[Q] /storage/emulated/0 not accessible - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I would appreciate some help with the following issue:
After upgrading android to 4.4.2, the directory /storage/emulated/0 became inaccessible to the apps using it, such as GO Contacts EX (export contacts), viber and sms backups, among many. Whenever I can set the directory to the external SD card I am able to make backups, but not otherwise. The phone is rooted, and if using root explorer I can browse this directory and permissions on it appears to be fine (on storage and emulated the are rwxr-x--x, on 0rwxrwx--x)
Please advise how to resolve this issue.
Thanks,

Thanks for getting back to me. Unfortunately this did not fix the issue. I tried also to change the configuration of the permissions.xml as discussed in other topics, but that did not help either.
I would appreciate any other ideas on the topic.

1. IF you are able to access the card with explorer (NOT root explorer)
2. IF the installed apps cannot access it
THEN I'd check the name of card, if its mounting point changed etc. In that case, reinstallation of app could potentially sort out the issue.

Thanks again for the suggestions. One thing that apparently I am not clear is whether this directory is part of the internal memory. So far I thought it was, and it was emulating external storage, while being an internal memory. Otherwise I can access it, and reinstalling an app did not help - the issue still persists in its original state. Also, I tried changing the permissions of the directories with root explorer to rwxrwxrwx, and I was able for the /storage and /storage/emulated, but not for /storage/emulated/0, where I got an error message that the operation failed.
I would gladly do a backup and revert back to 4.3, but I cannot do backups of anything, mostly I care about my viber and whatsapp messages (they also fail to create backups).
Thanks,

Beside other things, you cannot return back because of different bootloader. since you are with 4.4.2, you are with 4.4.2 or HIGHER. Period.

I see, so I am stuck with the 4.4.2, which is too bad but it is what it is. I guess it is a hard reset without a backup then, and if that doesn't work, off the phone goes to the garbage...

Did you not get su prompt to disable Knox when first rooted. I did and I have read/write access to both internal and external SD card.
Also froze all Knox related apps with TB.

Hard reset and installation of CM 10.2 based on android 4.3 resolved the issue. After this I would advise noone to upgrade to 4.4.
Thanks to everyone who helped with the issue.

Deleted "accounts and sync" in my settings

After I rooted my vibrant to get lag fix, I decided to get titanium backup to remove some bloatware. Like the IDIOT I am I deleted the accounts and sync. I can turn sync on with my stock android widget so my calendar and emails sync. But it has been erased from my settings, and force closes every time I try to open it. Can anyone help me!! PLEASE!!!
I think this is what i'm missing
I need to get this " com.android.providers.subcribedfeeds " when I look in my system/app folder I still see the account and sync still there even though I used titanium backup to remove it. Then when I look in setting/manage application "com.android.providers.subcribedfeeds " is there ready to be unistalled. This was never there before and it has a size of " 0kb "
http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?r1mrbtsep2k84kb
Figure out how to push it to /system/apps on your own (hint: use: ADB or Root Explorer). I uploaded this a while back.
XDA is the best
Thank you so much i used root explorer and it works as good as new. This place is the best.
Edit: got the zip opened on my computer and got the sets of files but when I tendered then from sd card to system/apps using root explorer, the files vanish and don't show up anywhere not even the sd card
I too made the same mistake by deleting the file. I downloaded the file from the link onto my phone but when I extract the .zip file using root explorer there's nothing in it
sorry tobring an old thread up..
so i goofed up and deleted acct and sync as well.. does this prevent my phone from mounting up via USB. i cant seem to mount it at all now...
any help is appreciated.

i did. problem is i cant DL root explorer since i cannot connect to the market due to acct and sync unable to perform its function.
i've got the zip for media share. i was wondering if there's a short cut to just mount the phone and drag the files over?

[INSTALL_FAILED_DEXOPT]
any ideas?
I think I did the same thing
I just so noticed that on titanium backup that this was deleted with out a backup. I do not remember deleting this but I guess I did. I am unable to get to access accounts and synchronization on settings. In every other respects my phone works just fine
Here is what I did to trouble shoot, I did not use adb, every time I attempt to set it up I never get it right. I did however get an apk from a Samsung Galaxy sII dump on this forum. I used root explorer to copy it into the system/apps folder I gave it the right permissions and restarted my phone. I still do not have this option in TB nor in setting. I am able to get notification via yahoo mail client however. I just would really like to get this back if possible.
I am not sure if this helps but I have a Samsung Galaxy Exhibit II 4g. Sad to say there is no Nandroid or CWM so that is out of the question...

App backup question

I bought a game from gameloft, and I found out that going to have to wipe/reinstall my phone. If I move the app to my SD card, will the game still work after I wipe my phone? I realize this is an out there case, but I contacted their customer support and I haven't heard back from them yet. Thanks in advance for any help.
Also, would titanium backup work for me for this? Would I need the paid version? The game did not come from the market, but I'm only worried about keeping this one app. Everything else I can get through the market again.

