My apologies as this isnt really device specific although I do use a Note 3 with ATT. I have had a family plan for at least 8 years now, and have always been on unlimited plan for my line (Im the acct holder). Yesterday I logged into my account to see that it was now a '10gb Family Shared Plan'. I call them up and they can't tell me why or how this changed but will be looking into it.
Ironically last month was the first time I surpassed the 5gb throttle limit. Its almost as though they are purposely downgrading my plan.
Anyways not too happy about this and hopefully its a relatively smooth transition back. Just annoyed this 'randomly' happened. Has anyone else experienced something like this lately?

Have you been tethering? I've heard of it happening when excessive tethering was used without a tethering plan. I was warned once. I dont risk it anymore. I love my family unlimited too much.

No, never tether. I only used 5 gigs last month because I got a new car with bluetooth (yeh, welcome to the 21st century right! lol) and stream for 2 hours a day since i commute a lot. I probably used just over 5gigs though as I got the text notifying me of my usage just days before the end of the billing cycle.

That is unusual then. Hopefully it was a mistake. I've gone over 5gb a few times. My daughter did 12gb once. I mean it's unlimited. Right?

It does and it's actually cheaper per month.

Actually everyone on family share plan with 10 or more gig data automatically got switched over, I had mine changed to it and the lady told me everyone would be switched over automatically. I'm sure they will switch u back, but we're probably hoping people would be willing to sacrifice unlimited for cheaper overall.

Here's a few things to note.
Unlimited is not called Unlimited anymore. It's called Unlimited access, but will be throttled at 3gb.
If you tether, you will be notified by text that you will be switched to a tethering plan the next month. (had this happen lol)
AT&T can switch you of unlimited anytime they like, read the fine print contact.
On a side note, I was on unlimted until they keep throttling me. Coming off that slow unlimited access made life better for me.

I still don't understand why people on ATT are trying to cling on to their Unlimited data. The people on Verizon have good enough reasons to (Verizon doesn't throttle or get pissy if you consume 10s of gigs per month, for now anyway). But on ATT your Unlimited plans are basically pointless at this point. After 3-4GB, your data essentially becomes useless after the throttle. For all intents and purposes, you can't tether. And it's actually cheaper to get access to more high-speed data every month on the newer plans. They literally made switching over to limited data a much better deal (or made keeping Unlimited a worse one, depending on how you look at it).
Just switched mine, got 10gb, tethering included and actually cheaper.

Keeping unlimited.
The catch is that if you go on the shared minutes planes, your phones are no longer subsidized... So if you upgrade your phones every two years, the cost ends up being the same, if not greater when paying monthly for the phones. This in my calculations is about a wash in terms of cost, however you do not get to keep your phones at the end. These are great plans if you byop however.

You keep your phone, just pay the remainder off. 9 out of 10 times phone has scratches, which means no giving it to therm. The thing is, you might pay the same amount in the long run (I won't because I'm saving $120 per month which equals $1440 in a year, at end of year I only owe $248 left on phone. Which leaves me with $1192 in savings.) Then I get another upgrade, which is every 12 months instead of 24. Plus no upgrade or activation fees. So tell me where this is a bad deal for me at all?
Oh and by the way its not shared minutes, in fact is unlimited talk and text.

It sounds like a better deal for you for sure. The way i'm set up to switch to next save me only $20/month before taxes. I have four lines so I get 2 upgrades a year. So I pay 240 more per year plus about 200 for each phone. This equals 640 a year with two phones. If the average phone on next is 30 a month, then there is the wash. My minutes are not unlimited, but on all lines mobile to mobile is unlimited and I rarely use more than 300. Plus they roll over so I have lots banked. Texting is also unlimited. Plus I can sell the phones at the end (I never do, though, and have 8 phones to sell or get rid of of you include the 2 phones each of my two children have to play on).
I guess how good of a deal next is depends on how good of a deal you had before. ...
They're absolute garbage. I had a 1GB family plan (you know, wifi everywhere and I never even pass that 1GB at all), so.i called them up to see why my bill was a little high then this girl was telling me that she has a better plan for me. 2GB for $5 less. I was like "hell yeah. Switch up now". Next bill was $15 over. LOL
Called them up again and downgraded back to my ole 1GB. I don't know why the lying. Do they really think people are that stupid? If you ever call them, first thing you wanna do is ask the employee about their ID number. Just say " I'd like your ID number". They can't say no. They'll get in trouble. So when an employee screws you over you just call them and ask for a manager and tell them about the employee that did it and give them the number to identify him/her. Other than that names don't work.

