Is there any reg hack, cab, tweak, etc that would allow me to better control new email notifications without installing a third party app? I already tried something called Mail Notify (or something like that) but thought it was overkill for what I was trying to do.
Here is why I ask.
I have my work email through push mail and my personal gmail account set up on my phone. I only want to be notified when I have mail in my gmail account and not my work email. I literally get hundreds of msgs and automated reports emailed to my work account day and night and as a result, the new mail icon is constantly appearing on the top bar. I acknolwedge the new msgs and within a minute or two the icon is back. This is very annoying, since I can't tell when I get a personal email to my gmail account by just looking at the top bar.
If there isn't a way to do what I'm looking for above, is there a way atleast to turn off that new mail icon permanently. I already went to the Notification settings and turned off everything under "Messaging: New e-mail message".
Thanks for looking.
BTW, I have a T-Mobile HD2 runing NRG's GTX themed ROM incase that matters.
Try this app, haven't used it but it might work for you:

Thanks for responding. I'm looking for a reg edit or hack moreso than for a 3rd party app. Problem with 3rd party apps is that the need to be configured and constantly running in the background to work.
The app is finally done and in the Market (1x1 Ultimate Unread Widget), and supports many more features than I expected when it started Thanks for all the input everyone! Here's the release with more screenshots/features, etc: http://nowsci.com/ultimateunreadwidget
Features Include:
Support for Vanilla E-mail Client
Support for HTC E-mail Client
Support for MotoBlur E-mail Client
Multi-folder select
Allows for multiple instances of the widget with different folder settings for each
Saves battery by only updating when the screen is turned on
Changelog:
v07
Fixed a large scale permissions issue causing the application to not find accounts or update unread counts
Now works in most new ROMs, including custom ROMs such as CyanogenMod7
v05 - v06
Internal Code Enhancements
v04
MotoBlur Email Support
v03
HTC Sense Support
Stock Android Email Support

Hey Everyone,
I'm about to release this into the Market, but wanted some preliminary input. I've noticed a lot of people in forums requesting a 1x1 unread e-mail widget for those running HTC Sense and the included mail application. I've completed a widget that does this, though unfortunately it requires Root because it must open some of the HTC Sense databases. It shows a compiled total of all unread mail in all inboxes. When clicked, it opens the HTC Mail reader to it's last state.
[[ To be clear, this works with ALL E-mail accounts, Exchange, POP, IMAP, etc. Not just GMail like many of the other widgets out there now. ]]
I was originally planning to make the widget support a single inbox at a time, so you could run a different instance of the widget with a different icon for each of your mail accounts, but after going through the HTC dex files, I'm not sure how I could have it call up a specific mail account when clicked on.
Also, I've yet to determine how HTC signals their own widget to update the counts. Until I figure that out, it currently updates whenever the screen is turned on.
Thoughts, input, suggestions?
Thanks.
I've actually created a version to work with the stock email reader as well.
I currently have an "Gmail Unread Count" or something widget on Sense which does exactly this, very customizable (choose what icon etc) and I don't have root access.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but this only grabs the "Gmail" unread counts, not other accounts you're syncing through the phone, right?

Mind if I test it ?
I would be interested in this too.
Any chance you could also add an option to only make it count unread mail for a certain label. And then have multiple instances of the widget so it's easy to monitor said labels.
Would happily test and pay for it as it is a feature many people have been yearning for.

This is a great idea. I'll look into this. Thanks!
Testing shouldn't be necessary, I've got a few different phones I'm trying it out on. I'll throw it up in the market soon, and put a post here when it's there.
You're a star! Thanks so much

@Fmstrat
that qould be great. I'm also very interested in this widget
Will this be available on additional launchers instead of just Sense? I am using an Evo but have Launcher Pro as my default home. I do miss the count on the Sense widget, but not enough to switch back.

Does Launcher Pro have it's own email client? This Widget is based specifically on the client. For instance, I'm running Sense, but have installed the stock vanilla 2.2 email client through an APK. I then run the Vanilla version of the widget for the stock email client, OR I can run the Sense version for the HTC client.
Thanks.

Yup, just responded. Thanks.
Also very interested in this. Have found that Androids lack of good email widgets and apps to be very disappointing. Gmail Unread Count is good but is very tempremental about how many accounts it can handle. Cuurentlt I'm rocking 3 Gmail accounts & a MS Exchange account. This app would be greatly appreciated

How do you have them all set up? 1 in the Gmail app, 2 in IMAP? All in one? etc. I may want you to do a test run for me before I release if you don't mind, as that's a pretty extreme case.
Thanks!

