Hello all,
Feel like im having no luck with my phones. had a load of HTC One M8 all with problems.
Now im on my second Z2, first with that gap issue but this second one can only record full HD video for 7 mins on my test
So should I send it back? I tested this out by using google camera from play store and noticed the camera still running at 17 mins so would this mean softeware??

Really use should test with the stock camera app to rule out software.

That doesn't seem right. Have you tried 4K recording? Just curious to know how long your 4K videos would be before the overheat warning.
I just tested 4K recording just now, I got to 14:45 then got an overheat warning but the video saved. The phone wasn't even hot, it was just warm.
I think you should replace your phone, hope you have better luck with your new phone.
I think it may be a software issue also. I just tried recording a 4k video and my camera shut off at 4 minutes, the temperature right after the shutdown was 40 degrees C according to GSM battery monitor. I let the phone cool down to ambient temperatures and did some regular recording. I reached 17 minutes before manually shutting it down myself and the temperature was 40 degrees as well. My phone has gotten hotter than that while doing other things and it seemed fine. My guess is that the software is being too aggressive in trying to keep the phone cool during 4k recordings
I only got 4mins 30 seconds recording 4k then it shut down this is the reply from sony.
Dear Brian,
Thank you for contacting the Sony Xperia support centre.
We are sorry to hear of the issues you have been experiencing with recording using 4K video on your Sony Xperia Z2.
Sony Mobile is aware of some users encountering issues when shooting 4K video for extended periods.
4K capture is an advanced and professional video recording experience and shooting movies at this resolution can make significant demands on your phone's processor, memory and battery life.
Therefore for the best experience, we recommend you install a high capacity SD card (Xperia Z2 can take a card up to 64GB) and shoot 4K video in short bursts of no longer than a few minutes at a time.
We hope this information is of some assistance.

The key point is they say "Sony Mobile is aware of some users encountering issues when shooting 4K video for extended periods."
so if its only some users does that mean us that are suffering the problem have a faulty phone
1.14 minutes in my view isn't an extended period, recording my children for just over a minute then the phone shuts off in my opinion isn't acceptable.
Going back tomorrow but sounds to me this is happening on nearly every Z2 i havent tried 4K but will now.. But the fact that im getting only 7 mins on 1080p recording doesnt sound good...
This must be Sony software triggering a safety measure but its not needed as other camera apps work fine

This is a good point... Just tried 4K now and got 5 mins then camera shut off without a message.. Then tried another full HD and was up to 12 mins before i stopped then got the temp message...
Its a tricky one this.. After using google camera and getting longer it looked software but now with the different lengths of video it could actually be hardware....

just did another 4k video this time saved it to SD card got 5 mins then shut down with no warning and video is corrupt said 42 C on battery monitor so looks like 40 c is the cut off temp.

Could be a combination of both, I will do more 4k recordings when my screen protector arrives and see if the videos will last close to the same time as my first try.
Another test on 1080p 60fps gave me a camera shut down at 2 half mins :0 this is simpley shocking stuff on Sonys behalf..
Theres another thread on here regarding when users Z2 were made and some say theirs has overheating problem and others with same build time havent.. Not even any gaps to speak of..
Im hoping tomorrow i will recieve a better unit or Im gonna have to go back Samsungs way

So the way I look at this, is under the Sales of Goods act in the UK, as Sony are advertising this as a 4k camcorder phone, given the current issue, its not of merchantable quality. I will stick with the Z2 for another 4 months (I love the phone in all other respects), in the hope they can rectify the issue by firmware and/or by a hardware revision and a unit swap. If neither of these materialise, I request a full refund and move to whatever is the best phone on the market at that time. I'm in a similar position with the Z2 tablet and its touchscreen response problem.

To be honest guys. These are the first generation of 4k video recording devices. It'll take some time to make this feature solid

If the hardware isn't up to the job yet, the feature should probably be disabled. A bit late now of course, but Sony must have done sufficient testing and been aware of the overheating issue before it was unveiled at MWC?
I do think that Sony will be working hard to fix the problem in software, so there's perhaps still hope (does the Note 3 get that hot when recording 4K for example?) but otherwise I think this problem isn't going to go away and sooner or later some of the big websites, Watchdog (a consumer programme in the UK for those that aren't from here) and so on will go to town on them.

Could it be sdcard related maybe??

