Battery drain while plugged in using POGO - Nexus 10 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So, I am using the POGO plug directly into an A/C outlet. I am using the stock ROM and Franco Kernel underclocked to 1200mhz (and then further underclocked to 800mhz while watching movies) and I am still experiencing a battery drain. Not just a little battery drain, but a lot.
I was under the assumption that the POGO charger would charge faster then USB? Underclocking it should have made a difference as well as far as not much power being needed for the CPU.
Anyone have similar issues?
Bad POGO charger? Bad battery? Bad tablet? LoL

Hi,
Please pay attention to the brightness settings! The screen is the main cause of power consumption in your device, and when it's with high brightness on, the charger will not issue enough power to charge it! Not only this, but background apps and data on drain battery drastically, if you turn off location service, WiFi and Bluetooth your charging speed may increase .
~Lord

I'm on an airplane, at night when I'm using my tablet. Screen is always at 0% brightness. No Wi-Fi on the airline, so that's off. Not using any Bluetooth device either. In fact, tablet is on airplane mode so when location services are off. I'm using greenify to hibernate any app in the background. Thanks for the reply though.

Hi,
That's a weird issue then... Did you try charging with USB to see if problem persists? If USB charges faster then you have a defective POGO cable probably.

[?]Is it possible to disable USB charging like winMo

I just wonder is it possible to disable USb charging in Nexus One
until now i have fond nothing about this
i rely need this because i plug my phone for tethering at work
and the battery is 100% already there should be an option for this
Not sure why you need this, when the phone is 100% it will stop charging and draw power from USB while plugged in, surely this is preferable to rapidly draining the battery while being tethered?
the problem that i am using the phone for 8H for tethering (all the work time)
and the device get toooo hot i want to stop the chargeing ntile the phone battery dry than i will charge it again

From what I've seen from other threads on the subject of charging, doing what's practically a full drain and then charging again will not only create more heat but may also shorten the life of the Li-On battery.

It's not that making it 0% before charging it kills the battery life. The Lithium Ion battery's life cycle is poor and that's what it's infamous for. What makes it's life shorter is the amount of times you charge it. When you charge it all the time you're reducing the life of the battery greatly. This should help with that subject.
As far as disabling USB charging, I've never heard of it and I don't think it would be possible. If it is, that's great. My question is; why don't you use WIFI Tethering? You get the same results and you don't have to charge to use it.
If your phone gets hot while tethering, just use SetCPU to slow it down a bit... or maybe use a task killer to get rid of some of the background tasks. If your phone's already charged to 100% then it shouldn't get hot just from being plugged in.

SetCPU wont have any effect on this because the battery is what is getting hot from charging.
I still don't understand why people even use SetCPU anyways.
Couldn't you modify a USB cable and clip the power wires? I know it might be a hassle but it would be a sure fire way to keep it from charging and I believe the data connection would still work. That way you could have a true data only cable.

I've found that it almost doubles my battery lifetime by reducing the CPU speed when the phoneis on standby to almost minimum... Otherwise my phone doesnt last all day (from 8am to 1am)... It is actually one of the most useful apps on the nexus for me at the moment...

Why not? Throttling my max clock while in standby and setting a max clock on under 40% battery, has helped me increase my battery life about 2-4 hours every day...

Most people misunderstand how a processor works. Your phone automatically idles at 386mhz. Setting a MAX does nothing but limit the availability. A 1ghz processor doesn't run at 1ghz consistently. A 1ghz processor just means that 1ghz is available. If your phone is sleeping then it's not using very much at all. The only reasonable change would be to change your MAX to something lower for Screen On or setting the MAX to like 100mhz for screen off. Other than that, you make no changes.

actually, that's a good thing to do. It's called battery calibration, and you should do it once monthly. Look at the links to get detailed info:

Yes, but not more often than that (I've heard numbers like every 50 cycles (~2 months)). Unlike other types of batteries, LiIon batteries do not like the full discharge / full recharge cycle.
Take the battery out. The phone will run off of USB power only. It works with my old G1. I haven't tried with my nexus though.
USB Connect without charging Galaxy S
I just tried 'snipping' the power wire (Red) on a USB cable, now nothing happens when connecting the cable, it's as if the devices (Samsung Galaxy S and Nokia E72) need the power line to connect for data transfer.

in fact that's not a good a thing to do, the worst ennemies for liion batteries are heat and voltage stress.
voltage stress results from either full charge or full discharge , the optimal charging pattern is 10% - 90% (but partial charges in between are of no harm at all)
by all means try to avoid full battery drain and/or keeping charger plugged after full charge.
following these guidelines you should more than double you battery life span