Yeah.
Gmail Unread App - use this for my main personal Gmail account
HTC Stock Email App - use this for the other 2 Gmail accounts (1 business / 1 forums/eBay) + my current MS Exchange account
It's cumbersome to say the least. The HTC Stock Email app is okay but to be honest it's slow, not very user-friendly & looks crap. I thought I might be able to split the accounts easily with Gmail Unread app but I find that really is very difficult to add an 2nd account not to mind a 3rd. Sometimes it'll work but more often than not - it won't.

Unfortunately root is required for this widget to read HTC's mail database. If you're willing to root, I haven't had a Sense 2.1 tester yet.
Thanks.
I just wanted to give everyone an update since it's been a while (I was traveling last week, and will be again next week). I'm applying for the Market and adding in code for Licensing and Versioning now. The widget will be released very soon after that, and has been renamed 1x1 Ultimate Unread Widget. I will post again with a market link when it's out.
If there are any other mail readers people would like added for phase 2, such as K9, or any other features, such as icon switching, or changing the update frequency, let me know. The more requests (public, no PM please) for an item, the higher I will place it in the list.
Thanks again for the interest.
hello guys
from the very first day my phone doesnt give any visual (!) sign when i have a new mail on my gmail account.
on the sgs 1 , when i had a new mail the gmail ap the envelope pic - on the dock turn on red or (if i choose to..) had a exclamation mark - and the sign didnt disappear until the opening of the new mail.
on the sgs2 i have only sound notifi and no vissual.
i guess thats the reason y even on my widget locker (i have gmail as one of my custom slider...) i dont c any notification when i have new mail.

Are you using ADW notifier to display notification counters ? I am using Widget Locker together with ADW Notifier and the only counters i can see on the sliders are the ones for sms. Can't get it to show counters for calls and gmail. If anyone encountered this problem and found a fix or can tell me the exact setting they used i'd appreciate it. @ rastamit I also registered for samsung social hub, and both the samsung e-mail and social hub icons display the counters for gmail, but the gmail icon doesn't. Maybe that's your problem.
hi. i dont have ADW notifier. but i fixed the problem by d.l. "gmail notifier" app. i deleted my gmail app and replaced it with the gmail notifier app. tnx u all/
another solution is the "NoLed" app, works like a charm
Hi All,
Got my Nexus 7 in Dublin Airport T2 Dixons yesterday with no queues, fuss or drama, no pre orders to worry about, just walked up and paid... love it so far however one little issue i have.
Adding the Gmail widget is fine. Inbox emails show all is good in the world. If I put it to sleep and then open after a few mins the emails in the widget do not show... just blank!!!!! any ideas. The gmail account is fine and all emails in here but the widget just seems faulty.
Thanks
Darren
I use that widget with no problems at all,are you using the stock launcher?

Just tried it on mine and when adding the widget, it prompts which label (or folder, e.g. Inbox, sent, etc.). I picked Inbox and like yourself nothing showed up although I have 3 read emails in my Inbox. So I flagged one as unread again and removed and re-added the widget and hey presto all 3 emails show. Now when I actually read the email the 3 emails still show, all greyed out as read. Looks like a little bug in the code to me ?
Same issue on new Nexus 7

I don't have this issue under 4.1.2 on my Galaxy Note 2 but I can reproduce it under CyanogenMod 4.2.2 on a Galaxy Nexus and on my brand new 2nd Gen Nexus 7. When I add the widget it works fine. Go to sleep and it turns blank.
I've got the same issue in motorola RAZR M and samsung S4. The problem is that for some reason the gmail force closes in the background (i see a error) and then the widget goes blank. I use apex launcher and no task killer apart from swiping away the apps using default app switcher.
Hello. Please, when i double click in gmail notification in aod, i read email but if i reopen app, the email is yet unreaded. When i delete a email from gmail app, random sync with gmail web page... Is this a known bug??? I repaet, random, not always and i din't understand why... Can anyome help me? Thanks
Nobody uses Gmail???
This is not a problem with the S8 but with Android Nougat. Its also not only Gmail related its all notifications on nougat are broken The best way to get SOME notifications back is to go to settings/apps/hamburger menu/special access/optimize battery usage/ and uncheck EVERYTHING. Next step is to (with root) use the app "Root- Push Notification Fixer" and set intervals to lowest possible settings. You will still not get all of them but at least you will get some of them..
Another fix is to install nova launcher and teslaunread to show bubbles on your icons when you have new notifications for that app. I have mine setup for about 7 apps and I ALWAYS get the bubble hours or days before a notification ever comes in (if they ever do).
In order to fix the issue specifically with gmail I use a different email app. I use aquamail, but there are a few good ones out there. I don't have notification or synching issues. I don't use the email on the phone a lot, a few times a day. I found a great improvement over using gmail.
