Hi, I purchased my nexus 7 about 3 years ago, and now they have the new nexus 7 which has a lot more features. Is there a lot of hardware changes made to the new nexus vs the one that came out 3 years go, I'm wondering if I can update my rooted nexus 7 to have the features and stuff of the newer nexus 7.
Thanks
Have you kept your older N7 up to date with updates?
Software wise there wouldn't be a big difference.... But the new n7 could have hardware features the old one doesn't have....nothing you can do about it.

Yes, I usually update it all the time and re-root it. I saw that there was an app that came with it that would turn the tablet into a kids tablet, then you can put in a security code and it turns the tablet into a normal tablet, i'm not sure what it is called.
I have the older 2012 and newer 2013 N7 models. Both are running Android 4.4.2 and the same apps. The newer N7 clocks ~50 faster Antutu scores, and has a 5 Mp front camera and wireless charging capability that the older model can't touch.

So I'm sorely tempted to switch out my Acer A501 for a Nexus 7 or even a Nexus 10.
Thoughts? I'm afraid of giving up size for a Nexus 7, and I actually do sometimes use the USB port and HDMI-out, albeit rarely. Would I gain a lot in performance? Is there other benefits I'm maybe not seeing from what I have, or what I'd be going to?
been using my nexus 10 for a week now and the difference is night and day. Everything from speed to the screen. The nexus 10 has a micro usb and they have adapters to full size usb for a few bucks on ebay. Nexus 10 also has hdmi out.
Personally I'm not a fan of the 7 inch tablets.

Im sure with the post above that his point is fair. The nexus 10 does have more current hardware and the most important, software. You will be getting the updates directly from Google unlike Acer, which I have experience, does take a while to receive an update.
Well - I will never see another update for my A501, ever. So there's that.
Well - selling my A501 on eBay as we speak, because I have a TF700 on order (with the dock). It's a sad day... sort of.
I am waiting for Google to release the next Nexus 7 tablet. According to the rumors it suppose to be 7.7 with a snapdragon s4 processor instead of the tegra 3....As much as i love my A500, it is starting to show its age.
Hi,
Recently I bricked my TF300T, so using it is (IMHO) no longer an option, even if it were to be replaced.
So I'm now considering purchasing either the Nexus 10 or the Nexus 7, or if there's enough reason to wait, the next Nexus tablet.
How well do the two compare in quality?
For those of you unfamiliar with the TF300T, it has a 1.3 GHz Nvidia Tegra 3, 1 GB RAM, and I got the one with the 16 GB internal storage.
For cameras it has a 1.2 front facing camera, 8.0 rear camera. 720p screen.
I've used the cameras before, so I'm not exactly excited about losing one, if I go with the Nexus 7, so I'm leaning towards the Nexus 10 at the moment.
How powerful are the CPU&GPU in the N10?
I would like to be able to run Adobe flash applications, like Prezi, on it.
Is the high PPI display on it as amazing as Google says it is?
How long does the battery last when on stock? And how long on Cyanogenmod?
Is the 5 MP camera on the back alright? I mean, it isn't webcam quality, right?
Thanks!

The next Nexus tablet will simply be an update to the Nexus 7 model. It is due out in July and nothing but rumored specs right now until Google IO when specs become official.
I was in the same situation as you a week ago. I did a ton of research and bought a Nexus 10, and I owned a TF300 previously. Just do it. I'm very happy with the tablet and it's buttery smooth. I like the ipad screen a little better but as far as resolution goes the Nexus 10 is amazing.
Thanks for the information!
I sure am now wishing I purchased a Nexus 10 in the first place (it was either that or the TF300T when I was buying on November 24th).
Does anyone run a chroot on their Nexus 10?
How fast does it go?
I've owned both the tf300t and iPad retina and currently own the N10. I absolutely love the N10. Very fast, great battery life and screen. I went with it over the N7 because of screen resolution and faster processor.

Nexus 7 will be announced next month, so it's worth the wait. It should defiantly have a 1080p screen and a better chip. Snapdragon 600 is currently the rumor as Tegra won't be able to ship the same time and if it keeps the price of £200. It's worth the wait!
I have to say that the price of a used Nexus 7 is very appealing.
Because I'm kind of wanting one for school, I think I'll go with the N7.
Unless, of course, if there's a reason not to.

Is this still a good tablet to pick up? I'm wanting a tablet or a smartwatch, and I like the Nexus 9, but the 7 inch screen and great price are still pretty good. Even if it is discontinued, I still like it, and I would buy it new off eBay or Amazon. I know it has Lollipop too which is a plus and it's a developer Nexus device, so long after Lollipop it will have custom ROMs. Also I've also wanted a Nexus 7, but chose to buy a Nexus 5 over it. I love my Nexus 5, and plan on keeping it at least another year. The battery only concerns me about my phone, 3 hours SOT usually but I think the N7 has better battery? I'll be mostly gaming, reading, and videos on my tablet. A media device.
Do you still think it's worth picking one up?

