Had the phone now for almost a week coming from a series of Samsungs galaxy's.
Think the z2 could do so much better but for a phone from such a big company its a let down.
Voice quality isn't great, volume of the notifications aren't great, the dialler screen and the whole experience is kind of lacking on the z2 over the Samsung.
I do like the hardware side of it though, solid well made device, magnetic charge port is brilliant idea.
Would the voice and volume issues likely to be sorted in SW updates (going from past history with the other devices)?

I'm coming from Samsung galaxy note 2 and I'm pretty impressed with the phone.
Yes volume is an issue you can't hear notifications sometimes but you can simply change your notification Ringtone to longer Ringtone to make better.
Voice quality is good for me didn't have an issue so far people can hear me well I can hear people well.
To get used to a new device takes longer than one week. You have got better camera better processor water and dust proof phone.
There are many other ways to be happy with your device.
I'm sure Sony will make some updates to make the phone even better.

So are you taking it back.
I'm coming from a long line of samsung devices, and I couldn't be LESS disappointed.
The interfaces on samsungs always felt like they were designed by a team of colour-blind toddlers (who all designed everything separately)! The software on the Z2 at least feels cohesive.
At the moment, i'm very, very happy I made the switch to Z2.

Same here. I had an S3 running cm11 nightlies and coming to slick experience like the z2 is nice.
My phone upgrade cycle is every two years so the new device always snappy. If you are changing phone every year each upgrade is going to feel less great. Diminishing returns and all that!
I had a g.note and it sucked imo. This device is great, really enjoying it. Wouldn't mind the os using less ram however but that can be tweaked so not an issue. It's just a shame I'll be giving my z2 to my wife once the oneplus one comes out

I do want to like it... But when it's hard to hear the phone ringing or when a text comes through etc it kinda makes it useless as a phone.
Also I am having great difficulty in copying a number from an email to the phone dialler.
If I select the number, press the icon on the top to copy then go to dialer a long press won't bring up the paste option. But when I've selected the number and go to share>copy to clipboard it works. Yet however i copy it, I can paste it into other apps no problem.
Historically, how good are Sony at fixed niggling things like this?

I just did exactly what you have described above without any issues.
Phone number copied from stock Gmail app and pasted onto stock dialer. Can't believe the problem of what you're having.

Stock Gmail app.
Same from chrome, I press the copy button and won't paste into dialler.
Yet say from LinkedIn profile, if I hold a phone number it goes to the dialler automatically.
As I say if I select the number and press share (as if you wanted to send it in a text or put on facebook) but select copy to clipboard it works. Doing it that way also has a 'copied to clipboard' pop up yet doing it the other way doesn't, yet it does copy to clipboard as you can paste it into other apps. Weird

As for voice quality and loudness, go to settings > call settings > speaker enhancement (or something similar). Vastly increases the quality of calls.

I've changed phone dialler to exDialler and that means copy and paste is fully functional now... In fact if you copy a number and then directly open dialer it pastes the number in automatically.
Also means you can swipe to call or text which I like from the galaxy range.
So at least that's a couple of niggles sorted. Fingers crossed for the sw been updated for the notification volume

To paste sth to dialer you have to type one number and than you can paste the copied number.

I bought mine yesterday and brought it back today. Vibration is waaaay to loud. You can hear it from a distance of several meters.
But eventhough it's an amazing smartphone. I ordered it from an other shop. Hopefully the new device will be fine.
I agree about the ringtone and alarm loudness, in part. I think they could do with being a wee tad louder. However, listening to music with headphones is fine for me. As far as everything else goes, it is just awesome. I primarily bought this phone for the hardware specs and the potential for modifying. :victory:
The Sony software is basically similar to android stock so saying you hate the interface is saying you hate the stock android look and feel and to be honest, I love the stock android.

Also, I would take the hardware part superiority over the sound quality. I had the z1 and managed with the sound just fine on that and the z2 has better sound than the z1. I don't need my phone to be a stereo! That's what headphones are for ?