Att almost had me, I was about to let go of my unlimited data, I wasn't gonna save much since I wabted the 20 gb shareplan, but then I found out about the scam, I have 5 lines, sounded good to only pay 15 for each additional but how about when my mother in law wants to update for some 50 dollar renovate contract new smartphone, she never gets the most expensive, the point is that If I later want to upgrade for the best cheap offer new phone then it rises 25 for each line so instead of 228 that I pay I will end up paying 328, or if I get the next for every account, lets see at least 27 a month for 5 lines, wow arround 360, now how in hell thats gonna save me money.

After 7+ years as a loyal Verizon customer, and 2+ years as a fanatical Incredible user, I'm leaning strongly towards leaving it all behind. The straw was the recent change to mandatory Shared Data plans. I just can't justify spending $30+ more per month when I upgrade for essentially the same service I am getting now. I understand why Verizon needed to make a change...but it's just too much for me.
I've been eyeing the GNex for a while, and with the continued disappointing turnout of HTC on Verizon (Inc 4G...really? Small screen, no ImageSense), I am planning to get the $350 unlocked, GNex direct from Google and then sign up with a month-to-month plan with a GSM provider.
Sad to see it all go, but also excited with the new possibilities.
If anyone else is mulling this conundrum, I found this thread to be very helpful...

I'm not happy with that either but to my understanding the shared data is an option not a requirement. I believe the tiered plan will still be an option.

Im up for my upgrade so i went on the vzw site logged in, went to upgrade device, picked a phone and went to the plan portion and there is only the one, 40 per phone 50 for 1gb shared data. No option to keep my current plan unless i buy the phone for retail with no contract. I am just going to save up my cash and when the inc dies, buy a phone retail or off amazon or ebay or something. That way i keep my 60 dollar a month bill with the unlimited data plan forever. I dont do a lot of talking or texting so the whole unlimited deal dosent really seem like a deal to me. And 50 for 1gb, thats just outrageous.
I know losing unlimited sucks, but I voluntarily gave it up. The shared plan gives me unlimited talk time, and 4gb a month between my girlfriend and I. We only averaged around 1.5-1.75gb per month each anyways and now that I figured out my employers network password I'm on their wifi at work lol. Saving $40 a month and gaining unlimited talk time was well worth it for me.
That said, I'm still considering leaving Verizon. Their service has been exceptionally poor in my area lately. My friend at work is on sprint and using speedtest his 3g speeds are consistently much greater than mine. But I don't know if I want to keep my Inc until January 2013.

I plan on doing the same thing when the new iPhone (yes, sorry) comes out in Sept/Oct. I've been a Verizon Wireless customer since I was 16, and would end up paying about $20 more a month on their new plan as well. Verizon has good coverage where I am, so I'll either buy it unsubsidized and keep my unlimited data, or switch to a GSM month to month provider.

The Shared Data plans work great if you have someone to share it with. Engadget, Android Central, et al have done the analysis and these are good deals for groups of 3 or 4 people who use less than 4GB together...for individuals like me it's a really bad deal. I would basically pay $30-40 more for a capped data plan.
I've thought about getting a retail price phone...you can get an Inc 2 on ebay now for $250-350. But then I wonder, why settle for an old phone, when, for the same price, I can get a brand new, unlocked GNex and be free of all this. Coverage is a concern. Support is a concern. Verizon has been fantastic for me on both. But I live in DC and friends with AT&T and T-Mobile are happy with their coverage.
Still haven't decided...but I appreciate everyone's thoughts and feedback. The Incredible dev community has been just that....another reason I'm looking at the GNex...gotta follow the devs.
Yeah dude I'm considering a nexus for my daily driver. I'm already on tmobile and pay $15-30 a month. They have a $30/month prepaid plan, 100 voice minutes, unlimited texts, and unlimited data (first 4 or 5gbs at hpsa+ speeds). Beats any Verizon plan for a single user. Only thing is you have to have T-Mobile coverage in your area. I get better coverage on T-Mobile than Verizon in some places where I live

It even comes in at the beach where vzw has no service. But straight talks best android phone is still junk. If i could get my inc or another newer better android phone flashed to straight talk, i would leave big red in a heartbeat.

