I have been thinking a lot lately about my phone, I have a Galaxy S and I felt some features that were not there or missing without the third party apps, I think putting these together will help making an already amazing operating system even better
1. SMS and call history
Google should come with service where these are backed up on Google servers, or have the option to save it to the external sd card, so that when you format your phone they should be back again. (Yes I know there are third party software’s that does that but something like that should be a part of Google android)
2. Google Talk with Video Integration.
(Right now Yahoo, fringe etc. are there for video chat) but Google should come up with their own video integration service.
3, Google doc support.
Android is lacking with Google doc support, I hope they come up with it, in coming versions.
4. Google chrome,
It should be the default Browser, and should come up as preinstalled browser on the Android.
5. Bookmarks.
Google should come up with a service like xmarks and xpass, which saves your bookmarks and passwords on the servers and sync them with your home and office computers.
6. Video/music player.
I saw this somewhere on the xda where they have put in upcoming default player for android that would be a great thing to come. Also I would want it to have an option where it gives you option to select the directory which you want to scan and put into the music and video player. I don’t want it pick anything and everything (Like the game video/music files)
7. Google sync.
Google should come up with a default pc application, not something like HTC has their own, and Samsung has bull**** kies. Also it should have options to save a back up for settings, sms, applications and call logs etc.
8. Market.
They made the interface better but they still need to sync it much better to the Google account and next time when you format the phone, the applications which the person has always be using, should come in the list of previously installed applications, so that we can install them all in one go.
9. Power saving feature.
I used the task killers etc.. They don’t really do anything. but one thing I do not know when you close the application why does it keep running in background? We don’t really need this, it should be more like Symbian once you close the app, it should not run unless you rerun it.. (This will help fix the battery issues)
10. Google maps.
They are getting better and better day by day with maps, but one thing I would say is still lacking is the navigation part. Google Navigation is really not as good as the Igo, Garmin etc. They should allow you to download the map of the city you are in and should show route by route navigation. Also There is a Mark your place option missing, you can mark your house etc, unless you save it as a contact on Google maps, which is annoying..
This is my experience on Android and features which I feel are missing and can make the Android the best OS on the earth ...
PS. This feedback is more related with software only, if you know any feature that you miss the most, comment

Guyz this is not something random picked from some site.. this is what I feel is missing on the android... worth a reading.. may be some devlopers put these issues accoss and might help us all
Contrary to popular believe google software is far from the miracle work it's made out to be. In fact their software is often rather immature. Best example of that is google maps but the whole android os is another example. However, unlike microsoft, google is not looking to provide an all in one solution by themselves. They are in fact intentionally leaving out many of the features you mention in order to make those a commodity (and it works, there are apps for most of those functions). It's bad and good for the enduser at the same time. But considering google's software quality, I think it's mostly positive.
PS: Leaving voice and video out of gtalk on the mobile is retarded. But it will likely change with the new apis introduced in android 2.3

Market should be a part of Android (AOSP), not Google Apps.

Syncing to a server would enrage privacy organisations, regular users don't flash thier phone every week. But being able to read them in Gmail would be awesome.

Browser already uses the V8 engine and the webkit renderer, just like chrome.

it's called google apps (gmail, calendar, picasa, enz)

AOSP roms automatically reinstall all your apps after a reset/flash, samsung disabled it?
9. Power saving feature.
Apps dont keep running, they just keep in the RAM so they don't need to reload. They only keep running if they have ongoing processes, and then you probably want them to keep running.

Some tablets include this.
I want the ability to read and modify Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files for example.
Also, I want to be able to read PDF files. I have several books in the PDF format.
Not sure, but you could easily download one off of Play store. They have some free ones.

There's literally hundreds of apps that can do that stuff. One suggestion for you: when you get your tablet install the amazon market on it (go to amazon and read how). Every day they give away a free app. I've been getting the app every day for a year or so and there's been at least 3 office suites, plus lots of other great apps (and a whole bunch of really, really bad games).
If you end up buying any of these, I'd suggest quickoffice pro HD and ezPDF reader.