I would Look at the N-Vidia Tablet. Much better for gaming and not Super Expensive.. or The nexus 7 2013 version. But with that said I still use my nexus 7 . I keep it on my purse for using for email GPS and Google plus while out and about. I wish it had a rear camera thou. I use it at home for xbmc remote. Ohh and i use it at home and away to view my home security cameras while traveling. For my Real work I use my Note 10.1 (2012 version).
Nobody can decide other then you. I Can tell you its either a bit slow on android 5. or there is bugs still in the os..
It's still a great device and I don't see any reason to buy a new tablet. But if I had to, I would probably pick something with more RAM since the N7 feels a bit laggy when I open large PDFs or many apps at once. And more memory would be nice, too. (I have the 16gb version)
EDIT: It's much faster with F2FS now.
If you're interested, I would be willing to sell my Nexus 7 (2012) 32 GB WiFi for $80 + shipping (US only). I bought it brand new in Dec. 2012, and have only used it at home, so it's in very good condition. I even have the original box it came in (plus the cable and charger).
I'm currently running KitKat 4.4.4, but I can upgrade it to Android 5 Lollipop before sending it out if you like.

There is hardly any activity in any of the N10 threads. Has this device been abandoned by most?
Most Lively it does seem to be the case. Well the tablet suffers also of some jitters.
At the moment all games run perfectly but I can sense a lack of power with the exynos chip. So I assume ppl have migrate to something better
That's a shame. This tablet can hang with most of new ones still
I haven't given up. Its depressing to come here all the time and not see anything "new" though.
I've been eyeing that Yoga Pro Tablet 2 as a replacement for my aging N10.
The N9 is just such a POS!
I've had mine since launch and its still going strong. I have no immediate plans to replace it.
I'm waiting until next year before upgrading that would give me 3 years with my N10. I want a 64bit processor, 3 or more GB of ram, at least the N10's screen resolution/size with AMOLED technology. It would be nice to also have a built in mSD reader. I believe that is not out of the realm of possibility.
I spent extended time with a Samsung TabS 10.5 this last fall and definitely drank a large gulp of the AMOLED coolaide. Just looking at that screen technology in a store did not do it justice but seeing it under various light condition made me a believer that backlit technologies are dead.

Same here. Running better than ever with 5.0.
My Nexus 10 is running better than ever with Dirty Unicorns 9.1 (Android 5.0.2).

Was the Nexus 10 that popular when it came out? I remember all the hype was for the Nexus 7. I'm fairly new to the Nexus 10 so I don't know how it was around this forum back then.

Probably not as popular as the N7. IMO, partially because Nvidia/Qualcomm hype, partially because 7'' screen, partially because N7 had 2 editions, 2012 and 2013 (that even had cellular connectivity), so it's only natural.
What I do know is that I'm still using my N10 daily. Still running KK, Xposed and TabletKat cos of that POS unified phablet UI.
No idea why but this device was never a commercial success. What is true is that the resolution was a bit ahead of the technology resulting in some jitters when scrolling pages but that apart everything run nicely and smoothly so do games

Google never was able to provide a nice user experience on a 10" screen.
Today is a great day! And I want to wish the Nexus 9 another great year!
Happy birthday Nexus 9
HBD and i just bought my first second hand Nexus 9 today, wifi and 16gb only, but its a descent tablet. My son (5) confiscated my Nexus 7 v2.

Starting using it a little more and you will find out how decent it really is. You'll be taking that Nexus 7 2013 back and giving the five year old the Nexus 9.
Just wish I was wrong. :crying:

I also went from a Nexus 7 2013 to the Nexus 9 and aside from the beautiful screen it was initially a disappointment. Bigger device needed more ram which it didn't get and performance isn't as good as the older tablet.
BUT... I've been using an aosp based 7.1 rom for a few weeks now and the tablet is performing the best it had ever done. It's fast and its smooth and memory management seems more like it ought to be. There's really nothing better running near vanilla android than the Nexus 7 and 9 tablets.

Thanks Astralbee. :highfive:
I suspect the ROM you are using is employing some zRAM to help things out. My Nexus 9 has now gone but my mother still has hers. I'd like to put something better than stock on it, but can't be dealing with all the issues when I'm not there, (400 miles away.)
When I see her at Christmas I'm going to factory reset her Nexus 9 in the hope of things improving.
Wow - two years old and still no _stable_ Firmware (https://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=175232). Even for a Nexus that's a new one.
Please stop all the doom talking...
