Widgets Not Updating - Verizon Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Has anyone had a problem where widgets will not update (for example, weather widgets don't refresh and switch widgets don't show a change in state)? I had thought I traced my issue to Be weather, and switched to Beautiful Widgets and after working fine for a day or two it has started to cease updating every few hours and require me to restart the launcher. I noticed this on Apex and Go Launcher.

Some Samsung specific widgets will not update if you are using a different launcher

The widgets I am referring to are third party - BeWeather and Beautiful Widgets appear to potentially "cause" an issue, but once the issue occurs, all widgets are impacted.

My internet access works fine (I still get emails) - and once I restart the launcher it automatically updates. Plus I have played with the network optimizer function (new feature that will go on and off WiFi depending on the ability to get on the internet) on and off and the same thing happens.

The re-update switch in the widgets doesn't work. Updating launchers and widgets to latest versions does not work. All widgets just become unresponsive including switch widgets (I use switchpro). They will perform the function (I.e. on a weather widget the update happens in the background and the switch will perform whatever function its tied to) but it will not display (I.e. the switch widget will not show the change in state and weather widgets will not show the updated weather).

Lol - I hang out with all apple guys. I do know one person with an S5, uses Go Launcher and has this issue with the Accuweather widget and the stock weather widget (which I believe was also powered by accuweather on the back end). I noticed that, regardless of the widget I was using, I still show BeWeather as an active process, so I went ahead and uninstalled it. I still have the issue however.
PS - I have no issues with my Nexus 7 (2012) which runs Kitkat as well.

Interestingly enough, the problem seems to have fixed itself. There were updates to Apex in the meantime, perhaps its that.
My friend with Go Launcher is also seeing the same impact - the issue is gone.

Calendar widget quit updating
Just today, my calendar widget stopped updating. Just says "No upcoming calendar events." I've tried the stock and Agenda Widgets - nothing. I'm running Google Now launcher, but they don't work in Touchwiz Launcher either. I noticed yesterday that the number of items on the widget began to dwindle.
Any fix for this?

Well, trust me I did everything for my Xperia L when I encountered this problem.
What I did for my device

Look two three posts before it for more information!
What fixed it was taking battery out for few minutes and putting it back again!

Hey guys, if you stop the cashed process for touchwiz home, the widgets immediately start updating. I'm using a verizon Samsung galaxy s5 4.4.4 kitkat. Just thought I'd throw that in...

[Q] Disappearing Widgets

I can't seem to get the Weatherbug or CNN widgets to stay visible. I put them on a screen and they work fine for awhile. Then they disappear. The widget is definitely still they since I can't put anything else in the place it occupies and I can grab it and drag it to the remove Icon. In fact, removing the widget and putting it back is the only way I have found to make them visible again (note: I did not try a reboot or power off since its actually easier and faster to just put them back).
The email widgets (I have one for gmail and one for regular email),calendar widget, bookmark widget and Beautiful Widget Home have worked perfectly.
Seem to only be effecting some of the widgets. Anyone else seeing disappearing widgets?

I have the same problem with the weatherbug widget. It is definitely still there - I can't put anything in its location and i can even long press and drag the invisible widget to the trash can.
any thoughts? Thanks!
I know the CNN widget depends on a network connection, when I'm offline it usually stops showing items. They just didn't code it to gracefully fail, it just shows an empty stack widget.

Yeah, I expect that to happen. I sometimes lose network connection at night (not great signal in my bedroom - which according to my wife is a good thing!). I can understand an empty stack widget, but my weatherbug widget completely disappears. You bring up a good point though, maybe I'll leave it in the living room tonight so it doesn't lose connection and see if the widget disappears. I hope they fix that before the wifi only model comes out.
@OP - do you sometimes lose network connection. Could your problem also be related?
I havn't had any problems with mine
Are you using the stock launcher? I know that on my phone in the past if the launcher runs into an issue this very same widget issue happened.
I have had the same issues with my Cnn widgets and the weather. I have found that if you go in to the actual application from the app drawer it will refresh the widgets. Although for CNN you have to go to each feed for whatever widget you have. ex. tech widget stack, you must go the tech feeds in the CNN app and it brings the stack widget back up. Needs a fix

I don't think that is the problem. It has been on WiFI the whole time (I have WiFi configured to never disconnect) and it's never been out of range of my router.

I'm pretty sure I tried that, but next time it happens I'll give that a shot.
And just to be clear; the widget is literally invisible (not just empty).
When a stack widget has no items it is invisible. It's likely that from time to time the widget update failed and left the empty widget.