Most likely not but easily the best IMO is Documents to Go. Forgot how much it is but functions so much like MS Office.
QuickOffice Pro works great also & I believe it was bought by Google or someone similar. 4.1 came with a viewer but I don't see it anymore on 4.1.1.
I think a major advantage of the Nook is being able to go for 2 or 3 weeks on a single charge, if correctly setup after rooting. That however, relies on being offline as WiFi drains the battery so fast. I tend to keep the Nook for offline things because of this and use a phone for online things.
Most of the apps I have are related to reading and reference. However, I've found a few that don't need connectivity that often and so makes most sense on the nook rather than a phone.
Here's my list of apps in order of unusualness:
- Google Authenticator; doesn't need connectivity and without QRcodes you can configure it manually. Bit of a pain to do but it works.
- "Simply Do"; simpler to use than evernote. lighter and won't screw the battery
- Opera Mobile; can browse local files offline. Just use "/" as the address to get started. I save webpages in myfiles, bookmarl my files and then read it later. I find this simpler than "Read it later" or whatever the latest thing is
- Photos for reference; can be useful to be able to see your photos this way; battery lasts longer than on the mobile phone. Can have photos of reference docs this way. You can save a QRcode of a Bitcoin address or private key. Probably scope here for more possibilities
- KeePassDroid; keep your passwords here
- AGP encryption; it can actually encrypt local files with your PGP key or use a passphrase so this too can
- NewsRob, gReader, Instafetch and even syncing things like email only need intermittent connectivity so you can get your articles and then carry them elsewhere when offline. Need a better offline article sync app: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1811873
- Maps. I use MapDroyd with about 4gb of maps but it's a bit basic and only there in case my phone battery runs out. I wonder if there's a better alternative? Of course it's a bummer without GPS but that's how maps were in the old days right? edit: see Orux Maps
- "Calculations"; this app has a calulator but also remembers your unit conversion rates for you

- Dictionaries; which do you recommend?
- offline translation; I only know of dictionaries to look up individual words, nothing that works offline but can do sentances

Generally my focus here was offline apps or apps that don't need much syncing and so can save the battery the most. I figured games aren't essential so won't include. See rest of thread of these things.

Try colordict, it really is useful and simple. And is compatible with many of 3rd party readers.

I'm currently trying to optimize my rooted Nook (MinimalTouch) by disabling features that I don't use:
- I've started with a Barnes&Noble services. I've frozen them all (like ~10 of them). STR works perfect.
- Then I've frozen few Google apps - Talk, Calendar and Gmail. It happend that without them I can't use Search Market (downloading files not starting). Does anyone know which Google services I can remove in order to keep Market working?
It's really hard to keep track of what causes what in battery drain problems.
Some of the problems can be intermittent.
I seen to have less (no?) problems since disabling most of the B&N stuff and never installing any Google stuff.
I also disabled all the unnecessary receivers in the stock Reader.
I had seen problems in the past where the touch panel did not turn off in sleep mode.
In android 2.1 it is required to have google talk working in order to make market work.

BTW: Does your Tapatalk2 works correctly on Nook? I can browse catalog of recommended forums (post, login etc. works) but I can't find my own forums (which I'm sure they support tapatalk). Is this normal?

thanks for the colordict tip but its only a dictionary. can't do multiple words a t a time and have to click search on each word.
agreed that its best to avoid gapps if possible and find an alternative way to getting the .apks off market.
I didnt have much trouble with b and n apps? I disabled a few things but can't remember now. certainly phone.apk helped removing.
I'm with Renate here, I find that rooting and then sideloading the apps I want rather than having the market running seems to do my battery a lot of good.
Unlike Renate, I'm not able to simply write my own apps
I'm surprised that Amazon's appstore doesn't seem to be equally as much work for the battery as google's is, but it doesn't seem to be, even though many of the Amazon appstore-linked apps do check to be sure the appstore is available.