With page plus its the same network , you can bring your own device and the data is throttled back.
I have had good coverage when I travel.
Just ran the numbers for all the lines on our plan and it is better for us to stay with what we have now. If we do upgrade we will go retail or upgrade and opt for the 2GB non-shared data at 29.99 It will keep our price the exact same and the lines that have unlimited can keep it. It also makes it 10 dollars cheaper for us to do 3 lines with 2GB data than shared 6GB data. I totally get the new plans and such, but it suck to only be one phone on the plan.
If we didn't live in the middle of nowhere we might change, but VZW offers the best service for us.

Have you tried calling VZW customer service? I went into my local store last week and asked the gal at the counter what I needed to do for my stbxw will be getting off my account and getting her own account. She said in my case that she made a note in the computer allowing her to take her phone/phone number off my account. But once she did that, then I needed to call customer service for them to change my family share plan to something else, because they no longer sell a unlimited data plan so customer service would have to make my account a single tiered account so I don't get cornered into a share everything plan and lose my unlimited.

That is my understanding from the rep I spoke with on the phone on Thursday. I was told the 2GB plan would still be around for any line I would want to put it on. I think it would for sure be something you would need to call in about b/c I don't see it listed under online options.
i had the incredible, went through a bunch of phones, lost some money, but ended up on a nexus with unlimited data. now that i only have ~9 months left on contract, im thinking of going to tmobiles $70 a month unlimited everything. its more then i get now, for a lot less. if you guys are in the market for used phones, try swappa.com. really good site. ive used them several times. nexuses can be had for $360
So I usually buy my phones full retail anyway and I use a lot of data. We all know how T-Mobile $70 plan has unlimited everything other than data, 5gb. I dropped by T-Mobile store and their new plan, has unlimited data! Same price, before 15% discount! Problem? Contract... I have 14 days to cancel and just go month to month, but lose unlimited data... What do you guys think?
I've had monthly 4g before and loved speeds, the fact that it wasn't unlimited though...

Yeah, the Value Plan? I was considering that too, maybe the 500 minute plan with unlimited data for $60 too depending on how much you talk on your phone.
So far I ordered the prepaid sim and going to activate the $30 plan, if I don't like it I can just go to the Value Plan.
One very bad thing about T-Mobile is that any changes you make to your plan, it renews/resets the contract to the current date.
Be very careful with T-Mobile contracts.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda app-developers app
Yes I don't like the idea of a contract, specially since I didn't even get a phone through them...
I was considering $30 a month plan, problem is... I also free lance, at times I use a phone a lot while on the go and VoIP is too unreliable for that in this area. There are spots with very poor T-Mobile data coverage here. So I'm stuck with either unlimited +5gb, or unlimited + contract.

Do u really need unlimited??? On average I use about 1 GB. And a while back when I tried to use as much data as a I can...I only maxed at out about 3 GB. (Bascially Pandora every time I listen to music...which is about 2-3 hours a day total???)

I've had my Nexus 4 for about a day and I've already racked up about 1GB pretty easily. I'd recommend one of their value plans. For 69.99 you get truly unlimited, no 5GB throttle point. They require a 2 year contract but if you're sticking with T-Mobile for a while that doesn't really matter. Canceling the contract early is $200 ETF. Without it you'd spend $89.99 for the same plan, so it seems pretty worth it to me. Attached a screenshot of my 1 day usage...

Was only maybe a bit over an hour of Twitch (720p stream) while in the car and about 30 minutes tethering while I VPN'd into work on the go. OP had already stated he used a lot of data and is likely to hit the 5GB cap. So while you say "most people", the OP is not most people.
Since many people seem to have a grandfathered unlimited data plan with Verizon, I thought you might want to be aware of this. Might force me to activate my Project Fi account now.