I had this issue to but it solved it by itself. what i think is ram related not SD i have a class6 SD card. now i kill often all apps and have no lag anymore. i think this is why HC put more ram in the phones and why nexus s doesn't record 720p.
ps: when it lagged the sound was off on the playback.
when i record, it has a momentary glitch after about 5 seconds, for about half a second then carries on recording, happens every time.
Yes I can also confirm that after recording a 720p film I get 2-3 short stutters on playback. Going to try again with auto focus and sound turned off.
Sent from my LT15i using XDA App
I have similar problem too. 38s video recording seems fine, but I couldn't do playback. Then when I try to force-playback the video, it went silent after 10 seconds mark.
I have the same video recording glitch problem too..
Only got a slight pause when there was a lot of motion in the clip. If the subjects were stationary without much background movement, there's no stuttering while recording.
hi.. I am part of a uk test lab that SE have set up.. I have raised this issue with them and I'm awaiting a response.. might be a week or two though as it goes via their products director. commodoor - your point about memory makes sense..the app probably needs tweaking to reserve more memory when it starts, or when HD video recording is activated.

Nope... even after turning off image stabilizer, still doesn't work.. What works is if I restart the phone. After using it for about half hour with some applications running, the problem comes on again. It's pretty consistent.

Tried it with 5min+ recording. No problem either.
I guess the problem is really the IS feature.
Yep still getting stutters in recording with IS off. Have tried changing focus settings but nothing seems to work. Have also updated to the latest. 184 build.

Hi all, just nabbed a 7.7 today moving away from the p1000. I started playing around with the camera and I immediately noticed some oddities especially when switching to video mode set at 720p quality.
Below are screenshots taken with my SGS 2, where I placed the tablet stationary at a certain distance from my printer and tested different resolution settings on the camera, while maintaining the tablet in same position at all times.
First a test with the picture mode, the distances between 480p and the highest quality isn't very noticeable but it's there,
480p
Highest quality with widescreen
This, I have no problems whatsoever, taking pictures still feels the same as the p1000 and that's good because I'm used to that.
Next is where I am really confused. When switching to video mode, I noticed the entire printer seems to be zoomed in closer and the graininess has increased drastically (I suspect the increased in graininess comes from zooming too close to it). I have checked everywhere in the menu to look for zoom settings but alas, after googling around the tablet's default camera app doesn't support zoom at all. Which brings me to an even bigger problem, as it just feels out of place when everything is zoomed in whenever I wanted to take a video recording. After turning down the quality to 480p, it felt so much better with the distancing between the object and the camera. Pics below will show the comparison between both settings,
480p video
720p video
Is everyone else having this same oddity with their camera as well? I hope its not a 'normal' thing cause I'd be hating it immensely (just using 480p mode in the meantime) :|
any kind sgt owners willing to test this out for me and give a feedback?
at least I could pinpoint if its a hardware or software problem, if its different between other tablets.
I am having the same problem. I was wanting to use my 7.7 as a uStream live streaming device for some of our company events, and because of this problem, I am using my phone instead, which sucks because phone calls can interupt!
Anyone else notice vid camera zoomed all of the way in, with no other way to zoom out. Is there a fix?
I have never used 720p video recording before, but after reading this thread I just tried it. Same problem as reported. On 480p everything works fine, but on 720p vid is zoomed in alot. Also quality is way worse than on 480p.
I guess without this thread I would have never noticed that, but this is indeed a huge bug that should not happen on final software for an expensive device like this.
It is advertised with hd video recording after all...
thanks guys for the feedback!
I was almost tempted to try another firmware but with different SGT 7.7's out there affected by this bug, it needs to be reported.
I am pretty sure it is a software problem which is causing the camera to zoom in on HD mode (digital zooming is possible with third party software as I have tried it)
Also, because it is always digitally zoomed in, the quality/graininess will be a lot worse, this is what every tab 7.7 owner will be looking at.
Could anyone guide me to report this directly to Samsung? I'm hoping its fixed before official ICS!
bump, anyone else having the same issues with their camera just give a feedback here.
+1
Also the text is cut off in settings when in landscape.. geez
I have the same issue. Tried using a video recorder app off the market and it would digital zoom 720p and 480p so that wasn't any help.