If you back up the application to your SD card, as long as you enable unknown sources, you should be able to re-install it without a problem.

Thanks. That's what I was hoping. I may try to find my old G1 and see if it runs there. Or at least shows up. I just needed some confirmation.
I believe this option is to back up your app 'data' only, not the actual app.
With Titanium Backup you can backup the app and data. The backup file will end with extension 'apk.gz'. Use a file manager to 'extract' the .apk file; I use 'ES File Explorer'.

How to back-up unrooted device?

Hey guys, I'm trying to root my Desire HD with AAHK.
The problem is, it says that I'll need to downgrade and downgrading will wipe my data.
Now I don't have a problem with downgrading, but I'd like to keep my data.
So I was wondering WHAT data will it wipe and how do I back-up?
I have titanium back-up installed but it needs root access, so that won't work.
I've copied all the files on my SD card to my laptop, to keep my images and stuff...
Is there a way to back-up other important files (if there are any?) before rooting?
Thanks in advance!

Consider purchasing Titanium Backup. It just started letting you backup app data WITHOUT root using ADB. See: http://www.androidpolice.com/2012/0...-adb-backups-without-root-other-improvements/. It will also very much come in handy once you are rooted.

Ooh, good to know. I hadn't tried it; I just saw the bit about ADB backup.
Files and documents are stored on your SD, just copy that out.
What you do lose are all your apps, app data, accounts, desktop layout, etc. If you use a custom launcher (go, adw), then chances are the app supports backup. It's like having a factory reset, or like when you first got your phone. Nothing on it. the SD card isn't effected though. There's a small chance rooting will corrupt your SD card. You can always format it to make it working again, but you loose all your data.
I use a program called Android Commander. Allowing inter alia copies of APK's. So, I have created a folder on my SD with programs and then use a clean reinstall of the rom, added applications. So just lose data and accounts.
App manager pro, download it from play store, and backup all your app's

Try to use MyBackup Pro or Safe Backup. But anyway, you should know, data loss while rooting is inevitably. For example, your settings for email accounts, desktop layout and other data, stored inside system memory will be lost. Using semi-backup application (without root) will save for you all important information (SMS, Calls log, Contacts and Applications). I think there's no problem with downgrading and losing system data. After rooting process and installing a custom rom you will be able to restore your settings by manual assignment - this is very easy

Thanks. I just checked out the sticky on here for the new root method http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2387577
Will that keep all my data?
Also I'm on AT&Ts latest MF3 build. If that makes a difference. Sorry this is the first time I have every tried rooting a phone.
Dude.. if you already find the correct thread. Why don't you ask there. I guess it will not wipe your data. At least on mine it didn't but I my contacts are stored on my gmail account. So my best advice is ask on the thread..
Samsung SGH-I337 on Tapatalk
This doesn't format your ROM it uses your sdcard to install root So you will have to wipe your sdcard. So any pictures or other items on it you will loose when you format it.

And why are you rooting?
Can I Root without "Wipe," to recover accidentally deleted photos?
I'm on NC1.
I need to "Root" without wiping the Internal Memory.
I was using Internal Memory for photos and in a state of stupor (I assume), deleted a folder I thought I moved to my PC.
So the files are now deleted. I want to use one of the many recovery tools but thus far, all that I can find require "Root" access.
BTW: As an aside, does anyone else experience issues with copying too/from Internal Memory to a PC and the files seemingly go, or at least them are visible in Explorer, but then after disconnecting the phone, when you look for them, they are not there?

[Q] SDFix on S5 suddenly stopped working.

Hi
I'm running a rooted Samsung S5 (SM-900F) with the SDFix ( https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=nextapp.sdfix).
Today it suddenly wouldn't allow me to move files from the internal memory to my SD-card or from one folder on the SD-card to another folder on the SD-card. I tried re-fixing it with the SD-fix app, but the app tells me it's already fixed. I use QuickPic as a gallery and Solid Explorer as a file explorer. These have worked flawlessly since the S5 was released, now they don't.
Any idea on how to fix this? I'm so pissed off at Google for even implementing this idiotic restriction!

Well the obvious way would be to revert to a backup from yesterday or a few days ago when it was working fine. Easy peasy. done.
But as you haven't done that.. I can only assume that you don't make backups, which is very bad. Everyone should make backups. If you had a backup your issue would already be solved.
Moving on, what has changed? Did you accept any OTA updates, what was the last program you installed? If the problem started at the same time, try uninstalling that program temporarily.
Check the properties in platform..xml to see if your SD card permissions are intact. Wipe the cache partition from recovery mode, and wipe your file explorer and photo viewer cache and data from the settings menu applications manager for those two apps. If the problem persists, then try reinstalling your file explorer.