Perhaps, but they never seem to recover. I've left them alone for hours and they never reappear. Since it only seems to happen to these two widgets I think the problem lies with the widget implementation (i.e. coding problems).
I'm hoping for an update and until I get one I'm not using the widgets.
It didn't happen for a while now, but it did last night. I lost both the CNN widget and the weatherbug widget and they never recovered. i purposely refreshed all data and nothing. it's a bit annoying as the only solution is to delete the widget (if you long press in the general area where the widget was, it still thinks it's there and I can drag it to trash).
I have tried switching to a static wallpaper. I will report back.

I've always been on a static wallpaper and I still get the issue. I'd be curious if it helps you.
Static wallpaper did not help
Having the same problem with the CNN widget. I'm running LauncherPro and I thought it was the problem but I guess not. It must be a coding issue or refresh issue.
For Weaterbug, switch off "Enable my location" if it is on, and switch it on if it is off. That restores the widget. You can then set it as you wish.
I also have this problem. Mainly with the Accuweather widget disappearing. I use a static background. Stock Kernal. Not sure why it does this but.... I am sure this will get worked out in the upcomming builds.

Google Calendar

Hello all,
I recently flashed FORCE ROM and love it. However one thing I do miss is the stock Google calendar widget. The green one that shows the entire month. I've downloaded the one from the play store but that just doesn't cut it. I've pulled the .apk from my stock backup but I cannot get it to install. Anyone know how I can get this widget back? Thanks!
Sent from my SPH-L720 using xda app-developers app
Any luck with this?
I had to disable the widget to get TouchWiz home working again and I can't find the default widget.

You can try the GO Calendar Widget as an alternative!
Ok, after re-enabling calendar widget and rebooting phone, the default month calendar widget is available.
However, as soon as I try to attach it to a home page, TouchWiz home stops working as soon as I access that screen.
All other screens work fine.

Clock widgets not updating

I've got an issue with various clock widgets on my Note 3. Each of them, sense flip clock, fancy widgets and hd widgets when used on my home screen don't always update the time, it's almost as though it's frozen. I did some digging and it could be down to any battery saving app, I've uninstalled juice defender but the issue is still there.
Does anyone have any ideas as to why this is happening?

I also did not have the problem with touchwiz

used to have the same problem with my note1, the problem is with other launchers (Apex Pro launcher) but not exist with touchwiz

PLEASE Confirm!

For years I have used Poer Toggles widget on my Android phone but on the G2 it doesnt work properly ( I have tried 5 different ROMs), once the widget is on a homescreen one simply touches the icon and it activates the selected function, the problem I have is that normally the functions that are not active are white (my color selection) and active functions are blue but when I tap say the wifi icon the wifi is activated but the color does not change to blue, same thing when you tap other functions, they are activated but the icons do not change color...normally once installed the widget works ok for a while (hour or so) but then the color changes stop working, can anyone else confirm this, widget works fine on my HTC One which is in the drawer since I got the G2, thanks
this problem happens with other widgets too (WiFi Manager is another example where the widget does not reflect the activation/deactivation on the widget)
I have no problems with it on PA 3.99, works just fine as it should.

thanks, have no idea why or what causes this issue with certain widgets... I'll try PA and see
No problems here.
and some other widgets get stuck on "loading" (BBC widget) and others are just blank (GReader)...? any ideas from the tech savvy guys as to what the issue could be?? thanks
wonder if its related to the screen itself? but am unsure
Works perfectly on any roms I used so far
Sent from my LG-D800 using Tapatalk
looks like it may be caused by a conflict of some sort between apps/widgets (if this is possible)?? did a factory reset and installed Power Toggles, and widget worked perfectly then few hrs later restored all my other apps with Titanium and immediately Power Toggles widget was 'broken' after first reboot...??

Not seeing LG Stock weather app in app drawer?

I'm on T-Mobile stock Rom. I can't see/find the stock weather app in the App Drawer, in either LG stock launcher, or 3rd party launcher.
I have the stock Weather widget and the Weather widget opens the Weather app fine.. I also see the app in under system settings/apps. I've wiped cache/data from it, but still no luck. I'm beginning to think LG only wants the app to open from the Weather widget itself?
If any T-mobile users out there, if you can answer if you have stock Weather app from stock Rom that would be great. Other variants also welcome.
Thanks

Yeah,. The app itself is only the widgets. I saw it once, but once I launched the app it disappears. The app is there but no icon. Hope this make sense.

Try going to Settings, About phone, Update Center, App Updates and see if it is in the list. It may have to be downloaded.
Same thing on a Sprint V20. The only way to open the stock weather app seems to be via a widget. This is strange. I have a LG G2 which has a very similar stock weather app, and it appears in the app drawer and the widget list.

I was also disappointed to find the weather app isn't standalone. I fixed this by using activity launcher and creating a shortcut to the weather activity. Best part about this method is that I don't need to use LG Home. This will work on all variants.

I can confirm on T-Mobile the icon for the app is completely removed after launching the app. Just noticed this yesterday...
