S4 I337 4.4.2 rooting/flashing - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshootin

Hey guys,
I successfully downgraded to MK2 from NB1 after taking the OTA update several weeks ago. I have rooted the MK2 and installed SS 3.72 with success on installing the recovery. I have tried multiple times following the guides on updating through ODIN to 4.4.2 again using GoldenEye and SkyFall and CM ROMs with no success. Each attempt ends with the phone not loading past the boot screen. It isn't bootlooping but pausing after the boot screen and not doing anything. What have I done wrong? I am getting tired of using this 4.3 rooted stock rom with no wifi. My data bill is going to be through the roof.

If you would have read the entire downgrade post you would know that there is a simple fix for WiFi.

I understand that there is a wifi fix for 4.3. However, that was not my main issue. I am trying to upgrade to a rooted 4.4.2 and followed the guide to a T as far as I know multiple times. Not having wifi between 4.3 and 4.4.2 was expected as I did not expect to be on 4.3 this wrong. I would really appreciate help on getting up to 4.4.2. The ROMs are not loading after the boot animations. Any ideas?

Nevermind guys. I decided to just revert back to stock 4.4.2 via Odin. I appreciate all the work by the devs to put up these guides for us to follow, keep up the good work guys.

[Q] Will I have any issues with MJA and Custom recovery install?

hello,
i just got an S4 last weekend. now i find my self wanting a custom rom, i prefer TWRP to flash roms.
im on the latest MJA firmware, so my question is i like doing it the easy way, using GooManger to put a custom recovery. is there a better way to do this? and also will i have issues since im on MJA?
i rooted using Kingo Android Root, and do actually have root.
once i get a custom recovery on my phone, ill be fine.
also what is ODIN? i feel like its something central to the GS4
Odin is somewhat of a lifeline back to the living for some devices and a way to update others. Very Very crucial to get used too:thumbup::thumbup:
As for the MJA...I as well had the full mja update...did a ton of reading and bugging people thru ought this forum. Anyway...long as you follow the OP's directions should be fine.
Most say to use Philz or TWRP I had CWM via ROM manager and am successfully using Beanstalk 4.3 currently.
From what I gather the only big deal is you can't go back from 4.3.
Again should be fine... Just follow OP:thumbup:

[Q] New User. I Need Help.

I need help. I got a Samsung Galaxy S4 (SGH - I337) Rooted from AT&T. I got two problems.
First I cannot update my version from JellyBean 4.2 to 4.3. Every time I had downloaded the update when the device restarts and it reaches 21% on the update it said's "Update Fail". What can I do?!
NOTE - (Someone told me that because I rooted the phone I cannot update my phone through AT&T servers)
Secondly my device from time to time restarts it self.
And sometimes the wifi stars connecting and disconnecting every few seconds.
Can anyone help me?
Thanks
Having root can stop the install.

The ATT updates can fail due to the device being rooted as stated by others here. Just as it has been recommended do a back up and a factory reset to see if it helps with your rebooting issues and wifi. Check your baseband under settings/about and if it ends with MDL i would recommend that you DO NOT update. The reason for this is that since you are rooted you can install ANY custom ROM on your phone, you can even install the latest google edition ROM 4.4.2. If you do the ATT updates and your baseband changes to MF3 or MK2 then you will be stuck with just limited ROMS and you will also be stuck with all the ATT/TW bloatware. Trust me 4.4.2 is soooo much better your phone will run alot faster and you will have the latest google version on your phone. I was on MDL and all the ATT updates failed on me and i just decided to install the google edition ROM and man oh man I LOVE IT!

You may not be able to flash 4.3 roms and above with no issues. Your bootloader is locked down and no custom kernel flashing either. Also, only TW roms. That said there is newer beta Safestrap 3.7.1? that is letting 4.3 TW roms flash. I think!
I am on an original phone and not up on Safestrap. Read all you can here about it. Threads will be in General and Q&A.

On MF3, your only option for a recovery is Safestrap 3.65 and you can only flash other 4.2.2 ROMS. Trying to use the updater in the GPE 4.2.2 ROM will possibly brick your phone. If you update to MK2 then you can have 4.3 ROMS but the 4.3 GPE ROM uses a different kernel and so you won't be able to use it.

Yes, but if anyone is asking for the record it's still in beta, only on Hashcode's goo.im, and if they're still on MF3 they should stay if they want GPE and check which ROMs are compatible in the Safestrap thread before going to MK2.

Appreciate the info--I did know about the beta. Too much to keep up on with this phone--

I downgraded from 4.4.2 to 4.2.2!?

Im confused about this whole downgrading situation.
Heres what i did.
Always use omega rom since i got the phone. So have gone from omega 4.2.2 to omega 4.3 to omega 4.4.2. Iv always updated bootloaders and my phone was originally on 4.2.2 MDE i think.
I decided to restore my phone to 4.2.2 and it worked however i cannot make or receive calls it freezes up the phone. So i tried to restore to 4.3 and odin gives a fail. So in the end i restored 4.4.2 changed the modem and used omega v12 on 4.2.2
What i dont understand is if downgrading is not possible why was i even able to flash the stock 4.2.2 firmware and why did i have these calling issues.
Any help?

