been digging i came to conclussion that there are several possible solutions as i think, but im not too deep into that matter, so im just sharing my thoughts, dont try these if you dont know what are you doing, i say again, im not completely sure if any of those gonna actually work.
1st - EFS Proffesional (along with Qualcomm NV Tools) - which can be found here, in xda. (The program itself has a ****load of options, and i dont have the knowledge to operate with it). Qualcomm NV Tools is a part of EFS Pro.
2nd - the secret code menu - Service Mode ( *#197328640# ) - I wasnt able to enter it at first, so downloaded the Shortcut Master (lite) (free in Play Store) and found it there, launched it with option 0 (launches a code with root priv) and i entered the service mode.) i've explored it, there are a lot of settings there, like backup, restore, rebuild, changing bands and so on and on and on, and somewhere inside it, there MIGHT be a solution inside those. I'd like to hear something more about those options from someone who actually understands them.
Other option is JIFF BOX, which i dont know how actually found, it seems that program requires qualcomm usb drivers for PC, and i think this is something like virtual box or w/e it is, i couldnt run it, didnt have time atm, but this program is given to wake up even completely dead sgs4 somehow, so why not bringing back the 3g?
And the last thing ive found - SRS - (found it in sammobile's forums. Some kind of imei/efs/baseband/etc restorer, reflasher or w/e it is. But this is paid program with free trial for unlocking the screen pattern. )
At last, you/me, can always go for a service with box for samsung phones and pay for reflash/repair. Is this the only solution?
Forgot to tell - im using i9505. simfree, no brands etc....
Can't edit previous post. This is the actual service mode code, don't know what are the prefixes and suffixes, I'm running it with root and shortcut master lite. It seems playing with the settings can help, but we need ppl who can really understand these settings. If you need / want, ill make more screenshots.
Sent from my GT-I9505 using XDA Free mobile app
I was also able to read IMEI and have used EFS Professional and NV Qualcomm tools but without success. EFS partition was damaged anyway. So yes box is the only solution in a majority of cases.

Can you explain a bit more what have you tryed with EFS Pro and NV Qualcomm tools?
To others: What about that secret menu? Can something be done by the options inside?

Hi,
The first thing would be to check your CSC and modem firmware. Use Phone INFO ★Samsung★ app to get all major info about the phone. It is important to know when you are going to flash another stock firmware.
I had issues last week with data and it was caused by bad CSC/modem. Flashed everything back to stock with official firmwares from SamMobile and it fixed my issues. After that, I was able to flash my custom ROM and everything is smooth sailing since then.
Let me know if you require more help.

Thanks for help bro. I took a screen shot of my info. I'm not sure why it shows bmc when I downloaded the rwc files. And is the product code correct?, also I never seen the code for csc modem before. Is it not suppose to match baseband, pda, bootloader
Everything is good, you're almost there.
You have the right firmware but now you need to fix your CSC. The stock ROM is multi CSC so Rogers (RWC) is already installed but it chooses Bell (BMC) by default. What you can try :
- Power off your phone
- Remove SIM card and power on (your phone will start and say : no sim card)
- Power off and wait a moment
- Insert your Rogers SIM card and power on your phone in Recovery Mode (Volume Up, Home and Power on boot). If you have:
#manual mode#
--appling multi-csc...
applied the csc code : RWC
successfully applied multi-csc
That means that your CSC has been changed to Rogers. Problem should be fixed.
If not, the app you downloaded contains a CSC Changer but it will wipe your data. Make sure to have backups beforehand.
Let me know if you need anything else.

Thanks for all the help man, did the sim thing and it just loaded me into twrp and i didnt see an option so I changed it via the app. Same thing still got the 4G and bell bloat. But csc now says bmc/rwc
Ok. Try this now :
You must dial the following key sequence to bring up a regional carrier menu: *#272*[IMEI]# (that is *#272* (your IMEI number) #) - You'll find your IMEI in the Phone Info app.
When the menu comes up, select the regional code for Rogers RWC. The phone will now go through a reset/boot sequence and come this time, it should read the APN settings from your SIM card and viola, you now have LTE. If you do not see LTE but 3G, you will need to ensure your APN settings are correct and then go into the Network Mode and ensure you have LTE/WCDMA/GSM (auto mode) selected.
Let me know how it goes.