No, as a standard NST issue, it cannot search using default method. But I did it by setting Tapatalk on my phone, making a backup using titanium backup, or go backup, then just restore it on Nook. Searching is still a problem but it takes 3 minutes.

600x800. Some grayscale images work very well (Ansel Adams photos, for example). Between Google image search and Deviant Art, you should find plenty of line art!

SSH Droid works very well for both command line and SFTP access. I use it with WinSCP in SFTP mode.

ES File Explorer allows both root access, and direct access to networked (e.g. Dropbox) folders in the same interface, which is very handy. It suffers the "too colorful" experience on the NST that a lot of apps do, but it's definitely usable.
As we all know polaris office is kind of limited in many ways in terms of function and performance. The only time I use it however is when I need to add handwriting annotations for both word documents and PowerPoint slides. These are nifty features and I've tried a few but yet to find any office apps which can do it. Any suggestions?

Kingsoft Office brought out an earlier version of their office suite that supported the original note's s-pen. It's still available at their website. Download and install it from there, not the Playstore. Do not update it as the update no longer supports the s-pen. http://www.kingsoftstore.com/android-office-samsung

Kingsoft Office is my fav Office app since it's the only one (AFAIK) that can read and shows equations written in Word files (in the PC, with the standard "Equation Editor" or with the Commercial "MathType") then imported in the GNote 10.1. You can't edit them (they are imported as images) but at least you can see them with Kingsoft Office.
All other office apps I've tried so far (quite many) fails to even show them .
Having said that, thanks for your advice about using the Kingsoft Office app (downloadable here) that support the S-Pen. I didn't know about that and I've replaced with it the app that I had previosly downloaded from Google Play.
Anyway I'm at a loss at using the S-Pen for handwritten annotation.
I can annotate, but I can't see any option to change the ink color or size or to erase some annotation (apart from the undo option).
Maybe there's none of these features, or maybe I'm missing some setting or some way to access them through the menu.
Can somebody help me?
When using the samsung s-pen supported version, you can add on screen comments in different colors by pressing the s-pen's button once while the stylus is touching the screen. This brings up the s-pen's color/pen/brush/pencil settings. After you've made your selections annotate away. For revisions, you must go the traditional route of choosing the keyboard s-pen, which then gets converted into text. I've included 2 screen shots showing the s-pen option box and then different colored comments.

Anyway it seems that there's pressure sensitivity while writing but it disappears just after the drawing is processed into the document.
There's no eraser too?

Rather than sensitivity, line width seems to be the only option (in the s-pen settings box). So far, I've not found a way to erase so I use the undo tool bar feature. There are no real instructions that I've found; perhaps there's an erase feature buried that I've not discovered. I don't know if this developer would be willing to update the s-pen version if enough note 10.1 users would express interest. If they updated it and only made it a paid app, I'd be willing to buy it. I think it's the best Android office suite to date.

I was able to use the s-pen in word documents, but it didn't work in spreadsheet and presentations. Is there a way to do that?

Unfortunately, I don't think so, but I haven't found any online instructions for the s-pen enabled app so I've just stumbled on things by trial and error. I wish Samsung had encoraged this developer to update s-pen support for the note 10.1 and note 2. This is one of the best Android office suites, but the updated version doesn't support the s-pen.

I don't understand your question.
If you are referring to "Equation Editor" it's part of MS Office for PC. Can be installed as an extra and can then be used in Word, Excel, etc.
I don't know about more recent versions of Office but I think something similar is there too.
Anyway that's OT here.

Last version (v. 5.3.2) is here in GooglePlay.
For the other (older) version with S-Pen support (Kingsoft Office - for Android Samsung Galaxy Note - v. 5.2.128694-en00040) you go here and download the .apk file. (android_office_samsung.apk).
Then you copy the .apk file somewhere in your GNote 10.1 and (with any file manager) tap on it.
In so doing, the app will be installed in your tablet.
Anyway, before doing that, be sure to have enabled Unknown sources in "Settings - Security", otherwise you won't be able to install manually an app this way.

