[Q] why are S5 ROMs so big? - Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm coming form flashing the Galaxy S, and the HTC Sensation, and I am used to even custom ROMs being between 80Mb and 200MB.
Why are all of the ROMs for the S5 so big? They are a magnitude bigger, not just a little bit, so can anyone give me a summary of why?

Thats true bro
Same prob.

Samsung includes lots of extra features and software compared to other brands. Especially on flagship phones...
This means increased rom size. If these weren't included then the rom size would probably be halved in size.

Is that all it is? The sizes seem to be more like 8-10x the size.
Although if I adjust for Gapps, I guess that brings it to 5-6x the size.
The new S5 ROMs are still MUCH bigger than for the Samsung Galaxy S or HTC Sensation.

Coming from HTC devices I understood bloat and there's always extra carrier bloat in U.S. but Samsung takes it to a new level there is so much bloat in these TW roms it's like every "feature" gets it own apk lol.. 310+ stock system apks in my Sprint 900P

The total size of the 1080p wallpapers on the s5 probably exceeds 80mb

Because Touchwiz and Samsung applications.
I chucked a bit when I saw a "light touchwiz rom" on these forums that was like 630mb. It had most of the new Touchwiz functions taken out too.
EDIT: It is now 550mb

Samsung on Homescreen Redraw..

My screen re-draws a lot.
I phone Samsung support to see if they have a fix in place. My call was escalated to 2nd tier support. I was told that TouchWiz is thrown out of the RAM as there is insufficient RAM to function the device and keep TW in memory, No revelation there.
I said I never had this with this S2. I was told that the S3 has been designed differently to the S2. The S3 loads as much as it can into the RAM so apps open quicker and this won't change in the future JB builds.
Nothing revolutionary here on the subject, but Samsung are aware of the redraw and its designed to work this way,
Personally, I'd rather wait an extra 0.5 of a second for an app to load than have the redraws. what about you?

Yeah I agree I'd rather wait 0.5 of a second then have to wait 3-5 for a redraw. They should at least give us an option in Developer options.
Ideally all the S3's should have come with 1.5 or 2gb Ram.

Agreed. I did say that the phone is underpowered in the RAM area and it all went quite on the other end of the phone...
They suggested I keep an eye on how many web pages are open in the browser and keep a check on the apps running. Basically to manage the phone closer than before with the S2. Reminds me of the WM6.5 days.
I was told however, that my feedback will be passed on. So fingers crossed for the S4 then!?

You're right, but we are already aware of the re-draws and there's little (if anything we can do about it).
I guess if we stick with a less memory hogging launcher like Nova (or Trebuchet) will work but somehow it won't solve it, just hide it.
I'd rather have an app open instantly, though, but that's me.
I have noticed a lot less TW redraws on the JB leaks, in fact a grand total of 0 redraws, so I don't quite believe this "it will not change in JB" unless it's to do with the fact there is more usable RAM in the JB leaks.
Supercharge it 100% using v6supercharger. Patch services.jar and you will forget this issue forever. :good:
Just move on to CM10 already, faster and smoother and no redraws.
Got Sick of Redraws!!!!
S3 suppose to be a Samsung's Flagship phone....they can even sort out this issue.....i don't fancy flashing different ROMs as like TW & UI of stock rom.
Any suggestion on any ROM close to the Stock Rom with no home screen redraw? please

+1 that is my experience as well. ICS builds have 781 MB of usable RAM, JB leaks have 833 MB usable (according to the built-in task manager anyway). That seems to be just enough of a bump up in RAM to greatly alleviate the problem. I suspect the S3 will be the last of the 1 GB flagship phones from Samsung.

The choice of 1gb ram by Samsung on the i9300 was a very bad one. No doubt about it. Although I don't suffer launcher redraws as I use sslauncher, proper multitasking isn't possible due to low ram.
So now Samsung is releasing the i9305 with 4g, 2gb of ram and quad core. It will be available in Australia as of today.
There is now word that 2 of the major telcos here will be selling it alongside the i9300 until the i9300 stock runs out. After that only the i9305 will be sold.
So basically, only 3 or so months after its release the i9300 international will the old model here. And loyal customers who rushed to buy it will be stuck with a lesser phone. Not happy.

Hense the silence on the phone was deafening today when I mentioned this to a Samsung technical advisor. For weeks after this was released people were banging on about free RAM is wasted RAM. They were just trying to kid themselves. With all the new features of the i9300 and Samsungs desire to cache everything so it opened instantly it needs at least 2GB.... bummer.
Wanna buy a i9300?
More ram is higher battery drain i thought.
Simple solution : root and remove all things u dont need ( have a look at apps manager in settings), i have no redraw since then, stock kernel stock rom.