When you flashed back to stock ROM, did you do a full wipe before?
It is really important that you do a full wipe so that it doesn't leave any traces of your old installs.
Try to flash via Odin (while your phone is on Download Mode). Check the AP and the CSC box and input the stock file from SamMobile.
Let me know if it fixes it.

[Q] S4 Problem with network WCDMA (3g)

Hi all, I have a problem with 3g.
I bought s4 i9505 and it was on 4.2, I had problem with slow internet, so I called operator and they told me to turn on WCDMA only in settings..
When i turn WCDMA only on, it loose my network (emergency calls only), and i have no network at all.. when i put wcdma/gsm automaticly it has normal network..
So i thought its problem in firmware, so today i fleshed 4.4.2 with odin.
Now i have same problem, no network with wcdma only..
I serached internet and i tried several programs for 3g, but nothing worked.. any solution ? thx

Might be a corrupted EFS folder.
I have had the same problem for 3 weeks now. I've tried searching for a solution here and in other online sites to no avail. I personally tried flashing a new stock rom, flashed some odd number of modems, tried factory resetting etc. Nothing worked. I'm afraid it might be due to corrupted EFS folder which I still don't know how to repair.

[Q] stock 4.4.2. No service, data works fine

Dear all,
You are my last resort. I've been trying to find out how to fix the problem, but no success...
My Note3, 9005 (bought new, without contract), has never been rooted or modified in any way. Current version is 4.4.2. IMEI is fine. Well, I am a regular user, who keeps updating the phone, when there's an update from samsung OTA.
I've been using the phone for 1.5 year, everything was fine. I recently switched the operators (Belgium) maintaining the same phone number. And there the problems started.
Very often I get "no service" message, although data connection works fine. I tried automatic and manual selection of the network, but the problem remains. When I select automatic network, I get the message "registerred on network", but "no service" sign remains and get no call connection (data connection works fine). When I select the network manually, I get a brief message "registerred on network", but still no service and then "the network is unavailable"/
I contacted the operator, they claim that my account is fine, they see no problems on their systems. The interesting thing is, that other operators SIMs work fine with my Note. Apparently, it is only my current SIM which fails to work. I have two different phone numbers SIMs from this operator and they both have a frequent "no service" in my Note. I have also requested a new SIM, which again did not work... The same SIM works fine in Sony Xperia. I have also tried that same SIM in galaxy s3 (LTE). And there was again a problem with connection, i.e. no service, but data functions fine. I have also tried different modes (3G, 4G), the problems remain. It looks like it is the problem with samsung devices.
This is the time when I really need the phone for my work...I keep failing my clients because they cannot get hold of me. And changing the phone number and operator would be very inconvenient at this time.
Is there anything I could do to fix it?

try to flash stock firmware of your country via odin. i hope its work.
Nico, many thanks!
I understand my phone was brought from the UK. But currently I am in Belgium. Could you please tell me, what country firmware should I use, what specific firmware I have to flash? (I would appreciate if someone could refer me to a download link...I am not very good with these types of things, I am afraid to mess things even further...)
rooted, reinstalled stock 4.4.2. Now when making a call, the network dissapears and connection dissapears and becomes "no service", therefore the problem remains. data connection works fine.
guys, please advice, what can i do to fix it? should i go for other ROMs (not stock), would that help?
i've read about ariza patch, but did not understand whether it is available for note 3 4.4.2.