Do you charge the phone via USB (computer)?
This is a common issue if you use your conmputer as a USB charger. Computer USB can't supply enough energy to your phone. The USB current is too low only 0.3mA or 0.5mA.
Just use the ORIGINAL charger or other well-quality charger with higher current (700mA+). This is enough for both charging and playing. Of course the charging will take longer time while playing.
The higher current will not damage your phone. It will charge your phone faster.
NotOriginal and cheap charger may have low current-output or the charger is sometimes bad designed than the phone will recognize it as i computer USB. (if bad designed than the phone takes only low current even if the charger is able to supply more)

Sometimes the radio uses more juice than the poor original 700mA charger can supply.
Causing a lot of heat to build up on the battery.

Not glad to hear that. I have never (only 2+months with X10) observed a problem with the original charger while using the phone (playing, GPS or wifi). Sometimes a bit warmer, which I consider to be common.
In general is the reason the same. The phone requests more then the charger supply
I think it's a software issue.
The bluetooth used to eat away at the battery but BB.67 sorted that out.
Wifi never was a problem for me.
But the GSM Radio is a absolute battery PIG.
It's using so much juice it's scary.
I hope SE sorts out all the ****.

Well it is probably also related to the signal level..? I use BB 58, never use BT. The GSM signal is almost full at home (while charge).
BTW: To charge the phone with the original charger takes tightly 1h for me. (from +/-30% to 100%) (not using the phone)
Mine's was not charging above 88%, but then I deleted batt. stat and it went to 98% and then 97% and then again to 100% then I used an app called Battery Calibrator and everything is fine now.
Depends what game your playing. Pocket legends with screen and volume on full, wifi connected, overclocked and set performance etc etc I can use a fully charged battery plugged in and drain it in 2hours. Its just supply and demand, the charger can't keep up.

Yeah.. it's not getting enough juice.
The GSM radio "heavy power eater" + wifi = no good.
I use battery doctor, which gives options to kill unwanted applications, monitor battery temperature, do full battery recharge cycles.
But also you need to turn off Wifi for battery save and keep u away from radiation

I checked again and I think its coming just from the battery.. those terminals. My battery never reached over 45 C and usually operates in 32-37 C and phone does not reboot at all by itself, may be I am just over cautious. Also, it is X10 HD (newer batch).
May be there is something wrong with the battery as I have flashed many roms in last few days and had deleted batt. stat everytime I flashed it. Enlighten me on this stuff. Should I undervolt and underclock CPU to avoid any damage to CPU?

Battery DISCHARGING while Charging!!

Strange Issue!!
when my phone is low on battery and i try to charge it (with the original ac charger or the usb); sometimes (almost half the times) the phone instead of charging .... DISCHARGES!!
i have tried all possible fixes. tried the battery calibration apps also. but it gets ok for a day and then back.
i can only charge my phone while its switched off!
Details:
1. on stock TW4
2. 3 pages on home
3. total widgets= 6 ( advanced task killer; digital clock; 2- circle launcher; quick battery; weather)
4. i kill all tasks always before charging!
WHAT AM I DOING WRONG? BTW I HAVE TRIED TO REMOVE ALL WIDGETS AND CHARGE ALSO! NO LUCK!
HELP!!
It sound like you might have a faulty charger, have you tried charging from your notebook, it`s a bit slower at 400mah compared to 650mah for the mains charger.

Yes, as a matter of fact, right now i am trying to charge through USB with the same drainage.
Switch the phone off for a while!... let the sucker charge.
And the problem is not always!
this is normal, already been posted. the charger is limited to 650 mA on wall power, and 450 mA on USB power. so it is easily possible to pull more power than is going into the device, say if you are gaming or pushing the device hard with navigation or similar.
next time this happens, turn off the screen for 10 minutes as a test, then come back, and see if the charge increased at all. it likely will increase.

I once had this problem..after charging for 6 hours battery was only at 60% and phone was hot..found out that although the screen was off..the phone was wide awake all the time. For me the issue was the wifi manager was somehow awake and consuming power..hence phone was hot and battery drain while charging. Check your battery usage graph and see if your phone is awake when it should not be..and pin down the rouge app or process..

That's right, but if the charger was 1000mA like HTC's it would continue to draw those 700mA it needs even while in use.You wouldn't notice any difference at all with it charging while not being used, but when screen is on there is a difference.
They limited charge current to 650 mA in the driver code, so that's why they use a 0.7 A charger. Using a higher output won't help unless someone compiles a new kernel.