I never said I hated the sony software, far from it, I do like its simplicity and with the choosing of a couple of apps I can get the few features that Samsung use in Touchwiz without the rubbish in Touchwiz.
But.... There are bugs.
All I'm asking, historically are sony good at ironing these out promptly.
Btw...today my rear panel cracked. Think the phone is getting its own back on me.

Personally the call quality on my Z2 is so good I often find myself asking the other person "are you still there?" because I think we've been cut off! Haha
But I understand your frustration. I personally don't mind discreet notifications for example - it allows me to feel like I don't HAVE to know what's going on as soon as it happens, I feel less "obligated", if that makes sense.
But it's all about needs and preferences

You can copy/paste from Chrome to stock Sony dialer this way: select the number you want and from the 3 dots menu choose "share/ copy to clipboard" . Go to the dialer and long press: paste.
PS: If the app already has "share" menu (like Gmail), just select it and from the long list choose "copy to clipboard".

The G2 is amazing, simply put. However, perfect it is not... but it could be with a few tweaks that should come from either tmobile or post-root mods. I'll share my wishlist, but feel free to add yours!
1. Unleash the awesome potential of the trackpad! Imagine if you could press to unlock and swipe in all 4 directions to launch various items.
2. Improve multimedia capturing! The sound quality is pretty poor and the video playback is rough. Moreover, the camera features are sparse and could use a little TLC.
3. Pump up the volume! The sound is too low for my liking... I have mine at full blast and its barely acceptable.
4. Give me tethering and let me remove apps! This is as close to stock Android as a carrier will allow, but it's not true Android
5. Allow me to map Quick Keys to functions that matter! It's weird to have menu and search as physical keys, but I have to touch the screen for "back" and "home"? Those two are as integral as the menu / search, so at least let us use them
Last, I want my G2 to smell like freshly baked chocolate chip cookies

I agree with point 5. The G2 would have been much better with a "back" and "home" key on the keyboard. For now I have mapped the first quick Key with to the launcher (in my case, ADW...), but I still miss the "back" key.

A phone will never release with tethering out of the box unless it's Google's phone like the Nexus One.
I'm starting to see the true potential in buying phones directly from Google. Out of the box the phone won't be hampered by the carrier and you can use it on any carrier. You will have the wifi tethering and whatever else Google develops into Android. I really hope they release more phones down the road.
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using XDA App
I wonder if Gingerbread will solve any of this or if it will be an update from tmobile.
Also, I'm wondering if google will even release another phone again.
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using XDA App
google has already said they have no plans to ever release a phone again.
Per the T-Mobile rep I talked to today, OTA is coming within a week. Hopefully it fixes some things, like the total lack of a lock sound file on the phone (??), MMS in slideshows, data connectivity, random reboots, the messed up sound at times, and syncing pre-installed apps back to market for correct updates. Oh, and let's us in on a Root option by seeing how OTA is done
Competition: how many times can you lock the screen with one hand without pressing the volume button!
Winner gets a 4-am wake-up call when the battery is recharged.
The second place gets an e-mail written by my pants when the screen-lock fails to turn on, following a headset call.
Third place will get a special mod that allows you to start your audiobook player with the headset button with the screen-lock on, and the screen off (a usefull feature when your hands are not free).
Just kidding, there is no such mod, the third place gets nothing.
What annoys me the most? Appart from pressing volume button while locking screen, its the fact that all my callers are complaining that they hear echo... going to exchange the phone today...
Non of the other things bothers me... I usually sleep very hard, so 4am wakeup tone that my phone is being fully charged cannot wake me up neither my girlfriend was complaining...
I had nothing to report as nothing annoyed me till today unless when I plugged my Headphone and made a call. The Volume in a call through the headphone at even maximum level is pathetically low.But that is not the case with Earpiece or Bluetooth headset.
Regards.

