Android OS high background data? - Verizon Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello, I just looked at my data usage and only after 5 days or so, Android OS has used 161MB data. When I tap on that, it says that all of it has been used in the background. What could be causing this? I know it's not a huge amount but I'd really like to know what could be using that much in the background. Does anyone else have high background data usage?

Just guessing, but could it be a weather app or something built in to the Android OS?

I'm pretty sure that's exactly what it is

Program Like Backgrounder for Android?

i'm new to android. on IOS there is a cydia app called "backgrounder". i loved it because it let me redefine multitasking rules for certain programs. for example, for most programs, i made it so that the OS kills the program anytime i exit using the home button. now is there such a program for android that would let em do this? i don't want to have to manually kill app everytime, i want to make the OS do it by itself for the programs i specify.
google searches say no, but i'm still optimistic so if anyone knows, please reply.
Android does a great job of managing running applications, there is no need to kill them. If you do the app will just have to reload your battery life would go down. Also the nexus 4 has 2gb of ram. That will easily handle multitasking

I have a question. Why? This isn't an iPhone. You have 2 GB RAM. Let the OS do it's thing. If you're really worried about it, use an app like Auto Memory Manager to make the OS more agressive.
Ordered my Nexus 4 on the 13th. Still waiting.

not all apps in background are inactive though, some are actively running in the background and using resources/wasting battery life. i should not be worried about this?
You can do it straight on the phone under the development options in settings. You have to go into settings first and then phone info and tap on the build number until the tells you that you're a developer now. Then go into developer options and scroll down to apps. From there you can set it to do what you want.

Using more ram doesn't drain battery. Most multitasked apps that aren't services don't even waste battery since they are put into hibernate

Best autokill app

Hey guys
Does anyone know what the best auto kill app is for the i9505. I'm tired of having to swipe background processes away all the time. There must be an app for this that actually works.
Any ideas on this guy's?

None imho. You don`t realy need them and certain apps just will reboot themselves.
You could try Greenify
None ... free ram is wasted ram ... let android autokill them if needed .. the only ones u need to close mostly for battery life reasons are those who stay active and u can easily monitor those with the preinstalled widget ...

The best is the operating system itself. This isn't a Windows PC where you need to have free ram as overhead in order to operate. Android will kill cached processes as required to efficiently carry out currently active processes.

[Q] Low on memory

Is anyone else experiencing high ram usage on their s4? I'm down to only about 450 mb of free memory. I barely have anything running, too.

"Free ram is wasted ram" this is android not windows...you dont need to worry about low ram, amdroid handles ram difderntly than computers...and more efficiently. If the ram ever becomes too loaded to function smoothly android os will automatically clear the least ysed applications freeing up some ram.

Under settings, application manager...one of the tabs allows you to clear apps from ram
However there is no benefits on doing this...in fact only disadvantages. Clearing apps will jot improve overall device speed, it will however require those apps that were cleared to take longer to reopen as they are no longer stored in the ram.
If a specific app is slow or not running as it usually does than it may be wise to force stop it under settings application manager

Viruses from browsing.

I just have a question about viruses and Android. I know it's Linux based, I know it's based off arm and I know 99% of viruses are from apps.
Can you get a virus from browsing though? I'm not taking about downloading things from sites or allowing permission. Just browsing.
Just asking because I get paranoid at times and do all my surfing on my android devices and can't find anything about browsing. They all mention apps causing the virus.

As long as you have unknown sources checked then you're good. If you want to be sure, just get an extended battery and have an antivirus running in the background daily.