wow that sucks ! I dont have the sgt 7.7 with me but this is too serious to be overlooked
i guess based on the amount of responses in this thread most of the tab owners never really cared about 720p video recording
this is my FINAL samsung android product... I feel that they have dropped the ball this time, their pinnacle being SGS 2 and I will always remember the younger days when samsung was focused on something good,
now they are just releasing products like different branded cereal without even tasting them first.
someone explained this one to me before since I hate the 'zoom' effect of the screen as well, but as per his explanation, this could be due to the camera pixel, we have a 3.2 on board camera, using it in 3.2mpxl snapper makes use of the whole image sensor pixel array. using the 720P video on the other hand will use only a portion of that array and the software automatically fill the screen. I don't have an explanation regarding the full screen, un-zoomed 480P though,
I dont find this as a problem but if we can just have this adjusted (zoom in and out) it would be much better
Sammy juat stopped caring about their tabs. Gs3 is making sales targets. Thats good enough for them. Too bad! 7 inch market is super competative. If they dont act fast they will lose just like blackbery and their underdeveloped playbok

I am so angry I'm considering ditching Samsung. ICS finally arrived in the UK via Kies a couple of days ago. I didn't have this issue with Honeycomb but now with ICS my P6800 video camera, when in HD mode displays a zoomed image. The only reason I;m not ditching it right now is because of the SuperAMOLED screen - the same reason I paid silly money for it when I could have gotten a Nexus.
I have done some recherching and found out this is not a bug! Many devices have this. I'll try to explain what happens:
If you record videos in HD, your device has to downscale the video to show it to you on display while at the same time saving it in HD resolution and keeping the promised frame rate. This needs too much processing power, framerate would just drop. So they use a little trick: If you don't downscale the preview but only show a small part of what the sensor gets you save alot of processing power. But on the other hand it gives you the noticed "zoomed-in" look, also the image quality is less because it does not use the whole sensor (like it would on a still).
The saved video should look normal (not zoomed-in).
Hope my english is not too bad so you can understand what I mean

Standard poor copy-paste response from Samsung, which appear not to acknowledge that the device isn't a telephone:
Thank you for contacting Samsung and I have pleasure in providing the following assistance.
I’m sorry you are having issues with your device after upgrading the firmware. I can understand your frustration about this.
Old systems settings can be left on the phone after an update occurs, which is why we usually recommend a full factory reset after updating. If this isn’t done your device may begin to give false readings from system resources, or experience technical problems, which may explain the issue you are having.
We would advise on doing the following, which is designed to reset the settings on your device. Please back up your device using Samsung KIES before you do this.
1) Remove the battery for at least 40 minutes, put the battery back in and allow it to fully discharge. Afterwards, perform a full battery charge with the device turned off. Do not interrupt the charging process.
2) After the battery is fully charged, we would like you to perform a full factory reset, which can be done via Settings > Backup > Reset.
This process will reset your device, remove old system files that are no longer needed and enable your device to operate normally again.
Please let us know if your device continues to experience problems after the reset so we can investigate further.
If you require any further assistance, please contact Samsung again and we will be more than happy to help.
Kind regards

I must respectfully disagree. If that were the case then the behaviour should have been the same prior to the ICS update. Also, when copying the video off the device and playing it back on a FullHD capable device the quality is still poor.

Were you recording in 4k? To be honest, I've never heard of anybody using their phone to record a 30 minute video. Even my Canon DSLR will have to take time to cool down when recording videos for long periods of time.
Also, I understand you're mad but is it really necessary to copy and paste the same comment on every thread? I may be a lurker but I still want to see actual discussions. I don't want to see your spamming.

Yes, bro thanks for you suggestions, just now I also received one msg said convert those video n pictures in the internal storage don't use sd card to save it.
You know what, For Example I buy a 4 wheels drive but you cannot drive at extreme way only at highway. You get what i mean.
Or I buy the smartphone and the smartphone told me when I hot may not funtional and will be close down. (WHAT IS MEAN OF SMARTPHONE)
Or I buy the beer and without the alcohol.
(WHY I NEED TO DRINK BEER)
Why sony camera app can let us save our pictures n video at sd card? Because sony camera app setting got this features! But sony said will make your device unstable except you use class 10 sd card (yes my it class 10 32g sd card).
Do you think really stable when I use class 10????