1. I can live with 1,5 second delay when waking up phone, but home button lag is killing me. I know, this ks because of voice command "feature", but what about users like me who will never "talk" to their phones (unless being completely drunk)?
2. The famous game freezes. I bought this phone mainly for gaming, but they are simply freezing or crashing to home screen. On all (official) currently available firmware versions. Thanks to LitePro, now i can play with no problems.
I had few more very annoying problems, but thanks again to LitePro who ironed them out. Also i had to delete most of notification sounds. No need to explain why

Every single time (see attached).
The thing that annoys me most is the same thing that annoyed me about the HD2.... whining users that complain about utterly ridiculous things on xda, opening a new thread every time they come up with some vague idea of something their phone can't do. If you want a cup of tea, BUY A TEASMAID!!!
i never hit the volume button yet i use the physical lock button
Matter of handling I suppose .oO(you're not handling it right! xD)
What annoys me is the lack of 2.3.4 update (not that I need much from it, but it feels like they're not working on it as much as on the I9000) and the lack of proper source (everyone uses the binary kernel cause the source one isnt as stable even after padding)
oh and the reason why they've hidden hw accelerated disk encryption, or the lack thereof
The fact that Driving Mode randomly turns itself on, leading to excruciating embarrassment when an incoming text or email is read out at full volume in a public place.
the wifi sharing battery drain that starts randomnly...
Lazy gits that whine and ask about the yellow triangle without even searching the threads
The stock email app, which is the only free one which works with exchange doesn't request the keyboard to bring up the spelling suggestion list - so only the samsung keyboard works with this, or using perfect keyboard and having it turned on permanently.
The stock music app hasn't been thought out well enough in that it allows you to access music bypassing the library list. This of course means using the back button never returns you to this list and they never thought to put a link in the menu to get to the music library (such a simple fix!) - solved that with player pro though
Stock SMS app not allowing you to scroll up through the messages you are replying to whilst you are replying - of course handcent gets around that.
Touchwiz launcher - can't set a different home screen, folders created in the app drawer and then dragged onto one of the home screens are now 2 seperate folders, rather than a hard link - meaning you update one, and the other also needs updating.... Thanks to Go Launcher Ex this is no longer an issue.
Tbh hardware wise it's spot on - it's just that Samsung seem to have rushed the software out.

I'm with Vodafone UK and PC Companion will now give us the official firmware update even though OTA will not.
It is still 2.3.3 but definately brings some new cool things. Here is what i've found so far.
UI Changes -
1) Finally we have landscape mode for the home pages. Unfortunately it only goes to landscape if you slide the phone open, it wont switch to landscape for me by rotating the phone. Cool nevertheless.
2) Smoother menu scrolling. Well it seems alot smoother for me anyway.
3) Themes - Basic bog standard themes, but they change the colours of all the menus etc. I didnt have this before the update, i am sure of it. (maybe my memory is wrong though).
4) New Timeout animation. It look cool ! Like an old CRT television turning off with the horizontal line disapearing into a small dot.
5) My keyboard no longer behaves erratically. For example, pressing "p" regularly printed a "Q" and a "P" for me. (pressing the right hand side of the screen in landscape mode activated the right and left hand side for some strange reason!). Very nice for me !
Settings Changes -
1) XLoud (found in the settings, sound menu). Apparently this does something to the speakers. Made ZERO difference for me. Mine was massively loud anyway, so i am guessing mine were already set up this way.
2) New silent mode in settings, sound (under XLoud). "All sounds except media & Alarms"
3) "X" takes pictures !!!!!! Now no need for camera mod, unless you want to use "R" trigger instead of "X". Me personally, will use "X". Great work by the camera mod dev anyway.
Apps and Software Additions -
1) Data Monitor Widget - It will only measure 3g, not WiFi, but i guess this is all we need. The widget definately looks cool. Now my main data monitor.
2) Qriocoty - A downloadable movies and videos app. You can either rent or buy.
3) WisePilot - Not sure if this is better than the navigation, i will test it next time i am on the road.
4) NeoReader - Bog standard barcode scanner
5) Store - Re-hash of market place i think. Not sure.
Who wants to add to things i have missed? There must be other stuff we have got?