Joku, thank you very much for your reply!
But I think I did exactly what you have recommended in the first attempt - flashed the stock version. Please see the pics of kies and suggested sammobile firmware attached. ...But "no service" problem remains. Althoug, I must say, it goes away from time to time (better than it was without reinstall). Maybe I should go for other country firmware (for example Belgium, where I am currently based and where the problems persist)???
After reinstall my firmware is:
AP: N9005XXUGNG1
CP: N9005XXUGNG1

All seems ok. Make a thing:
1. Backup your data and factory reset your phone (Pic attached)
2. Tell me if you have service then.
This is obviously a carrier issue as you stated yourself other carriers work fine. You can waste your time throwing things at the problem, but I'm highly confident it's not going to be fixed by anything you do.
Sent from my leanKernel 3.13 powered stock 4.4.2 (NF9) SM-N900T
It does sound like a provider problem...
Try a factory reset first, just to be sure. Best do it through recovery, so you can wipe the cache as well.
Does the no service happen everywhere? Or just in specific places?
Sent from my SM-N9005 using Tapatalk 2
Thank you all for your replies.
The problem is that the same 'no service' SIM works fine in another phone (sony xperia), the provider will claim that it is note3 fault.
I did factory reset after I reinstalled the stock version.
It looks like ' no service' appears when the phone changes the cell/network towers when travelling from one location to another. .. But I can't say that it is always the case. I just don't find any logical reason to fully explain that.
The weirdest thing is that data connection works fine always.

It is probably related to the way your provider does the 2G/3G/4G band allocation and switching - what provider is that?
You can also try to set the data to "3G only" vs "LTE/3G/auto" and see if is any difference.
The provider is Base (via virtual network provider).
I've tried everything, including changing to 4g, 3g, etc. Nothing helped : (
Should I try flashing different modems? The question is, which versions should I go for. ..?
updated to lollipop. no changes
I still haven't solved this issue. I just updated to lollipop (via CrashRom), the problem with "no service" remains.
Is there anyone with similar problems, who was able to find an answer? What else could I try? Should I try flashing different modems? Could anyone help me choosing which modems should I try?
pleeeease.... : )
anyone please?
can I try flashing different (older) modems? would that mess up my curent rom?

Check this post for downgrading from Lollipop to KitKat.
Regarding to "No service" problem, go to the ServiceMode MAIN MENU and try NV REBUILD.
To open the ServiceMode MAIN MENU:
- If you have root, install Phone INFO ★Samsung★ app > Menu > 'Secret Codes' > *#27663368378# > 'Launch 0'.
- If you don't have root, open the dialer > *#0011# > Menu - Back > Menu - Key Input > Q0 > wait... until it appears

firstly, many thanks for your advice to rebuild nv.
i did as you explained, but... it did not help.
i went through all of the options available, flashed stock firmware, flashed various roms. nothing helps. what's interesting that i have call availability (service) for some time, but when i move to different area, the service dissapears and i have to turn on/off airplane mode. and this happens with specifically one provider (mobile vikings/base - belgium). if i insert the other provider sim, note 3 works fine.
my imei is ok.
pleeease help me to fix this problem. what else can i do? is theo nly option left to change provider?

From your first post, I have no idea about your problem.
You wrote:

[2] - I have two different phone numbers SIMs from this operator and they both have a frequent "no service" in my Note. I have also requested a new SIM, which again did not work...
[3] - The same SIM works fine in Sony Xperia.
[4] - I have also tried that same SIM in galaxy s3 (LTE). And there was again a problem with connection, i.e. no service, but data functions fine
(1) + (4) ==> your Note should be OK.
(2) + (3) ==> the SIM is OK.
Currently I have no idea.
Your best bet is flashing back to original stock firmware.
And try to check your SIM card in your Note 3 by follow these steps:
In the ServiceMode MAIN MENU, select DEBUG SCREEN > SIM INFORMATION, you will see 3 options. Select every option, capture screenshots and post it here more more checking.

The 2nd and 3rd screens are the sme.
is there a way to see the reason why the network is being disconnected via service menu?
...because when i turn airplane on/off, the network comes back. but when i dial the number it disappears right away with the message "network not available".

Yes there is. Here is how:
- If you have root, install Phone INFO ★Samsung★ app > Menu > 'Secret Codes' > *#197328640# > 'Launch 0' > BASIC INFORMATION (capture screenshot #1) > Menu - Back > NAS INFORMATION > MM INFORMATION (capture screenshot #2) > Menu - Back > MM REJECT CAUSE (capture screenshot #3).

