I tried to add a new IPSec VPN profile today and after saving the preshared key I was prompted to enter the Credential Storage password, which I have never setup. Anything I enter fails; I can keep trying indefinitely and it never prompts to reset credential storage.
Looking in Settings > Security > Credential Storage shows Storage type is "Backup to hardware" and not changeable and Clear credentials is also grayed out.
Why can't I create local credential storage secured by my own password with this device?
EDIT: So I found the workaround, but not really an answer to the credential storage issue:
http://www.pocketables.com/2014/02/fix-credential-storage-roadblock-android.html
Essentially, Credential Storage forces you to use PIN or Password unlock options only, but you must disable all unlock options first and run something that requests credential storage to enable it. If you set PIN or Password unlock yourself and try to enable credential storage in VPN it will fail. Thankfully I don't need to use VPN from device really so i can go back to Fingerprint unlock, but hopefully this helps someone else in the future.
I've tried it repeatedly, all with same results. Not sure how to resolve it yet

By the way, I brought this issue to both Samsung and Verizon support and their only answers were to perform a factory reset.
Lesson learned: I'm better at supporting my device than the manufacturer and carrier combined.

Can anyone tell me:
What is the default Credential storage password.
What happens if you run out of attempts to unlock the Credential storage.
When the phone is rooted will it change, disappear, or remain the same.
I'm cautious

nothin will chnage it will just reset if enetered too much times and yes it works
What is this used for, anyway??
i have no idea. But it only asks me for this password when I try to connect to enterprise networks
I think, like the name suggests, it is a keyword that is used to store a set of passwords with. The only place I have encountered this credential storage password is, as mentioned above, while trying to connect to enterprise networks
I have had my Nexus 10 for about 2 months now, and I have always had the PIN options for unlocking the tablet. However, I am now trying to get rid of security but when I go into security under setting, I am unable to select:
None
Slide
Face Unlock
All three are grayed out and it says "Disabled by administrator, encryption policy, or credential storage". I've been looking around settings and can find no way to fix this. I have no trouble picking the other three options, pattern, PIN or password, but and have no idea why those 3 are grayed out.

Probably because you use either a certificated WiFi connection, VPN or a similar connection you had to setup first. Some connections require a PW to bet set to ensure authentification

It says no available device administrators. How do I change that?

You don't want device administrators. aritrea's post is likely the answer to your question.
There's this issue that's really bothering me. When I create a VPN connection system asks me to create a code (pattern, pin or password). Then, lockscreen requires my code to unlock, and it doesn't allow me to change lock back to none because, it says, it's protected under a credential storage.
If I clear my credential storage it clears my saved connections.
Now I found an app that disables lockscreen without deleting the credentials, now even though "none", "slide" and "face unlock" are greyed out, option is set to none. Too bad I want "slide", not "none". But in this case should be simpler..
My credentials storage is in a funk.
Even after doing a "clear credentials" it does not reset the credentials password, which I never set. I did at one time set a screen pin unlock which I could use as the credentials storage password, but switching back to pattern unlock, I cannot reset or clear the password. I can't import certificates as it's asking me for a password I don't have.
I have also tried setting the screen unlock back to none, which should force the storage password to reset but it does not, it just keeps asking me for the password.
This. Same problem here. [fullrage]
On my Sprint LG G2, the option to select the screen lock setting of "Knock Code" is disabled/grayed out with the following message:
Disabled by administrator, encryption policy, or credential storage
(the options to select "None", "Swipe", and "Face Unlock" are also disabled/grayed out)
Any way to figure out what is causing this, and to correct it?
Thanks!

Two options come to mind:
Is your device encrypted?
Do you have maybe a connection to a corporate Exchange server? That may be adding device policies.
go to setting - security - certificates management - clear credentials