Is there a way to disable the Timeout animation? I never really liked it in custom ROMs.
Also, to use the X we'll have to slide out the gamepad, we had to know SE would make it annoying before making it easier.

Wonder why this is...
I have been pining over this phone for months. The Anandtech review convinced me this would be my next phone. After having it for a day and a half, I just can't stop hating on it over every little thing though! I think I will end up returning it.
1) Boot-screen. I powered on the phone, and was instantly disappointed. Why was I already in this mind set when I had been dying for the phone to be mine for so long? The issue: A full white screen and a loud start up sound. Why would I want this? What if I am in a movie or a dark restaurant... I have turned off my phone to be polite, but in something comes up and I need to turn it on to shoot a quick text... why would I want it to blind me with full-brightness white and make a long, loud, annoying sound? Yes it is nit-picky, probably the most nit-picky of all of these, and they are all nit-picks, but it just goes to show how no thought is put in to anything (or rather marketing is put in far ahead of real user desires). It has me very depressed over the whole industry.
2) Photo-Upload. So I boot up, sign in, and am told to setup DropBox and have it save my pictures if I want the free 23GB that comes with the phone. I follow all its directions, then go shoot some Zoe's (a)! Within an hour of using the phone, I get a message from the DropBox app saying that phone-battery is too low to upload photos and that 512 photos remain.... WHAT? I come to find out that for each 3-second Zoe I take, it uploads 30 hi-res photos to DropBox, there by using up my storage, wasting my battery/bandwidth, and leaving a huge mess for me to clean up. Google+ Instant-Upload does the same thing. I can understand why this happens, but I cannot understand how HTC included DropBox and requested you to turn on the upload knowing it would do this. WTF!
3) Camera. The one thing I love about this phone is the ability to take a good photo in very low light. It is amazing compared to any other phone I have ever seen. The problem is, I also really loved the idea of Zoe, but you cannot do an HDR Zoe, and without HDR on this phones low-light photos are just as crappy as any other phone with HDR on (better that other phones with HDR off, but crappy is crappy, and only HTC One with HDR is non-crappy, which means Zoe is of no use to me... especially with the DropBox/G+ issue as well).
4) The menu [...] sucks. I thought it would be no big deal... I actually like the on-screen buttons of the Nexus 4 and others, but only a [...] taking up a huge portion of the bottom is so annoying. ExDialer is where it is the most annoying, as the bottom button NEEDS to be [Call], not [...]. I know I can root it and add back the shortcut, but
5) The Dialer. The first Sense 1.0 had the perfect dialer. ExDialer is a perfect clone of that dialer. When I open my dialer, I need to see a scrollable call-history with at least the 3 last calls above the #-pad, and then be able to type numbers or letters into the #-pad to FILTER the list of ordered-call-log above phonebook results. Seeing a single result and a next arrow is lame. Show me a scrollable list, hide the #-pad when I scroll it, with the #-pad visible, show at least the top 3 results (on this huge screen, ExDialer shows 5.5)
6) The Launcher. I'm so glad they put in an option to let me change the drawer from 3x4 to 4x4... not! Zeam Launcher show the dumb [...] on the bottom, so I am now using HoloHD and have my app-drawer configured to 7x8! Icons need to be the size of your finger, as they were on the first iPhone/Android. Now we have these much bigger hi-res screens and the same number of icons across the screen? That makes no "sense"!
7) Call-quality / Volume! During my first 40min call I was told I kept cutting in and out. We did the last 10min on speaker phone which he said sounded way better. I have not heard the same since then, so maybe I am already learning to hold the phone correctly. Being a left-hander doesn't help I'm sure. From my end I heard a lot of poping volume changes until I disabled Beats. Why on earth are the volume buttons on the right? I like to change it with my thumb, and I guess HTC thinks right-handers would too, but every phone I have ever had was opposite. Also I keep enabling speaker with my cheek during calls - probably a left-handed issue with the proximity sensor.
8) Charging. Man it take a long time, not just that, but while using navigation in the car-dock I keep getting a big white error box warning me that the phone is discharging quicker than the battery can be charged. WTF! I know that, most phones do that, no reason to interrupt my navigation with a giant error box and make me click ok to continue driving!!!
9) Build quality. I've seen about 5 of these now, and my DevEdition is the closest to perfect I have seen (smallest gap near power button, jack not too messed up... compared to the other 4), but it is still not as clean and nice to hold and use as my GF's Nexus 4. I have a beard and right now there is one tiny hair that some how got pinched between the glass and white part just above the SIM slot (not the SIM tray at all... where the white meats the glass). I just cut it as tweezers would not pull it out. Far from "seamless-design".
10) Google Wallet? Even on the DevEdition it is not compatible? WTF?
11) Google Voice as voice-mail won't work: "Failed to retrieve and save current forwarding number settings". I can manually change the number for "My Carrier" to my gv number, but I cannot change to "Google Voice". I have seen others post this issue with other phones too. I don't know if it is a long-lasting Sense bug or a GoogleVoice bug or what.
12) GMail (JB issue). I'm coming from Froyo. My old and new phones are both running the latest GMail but they look very different. JB is much improved and better in almost every way, but one thing that has repeatedly annoyed me is that in daylight I cannot distinguish between read/unread mail. On Froyo the grey is much darker and you can tell it from the white. Not possible by my eyes in daylight with JB GMail.
There are many more nit-picks bother me (gets hot, is heavy, no slideout keyboard), but this list are the important ones for me right now.
Sorry man...bu this is the silliest excuses I have ever heard in my whole life....it's your personal opinion and I respect that but it's my opinion too and you have to respect it...