No TV Out as usual
Notification Led doesn't work for everything (Whatsapp)/Led is always white whilst phone is ringing (Changing the default Led colour doesn't stop this happening)
Switching to front camera is VERY SLOW (I hardly use it though so not bothered)
Last time I checked, Siyah kernel wasn't working with the new build so no Eargasm support (One of my main issues, DSP doesn't sound as good)
No touch to focus whilst video recording
Some people have camera issues when focusing and using led light (Haven't experienced it myself)
9 times out of 10 animations are smooth, then you'll have that one noticeable time where the window animation stutters
Apart from Eargasm and touch to focus whilst video recording, can't say I miss anything else. Definitely suitable for daily use. Haven't had any lock ups etc.

Nexus 4 Rom's vs TW and LG's UI

Hi, First of all I love pure stock and that Nexus gets all the updates first, and the Rom's our great Dev's create.
But with Nexus devices we only get ROM's that they all look the same Aosp,Aokp not counting the MiUi (which is the ugliest I have ever seen). Just look at the Galaxy Nexus Android development. They are all the same, and it gets boring.
With TW and LG or Sense we get mixture of Aosp CM Aokp mixture. Which means they have much more features mixed that Nexus will not get.
What you guy's think?
There was some sense and tw ROMs. If I'm correct they where really broken. There just wasn't much support no one wanted them. Making a ROM is a lot of work especially making a whole new ui work. If no one really wants it its pointless

I am pretty sure I will go stock with apex launcher.
Actually 4.1 and 4.2 are really great os with a good amount of useful features. I don't know if I really "need" a custom Rom. Root will fit for me ...
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda premium
The only thing I would want of these ROMs would be features and apps, like for example, the HTC or Samsung cameras that take 99 pictures at ~6 pictures per second, take pictures while filming and have TONs of features. Stock camera always sucked and it's not the 4.2 update that will change things.
Trust me, you don't want the full Sense, TouchWiz, etc.
They break the Holo experience, slow down the device, make incompatibilities with some apps, etc.

I will do what i normally do. Stock ROM (it will be fast enough anyway) and minimal applications. Makes it great for a balance of speed and battery life.
I hate all the Samsung applications and stuff like that which just slow down and drain battery on my Galaxy s3 and cm 10 is buggy as **** due to no support. Also the rom is themed like a kids playground and I have no idea why anyone would want a nature themed phone.
Anyway. Stock is how it is meant to be and the only real non-gimped option IMO.

[Q] moving from iphone 5 to S4

ive had the iphone 5 for a while and im interesting getting the S4. i still have my S2 but i dont use it anymore. im wondering what are the pros of switching over? and which version should i get (i9500 or i9505)
Well considering your in the UK, your better off getting the I9505, then I9500 is for selected countries only so you either have import or risk buying of ebay ect, plus is you want to root, use custom roms or the Google Edition rom then the I9505 is the way to go.
Now the downsides if you don't plan to root or do anything with your S4, apart from using it stock & i'm guessing you want a simfree one, is that Samsung is slow to update simfree user's with the latest updates in the UK, Networks get priority first, while simfree gotta wait weeks before getting same update.
I gotta admit iphone 5 a good smartphone, it does what it does and does it well if you know what i mean.
As for the Pro's well that depends on you, your S2 isn't all that far behind the S4 software wise so all you be getting really is better specs, much better screen & Camera & lots of added Samsung Bloat such as air view ect.
9505 because of Google S4 edition, you get plenty of roms to choose from... and 9500 is USA version only, but you can of course find some in UK if you dig deeper...

Agree atm i9505 is the best chice due to the google experience edition
ok thats one part sorted (i9505).
now i just need to find out why the S4 would be better than the iphone 5. pros and cons of both.
ive read a few review but ten people in the comments complain about false or biased review so im lost.

Depends what your use it for. Personally for me the camera is important as I'm a tattooist it saves taking an extra camera I upgraded from s2 just for that reason although I will mess about with rooting etc in time. I compared loads of phones before upgrading, inc iphone 5 and the s4 just come out top but its personal preference

well there are the two obvious differences - the screen (bigger and higher resolution) and the operating system (android).