Your digging around has misled you. The GT-I9505 has 2100MHz support for 3g, as noted here, here, and here. It also has 2100MHz support for LTE. So something else is causing your issue. Are you certain your phone isn't in fact getting an LTE signal instead of 3G?
monteiro-ribas said:

Well... sadly after digging around i found out that the phone doesn't support 2100 frequency.
It's the official firmware for this country, was bought in this country but only gets 2g and 4g

Based upon the information you've provided, you're on the Baltic Black Edition firmware (CSC SEB). The firmware here though doesn't appear to be the problem. The problem is that you need to clear up some confusion here. You're saying you can't get LTE, are using unbranded firmware, yet your phone is locked to a carrier.
In an attempt to clear up things, please provide us with the missing information below, and confirm any already provided information is correct.
1. Model Number
Answer: GT-I9505, based upon the title of the thread.
2. Android Version, found by going to Settings > More > About device.
Answer: 4.4.2, based upon the firmware information.
3. Firmware Version (AP, CP, CSC), found by dialing *#1234# in the dialer or by installing and running Phone Info from the Play Store.
Answer: AP and CP I9505XXUGNJ8, CSC I9505YXXGNK1, which using the sammobile.com firmware checker links to the Baltic Black Edition firmware.
4. Service Provider
5. Country
6. Is the phone rooted? (Yes/No)
7. Is a custom ROM installed? (Yes/No, and the name of the ROM)
Answer: No, if you're able to pull up the firmware version via *#1234#.
You seem extremely knowledgable on this subject, would you mind if i picked your brain ???? Ive been having a similar problem:

NOS (formerly PT Multimedia, ZON Multimedia and ZON Optimus). You will have to flash the latest firmware for your locked device. Download, unzip and flash this firmware via ODIN: HERE.
thanks but as i said before, i've tried many stock firmware, including that... that was te first one because i also thought that was something related to simlock
i will send the phone to warranty, or try at least
@Joku1981: If I didn't have to work today I would have told him the same thing.
@monteiro-ribas: If you intend on having the phone swapped out, you might want to flash the correct firmware that Joku1981 provided the link to before sending the phone in. I do hope you let us know if you get your issue resolved and whether it actually was the phone or, alternatively, the service.

My original post in modems:
Ok guys, my kingdom for a solution, please !!!
Here's the deal, I have a samsung galaxy S4 GT-I9505 bought in hong kong, worked flawlessly for over a year on Telcel Mexico network, took a trip overseas to France bought a sim put it in the phone, worked great !!!!, came home put in my original sim and since then my S4 has been unable to maintain a stable 3g connection, usually connects for a under a minute and reverts back to edge. I've tried many different things recommended on this and other forums:
1.- removing/replacing sim card
2.- removing/replacing battery for over 4 hrs
3.- tried different sim cards from different carriers with same result
4.- wipe and clean install with different firmwares
5.- installed cyanogenmod latest
6.- under network modes, tried selecting every combination of lte, 3g, 2g, automatic network registration and selecting my preferred network.
7.- tried flashing over 30 different modems
8.- flashed latest firmware from sammobile specific to my phone (I9505ZHUFNL1_I9505ZZHFNL1_TGY)
9.- took it to a "technician" and he managed to return my phone in the exact same condition with the exception that now the wifi didnt work (i managed to fix this on my own)
10.- installed advanced signal status from play store which gave acces to other goodies such as selecting radio band between automatic, europe and usa, tried everyone of them with no solution.
Tried to be as thorough as possible, hope someone out there has a solution. I thank you all for your time and experience. Happy Holidays !!!!! I hope I am posting in the correct area, i searched and found this is the place where my problem seems to be discussed
P.D. Since im flashing GPE right now the screenshots no longer reflect what im on but I do have a nandroid back up of this rom and I am about to restore it.
Hope I was thorough, thanks for any help