I will make this very reasonable for you... The camera is processing a large amount of Data... Whether it was 4k or not, 1080p... thats enough to make it very hot indeed. The large amount of data is enough to crash the phone if its being stored in the RAM.
I agree it shouldnt close and that its quite bad but I would say Sony will fix this in a ROM shortly

I will make this very reasonable for you... The camera is processing a large amount of Data... Whether it was 4k or not, 1080p... thats enough to make it very hot indeed. The large amount of data is enough to crash the phone if its being stored in the RAM.

Z2 suffers overheat... S5 suffers from camera failure... but hey, overheat can be fixed by software update where S5 camera failure fixed only by replacing the device.

maybe they made the phone waterproof just so you can dunk it into water to cool it down

That isn't a good idea. Doing so might result in the back glass getting cracked. So Do NOT try this

"Sony Xperia Z2 won't let you record more than ~5 minutes of 4K video (and neither will Note 3 and S5)"
4K video recording is slowly but surely clawing its way into the mobile scene, and although its adoption is quite limited thus far, some manufacturers who are feeling more adventurous than others are starting to build the feature into some of their premium smartphones. Some of the first models offering 4K video recording are Samsung's Galaxy Note 3 and S5, as well as Sony's Xperia Z2, which recently got released on the market to become what's considered one of the finest handsets money can buy right now (probably until the LG G3 shows up, that is).
However, it turns out that these phones, even though they are officially capable of recording 4K video, cannot deliver an experience we'd consider truly adequate. Why? The answer is simple: they cannot record more than 5 minutes of footage in 4K resolution.

Mine will. I just tried recording 4K twice and stopped it at 10 minutes myself. No excessive heating, no camera force close. The phone gradually got warmer in the area around the camera module, but the temperature rise ceased at around 5 minutes and the temperature remained steady after that.
The new .402 update seems to make a big difference on my device - 4K recording is now lasting around 10mins from cold before it closes down.
The difference however is that it now states that it needs to cool the camera down and will save the video.
I flashed the German unbranded to my UK unbranded phone last night.

Same here. I also was able to record the same on Note 3.
How big is a 10" video ? 9 GB ?

3.9 GB (tested by me).
It will be hard to have longer than 10 minute video because of limited capacity od FAT format, which is 4gb. It's just a theory about the videos on this device. Haven't tried formatting card to NTFS or something.
If I'm wrong, feel free to correct me

Half true, the Note 3 and S5 are limited to 5 mins by Samsung, the Z2 has no limitation introduced purposfully by Sony, the limitation on the Z2 is the fact that it gets very hot eventually overheating due to the demands on the processor and memory. If your phone wouldn't overheat the Z2 can record until you run out of storage. The article is rather missleading saying how it's overheating right at the end of the article.
Bear it in mind that the time the Z2 can record 4k is highly dependant on the the indevidual phone (some people have seen 15 mins+ whilst others 5 mins, ambient temperature and how hot the phone was before recording 4k.
I have personally recorded 10 mins at 4k, yes the phone's exterior got very hot, but no overheating message.

As I bought it, I haven't updated yet. It was only once though.

Originally, I was only able to record about 5 minutes. After the .402 update, I was able to reach 7 minutes before I stopped it myself. However, after I stopped the recording myself, it gave me the overheating message lol.
I don't know if it was just my imagination but it felt as if my phone did not heat up as fast compared to before the update when it got hot in 3 minutes or so. I honestly don't think the update did much for 4k video recording and that I was just able to get to 7+ minutes of 4k recording due to the cooler ambient temperature. Either way, I'm able to consistently reach 5 minutes of 4k recording before and after the update so I'm quite satisfied.
So it sounds like we all agree that the 402 update did help this problem, yes?

Maybe some of you have seen the same question here in xda or in other forums, but I've researched deeper about the image sensor and it also supports 1080p60 video recording and even more! Actual recording is not even 30 fps, is 25 fps!
As you can see in the image
Why another thread?
https://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-g4-plus/themes/moto-g4-plus-1080p60fps-t3552528
PS: The recording is at 30FPS in a normal country like US.
First off, there are 3 threads about this on XDA already.
Secondly, unless you want to rewrite the drivers and modify the kernel for the G4+, then don't ***** and whine about not having a feature 98% of people don't use. Besides, the G4+ sensor, while decent, lacks any sort of stabilization (OIS/EIS), and 30fps is generally sufficient regardless.
Moreover, a bit of heating while using the camera on the phone is well known, don't know what will happen if one day by chance 60fps is enabled somehow

People then will cry why the device is getting so hot while recording 1080p60 and wants to fix this ASAP.