The i9500 is a little faster than the i9505. However, the difference is so small and you can feel it only with benchmarks...
The i9505 is based on Qualcomm Snapdragron S600 CPU. This helps developpers to bring stable alternative ROMs for it. The i9500 is powered by a Samsung procesor, and its documentation is so poor...this is why we still don't have CyanogenMod for it. The i9505 is also LTE capable so you can have a better mobile internet speed connexion depending on where do you live...
Finally, a Google Play version, called i9505G, is available in US store and it has the same hardware than the i9505. We have already a lot of ports of the Google Edition on classic i9505 and it will probably helps developers to build new roms...:good:

I transitioned from IOS to Android myself with the S4 and found that the TouchWiz interface was counter-intuitive to the old IOS so I switched out the TouchWiz launcher for Go Launcher EX prime which gave a much better interface to use that was more akin to IOS.
Its very easy to root/swap roms & kernels etc so I'll give you the benefit of my experience:
The S4 has a big issue with charge / power. Its so powerful that it simply cant charge itself while your using it with anything less than 1000mA charge, this is most apparent in the car as a sat nav, or using the Samsung MHL out adapter for HDMI video on your TV. You can fix this easily by flashing a new kernel that support fast charge switching. I personally am using the Ktoonsez kernel.
The Samsung apps are all junk so to get rid of them grab a copy of wanamlites latest rom v1.4 and flash it using CWM. that will give you a stripped down, higher performing, latest version of the software with limited / no bugs.
The whole process takes about 20 minutes
Here is a guide to install CWM (do this first): http://androidtelegraph.com/guide-install-clockworkmod-cwm-recovery-on-samsung-galaxy-s4-gt-i9505/
Then install wanamlites rom: http://wanamlite.com/2013/07/18/wanamlite-xxubmga-v1-4-android-jb-4-2-2-clean-stable/
Then the Ktoonsez kernel if you need the fast charge switch http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2297379

Solution to a lagless device

I know I should have posted this in the q&a but maybe we could have a discussion on the matter.
So as we know, this phone is one of the lagless devices I've ever had and I've had quite a handful of phones recently so I wanted to know your opinions on what do you thunk may be the reason. I know HTC dedicated about a fourth of the ram to hardware and I think that helps a lot. Do you think it's that or just plain old optimization?
From the way I see it, I think it's a big help from the hardware ram but lots of credits due to optimization. What do you think, why do you think so, and what are your views on hardware marrying software?
It's down to both hardware and software optimization, looks like HTC's Sense 5 has been built from the ground up to work with the new processors and Android JellyBean. They've done a great job stripping down the unnecessary bloatware and complicated options. They have refined the software to a point that everything just snaps.
For the first time since Sense first got released, I actually prefer this to stock Android. Love Sense 5

I agreed. It's butter. Had a gs4 for almost 2 weeks can't never compare to the smoothness of the HTC one.

did not notice any lag on InsertCoin 3.0
HTC have done a solid job on Sense 5 but I also think it's down to not including a bunch of useless software (like on the S4) and sticking with the tried and tested 4.1.2. I hope 4.2.2 and above are just as non lagging and stable. I can't believe how stable this device is.
Sent from my HTC_PN071 using Tapatalk 4 Beta
It's not so much about this or that, but it's just that Samsung for whatever reason has not fully implemented Project Butter, the biggest feature for many for 4.1 The S3 didn't have as much bloatware as the S4, but when the One X and S3 got updated to JB, the difference was night and day on the One X, while it MOSTLY stayed the same on the S3.
true story, project butter fully implemented even on the One X JB
equally HTC is known to use higher speed internal storage mmc
and of course the whole Sense 5 light thing and being optimized specifically for the s600 (unlike the s4 exynos and s600 duality)
lets just say its a very clean job
regarding 4.2.2, it's even smoother after the OTA especially the app drawer
Dont know if anythings wrong or the reason that im using the power save mode all the time.......my phone lags a bit at times, any other conclusion anyone??

My last samsung was the sgs2, which could be perceived as laggy but in reality wasn't, some of the perceived lagginess was caused by design decisions (eg home botton lag, which was so multiclick combos can be done).
Try another (generic, not specically optimized launcher) launcher on a Galaxy phone and see it not lag at all....

Itd *could* be powersaver if your cpu limit is set. It will limit the cpu speed between 384-1134mhz when its on. 384-1727mhz when its off. Also, if you have alot of apps running in the background using *cpu* that *could* be it too....

The biggest reason i switched to CM was because back in the old days (when i had S2) CM was ALOT faster and smoother than TW, and i felt as TW ate up too much ram.
With TouchWiz (heavily debloated) i have the same amound of ram used as i have on CM. Around 1.1-1.3 gb. CM is a little bit smoother and faster, but not as much of a difference as it was back in the days. The camera in my experience, regardless of camera app, crap compared to TW. It's almost impossible for me (have a little bit of shaky hands) to take a sharp photo. That's the main reason i switched back to TW.
If i would rate camera quality on TW as 100%, i would give CM 60-70. And honestly, speed wise they are pretty much on pair, they both take me from A to B similarly speed wise, though CM spares you alot of unnecessary and annoying microlagsTW give you, but CM does sometimes display Micro lags aswell, but a little less than TW. But I feel like they both take me from A to B very similiarly.
thx