[Q]

I have Samsung Galaxy SGH-i337(AT&T) which I rooted and tried adding a twrp custom recovery which sent the phone into ODIN download. I was able to unbrick with flashing the 4.4.2 kit leak. The problem now is, it's not really the kitkat OS but still 4.3 which the phone came with but in about device settings it says 4.4.2. My question is, how can I get it back to the original OS 4.3? I have looked everywhere for on the internet for a stock 4.3 rom to no avail. Tried factory rest that does not work. I can however find stock 4.2.2 rom for my phone, can I flash it? Need help!!!!!
You should search and read before doing anything.

Help sought: Screwed up my S4 and seeking a fix

Note: Relevant device info will be provided below.
Dear techwizards,
I've been trying to root my phone for a while, I've done it before: both my S II and S III were international variants, and rooting those devices was very simple. But after getting an S IV from America and consensually downloading a samsung issued update -- I had yet to read up on the disadvantages of knox -- my rooting and android experience took a turn for the worse.
Long story short -- I know developers are a proud bunch who value their time -- I tried rooting my phone yesterday after almost smashing my phone on a coffee table. They say it's a well known side effect of Touchwiz, but I'll leave that to you.
I used a towelroot.com root -- a wonderful tool, if I may say so. After that, I visited the CM website and picked out the compatible CM11. I never got to flashing it though, as my problems arose while installing a recovery.
I had downloaded an app, a something recovery or another. They had an option to flash recoveries on there--it would download your recovery for you and do all the work, which seemed plausible as most video tutorials demonstrated. To my astonishment, doing so bricked my phone.
I tracked back, looked for the samsung stock rom, downloaded all 2.2 gb's of it and flashed it. It worked. My phone was functional but I suspect something within it stinks. My device, apparently for security reasons, wont let my wifi or 4g to establish a connection. It's making it impossible for me to fix this problem as I can't root my device or flash a custom rom.
About Device:
Pre problem I was running a:
SGH-I337UCUFNC1 baseband. Build Number ending with: NC1.
Android version: 4.2.2
Post problem:
Baseband: I337UCUFNC1
Build Number: JSS15J.I337UCUEMK2
Android version 4.3.
If I could find my original stock 4.2.2 NC1 version and get simple instructions on how to re-install it back to stock version, I'd be very grateful.
If you know how I could fix the internet issue on the MK2 one, and provide some simple instructions of how to root it, I'd be grateful too.
If you think neither would work, and have something else in mind, Im open to your suggestions.
Much Regards,
Y
You can only use safestrap for the recovery. See in the general forum index, all things at&t....
You can't flash cm, only touch wiz based roms

I never got to installing or attempting to install CM.
Things took a turn for the unexpected after I tried installing CMW recovery.
Please reread my post
I've read it. You can't install cwm. That's what had messed up your device. The only recovery you can use is safestrap

I see. Thanks for the info. Do you know what could be done to restore my device to stock? As of now I'm running a MK2 Android 4.3 on a NC1 4.2.2 device and the wifi/4g connection aren't working.

Since your bootloader is already locked, you might as well Odin to stock. Odin to NB1 then use stock recovery to flash the NC1 update from a zip file on a microSD.
Part of the problem is that the NC1 is not 4.2.2 like you listed, but 4.4.2. That's the update you applied that started the sordid tale. When you were on 4.2.2, with bootloader MD<something>, you could have flashed CM or whatever, because you would be able to have TWRP or CWM recovery. When Samsung pushed out a 4.3 update (MK2 I believe) all the unlocked bootloader fun was over, probably permanently for this phone.
When you flashed MK2 firmware (4.3) onto the phone, parts of it don't work with the NC1 baseband, causing the problems you've seen. If you Odin NB1, then do the quick zip update from stock recovery to get all the way to NC1, you'll be back to stock and everything should work.
Once that's done, you can go through this process:
1. Root with Towelroot.
2. Install SuperSU to manage root access. (You might have to reboot, it's a 50%/50% shot... sometimes it hangs trying to disable Knox... no worries just reboot)
3. Install SafeStrap... it will create the safestrap recovery. You might need to install SELinux Mode Changer app (from play store) and set to permissive, to get Safestrap installed.
4. Boot to the SafeStrap recovery. Install any touchwiz rom. Only touchwiz compatible roms will work. I liked GoldenEye.
When installing touchwiz ROMs, typically one flashes the ROM, then SuperSU, then the NC1 modules, then the ATT BuildProp/APN file. Sounds complex but goes quickly. Some roms have some of these things built in.
Good luck! I eventually decided I didn't like the ATT Samsung restrictions of the locked boot loader, and bought a T-Mobile M919 variant of the S4. Unlocked boot loader. Woo hoo. And works fine on ATT.
