Hello,
Yes I have tried that. I can not do a factory reset either is there another fix? I forgot to say that in my first post.
With Thanks,

I had a similar issue. It happened after an OTA forced an update.
To get out of it, I went to a linux machine with ADB. I booted the phone into recovery (which was the only place I could get too) and pushed CM11 to it. Flashed it using clockwork and the phone came back.

Hi guys,
I tried to update my Nexus 4 to 4.4 when Google pushed the update out for it yesterday, I forgot I had unlocked the phone (I don't have any custom ROMs on it, just SuperSU.)
Every time I try and power it on, the loading screen is endless, although I can hold power and volume down to enter recovery mode, nothing seems to be working.
I am a bit of a novice so any help or suggestions would be really appreciated!
Thanks.
The first few pages of the forum is littered with posts like this, i was in the same situation.
What i did was download the 4.3 rom from google, and flash /boot and /system onto the phone. I suspect the 4.4 rom would also work.
This got the phone booting without harming (most of) my data, but much of the UI was mangled and didnt work properly. I tried to backup my images over USB but it didnt work, you might have a better result. I also wanted to backup my SMS but they had all vanished.
I rebooted the phone to recovery (TWRP) and used adb to backup the sdcard (adb pull /sdcard sdcard) then did a full flash using the 4.4 rom downloaded from google and that got it working again. Then i reflashed the latest version of TWRP recovery and SuperSU.
Hope that helps.
That's really helpful, thanks! Is there ANY chance of a step-by-step? I'm a complete 'noob' probably a mistake to root in the first place :crying:
If you're busy don't worry, just don't want to **** things up more than I have haha.
Thanks, appreciate it.

Cheers guys, a lot more helpful than the bloke from Google. Will try it in the morning!
This will surely help
If somebody is facing boot loop after kitkat update on nexus 4 and no data backup can try to go to safe mode and backup their data. To goto safe mode on boot screen just keep pressing up and down volume button for some time phone will get into safe mode and can be backed up.
Hi,
It also happened to me, dont know if it is related to having ROOT or not, but i had to manually flash factory image (4.4) and it worked. I flashed everything except userimage.img but on first boot it took like 15 minutes to reboot and then all my personal data (photo, music...) was gone....
So just be cautious before upgrading!

Yeah that is pretty much what I did to fix mine except that I did not flash the userdata (step 10 in chapter D) so that I would't loose my data.

I had sideloaded a rom in recovery so that it will replace the lost system.img on my phone. Then, it booted up and I flashed back factory images the usual way. Everything is running smoothly again.

This is sideload guide. And the is the rom I used to sideload before: Purity. After I had successfully booted into the system. I flashed 4.4 factory images using this awesome noob friendly guide for a clean kitkat update.

Installing the driver. Refer to this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1992345
Boot to bootloader and connect to your PC, usually Windows will find the driver automatically
YEs I know Im an idiot, shouldnt have done that, I was curious to see if anything happened when pressing that option.
I USED TWRP
It does not boot anything, only the LG G2 logo.
I cannot factory reset
Is there hope?

Well, if you can still get into recovery, just sideload a rom back in.

I have an encrypted n4 that I upgraded to lollipop.
Eveything went well but i cant get past the boot screen.
The dots just keep spinning.
I dont want to do factory reset. Have too much data that I dont want to lose.
Has anyone had any luck with resolving this issue other than doing a factory reset?
The first boot could take up to 6-8 minutes... else try to clear the cache
I've let it run for 8 hours and still stuck on boot screen.
Even rebooted and still the same.
How do I clear cache?
On boot press and hold the volume rocker to get into the bootloader. Then use the volume rocker and power button to select recovery, and wipe the cache with the stock recovery using the volume rocker and power button also. There should be video tutorials on YouTube also

NotBillable, were you able to solve this issue? I'm having the exact same problem, stuck on the spinning dots after upgrading to lollipop. I cleared the cache, it's been a few hours Anyone else have any other ideas (besides a factory reset)?