Just wow ..... return it and be happy.
At least #2 and #8 should be MAJOR issues that affect EVERYONE who uses Zoe+InstantUpload and Navigation. They both completely baffle me as HTC included DropBox and TMo included a CarDock. ...do they test these things at all?

Everyone is welcome to their own opinion, of course, but a couple things in your post stuck out to me:

That's just...objectively not true at all.
Annoyed by #2 and #4 as well. Any quickfix?
You could simply turn auto upload off. And as far as build quality, this is by far the most well-made phone I've ever used. I had a N4 and, to me at least, the One surpasses it in almost every level (the exception being timely updates.)
I love AOSP, but until Google releases a Nexus of this caliber, I doubt I will leave this device.

Lol. I wish. I'm a Google fan boy only. I've been recommending the HTC One over the S4 for months. I guess my hopes were just too high. I'm more disappointed in flagship smartphones and the industry-direction in general than specifically the One, which is a remarkable phone, but so much is not well thought through, and I expect the S4 to be the same.
That really sucks I feel bad that you cannot enjoy the One.
After being in the wireless industry since the dumbphone era I have to say this is the best mobile phone I have ever used.
I played with the S4 on Sunday and I still prefer the One.
It's amazing that we have so many decent choices now. Good luck with your next device!

Is this a joke? Some of these are silly.
1) Who just turns their phone off when they're out and about in 2013? Really? Plus, if you have it silenced, it won't play a boot sound.
4) Sorry, but if you see the [...] in an app, it's crap. Uninstall it. Find a good app by a dev who knows how to make Android apps.
5) Can't slide left one pane to see a list of call history? Also, when you start typing on the number pad, it filters your contacts. It only shows you the most likely match at first, but if you click the number of matches right below that it minimizes the number pad and shows you the complete list of matches. Works great.
6) When the app drawer is set to 4x5, I can see 24 icons including the icons on the dock. That's about the same as the 25 shown in stock Android on the Nexus 4. And again, anything that shows the [...] sucks. Zeam... facepalm. Try a decent launcher like Nova if you don't like the Sense launcher.
7) Call quality is great for me. Might be your provider. Solavei? What the?
8) Haven't seen the error you're talking about while plugged in and navigating. Did you cheap out on your car charger too?
9) My Nexus 4 creaks like your cheap car charger every time I hold it and always has lint stuck in its cracks. The One is better, end of story. You're the only person I've seen who thinks the Nexus 4 is better built than the One.
10) Google's fault. Not HTC's.
12) All modern Android phones use the same version of GMail. How can you fault HTC for this?