I dropped mine a long time ago and went to Sprint. Sadly, I was only using about 1GB a month even when I did have it. They've been great for me and cut my bill by half (even before they ran that promotion), so I'm happy.
To anyone considering a switch, Sprint is raising their unlimited rate mid-month, so it would be worth moving quick.
That really sucks. Here's a little more on who it affects:
http://www.droid-life.com/2015/10/0...price-hike-more-details-about-who-it-impacts/
Down at the bottom, it sounds like you might not be charged if you have a really old plan that doesn't break out the data separately. I think my old Shared 700 plan has separate data, so I'm probably screwed. I chatted with Verizon, who said nothing was going to change because they haven't officially announced anything yet. Morons.
Been seriously considering Project Fi anyhow, so that's the way I'll go. It'll probably cut my monthly bill in half. I normally don't use much of my unlimited data anyhow.
SIMPLE Mobile cost only $55 for 10GB LTE data.
So how the hell were us 1% the top 5% that needed to be throttled last year?
even at $90 it's still cheaper than any other plan form. plus now i'll be using netflix and google music more often with it instead of my wifi drive since they're charging more.
Love my $55 cricket with 20/ gb
I'm still keeping mine. I'm turning my wifi off permanently tho...

Is the Nexus 6 the best device on Verizon that can be rooted and use custom roms? Currently have a Note 4, and just utterly sick of its lag and lack of ability to do a damn thing I want. I need root back, but seems like every phone these days is unbreakable.
What about the Nexus 6P? Is that coming to vzw under contract discount upgrades?
I don't think it's possible to get on contract with Verizon anymore. There was an article about 3 months ago stating vzw had done away with contracts. It was at the same time they went to this s/m/l/xl data scheme.
I guess I lucked out. I have unlimited data and signed a new 2yr back in may. So like most everybody else, until then WiFi is a thing of the past and I'm just going to do everything on mobile until contract is up.
I think I'll make a nice 5gb file and put on Google drive and just constantly redownload it. See how high I can rack up my mobile data usage until then

You still can. Just have to select 2 year contract instead of device payment plan or purchase outright. May only be for current customers with available upgrades though.
the terms of the contract don't expire after two years, it's just the particular term of not leaving expires after two years. i wish i had kept my original contract so i could look it over. so you still have a contract with them, it's just the penalty for leaving that's expired, not the contract.
If you have a Nexus 6, you should probably check out T-Mobile. I left Verizon a few years back and I consistently have better signal in hospitals than people with Verizon. The Nexus has the best antenna and in my experience more than makes up for any minor differences between the companies. Plus I saved a couple hundred a month so I'm happy.

I'm glad I switched to Tmo when they were offering 2 lines unlimited data for 100$

The 6P will not be available through VZW for contract subsidized upgrades as far as I know. Please also remember that you cannot directly renew your UDP contract through verizon, they will force a new data plan on your line.
I'll just stick with my 100 buck 2 line family unlimited with sprint.
I simply canceled my home internet, raise my rate, that's cool... I'll raise my usage.
A quick note though I work for vzw (shameless plug) is that you will now be able to upgrade and keep your unlimite

from what i read it's not upgrade, but allow us to get on the payment plan to fully purchase a phone. i'd be better off using a credit card since i get a built in extended warranty on purchases. i never buy the TEP b/c it's not worth it for me.
How does everyone feel about no contracts, hope i get to keep my unlimited data
This isn't happening. All current customers will still be able to get 2 year contracts. You can still get them on Verizon and AT&T also for current subscribers. They just don't advertise that.

I have Sprint and was going to upgrade a member on my family plan a few weeks back and only saw two options.
Lease or Full Price
Is it an in store option?
I just read a article that 2yr are done , hope they let us get grandfathered unlimited data
They have said it was done for a while but best buy still let's them choose two year and if you talk to the right people on the phone or in store you can too. As is typical half the people that work for sprint have no clue.

Reactive basis for upgrades means if you want a freaking 2 year contract you can still get it. You might just have to complain a bit. New people or new lines however will not be able to do so.

For me my old plan and corporate discount make a two year contract cheaper over the 2 year period over any other option. If I lease they force me to change my plan to a plan where corporate discount only is discounted off the data portion of the bill rather than the full cost of the primary line. Would be a huge monthly cost increase to me. So 2 year contracts for me are the way to go until they make lease/easy pay the same cost wise to me.