It should only take 10 minutes or so. You wiped /cache and it still did not work? A Factory Reset will probably fix your issue. Hope you made a Nandroid
I'm having the same problem but when I fastboot and try for recovery, I get a downed Android. Thoughts?

I tried everything and nothing works except Android 4.4.4... I relocked bootloader, formatted everything, even erased all partitions, flashed via Factory Image, via OTA zip, via flashable zip... It used to work the first time I flashed Lollipop but the second time I ended up with the spinning dots for hours...
Maybe we should make a sticky thread for everyone having the same problem.

yep, did wipe cache and it did not work. Had to factory reset. Didn't lose anything too important (e.g. photos and contacts backed up in the cloud), lesson learned though: back stuff up, esp. before before touching and upgrading the OS. Also used this as a chance to flash cyanogenmod
Solved it without a format! I had the same issue with my Nexus 5. I manually sideloaded the OTA zip via adb in Recovery mode and it rebooted ok. Hopefully that helps you guys too.

No, all you need to do is connect the phone to the computer, get into Recovery at startup, select to install a zip file. At this pount you need to run adb sideload from command and it should take care of itself. You have to rename the file to update.zip. For this to work you do need the right drivers. Let me know if you need further help.
Stucked on boot screen
If anyone helps.
I tried to install directly the 5.01 update from 4.4.2 on my Nexus 7 and was stucked on boot screen.
After several attempts I installed lollypop 5.0 and worked fine.
I'll try to install now the update from 5.0 and will tell you later if that works.
Cheers
Hello,
Last night I had the plan to root my device. I downloaded ioroot, all the drivers and backed up everything. In terminal I tried to reboot my device into recovery from my mac since I saw that it was going to be done by ioroot, but when I did I would get an error boot with a picture of the little android guy laying on his back. I read that I hard reset seemed to fix this problem, so I did that. After I reset everything and I re opened my phone, the home soft button doesn't work. It lights up and vibrates when I tap it, but it does not actually take me home.
So currently the only thing that has been done to my device is that I have factory reset it.
Also, in the drop down notifications bar, the settings button does not do anything either.
[UPDATE] I am also noticing more issues. Such as the volume buttons are not displaying the volume anymore and I cannot lock my phone, only turn off display.
[FIXED] A factory reset ended up fixing it.

the problem might be that there is some issues with files, I still remember that I also had the same problem on some roms when I had no gapps but you can fix your issue by reflashing stock.
Try to root with stumproot but I believed that IOROOT worked fine on kitkat stocks.

I have not done this before. Would this link be a good guide to follow to do that? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2432476 Or is there a better one you could link me too?
Would you recommend trying to reflash first or let stumproot do its thing? Idk if reflashing requires root, I would assume not.
As far as I know, what I should doing is, reflash to stock, update to current version, then stumproot?
[UPDATE] I also am noticing more issues. Such as the volume buttons are not displaying the volume anymore and I cannot lock my phone, only turn off display.

I recommend flashing first to stock4.4.2 using that guide. Read carefully and download the right files for your phone.
After that you can root your phone with stumproot or ioroot. I suggest to try stumproot first once you have reflashed stockrom.

So I followed that guide, but the home button and other functions are still not working.
I did the Normal Flash and the cse flash.
I attempted another factory reset and this time it fixed the problem. Thanks for your help though! I then used stump root which worked

Alright, goodluck further :good:
Today and after deciding to simply restart my Nexus 6P, it booted into TWRP menu, I tried to reboot again, but no luck. can someone please help?
is there a way to get off the TWRP menu and boot my phone normally?
Note: The root used to simply work fine for about a month now.
Did you take an update? Rom details? You basically said you stuck a fork in a microwave and it sparked.

I will have to call you out here buddy. If you have indeed tried to flash all factory images, you won't even have TWRP in the first place.
Go to this wonderful guide by the wonderful @Heisenberg, and scroll down to "10. How To Flash The Factory Images (And Return To Stock)". You will find very clear instruction on how to return your phone to its factory stock state. This will most likely get rid of the problems you're facing.

If you had flashed the full factory images I don't see how it's possible at all to be in your current situation. Explain how you flashed them, and exactly what you flashed please.