Anyway, as a personal consideration, I'm thinking of returning to the most recent (5.3.2) Google Play general version.
It seems that The GNote/SPen version development has stopped and it doesn't offer very useful SPen improvements apart from the possibility to change the handwritten notes pen colors and size.
For instance there's no eraser and (apparently) no pressure sensitivity.
Furthermore the navigation is more awkward: you haven't the option to turn off the writing pen so that you can't use the pen just to scroll a document but must remember to use your fingers instead to do that.
So I think I'll go back to the newest general version, waiting to see if the SPen version resumes development.
I've been using the Google Cloud Print app on my Nexus 10 since it came out. I went to print one of my notes from Google Keep today by long pressing and then accessing the share menu. However, Google Cloud Print was no longer listed. So I looked in my app drawer and noticed it was missing. I then went to the play store to reinstall in, however it was already installed! The strange part is when I click on it, there is no option to open it or uninstall it like there usually is. I figured this probably got messed up when the Kitkat update came out. But I looked on my wife's Moto X which is also on 4.4, and hers can still access the Google Cloud Print app from the share menu of Google Keep (and it still appears in her app drawer). Her phone is just Android 4.4, while my Nexus 10 is 4.4.2, so I'm not sure if they changed it between 4.4 and 4.4.2. Since I only had regular 4.4 on my tablet for about a week, I don't recall if the Google Cloud Print app worked when I was on regular 4.4 or not. I'm guessing Google may have disabled it thinking that app developers would all start using the new print capability of Kitkat. But not even a 1st party app like Keep supports it yet! Does anyone else have this issue? Or at least a work around so I can print from Keep?
I'm using Google Print, but I don't have an app, it's in Settings, towards the bottom. I've had no problems.
Edit to add that I dont use the Keep app, so cant help you there. I mostly print from Gmail.

Thanks sttovo. I do have it in Settings under the Printing section as well. But it seems that only shows up in apps that have the new Print capability. The nice thing with the old Good Cloud Print app was that you could access it from the share menu in apps. Once more developers add the Print capability to their apps, this shouldn't be an issue any more. But in the mean time I don't know that there is a solution for apps that don't have a Print option but do have a Share option.

OK - I understand now. The native Google Print integration for 4.4 is for certain apps, like Gmail, Chrome and Google Drive.
I use Printershare Mobile Print (not free) to do what you stated. I don't know if it integrates with every app, but it did have a share-to option. I haven't used it about 6 months, so make sure you read up on it if you decide to buy. Sorry I wasn't of any help.

Thanks sttovo, I will check that out. Prior to the Official Google Cloud Print app, there was one by a 3rd party app that I used (also called cloud print). I may try that one again or try the HP e-Print app.
Any local network only alternatives to Android printing?
I get that the cloud is the way of the future and there's a huge convenience factor (no drivers, print from anywhere, etc...) but I just prefer not to hand sensitive docs out to a cloud service just to get them printed. Is there a way to remove the "Cloud" from printing with Android? I have never been able to print from Android because I'd really like to keep my printing local and not send sensitive documents to the cloud.
If my printer has no gateway configured and I'm able to disable my Nexus 10 wi-fi and print a document, I'd be on cloud 9 (ok, bad pun intended)

Look at my post, 2 before yours, is that not what you need? I know it's not free, but it doesn't involve the cloud at all.

Thanks sttovo, I will check that out. Prior to the Official Google Cloud Print app, there was one by a 3rd party app that I used (also called cloud print). I may try that one again or try the HP e-Print app.

Cloud print and cloud print pro (registered version) that is a frontend by Paulo Fernandez for Google cloud print. It works with any app that has a share button and can print from drop box, Google drive and sky drive or even straight from the clipboard Or Google calander. I love this app. I noticed Google added the cloud print to a few of their apps this time around, but still prefer this app (along WITH google cloud print) since it has many more setting you can change . you can also still print from almost any app/screen on the n10 (can't with Google print alone, yet)
I absolutely think this is where Google print should be heading, but it is already in this app!