The only real reson I still have sprint is because of the contracts and the unlimited data. If that is gone i will be too.
With so many options these days there are many much cheaper even though the phones aren't mainstream. Honestly i use my phone to talk, email, browse the internet, and play coc every now and then.
I can buy a nice laptop for the price of the phones now so it is unappealing.
I will likely get one of the cheaper options once the contracts are up.

It's a myth but don't look at them advertising 2 year contracts anymore and look for sprint customer service to try to move you off your old plans and take a lease. Don't fall for it. Once you go to a new plan you will never be able to go back or get a 2 year contract.

I left 2yr contracts for the framily plan which has been gone for a while now but I like that I can get a new phone every year! Not letting that go for anything.

Agreed talked to sprint last night and they tried get me off the 2 yr contract and lose my unlimited data, told them i would switch and now they said they would honor my 2 yr contract and discount my upgrade phone. If i switich to no contract my bill would of went up 70 bucs with a less data, so dont fall for their bs
On top of that i would have to pay full price for the phone, screw that, id rather pay 199 for upgrade phone and stay on my current plan
If you can still upgrade, you'll get intermittently throttled over 23gb
For anybody worried about still being able to get the upgrade on a grandfathered plan, you should read below. If you use 23gb or more per month, and worried about keeping an unlimited plan. I wouldn't suggest upgrading.
newsroom.sprint.com/blogs/sprint-perspectives/protecting-the-97.htm
"As we continue to improve our network, and as data usage across the industry continues to skyrocket, we’re always looking at ways to better manage our network resources and improve the customer experience.
One way we aim to make the customer experience better is to protect against the possibility that a small minority of customers might occupy an unreasonable share of network resources. With that in mind, we are introducing a new Quality of Service (QoS) practice that applies to customers who choose an unlimited data handset plan launched Oct. 16, 2015, or after, or customers who choose to upgrade their handset on or after Oct. 16 and remain on an existing unlimited data plan. For these customers, if they use more than 23GB of data during a billing cycle, they will be prioritized on the network below other customers for the remainder of their billing cycle, only in times and locations where the network is constrained. (These customers will still be able to use unlimited amounts of data without the worry of overage charges.)
This QoS practice is intended to protect against a small minority of unlimited customers who use high volumes of data and unreasonably take-up network resources during times when the network is constrained. It’s important to note that this QoS technique operates in real-time and only applies if a cell site is constrained. Prioritization is applied or removed every 20 milliseconds. And performance for the affected customer returns to normal as soon as traffic on the cell site also returns to normal, or the customer moves to a non-constrained site."
Lol considering I'm roaming as often as I'm in network...

23GB is crazy per line. I think I use maybe 7-9 on my line and my wife uses maybe 3-5 a month.
Sent from my SM-N910P using Tapatalk
23gb isn't that crazy if you're ever away from wifi and stream netflix, amazon prime, youtube, etc. 23gb comes quick if you do any streaming on the network. Regardless, I've had my unlimited plan for 10+ years. I've dealt with horrible service and waited for the network to get better. Now that the network is good, Sprint doesn't care about they're loyal customers. It's not that big of a surprise, but still unfortunate.

I used 16gb last month, but that's only because 2 of my buddy's at work have been piggybacking my network for Pandora via my free WiFi hotspot. ? They have Verizon with only 2gb of data per month.
If you have any of the old framily plans hold on to that with your lives went in to upgrade the wife's phone they like we can move you to a new plan and save you 30 bucks a month . Kicker is they took the one up off my plan and now stuck at every 2 years for a phone and paying full price which is robbery

As of August 31, 2016, VZW customers grandfathered into the unlimited data plan will no longer be able to go over 100 gigabytes monthly. Your line will be disconnected and VZW will give you 50 days for you to switch to a tiered plan. Hope the FCC can do something about this. What's the point of having unlimited data if we can't go over 100gb? There has to be a contractual limitation with what Verizon has planned for us unlimited users... I don't have internet service so I just use my hotspot. If this goes into effect, I'll be switching to AT&T after being loyal to Verizon for 11 years.