WHAT? PM Sent. Dev for Nexus 4 trade, I'll include car dock. You include $$$?
EDIT - please keep to PM... this is not a buy/sell/trade thread.
If you really think the DIALER is ok, please just try using ExDialer or DialerOne (note: I do not recommend either as they have both switched to nag/trial-ware, I am still trying to find a replacment) for a day or two just to experience the difference it makes. To me it is night and day. As I said, the HTC Hero running Sense 1.0 had the perfect dialer (copied from the WinMo5 days)... other apps just copy that. I can't believe Samsung, iOS, Google/LG, and modern HTC don't do the dialer "right" (by my standards yes, but if you TRY it I think most people will agree).
Edit: Just turning off the instant upload sounds great and all, but thats the only way I have been getting pictures off of my phone since the G+ app was released (I prefer that to DropBox, and G+ was first to do it). HTC Zoe has a major drawback that you cannot use that feature properly (and they INCLUDE dropbox and suggest you to enable photo upload on first use!).
So yesterday the Good Lock app randomly auto pushed to my phone from the Galaxy app store.
Has anyone else had this happen?
It also replaced the system ui. I was able to open the app and uninstall it, but I get a notification about twice a day saying I have an app to update. Every time the notification is for Good Lock.
Is Samsung forcing it on its users now?
Also is anyone using it ? Does it still negatively effect the battery? Does it remove the theme sort from the phone as well?
Thanks!
Happened to me too. I also uninstalled it, couldn't achieve a look that I like. You can disable the notification from the Galaxy Apps settings menu

I like it, it's cool imo. The multitask screen looks better.
Hmmm...
At first, I was angry it auto updated/Installed. It.changed everything I was used to. I HATED it!
Then I played around with it a bit, and I can now see some useful features in it. Mostly the lockscreen widgets and the Routines. I'm not a fan of the notification shortcuts though.
Im going to give it a few days to sink in. If I don't miss the old layouts, then I'll keep it.
Just REALLY wish theyd update the autocorrect though. I had to retype many words in this message!

Still seems strange to just push it on users have not heard them doing that on any other devices so far. Makes me wonder if it will be the stock setup on Android 7.1 for Samsung.

I think I saw on Sammobile that the Nougat ROM being tested for the S7 has it. I'll see if I can find it.
EDIT:

I've used good lock mostly on my s6 and a bit while I used the s7edge as a loaner. I actually think I prefer the grace ux on the note to good lock these days but good lock has a lot of features and is always adding user requested features.

I just checked out the reviews for good lock this isnt an isolated incident. People are really mad, complain their phone now has "girly colors" and threatening to go back to iOS if they don't add the ability to change colors (which you've always been able to do)
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-N930A using Tapatalk
Yeah I tried good lock and it was okay but I couldn't stand the hideous colors in notifications, and it just seemed way too busy. I only used it because I missed KitKat style lock screen music album art, but I found out Samsung music still has an acceptable form of it and I'm satisfied with it.

It's not easily noticeable though. There isnt a very noticeable "colors" section.
I think that's confusing people.

Took me awhile to figure out how to change colors, buried in the routines menu. And because I use a them already, was even more fun trying to get them to match. I did try it for a few days, but went back to the regular lock screens. Also didn't seem to work real well with AoD.

been using on my 2 phones for months; i prefer the stock Android UI look as well as the ability to "keep" some of my notifications so i can follow up later. the latest version allows you to further customize the colors (not just dragging the polygons from left to right or vice-versa). takes (me a) little effort to get it like i want it, but i can then backup and restore when necessary. --- i'm a keep it simple/basic user so the less stuff, the better (for me).
also, @nuclearrage, what issues were you having with AoD? GoodLock and AoD are working fine on my devices.