I suggest you do a simple trouble shooting...charge your phone to 100% while it is off.
Than unplug, switch on your phone and just leave it for half hour or an hour without doing anything.
Than swith your display on...and go to settings
Select about phone..
Go to battery use and tap on the graph.
It will show you a few horizontal lines.
Make sure your screen on and awake time bars coincide nicely.
While your screen is off your awake bar should be very very minumum... most of the high battery drain casses will have a very short screen on bar but a solid long line of awake time.
This is normally due to some rougue app or process...and you have to narrow it down.
If your graph looks normal..than you could be having a defective battery or in worst case a defective hardware.

47 is very high i guess , normal is between 36-42 celcius. Check if many apps are running in the background while charging . Download cpu spy in the market to check if the cpu goes in deep sleep or not.
mine the temperature goes up only in one case
when I am surfing the net while the device is charging
while only charging the temperature is OK. Also if I am surfing and not charging it is OK
I also don't think that 47 has any threat on the device
Mine idle's around 22°C, hits 29°-31°C when charging on a 1A (1000mA) charger, and during usage hits 29°-33°C during high usage with occasional, brief peaks as high as 40°C. If your charger puts out more current, I could see the battery getting hotter, but 47°C seems too hot to me. I'd look into getting it exchanged, unless you have something running full blast while charging on a 2A charger. How's your battery life?
my battery life is ok..deep sleep working well at high percentage...i left wifi own downloading some data for games, not sure if that will make the battery warm up?

Battery doesn't charge, 0%, charging icon is shown.

I am afraid I've done something bad to the battery, so it became really wonky.
I went to the festival for 3 days, starting with a 50% charge, then I was charging it whenever I could, but never exceeding the 50% of charge.
The Settings > Battery tells I am 3 days on battery, there were 3 recharges up to 50% (with different chargers and once with a car charger), and right now it drained completely to zero before I came home.
I tried to charge, but CurrentWidget shows 0mAh-50mAh, battery stays at 0%, there's also a good amount of heat produced. When unplugged, CurrentWidget shows 1000mAh, even in flight mode.
I've got a faux kernel, with power saving options, I don't know if it correlates to the issue.
I'm pretty nervous about my Nexus 4.
OK, I figured out, that charger was slightly broken and was recognised as USB charger, but anyway, now I'm charging off another AC adapter, and it goes better, but still, way too long to charge up to 100%. I'm waiting for 5 hours, it charged up to 30% quickly, and now goes up like a turtle. This is horrible!
Restoring a nandroid backup didn't work either, I don't even know what to think.

Li polymer battery don't like full/deep discharge, if the battery capacity reach 0%, it will have a tough time to recharge. I would recommend you to use the stock LG charger because Nexus 4 chipset have quick charge 1.0, it will actually charge faster if your charger supports it. If you use a third party charger, it will likely to charge at USB BC 1.2 compliant standard, thus take longer time to charge.

What I want to explain is the following:
Normally, my Nexus consumes no more than 400mAh with the screen turned on and 10mAh when it sleeps. I had phone with no overheating problems for 8 months.
Now it consumes 400mAh when it sleeps. And when it is on, it jumps up to 1000mAh or more, discharges at 1% per minute rate, produces enormous amount of heat, and tough to charge.
To check, if it was an app consuming the current, I restored a backup made before that glitch, and it shows exacly the same symptoms. That means roots of the problem can be only in:
1. Hardware
2. Radio
I didn't try to fall back to stock 4.2.2 with an older radio, yet. But I will try to do so.
Battery info at *#*#4636#*#* says battery health is "good". I don't know, if this is correct. Yet.
And I was getting a "HW reset" screen after playing with the faux kernel before that. I'm not sure if this is the reason of quick discharges - I'm on stock kernel and android now.

If that's the case, it might be a problem with faux hotplug mechanism, leaving all 4 cores online all the time. Of course it could be other causes, but I hope your problem can be fixed by going back to stock.

i always leave all four set as minimum used, so theres always four cores on, no hotplugging. i get fantastic battery life. normally 4.5-5.5 hours screen on. im also a very heavy user. its even default in trinity kernel. so its not the case here, having all four cores on all the time does not waste battery. by not hotplugging(turning the cores on and off constantly), it saves time and therefore battery. the phone will still only use what it needs.

AFAIK the exynos 5 octa does the same, no hotplugging, but since the A7 is so efficient, I don't think it is comparable on the Krait. Nice to know it works fine for you, I may try it some time.

I'm on stock kernel.
This is how battery stats look like on stock kernel. For the first half phone was in-use, in the second half it was with screen off.