A lot of people with a regular ISP don't even hit 100GB of usage in a month.
Using Verizon as your ISP for all of your devices at home and abroad isn't what tethering is intended for (even if it's technically allowed), but Verizon is looking the other way. However, piling on top of that the fact that you're spiking way into the top couple percent of data users on the network, and Verizon's stance seems pretty justified.
Bottom line: If you're going to use Verizon as your sole ISP, don't also compound it by being at the top end of data consumers.
whats the definition of unlimited? They should have never of offered Unlimited if they couldn't see the potential for high usage as their customers did... But nope they don't care and will continue to chip away at us loyal customers. I hate Verizon but I'm stuck with them because At&t got rid of their unlimited plans as well. I'm just waiting for them to get away with the same tiered **** at home. Comcast is piloting a program to charge by tier for your home internet congrats we let them get away with it on our mobile and now they are pushing for the home internet too.

Also its 100GB now... but soon it will be 50GB than 25GB until they weed us all out of unlimited data because "we are congesting their network" Won't we still be congesting their network on the tiered 100GB plan? its all about money and if you don't see that you are part of the problem because you are complacent and think will I don't use 100GB so it doesn't matter to me.

I think Verizon was generous to grandfather the unlimited plan for as long as they did... and I don't usually have anything nice to say about Verizon.
Thank you for pointing this out! This SERIOUSLY sucks! I travel a lot and REALLY depend on the tether for both business and pleasure. Its really my only option. The true unlimited was nice because I NEVER had to worry about watching what my usage was. Was just looking back to my May-16 bill and they have me at 156gb, interestingly since then its been 92-98Gb. I might be able to work with 100gb cap buy anything lass then that and Ill be gone in a heartbeat from Verizon. The GF has Straight talk and that works just as good for half the price, just pray you never have to call their customer service!
Like the song on Avenue Q goes, the internet is for porn. If your needs are 24/7 that limit to unlimited could throttle your lifestyle!

Now i get this Ad in MyVerizon that says popdata unlimited streaming for $2 for 30 minutes or $3 for a hour.
I never had unlimited with Verizon but this sounds like instead of buying public wifi somewhere, probably cheaper
crap. I just checked and I am at 80GB with 14 days left. I better slow down
Well this is terrible news, I had no idea. We have 3 line still grandfathered. My mother is the biggest user, since she doesn't have home internet. This could end up causing us to finally change service....Nothing spectacular to switch to, I guess Sprint?

Just get your lines under contract and you are good. Sell the phone.
I just sold a Pixel for $680 on Swappa, and locked my $29.99 UDP in for another 2 years.
@Telemachus how do you renew your contact without losing the unlimited data? I remember when I got my note 4 originally there was the best buy method, but how do you do it now?
Thanks in advance

that method no longer works, but using best buy still works. i did this for my wife's line.
I upgraded my wifes line but the phone I got never once was used on my wifes line. My dad had the same exact phone I upgraded, so they swapped phones and still have unlimited data on 2 year deal. And the phone my dad is using can NEVER be used on my wifes line or she will lose it.
Even easier... sell the phone and never worry about it.

ewww ATT, At least go GoogleFi. Even with limited phones you will get monthly security updates.
But this is also bull ****. Some people live out in rural areas, some of my friends for instance in the middle of Kansas. Where satelite is $300+ for 1.2mbps down. They just use their 3g Hotspots.
This had to be a troll, my account has used 400-500gb and no email, phone call or warning of any kind and still unlimited.

Thanks for the tip. I average about 90GB a month on my phone, last time I hit over 100gb was back in July. I travel a lot (I work in SAP) and hook up to VPN for work so I use 4 GB a day just transferring files back and forth. I find hotel free wifi sucks. I use Slingbox as well and that sucks up data as well.
Droid life states "a source told us that Verizon has announced internally that an unlimited data user who uses an “extraordinary” amount of data is someone who uses 200GB of data per month."
http://www.droid-life.com/2017/01/06/verizon-upgrade-fee-increase-contracts-unlimited-data/
Well according to tech and corporate if you pay for tethering and you accepted the extra charge you are OK if you don't pay for tethering, in other words if you are not paying between $70 and $80 a month, you can expect to receive contact from them. Per line every month that is.
